Meanwhile, Sota is walking around the path that leads to the city of Heartland City. He went and it looks deserted and not lively like the original Heartland City.
"Black Mist! Yuma! Astral! Are you here?" Sota is yelling to make sure that his friends are here, but there is no one around the empty city.
"I hope they are alright." Sota said. Then there is a shadow that is lurking. Sota thought he heard something and looked around. Sota sense now that he is not alone.
He kept walking until he saw the spirit world's Heartland Amusement Park. Sota decide to go there. The shadow is watching Sota in his every step that he takes and follows him.
Sota went inside the tall building where Kaito and his family live. He is walking the hallways.
"Where am I now?" Sota wonders. Sota keep walking until he saw a lone door. Sota walked to the doorknob and then he felt his heart pounding with uneasiness.
He opened it and saw only darkness in this room. Where am I?" Sota wondered. He then saw a familiar black figure. "Black Mist?" Sota said. He is about to run up to him until he saw Yuma in his tentacles.
"Let go of me." Yuma said.
"No, there is no way. I am letting you go." Black Mist said. Sota looks in horror as Yuma is in the clutches of Black Mist. Sota can't take it.
"Black Mist, stop! Don't do this!" Sota yelled hoping that he would stop. He then saw Yuma reaching for his deck and throw a card. The one who caught it is Tetsuo.
"What? Tetsuo? Kotori?" Sota is confused. Kotori and Tetsuo didn't sign up for the spirit training. Sota went to Tetsuo to talk to him.
"Tetsuo, what is going on?" Sota ask. But Tetsuo didn't say anything. Tetsuo then use his duel disk to battle as well as Yuma with Black Mist on his side.
"Tetsuo, are you listening?" Sota reach his hand to Tetsuo and his hand went through Tetsuo. Sota gasped of shock. "What?"
Sota is confused until he remembered Roku's words. 'Beware young ones. When being there you will encounter can also see the memories of your friends and enemies. Also you will see evil dead spirits.'
So what he is seeing is Black Mist's memories. Sota is horrify that his partner did those terrible deeds to get Astral's body and took over the powers of the Numbers.
Sota bit his lip when he saw those horrible deeds. He continues to see the schemes to get Astral's body. He saw Astral dueling him as Black Mist teamed up with Vector and the final battle he had with Yuma and Astral two years ago.
"Oooohh, a lost boy." A voice is heard after the memories of Black Mist have faded away. He looked around and turns around. He saw a man with a hat and has an insect outfit.
"Are you one of Yuma's friends?" the man said.
"Hey, are you lost too, old man? Sota ask.
The man had a bitter look on his face. "I am not an old man. You are just like him. He said the same thing to me." The man said. The man's face turn into an evil look. "The name is Mr. Heartland."
Sota thought he heard that name somewhere before. "I am the symbol of Heartland City. "Oh, you are that man that say 'Heart Burning." Sota remembers him. "You are creepy old man for a symbol of the city." Sota added.
"You little!" Mr. Heartland is displeased on his comment. "You must come with me, you little brat." Mr. Heartland is surrounded by a dark aura and turn into a fly form (Barian's form).
Mr. Heartland went closer to him. Sota keep stepping back.
"DARK MAGIC ATTACK!" A girl's voice is heard and a pink blast hit Mr. Heartland and he disappeared in a puff of smoke.
Sota looked and saw a magician with a wand, blond hair and a blue and pink outfit.
"Dark Magician Girl!" Sota said in surprise. He remembers her as one of the legendary Duel monsters.
"Dark Magician Girl, why are you here?" Sota ask.
"I am here to help you find your way back to your friends. My other friend will guide them. Till then let's get you out of here." Dark Magician Girl said. She waves her wand as the dark room vanished and went back at the hallway in the Heartland Tower.
"Let's keep going." Dark Magician Girl said. Sota agreed and they continue their journey to find Black Mist and the others.
Meanwhile, Black Mist, Yuma, Astral and the others are at the cities looking for Sota. Yuma and the gang are now at the city square where Yuma met Astral and battle Astral.
"I sense Sota is here but it is hard to trace him in the spirit world." Astral said. Black mist took a deep breath so he doesn't lose his nerve. "This is bad." Black Mist said.
Yuma pat him in the back. "Don't worry Black Mist. We will find him." Yuma said.
"What if he gets killed and I go along with him." Black Mist said. Black Mist is telling him, he want Sota on his sight so he won't get killed but Yuma knows he is worried about Sota's safety.
