This Night
Chapter 224
Author's Note: I have a long weekend this weekend and plan on working on the episode of Slabtown. But every person I look for as an OC who isn't sticking around, just doesn't want to be a red shirt. So I'm still looking. I don't need anymore OC's that stick around until Alexandria. Please review.
Jewel and Gabriel POV:
Jewel stood at the cross that Summer had helped her make, right next to the one that Sasha had put up for Bob.
"I am sorry…" Gabriel started to say.
Jewel continued looking at the cross. "You broke one of your commandments, Father," she informed him, not being able to keep the sarcasm out of her voice.
Gabriel looked at her. "I didn't lie. I never lie," he told her.
Jewel turned and looked at him. "Rick asked you how many people have you killed, you answered none."
"I…I haven't…I've never…" Gabriel stumbled.
Jewel put up her hand. "Shut up! You were responsible for your congregation's safety and well being. They came here looking for sanctuary, they were under the impression that a man of the cloth who claimed to deliver the word of God, would be able to provide safety in a time of need. They expected you to offer some kind words so maybe they wouldn't be so scared. But they didn't get that did they?" she asked.
Gabriel dropped his head. "I will leave you to your grief," he said as he turned around to leave.
Jewel stepped in front of me. "We're not done."
"I…don't have to explain my actions to you. I answer to God…" Gabriel told her.
Jewel gave a small smirk as she grabbed his arm. "No, your right, you don't have to explain. But you do have to listen. You believe God sent us to rescue you, I believe God sent us, sent me, to make you face the truth. You killed those men, women, children, babies, expectant mothers', new couples just starting out in life, old couples that spent there lives together. You may not have taken a gun or a knife to them, but because you were a coward, you killed them. You'll never know if you could have saved a few by just unlocking the door and letting a few of them in before the Walkers' came. Instead, you sat behind a door, and listened to there screams. You listened to them being murdered. You are just as responsible as if you lifted a gun and shot everyone of them. How many people are buried here because you were a coward? How many Gabriel? How many didn't your bury because they were walkers? Answer me!" she yelled as she took a step closer. "Last night, you would have opened the door to them, you would have been a coward again, wouldn't you? You would have tried to save your life by sacrificing my family, my children," Jewel told him. "How many people have you killed?" she asked again.
Summer, Michonne, Mar, Maggie and Ronnie's POV:
Maggie put her gun over her shoulder and watched the scene unfolding. "Shouldn't we try to stop her?"
Mar shook her head. "You know Jewel, someone put her children in danger, she's going to let them know about it."
"Plus, no matter what we've all been through, she did just have a baby. That ups the hormone's level's in normal circumstances," Ronnie reminded them as she waived her hand. "And this is nothing but normal."
"So, we are just going to let her beat up a priest?" Maggie asked.
"I'm missing mom beating up the coward? Where?" Summer asked as she came out on the porch.
"No one's beating anybody up, your mom is just letting off some steam," Michonne assured her.
"None of us were in that room last night, we don't know what happened in there," Ronnie reminded them. "We all heard what he did, what he let happen to his flock, how he stayed alive when they died. I know that it doesn't sit well with me, at all. I can only imagine how it sits with Jewel," she told them.
"Carl said that she put a knife to his head. That when Gareth said he'd let him and Judith left, mom didn't even give him a chance to make a sound," Summer informed them.
"I was with her at the prison, when the outbreak happened. She was worried about everyone, but the children, Carl, Summer, she was panicked about them," Michonne answered. "Now, being out here, with Judith and a newborn, her momma bear instincts must be going into overdrive."
"There's nothing we can do to make those instincts stop. Most mothers' are fierce, but Jewel…." Ronnie said.
"She's always been like that," Summer said.
"Physical isn't the only thing we have to worry about with Jewel, I mean, the mental too," Mar said as she looked at Ronnie.
"Post Partum. I thought of that too," Ronnie answered. "Do you know if your mother suffered from it after you Summer?"
Summer shrugged. "If she did, she didn't say anything to me about it. But she wouldn't."
"She is an alcoholic," Maggie told them. "At the farm, she went after daddy with Rick when he fell off the wagon. She said she had been sober for about 12 or 13 years at the time."
Summer nodded. "She stopped when I was three."
"But she was dealing with other issues. Issues that no one knew but Daryl," Mar pointed out.
"You didn't ask her about post partum back at the prison?" Michonne asked Ronnie.
"It was on my after birth check list. I was more focused on getting her through the birth. I even had a rotation schedule for her to have someone with her that was going to start…right when the flue happened," Ronnie answered.
"Then the prison fell and we've been trying not to get eaten by a bunch of cannibals," Mar added.
"Then she started running the fever, and I was more focused on keeping her alive, getting her fever down," Ronnie told them.
"Which thankfully you did," Maggie told her.
Michonne turned her head to the argument. "She's getting louder, we should break it up. I mean we wouldn't want her to attract walkers' with all that yelling."
"I'll get dad," Summer told them as she went into the church.
Group POV:
"How many people have you killed?" Jewel asked as she stepped closer to Gabriel.
Michonne walked up first and put herself in between Gabriel and Jewel. "Jewel, hey you don't want to do this."
Jewel looked at her. "Yeah, I think I do."
Ronnie took her arm. "You're emotions are all over the place. He's not worth losing your anger. None of us are happy with what he did," she told her as she stood in front of her. "He's not going to do anything to any of us, he's not going to put the children in danger. He's not. None of us will let him. I won't let him. Rick won't let him. Michonne has her sword back. Summer and Carl, do you think they'd let him put them in danger?"
