Humanity

It was 5 in the morning that Wednesday. Donatello, the resident genius, had been working diligently all through the night only to fall asleep at 4 for only an hour. The soft glow of the computer screen lit the teen up as his body took on a strange form. There was no flash of light or sparkle of magic that one would expect from such an unusual transformation.

Just a blink-and-you-miss-it shift. Green faded to pale peach, hair grew, shell sunk away leaving the lithe body of a sixteen-year-old boy who hadn't eaten or slept enough in the last week.

Donnie's eyes fluttered and slowly focused on the digital clock, he yawned and sat up.

"Ugh… maybe I should head to bed" He groaned as his back complained. He rubbed his face only to freeze.

Why could he feel a lump in the middle of his face? Why was there a tickle of hair on his fingertips?

He slowly moved his hands away only to stare at them.

Five slender fingers on pale hands began to shake.

"What the-…" He breathed as he turned his hands over in front of him. He leapt up from his seat and sprinted to Michelangelo's room, this was the only brother who had a full body mirror and still slept with a nightlight.

He made sure to keep as silent as possible as he stepped before the reflective surface.

He recognised himself. He was still skinny, relatively tall, brown eyed. Still had the same face shape.

Still Donnie.

His black hair was a curly mess on top of his head, he couldn't help but run his fingers through it again. Then he realised he was butt naked.

He hurried into his room where his disguise was. All four brothers needed a way to blend in with the humans, so they asked April to purchase them some baggy clothes.

He slipped on the pull over indigo hoodie and black sweats only to frown when the waist was far too wide to sit on his hips. He grabbed a safety pin and used that to tighten it.

It looked ridiculous but it was better than walking around completely naked.

He wandered back into his baby brother's room and stared at his reflection once again. He couldn't believe he was suddenly human.

Then a thought occurred to him.

Are the other three human too? Or just him?

What would happen if it were just him?

Would his brothers kick him out?

No… surely not.

He was so preoccupied with his thought he never noticed his little brother waking up.

He jumped as he heard a scream from behind.

"AHHH!" Mikey screeched as he leapt back in bed, "THERE'S A HUMAN IN THE LAIR!"

This was followed by the sound of his two other brothers falling out of bed.

"Mikey! Calm down!" Donnie hushed, "It's me! Donnie!"

He stared at his youngest brother. He was human too!

"D-Donnie?" Mikey gasped as he sat up onto his knees, Donnie was glad his little brother still had the covers wrapped around his waist. "Is that really you? How are you human dude?"

"I'm not the only one" Donnie cringed, "Look in the mirror bro… I'll give you a sec"

Without another word, Donnie left the room.

Only to turn to find Leonardo, also human, running towards him.

"Leo!" Donnie cringed as he raised a hand to save Leo some embarrassment. "It's me! Please go put some clothes on!"

Leo frowned at his little brother.

"Donnie? How are you-?" Leo looked down at himself before turning bright red and running back to his room.

Judging by the swearing coming from Raphael's room, Donnie guessed his brother had already found out the news.

Donatello gathered three more safety pins and sat down in the pit; he figured his brothers would also need help in keeping their pants up.

It took an hour for the first brother to appear.

Michelangelo ran straight up to Donnie, he looked to be both excited and slightly panicked.

"Here, let me" Donnie offered as he glanced at Michelangelo holding his pants up.

His little brother was also pale with black messy hair, which was longer than Donnie's, but still very much Mikey with his bright blue eyes and freckles dancing over his nose and cheeks. He was wearing his Orange pull over hoodie and black sweats.

"We're human! Raphie's freaking out and Leo's trying to get him to come out!" Mikey hugged himself. "This is so freaky!"

"Freaky's putting it mildly" Donnie chuckled nervously.

Leonardo was the next to join the brothers. He again had black hair, but it was a little straighter, shorter and tidier, same skin tone. He was slightly buffer than the two youngest but once again still looked like Leo with his dark sapphire eyes and serious expression.

"You guys ok?" he asked as Donnie handed him a safety pin for his pants. He was wearing the same as them but with a dark blue hoodie.

