Summer and Michonne POV:
Summer closed the door of the shed and slid down the opposite wall from the door and put her head in her hands and started to cry. She let out everything she had been feeling for the past week and half, everything she had done for the past week and half. Once the tears started coming, she couldn't stop them. She knew there was things that she needed to do, things that would kept her mind occupied, kept her busy, but it was like her body wouldn't cooperate. Summer looked at the door as the door know slowly turned and stood up. "Whose there?" she called out as she held up her knife.
Michonne lowered her sword as she entered the building. "Just me. Heard some noise, thought I'd check it out," she said as she closed the door.
"It was just me. I'd like to be alone," Summer told her.
Michonne gave a small smile as she slid down to sit against the door. "Sorry, we both know that's not gonna happen," she said as she opened up a bag and held up a chocolate bar. "But what I can do is listen and share chocolate. Just don't tell Carl, he might get jealous," she said with a smile.
Summer took the chocolate bar and split it in two and handed her half and sat across from the other woman. "It's not going to work you know?" Summer asked.
Michonne raised an eyebrow as she bit down on the chocolate bar. "Don't know what you mean. I just heard something, came to make sure there wasn't a walker in here, saw it was you, sharing my candy bar with you," she answered with a shrug.
Summer glanced at her. "You aren't going to ask what I was crying about?"
"Was that what that noise was?" Michonne asked.
Summer looked at her. "Dad or mom send you?" she asked.
Michonne shook her head. "No," she answered. "You were with Joey this whole time?"
"We got out together, met up with Ty, Judith, Lizzie and Molly. Met up with Carol," Summer answered.
Michonne smirked as she took a bite of the candy bar. "You got shot?"
"One of the Governor's men," Summer answered. "You're trying to get me to tell you what happened. Sneaky of you, but it's not something I want mom or dad to know."
"I'm friends with your parents, but I'm also your friend," Michonne said as she switched sides so she could sit right next to Summer. "Holding things in, keeping them to yourself, letting it eat it up inside you, it'll destroy you."
Summer looked at her knees. "I'm already destroyed, I'm not who I was."
Michonne patted her hand. "None of us are who we were, but that doesn't mean you're destroyed. It means you've had to do things to protect yourself, protect your family. I'm not going to tell anyone, Summer."
"What if after I tell you, you think I'm a monster?" Summer asked as the tears fell again.
Michonne hugged her and let the younger girl lean her head on her shoulder. "Summer, you are not a monster. You are a strong young woman. You have a big loving heart, especially for those who you care about. I will always see you as someone I would die for, nothing is ever going to change that. What happened?" she asked softly.
Summer picked up her head and wiped her eyes. "Lizzie…she was the one feeding the walkers' at the prison. She thought they were the same, that we didn't understand them. She thought she could hear them. She seemed excited by the thought of me dying and becoming one of those things. We tried to talk with her, tried to make her understand. Joey, Ty and Carol went out, hoping to find a deer or something, Joey and I were going to leave that day, head to Terminus. I laid down with Judy, I didn't mean to fall asleep," she explained as she wiped the tears from her eyes. "I woke up and Judy wasn't with me. I knew something happened. I went outside, on the porch, and Lizzie…she had a knife in her hand…she had killed Molly. She was seconds away from killing Judy….to see them turn," she explained as she sat up.
"Take your time," Michonne told her as she rubbed her back supportively.
"I couldn't take my eyes off Lizzie. I had to get to Judy, I had to keep Lizzie from killing her. I don't even know how I got off the porch to her, but I was trying to convince her that Judy wasn't even old enough to turn into a walker. I took my eyes off her, for one second, to get to Judy, and the next thing I knew she was coming at me with the knife. I killed her….she was a child and I killed her," Summer told her as she continued to cry.
Michonne hugged her and rubbed her back. "You saved Judy, you saved yourself. You crying like this, that means you aren't a monster. You didn't tell Mika?"
"I just told her that Lizzie didn't make it, and it's true. But I couldn't tell her how. Carol, Ty, Joey and I agreed, no one needed to know what Lizzie did, how she was," Summer said.
Michonne nodded. "I get it," she assured her. "The beanie's new."