Jewel shook her head. "No," she answered. "I just wanted to know how many people he was responsible for killing."
Mar rubbed her back. "Hey, what he did, what he let happen it was wrong. He knows it, deep down he does."
"He lied, he lied about how many people he killed. We ask those questions for a reason, and he lied," Jewel told them as she started to cry.
"That just means that we keep an extra eye on him," Michonne told her. "We will."
Rick came up and turned to Gabriel. "What did you do?"
"Rick, Jewel needs you. We'll figure it out," Mar told him.
Glenn came up and stopped as he saw Jewel crying. "Everything alright?" he asked.
"It will be," Michonne answered.
"Abraham is chomping at the bit to leave," Glenn told them as he looked at Maggie.
"You aren't going to let us leave without saying goodbye to us, are you? I mean I did share my condoms with you back at the farm," Maggie teased.
Jewel wiped her eyes. "No I wouldn't let you leave without saying goodbye," she said.
Rick put his arm around her and walked with her as the rest of the group followed.
"Thank you," Gabriel called after Ronnie.
Ronnie turned and looked at him. "I didn't do it for you, I did it for her. We didn't want the noise to attract walkers," she told him as she walked away.
Abe's group POV:
Abe finished loading up the bus and looked as Maggie came with Glenn. "I said we were leaving at noon, we're cutting it close."
"It's not noon yet, so we have time," Jes told him.
Abe walked up to Rick and handed him a map. "This is our route to DC. We'll stick to it as long as we're able. If not, well, you got our destination. Once Eugene gets to the big brains left up there, things are gonna bounce back. This group should be there for it, you should be there for it," he told Rick.
"They will be," Maggie said.
"We will be," Michonne added.
Summer rocked Hope as she stood next to Carl who was holding Judith. "We want these two to grow up in a safe world, we'll do everything we can to help."
Rick looked at the group and nodded. "We will," he assured them.
Jes rubbed Hope's head then Judith. "You two keep everyone out of trouble, you hear me? You let them know when they are doing something stupid, alright Hell Raiser? You channel you're Uncle Merle."
"Oh, please no, don't wish that on any of us," Jewel told her as she hugged her. "Thank you, for everything. You're family, don't ever forget it," she said as she kissed her cheek.
Jes nodded. "I know."
Axel came out on the porch with David and a bag. "Hope you don't mind if I tag along."
"Are you sure?" Rick asked.
"I spent a lot of time in prison, just trying to stay out of trouble, depending on others to help me, to save me. Then when the prison fell, I depended on Daryl and Beth. Now it's my turn to help save others. I want to make a difference," Axel explained.
Abraham nodded. "Let's go," he told the group.
Mar opened up the church door. "Come on guys, they're leaving, time to say goodbye," she told the rest of the group as they came out on the porch.
Joey shook David's hand. "I can't believe you're going after just finding each other."
David looked at him then Summer and the rest of the group. "You got a good thing going here. I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet, but I need to be. This will be good for me," he said as he got on the bus.
Everyone watched as the group on the bus piled in and Rick nodded at them. Abraham closed the door and drove off.
Rick and Jewel's POV:
Jewel took Hope from Summer. "I'm going to stay out here with your dad for a bit. I don't want to go inside just yet. Don't want to be around Gabriel just yet."
Summer nodded as she kissed her cheek. "We'll be OK mom," she told her as she went inside.
"Let's go see what daddy's up to over there," Jewel told Hope as she kissed the top of her head. "That's the map to DC," she said as she touched Rick's face and kissed him.
"Left me a message," Rick answered with a smirk as he showed her. "Sorry I was an asshole. Come to Washington. The new world needs Rick Grimes."
Jewel smiled. "I agree, it will."
"I think it needs Jewel Grimes too," Rick told her as he kissed her then kissed Hope's head. "What happened with Gabriel?"
Jewel sighed. "He tried to say express his condolences for Merle's death, and I told him he lied to us when you asked how many people he had killed. Then I demanded to know how many people had died because he wouldn't open that door. I might have been thinking about decking him before Michonne and the others stopped me."
Rick laughed. "He would have deserved it," he assured her as he kissed her. "You feeling alright? Are you alright with what happened last night?"
"It was either them or us. One of them had already killed Merle, and Bob….poor Bob. The only reason I stopped you from doing anymore damage last night was to keep you from going over the edge. I would have loved to have taken a swipe at him myself. But, Mitch, Lexi, Mika, they didn't need to see that. You did what needed to be done," Jewel assured him as she kissed him again.
"How are you feeling?" Rick asked again.
"Getting stronger," Jewel told him. "I may hit Daryl when he comes back, but he's a Dixon, he can handle it."
"I can tell him, about Merle, about what happened," Rick assured her as he squeezed her arm in support.
Jewel shook her head. "I have to do it. I need to do it. Not for him, but for me. It's got to be me. He died protecting me, and I need to respect him by telling Daryl," she told him. "I appreciate it," she told him.
"Always," Rick told her as he kissed her again.
Jewel glanced back. "Ty is burying the bodies of the Terminus people."
"He should just burn them," Rick answered.
"This is way of dealing with what happened last night. We all process things different. This world….it makes us process things differently, makes us think differently," Jewel reminded him.
Rick nodded. "I'll go help. You gonna be alright in the church with Gabriel?" he asked.
"Yeah," Jewel answered. "It's almost time for this one to be nursed," she said as she looked at Hope.
Rick kissed the top of Hope's head. "Keep mommy out of trouble til I get back alright?" he asked as he went to help Tyreese and Jewel walked back into the church.