Yuma then sense something and saw three beings coming this way. He saw them clearly and saw that they are the former Fearsome Four that battled Yuma and his friends when Astral is gone and healed in the Astral World.
"Yuma...We are here for our revenge." The Cicada Barian said. Yuma's face turns serious when he recognizes them.
"It is a shame that you are not alone like your other friend." The Jellyfish Barian said. The gang gasped when he say like the other friend.
"Sota? Where is Sota?" Yuma ask.
"Mr. Heartland is going to kill that kid." The Mosquito Barian said. Yuma's eyes turn big as Black Mist click his tongue. "That stupid 'Heart Burning' freak." Black Mist said.
"Now, it is time for you and your friends join him in the other world." They said.
"Black Magic!" A voice is heard as it hit the Barians and hit them and they burst into flames. They scream in pain, as there is nothing left.
Yuma looked up and saw Dark Magician.
"Are you alright?" Dark Magician said. Yuma nodded speechless since he saw one of the legendary Duel monsters.
"You are looking for Sota?" Dark Magician said. "Yes, do you know where he is?" Yuma said.
"Indeed, I do. He is probably with my friend, Dark Magician Girl." Dark Magician explains. "We are heading to the Duel Sanctuary.
Yuma and the others follow Dark Magician hoping to find Sota. It takes awhile for Yuma and his friends to get back to the Duel Sanctuary.
Meanwhile, Sota and Dark Magician Girl are half way to the Duel Sanurary but have to climb the stairs.
"Come on, you lazy kid. We are almost there just pushing those muscles." Dark Magician Girl said. Sota is taking deep breaths. "So...many stairs." Sota hates climbing stairs.
"It is easy for you because you can fly. Man, Astral and Black Mist have it easy." Sota whined. Sota saw something in the corner of his eye. He saw a girl.
"Hey, is that Tam?" Sota wondered. "Tam, is that you Tam?" Sota ask. Tam just then ran off. "Come back!" Sota demands. He went after her. Dark Magician Girl saw he wondering off and went after Sota. She then notices something. There is something wrong.
Yuma, Astral and the gang are about to hand to the Sanctuary until they saw Tom is walking quicker than the others.
"Hold up, kid. It is all right. We will find your sister." Yuma said. The boy turned and looks at him. The boy smiled but in a creepy way. He then starts running off.
"Hey, get back here." Yuma shouted hoping for the boy to stop but he is not stopping. Black Mist, Astral and others decide to go also. They went to the woods and the father they go the darker it gets. They saw a lone opened door. Yuma think that the kid went inside the door.
"Be careful, Yuma." Dark Magician said. "This is the 'Door of Memories'. It shows the memories of people that you know. Yuma hesitated to open but he has to go after Tom so he opens it and went inside.
Then saw darkness in the room. Yuma and the gang went in. Girag saw Ponta's memories of him in the past. Ponta smiled when he remembers those old times but he is happier that he is still with his partner and best friend all this time. Girag smiled also.
Yuma and Astral show the memory of when they first met. Yuma is dueling Shark as Yuma has opened the door and Astral appeared.
"This is when we first met." Astral whispered. Yuma saw Astral smiling looking at the memory where they first met that change their lives.
Black Mist looked around and saw another door. But it is different than any other door: it is Black Mist opened the door. What he saw is a building where there are a few kids and one by one they are taken by two adults with smiles on his face. He saw Sota younger. Sota is sitting and a table.
"Sota?" Black Mist said. Black Mist tries to touch him but it went through.
"Black Mist, that is Sota's memories." Dark Magician explains. Black Mist continues to look. He saw Sota and looks like the age of Yuma, two years ago. He must have been thirteen years old.
Sota is drawing something. He is drawing weird drawings. They are stick figures, purple backgrounds and blue buildings. Black Mist can't make of how or what they are.
Sota is sitting at the table and not talking like he usual self. A few kids went to him and looked at him. One of the kids took his picture and torn it apart.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Sota said.
"These are ugly pictures, why are you even here?" The kids said. "You will never be adopted, not because you are at that age where you can't be adopted but your weirdness." The bully smirks. He tosses the torn picture in the ground and the bullies left. Sota went there a sob.
"Why? Why? Why?" Sota whispered. Then the memories continued. Sota is redrawing the pictures that are torn by the bullies. Black Mist saw Gina but she is younger. She looks like she is at kindergarten.