"Yeah just a little freaked out" Mikey shuddered. "How's Raphie?"

"He's coming now" Leo shrugged.

Raphael marched into the pit and snatched the safety pin from Donnie's hand.

"What did you do!?" He demanded.

He too had black hair, but he had clearly run his hands through it hundreds of times before he left his room, his furious green eyes were still the same, but he was miles buffer than all three other brothers.

"Nothing!" Donnie raised his hands in surrender. "I swear! I was a turtle then I fell asleep for an hour and woke up human!"

"An hour?" Leonardo frowned. "You only slept for an hour? How many times have I told you to go to bed early?"

"A bit of perspective Leo!" Donnie snapped back.

"Maybe the mutagen just… wore off…?" Mikey looked at each of his brothers.

"Then we'd be turtles, not human" Donnie shook his head, Raphael was losing his patience.

"Well I don't see you comin' up with any ideas!" he growled as he began to pace. "What the hell is going on? Who did this to us?"

"And why now?" Leo had never sounded so uncertain. "Donnie, we need answers"

"I-… I don't have any" Donnie shook his head hopelessly, "I never thought this was possible"

"Why are we acting like this is a bad thing?" Mikey frowned in confusion as he watched Raphael pace, "We're free! Aren't we?"

The brothers froze.

Free?

Could they really, truly be free to walk among the humans?

They would finally feel the warmth of the sun on their skin, the joy of a summer breeze through a bustling street.

They would finally be human.

"Is this temporary?" Leo wondered aloud, "We can't go up there until we know"

They all deflated a little at that, but they knew their eldest was right.

"I wish this could've happened sooner" Mikey bowed his head. "So, Father could've been human and got to walk around topside one last time"

The brothers nodded sadly.

"We shouldn't waste this opportunity" Donnie sighed, "For Sensei, he'd want us to make the most of it… I'll go do some tests right away, the quicker we know some answers the sooner we can head up there and start living"

"I'll help!" Mikey hurried after his brother into the lab.

Raphael looked over at his eldest and rolled his eyes at the worried expression.

"What're you worried about?" He asked angrily, "We're free"

"What am I worried about? What is there to NOT be worried about!?" Leo looked to Raph in shock. "There's so much to think about"

"Once we know if this is permanent there really isn't anything to be afraid of" Raph watched his brother carefully.

"Maybe not for you" Leo shook his head and began to pace, "I have to look after you guys! I'm only sixteen, how am I gonna get a job with no qualifications or any proof I existed before they met me? Who did this to us and why? What if someone's lying in wait? What if this is what breaks us apart? There's no reason to stay together now that we can hang out with other humans and don't need to hide!"

Raphael hid his smirk.

"Bro, we're family. That's the best reason to stay together there is- "

"Yeah cause every family stays together" Leo mocked sarcastically, Raph stared at him blankly. "Sorry"

"We will stay together, we've been through too much not to" Raph says seriously, "It's not like we have to worry about any of that right now, we'll do what we can and figure it out I guess… It'll be ok"

Leo glanced nervously at his brother.

They both jumped when the heard Mikey cry out, they looked over at the lab at the sound of their baby brother's sobs.

It was all the answer they needed.

This wasn't a permanent change.

They glanced at each other sadly before heading into the lab.

There Donatello was hugging Michelangelo tightly as the boy cried, Donnie had tears of his own running down his cheeks but was clearly holding it together for his sake.

"Not permanent then" Leo sighed as he hugged the two, Raphael soon joined.

"No" Donnie croaked as he gently patted Mikey's head. "Last night when the foot chased us through that steam? It was a trap. The steam was supposed to turn us human there and then, so we'd be vulnerable"

There was a moment of silence.

"Good job it didn't work" Raphael smirked weakly. "Otherwise Shredder would've seen our dicks"

That's all it took for the four brothers to dissolve into hysterical laughter, the tears dried up and disappointment faded away at the funny image.

They talked about what they would've done if it were permanent and by 10 in the morning the four were turtles once again.

But for five hours they had been human, they had been like everyone else.

That was all they needed.
