This Night
Chapter 218
Author's Note: So I took down my thank you note. I didn't want to sound all hissy about criticism from guest. Two rear end accidents in four days, a sick kid, and lack of sleep, it makes me hissy. So, I'm sorry guest. Thank you all for reviews. I'm still not sure about Grady, as in if I'm showing Beth and Noah before he escapes, only because it would be the same thing. I'm kind of excited about what I have planned, even though it's sad, but it will be great character development. Dang there that word is again. Please review. It makes me happy.
Rick's Group POV:
Rick and the group walked into the food bank and Rick walked over to a hole in the floor and bent down. He motioned the group over.
"Go on," Jes told Gabriel as she motioned him to go in front of him. "Damn, that smells," she commented as she pulled a rag out of her picket and put it over her nose.
"If a sewer could puke, this is what it would smell like," Bob said as he wrinkled his nose.
Michonne looked up to the ceiling and nodded to the holes. "Water's been coming down that hole for a while, slimed this place up good," she told the group.
"We can use the shelves' to block them," Sasha told them.
"Yeah, that's it Sasha, that's our way, down those shelves'," Rick told them as the group looked down at the waterlogged walkers'.
The group started jumping into the hole as Jes looked at Gabriel. "You waiting for an engraved invitation?" she asked.
Rick turned around and looked at Gabriel. "Hey, I said that you're coming with us."
Jes shook her head as Gabriel looked nervous, obviously hesitating. "You first, Father," she told him as she nudged him with her gun. She rolled her eyes as she nudged him again. "I will push you," she told him. She jumped down after him letting Rick come down last.
"Go, go, here they come! You take right," Rick yelled out instructions as the group started to move the shelves. "I see three here," he said.
"We've got another one to the left," Jes told them as she moved to stab it, rejoining the others as they stabbed the others. Jes looked over her shoulder as she heard splashing to see Gabriel retreating. "Rick," she said as she called to get his attention and nodded toward Gabriel.
Rick stabbed a walker through the shelves' then looked at Gabriel. "We have to get Gabriel," Rick told them.
"What happened?" Bob yelled.
"He's a coward, that's what happened," Jes answered as she shook her head.
Rick sighed. "Alright, we push down the shelves on the ones in front of us. We'll fight through, and I'll grab him," he told the group. They all nodded as they pushed down the shelves. "Go!" he told them.
Jes took up the rear and stabbed a walker, and looked over as Michonne was struggling with one of the walkers. She started over to help her when she saw the other woman grab a part of a mixer and stick it in the walkers' brain. "Nice," she complemented the other woman as she turned to see Rick pull the walker near Gabriel and pushed her against a wall. She watched as Gabriel sunk back against the wall.
Bob walked toward a container. "I know what it's going to break," he said as walked over to a green container, where he suddenly went under the water.
"Make your way over to him!" Jes ordered.
"Bob!" Sasha yelled.
They watched as Bob came up from under the water and struggle with a walker as he finally was able to get it off him and Sasha hit it several times with the green container.
"Bob are you ok?" Sasha asked as she grabbed him.
"I'm fine now," Bob answered.
Jes let out the breath she was holding. "Let's load up and get back."
Rick nodded as he looked at Gabriel. "You think you can handle a simple task? Jes take him upstairs, look for any clothes, any baby items."
Jes nodded. "We'll meet you up there. Come on," she told Gabriel. She glanced over at Bob. "You scared us for a minute there," she said as she squeezed his shoulder. She pulled herself up after Gabriel and grabbed a bag throwing it at him. "Children things, baby things. That's the top priority," she told him.
Gabriel nodded and went to do it. "You handled yourself well down there."
Jes turned her head slightly as she was looking at the wracks of clothes. "I wasn't hiding out at a church for almost two years depending on God sending me help," she told him as she turned back to the rack. "Don't dare even say sorry, not to me, maybe you can try to say it to Rick and the others. But saying sorry when you aren't going to change is pointless. You are a coward, plain and simple. If I had been alone out there, when you were calling for help, I would have left you. If it had been my decision down there, I would have left you. You're going to get someone killed because you are a frightened worthless piece of shit. For your sake, you better hope there's someone around to save you other then me," she told him.
"You wouldn't leave, you aren't that type of person," Gabriel answered nervously.
Jes stepped up to him and looked at him. "I put a bullet in a man's head, a man that I served with, a man that I slept with because he would rather be a coward and play it safe in a bad place then do the right thing. He wasn't bit, he wasn't going to die. But, I knew he wouldn't go along with saving a life because that would mean he'd lose the safety of what we had. So, I shot him. I said sorry, because I wish I had a choice. So, when you say I'm not that type of person, you're deadly wrong. I am the type of person that needs to do what needs to be done at that time," she told him. "Sometimes for that person, it works out well, other times, not so much," she told him as she backed away.
"Everything alright?" Michonne asked as she came up.
"Everything's fine," Jes answered as she eyed him. "I'll come outside to help in a minute," she said as she looked at Gabriel. She went through some clothes and put it in bags and came outside. "We'll be eating good tonight," she said as she helped load the push carts.
Rick nodded as he glanced over to Gabriel. "Michonne said she walked into some tense situation in there. You alright?"
"I would have left him down there, I wouldn't have risked my life for him. I would have much rather explain to everyone why he didn't come back, then why you didn't. If that makes me a bad person, then so be it. If you want me to leave, I will," Jes told him.