Summer looked at her. "Got it off one of the Terminus people, Sloan. Joey and I heard her on the walkie talkie, talking about how Jes, Mika and the baby got away, heard mom's name. We had to find out who else they had. She knew she was going to die, she knew she wasn't going to walk out of that room, I could see it in her eyes. But she still begged, she still thought I wouldn't do it. I told her that if she told us what we needed to know, then I would shoot her in the head, that I wouldn't let her turn. She did tell us, and I did keep my promise. But, unlike Lizzie, I don't feel anything, not guilt, not regret, not remorse, nothing. If we let her walk away, then she'd come back, with more people. Joey said Ty hesitated in killing the man that he was guarding. I didn't hesitate. There was only one outcome, one choice to make sure that my family was safe from her, and that was to kill her. Shouldn't I feel something? What if this means that I'm no better then the Governor, then the Terminus people?" she asked softly.
Michonne tilted her chin up so she could look at her in the eyes. "Summer Grace Dixon, you don't have to ever worry about becoming that type of person. You would kill yourself before you became like them. You know how I know that?" she asked.
"How?" Summer asked.
Michonne gave a small smile. "What you just said, that you knew that the only way to keep us safe from her was to kill her. You were looking out for all of us. It's the reason I went after the Governor for so long. I knew he'd be back, that he would never let it go. I feel like it was my fault that he destroyed what we had," she responded.
"It wasn't your fault, Michonne. You tried," Summer said as she squeezed her hand.
"Not hard enough. I'm sure Jes is feeling the same way. We've learned the hard way that if those who are a threat to us are left alive, they are going to come back stronger then before. You did the right thing," Michonne assured her.
"So you think we should have made sure everyone was dead from Terminus?" Summer asked.
"I do," Michonne answered honestly. "But, getting away from there was the smartest thing we could do, the safest thing we could do. We aren't at full strength, your mom just had a baby, she needs to rest, to get strong. We took a lot of them down, made them scatter. From what Jes said, they aren't like us, they aren't like a family. We'll get them," Michonne assured her.
Summer nodded. "We will," she repeated strongly.
Carl and Jewel's POV:
Carl switched Judith to his hip and gently pushed the bedroom door open and walked into the bedroom. "We have to be quiet Judy, mom needs her rest," he told the little girl in his arms.
Judith squealed in response.
Jewel gave a small laugh as she sat up. "Well, that tells you what she thinks of your advice. Come on, give her here," she said as she saw the hesitation. "My fever's down, you can feel my forehead," she assured him.
Carl did so as he handed Judy to her. "Sorry," he said.
"Don't ever be sorry for protecting your sisters'," Jewel told him as she took Judith. "Come on, give me a hug," she told Carl. "Unless you're to big to do such a thing."
Carl shook his head and hugged her. "I wanted to be there, you know? When you had Hope?"
"I know," Jewel assured him. "You don't have to call me mom, you know? Not that I don't love it, but I don't want you to think that I am ever replacing Lori. She was your mom, and Judith's," she said as she kissed his cheek.
"I want too, I mean it may not be all the time," Carl answered. "It's going to be hard out there with Judith and Hope."
"Yes it is," Jewel answered. "But we don't have much choice until we find another place. It's not the best situation, but we'll manage, and we'll keep them safe," she told him. "Your dad kinda told me about what almost happened. Do you want to talk about it?" she asked softly as Judy stuck her fingers in Jewel's mouth. "Oh yum, but you need those!" she told her as she tickled her.
"I can still feel his hands…but he didn't do anything," Carl answered softly.
Jewel squeezed his hand. "It was bad enough that he tried. I'm sorry that you had to go through that, sweetheart," she told him. "But, it isn't your fault."
"Mar was so calm…she kept talking to me, I was still scared, but I focused on her voice," Carl told her.
Jewel kissed the top of Judith's head. "We both know what it's like, to be scared like that, feel all alone. We wouldn't want anyone to go through that alone," she said. "Your dad told me what he did. You OK with it?"
"He saved me, and Mar. It was enough to catch them off guard," Carl answered.
Jewel touched his face. "Carl that isn't what I asked. I asked if you were OK with it. A parent's job is to do anything to protect there children. It's supposed to be anyway, I got the short end of the stick with the parent draw. Your dad did the ONLY thing he could do in that second, to save you. It was instinct. Your dad isn't a bad person, because of what he did. What he did was because you are part of his heart, part of him. If I had been in the same situation, I would have done worse," she told him. "I killed a woman at Terminus, Claire. She wasn't working with a whole tool box. I woke up after having Hope and she had her in her arms. I wanted to kill her, right there, right at that moment. But I knew I had to wait, I knew you all were going to make your way to us. But, when we were taken out of the train car, and she was taunting me about how she was going to raise Hope as her own…I snapped. Your dad's voice brought me back. I know how your dad felt in that moment that he bit that man's neck. So don't be so hard on him alright?"
Carl nodded. "I'm glad we found you."
"Yeah, me too," Jewel said as she hugged him. "Me too."