Gina starts talking to the quiet Sota. "Hello, my name is Gina. I am looking for a brother or a sister." Gina said with a pure smile.
"You should go somewhere else. No one wants me because...I am weird" Sota said. Gina tilts her head and her eyes turn puppy look. "But you seem nice. Will you be my brother?" Gina asks. Sota shake his head no.
Gina dropped her shoulders, she left not to bother him. Then she bumps into the kids that bullied Sota. "I will be your brother." The bully said.
"Really?" Gina said with sparkling eyes.
"Yeah, but you have to be worthy of being our sibling?" The bully said. "Let's go to the backyard and we will test you.
"Ok." Gina expected. Gina and the bullies went outside. Sota saw the bullies taken Gina outside. He got a bad feeling.
The bullies take Gina outside as they show her a mean looking dog. The dog is chewing a huge bone.
"We want you to get the dog's bone away from him and if you do, we will become your sibling." The bully said.
Gina nervous went to the dog and slowly walked to it. But then the dog started to bark. The dog jumped on her and knocks her down.
The dog look like it is going to bite her. "HELP!" Gina yelled as she cried.
"Stop! Spike!" Sota yelled. He went up to the dog. "Stop, she doesn't want to play." Sota try to reason with it. The dog stopped growling and went away. Gina got up and started to sob.
"WAH! I'm so scared." Gina cried. Sota went up to her and hugged her to calm her down. "It's ok. Everything is all right. He just wanted to play but you need an adult to handle him to play with him." Sota explain in a soft voice.
"Oh man, I was hoping that the dog would bite her." One of the bullies said. They nodded but it cause Sota to get angry. He went up to the boy and punches him.
"Why did you do that? You know that you need an adult to play with Spike!" Sota yelled at the bullies. Sota pushed the bully in anger.
"You little!" The bully yelled. "How dare you touch me!" The bullies ganged up on him and push him down at the ground.
Black Mist is surprised that he got angry.
Gina starts crying again. "Stop!" Gina yelled. The adults including Gina's parents, Kevin and Anna came.
"Stop William! That is mean what you did to Sota!" The adult that works in the orphaned says.
Kevin and Anna picked the crying Gina up and hug her tight.
"I'm so sorry. Come back tomorrow." The adult said to Kevin and Anna.
With that Kevin and Anna left the orphanage and left Sota with a scarp in the elbow.
The next day, Sota is sitting at his bed all day as the children have fun. He looked at his bandage that is on his elbow.
There was a knock on the door and the same adult came in and took Sota's hand. She led him to the door and at the other side are Kevin, Anna and Gina.
"Hello, Sota. I want to say thank you for saving our Gina." Kevin said.
"It's ok." Sota said. He looked down not looking at them at the eye.
"We are not here to say thanks. We are here to adopt you." Anna said with a smile. Sota gasped when he heard that they want to adopt him.
"Gina won't stop talking about you when we got home. She really likes you." Gina said as he went to Sota. "Can you be our son?" Gina asks. Sota didn't look at her at the eyes but he nodded yes. With that Sota is adopted.
A few days have pass, Sota hasn't open up to people or his family despite being adopted. Sota is drawing the same pictures that he left behind at the orphanage. He is glad that the bullies are not around anymore. He can now be in peace.
Sota broke a canyon and went to get a new one. He thought there is one at the kitchen but he then saw Gina climbing the kitchen shelves to get a box of cookies.
"Hey, get down from there!" Sota shouted.
"It is ok. I have done this before." Gina said. She reaches for the box but one of her foot lost its footing and fall. She screams as she fell.
Sota saw Gina fall and jumped to her and grabs her, as she is about to hit the ground.
Anna and Kevin saw Sota holding Gina in his arms as the box of cookies fell in the ground.
"Gina, are you ok?" Kevin asks. Gina nodded, as she is about to burst into tears.
"Thank you, Sota for saving Gina." Anna said as she hugs him. Sota never been hugged as he is in tears.
"Why? Why am I crying?" Sota said softly.
"You have been alone, all this time." Anna said. "We are here now. We are family. You can cry, be happy all you want." Hearing those words make Sota break into tears. Sota then hugged Anna, his mother. Till then he finally accept that he is now with a family and he is not alone.
The memories started to fade. Black Mist, Astral, Yuma and the others are speechless on what they have discovered.
"It looks like Sota is adopted and what's more. He never remembers who or what he is in the past." Dark Magician said with a sad tone.
'Sota, you have no memories of what you are?' Black Mist is confused...
