You could hear a pin-drop, in the silence that left after Hannah's announcement. Booth saw that no one knew what to say and how to react and he understood in a second the smiles and best wishes were carefully constructed and not their genuine reactions. But Angela's white face, Cam's not so quiet gasp, Daisy's shocked face, Hodgins and Sweets's wince and a darted glance toward Bones: and Bones bright, brilliant fake smile as she wished them first. Fake smile? When did Bones learn to fake anything? Booth's heart plummeted and his throat closed up as he saw the team wishing them quickly and kind of gathering around Bones, to protect her. From Him! Why would she need protection from him? What did he do?
"You are still in love with Dr. Brennan!" Sweets told him that after he caught Booth looking at Bones.
"Be sure about your feelings because if you crack that shell, and you change your mind, she'll die of loneliness before she'll trust anyone ever again!" Cam's warning when she surmised that he has feelings for Bones.
But Bones herself told him to move on, 'No she didn't, you told her that you have to move on!' A voice that sounded like Cam's, whispered in his mind. But he loves Hannah. She is not a consolation prize, and he is happy that he is getting married to her.
"Congrats Seeley!" Booth came around from his wool gathering to see Cam standing in front of him, with a glass full of champagne in her hand, not smiling but looking at him with a sort of pity, and anger?
"Thanks Cam," He replied. Cam looked around and he followed her sight to see Hannah talking a mile-a- minute with a clearly uncomfortable Angela, who is still gripping Bones hand as if supporting her.
"Are you happy Seeley?" Cam asked
"Of course I am! I am getting married!" he says matter of factly.
"Hmm.."she stops as if debating to say what's on her mind or not, "just...you...you did exactly what I told you not to, you broke the shell and then you changed your mind Seeley!" She shook her head to cut off his answer and said, "Just be happy that's all we can ask. Don't worry, Dr. Brennan will be fine. We will take care of her. And listen Booth, assign some other agent for the time-being, I don't think you coming to the Jeffersonian after this, is a good thing right now! We will still go to the crime scene, solve the case and all, but I think it would be better if some other agent is assigned to consult with Jeffersonian. And if it's you who have to be in the case, I think we can limit it to strictly need to know basis, as in no interrogation from the Jeffersonian staff, no going to the suspect's house and all!"
"What?! Why? Bones is my partner!" Seeley protested.
"Yes, the partner with whom you are working for five years and still think she is a cold fish, someone who doesn't have feelings!" Cam retorted.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Booth asked. They were still conversing in low voices.
"Dr. Brennan heard you and Caroline talking about her, while we were dealing with the Logan Bartlett case. You were not supposed to know and anyways Booth, this is my last offer. Jeffersonian can work with the FBI on a need -to- know- basis if it's your case, fully if another agent is assigned or we go our separate ways. No more crime solving for us but we are fine with that!"
Booth was shocked. First he can't believe that Bones heard, he has felt enough guilt about talking about Bones behind her back with Caroline, and now to know she heard him. Wow! And he didn't have an inkling that Bones was hurt by what she heard. She has learned a lot in these seven months it seems. And now the Jeffersonian does not want to work with the FBI, no not FBI, Him, they do not want to work with him.
"Let me know what you decide, Agent Booth. Thank you." Cam nodded her head and said in a very formal way. She hasn't spoken to him that way ever.
"Cam are you done?" Booth looked aside to see Angela (still gripping Bones hand), Bones, Hodgins, Daisy, Sweets all standing there. Angela asked the question.
Bones was looking at him and smiled at him in a way he never saw her smile before. She looked like someone who had lost everything, she looked broken. Her smile didn't reach her eyes.
"Can you believe it Seeley? They want to leave now!" Booth looked up to see Hannah making her way towards him, came and hugged him.
For a moment he wanted to push Hannah away. He was shocked by the thought.
"We have to leave now, I am bloated and we are all very tired."Angela said.
"Also we have office very early tomorrow as we have to identify the Egyptian Remains" Cam added.
"Yes, we should go. Bye Hannah, bye Booth. Congratulations again!" Hodgins said and the team made their way out of the restaurant, not once looking back at Booth or Hannah. They were all still holding onto Bones in some way. Hannah sighed, kissed his cheek and moved to talk to some of her colleagues on the other side of the restaurant.
"I thought it was stupid bet, made out of drunken haze, I did not actually think you would do it!" He looked at the voice to see Sweets standing there, shaking his head in disbelief. He thought Sweets went with the team.
"Yes, well I have a right to be happy too!" Booth was sick and tired of everyone questioning his decision. It was his life, damn it!
"If that...Yes, of course!" Sweets said, "Anyway good night Agent Booth. If you ever need to talk about anything, you know where to find me! Bye." And with that Sweets left.
Booth was left standing in front of the bar, celebrating his engagement with people he doesn't know, and haven't met them before today. He was happy right? If they can't see that, maybe they were never truly his friend? But then, why does he feel like he has lost something? Lost everything!
