"You can't help who you fall in love with…But we are free of that asshole." Luanne Tanner says to her fourteen-year old daughter Bree. "Freedom!" She yells driving the car she rented with cash she had been saving. They had been planning for years to get away from Luanne's abusive husband, Ronald. Everyone called him Ronny. He was a charmer and seemed like a good guy, until Luanne married him. He started abusing her verbally and then physically. Luanne thought that Bree would bring them closer together, but when she turned six he started abusing Bree as well.
Luanne could not stand for that so a plan was made and the two of them were able to escape the hell of living with Ronald Tanner. "Where are we going?" Bree shyly asks.
"Far, far, away baby girl…"
They drove out of Nevada heading North towards Washington. "You gonna start singing again?"
She sighs, "No…I can't."
"Why?"
"Let it go baby." She couldn't tell her that her voice was ruined because of one of Ronald's beatings. They stop at a truck stop to get something to eat. Luanna orders steak and fries for herself. Bree a bacon cheeseburger with onion rings and a soda.
"Do you think he will find us?"
"God I hope not. You know what? We are going to buy us some wigs and glasses."
"You should go red…" Bree says.
"You should go blonde."
Bree deepens her voice, "We have to talk like this from now on."
They both laugh, "Feels good to laugh again. It's good to hear you laugh."
"Yeah."
They leave the truck stop and drive on. When Luanne gets tired Bree takes the wheel having taken driving classes at school. Luanne had sold her wedding ring for cash along with a few other things to go along with the money she had been saving. After an 886 mile drive they reach Seattle. Luanne got a training job at a dealership. She rented a one-bedroom apartment under the name Tammy Lucaster.
"Okay don't go out for anything…Do not answer the door unless it's the maintenance man…And if he comes here go in the room and lock the door…" She hands her the pepper spray. "Who do we trust?"
"No one!"
"That's my girl." They hug, "Stay safe."
"You too." While her mother is at work Bree takes online classes to keep up her schooling. "How was your first day at work?"
"Good your mother sold half a car today."
Bree frowns, "How do you sell half a car?"
"Well I worked with another salesman to sell it, so I get half the commission."
"Maybe I can get a part time job."
"Maybe…In the summertime when children are out of school."
Luanne's first check is over fifteen hundred dollars before taxes all commission. She pays the rent early which is six hundred and ninety-eight dollars. She has a cell phone she bought used and got cheap service. After all the bills are paid she has a hundred and forty-six dollars left from her first check. From her runaway money as Bree liked to call it she has two thousand in cash left.
"Welcome to Barn's Motors sir how may I help you."
The man is in a wheel chair, "Well aren't you the prettiest Saleswoman I have ever seen. My name is Erick."
"Um…Tammy…My name is Tammy."
He smiles, "Are you sure?"
"Yes…So Mister…"
"Erick is fine."
"Mr. Erick."
"Just Erick please…"
"So Erick…What kind of vehicle are you looking for?"
"A truck not too big, but not too small, used…Don't need to test drive it." She shows him a Ford, a Toyota, and a Chevy. He chooses the Ford. "You don't mind me asking. How are you going to drive?"
"A friend is coming to drive the truck back to my place and then we're gonna do some work on it so I can use my left to break and accelerate." Erick's friend arrives with another man, both are former Marines. "So can I get your number and take you out sometime?"
"Um…I'm sorry no…I'm through with dating…I just want to focus on my daughter…"
"A pity…Hope I see you around."
On her day off Tammy and Brianne as Bree calls herself spend the whole day together. They visit the Needle, ride the fairy, and go the mall. As they eat lunch in the mall food court Erick comes up. "Well hello m'lady…"
"What are you doing here?"
"I always come here for the fries at Crave's." He looks at Brienne, "Is this your sister?"
"My daughter actually…Bree…" She pauses realizing the mistake she made.
"Mom you know I hate that nickname."
"Sorry…Old habits die hard. My daughter Brienne…Brienne this is Erick."
"Nice to meet you as well."
"May I join you?"
"Um…This is actually a mother, daughter thing."
"Oh well maybe next time."
As he wheels off in his chair, Brienne nods his way, "What?"
"I think he likes you and you like him."
She sips some soda into her straw and squirts it at Brienne, who gasps. She does the same and they both laugh. Brienne gets her ears pierced, then they go to a movie and finally home. For the first seven months Luanne and Brienne live in fear that Ronald will find them. Brienne's fifteenth birthday comes and goes. After a year Luanne feels comfortable enough to allow Brienne to attend school.