"Hey, no one wants you to leave, no one is letting you leave. You're part of this family, you can't leave now," Rick told her with a smirk. "Plus, you'd probably try to sneak off with Hope, and we can't have that can we?"
Jes shook her head. "No, we can't have that," she said.
"Let's go," Rick told the group as he started pushing the cart. "Jes, give Gabriel a backpack, let him be useful."
Jes handed it to him as she walked with the group.
Gabriel looked at Rick. "I'm sorry, I panicked. I told you…"
Rick looked at him. "You knew her when she was alive," he stated to Gabriel, referring to the Walker that had came after him. After a few minutes of silence, he looked at Gabriel. "Yeah, I get it, you only tell your sins to God," he said as he walked ahead.
Gabriel looked back as Michonne was pushing the second cart and passed by him.
"Gabriel and I'll push that one, Michonne, you go help Rick. We're coming up on hills, plus Gabriel and I are becoming such good friends," Jes told her as she glanced back at Sasha and Bob.
Michonne nodded as she went to help Rick.
"Do you miss the sword?" Rick asked Michonne.
"Wasn't really mine to begin with, found it at the beginning," Michonne answered.
"How did you get so good?" Rick asked.
"It was just me and them out here all day, everyday for a good long time. I don't know what that was, but it wasn't life," Michonne said with a grin. "Not like today, stumbling around in three feet of slime for peas and carrots, that's living," she told him.
Rick had to laugh and shook his head.
"I miss Andrea. I miss Hershel. I don't miss what was before, I don't miss that sword," Michonne told him as they walked to the church.
Summer looked up from the porch of the church where she was walking back and forth with Hope. "Look they're back, sweet pea," she told Hope.
Rick looked at her as he walked up the steps. "Your mom OK?" he asked as he kissed the top of Hope's head then hers.
Summer nodded. "Yeah, she was finally able to fall asleep, and Miss. Hope here is already spoiled with being rocked, so I didn't want her to wake mom up. Mika and I've been taking turns," she told him. "You stink. I mean more then usual."
Michonne arched an eyebrow. "Now, you need to be nice to the people who come bearing food, otherwise you may just be eating pecans."
"You look like you hit a jackpot," Summer said as Rick took Hope out of her hands.
"I'm going to go check on your mom, help get this food inside," Rick told her as he went inside. "We brought things back, need some help bringing it in. Where's Carl?" he asked.
Tyreese looked up from entertaining Judith. "He's out back," he said as he handed Judith to Lexi. "Jewel's laying down in the Father's office. Hope you don't mind," Ty said as Gabriel walked in.
"No, of course not," Gabriel answered.
"I'm going to go check on Jewel," he said as he handed Hope to Mika.
"Carl and I found something, out back. He wants to show it to you," Lexi told him as she cast a sideways glance to Gabriel.
Rick nodded. "I'll be along in a minute," he told her as he went into the office.
Jewel and Rick's POV:
Rick bent down and kissed Jewel as she was sleeping. "Hey Mrs. Grimes, we've got food," he told her.
Jewel wrinkled her nose. "You are so lucky that I am not pregnant anymore, I'd be throwing up on you. What did you fall in Mr. Grimes?" she asked as she sat up.
Rick smirked. "Hope didn't seem to mind the smell. The food was in about a three feet of slime. Plus, I fell as I was trying to help Gabriel," he answered as he touched her face.
"Hope doesn't know any better," Jewel said with a smile. "Something happen out there with Gabriel?" she asked.
"He got scared, had to save him. Everybody else get back alright?" Rick asked.
Jewel nodded. "No injuries. Summer, David, Mar and Joey found some clothes, maybe you can see if anything fits you," she told him as she kissed him. "Ronnie popped two big blisters on Mitch's foot, she's making him prop it up. Summer found one house that had a few kids, she was able to find shoes to fit Mitch and Mika. Mar found some clothes for me as well, some that'll fit Rosita, Tara and Maggie," she said. "Axel is out back helping with the bus. Something happened with Ronnie while you were gone."
Rick looked at her. "What?" he asked as he kissed her again.
"Abraham was going on about Washington, pushing Ronnie about it. She went off on him, mentioned that what she really wanted to do was go back to the prison and be with Ridge. She couldn't tell me if she meant it or not, and I told her it was alright. I can't imagine what I'd do if something happened to you, and I haven't spent more then half of my life with you. Plus if I had to put down Summer, Carl, Hope or Judith? I think the only one that knows how that feels like is Carol, and I'm not sure if she'd be the right person to talk to her about it. Mar, maybe, but she didn't have to put her son down. I know our instinct is to try to stop her from opting out, if that's her decision, but I don't think we should, if that's what she decides," Jewel told her husband.
"We need her, she's part of this family, she's the only doctor we have," Rick told her.
Jewel nodded. "Remember how miserable Andrea was after Dale saved her? Yes she eventually accepted it, but that anger. I told her how important she was to us, to me. I mean, look at everything that's happened in such a short time, this was the first time she had a moment to stop and actually grieve. The overgrown radish just pushed to hard," she said as she kissed Rick's shoulder. "We just need to be there for everyone. Things happened out there, with Carol, Ty, Summer and Joey that they aren't telling us. Things that they aren't ready to tell us yet. You and I did things to protect our children that we never expected to be capable of doing. It's going to hit us all, differently, and we need to be able to be there for each other," she said softly. "I love you."
"I love you too," Rick told her as he kissed her again. "We need to get out there," he told her as he kissed her.
