They were in some kind of interview room. There weren't any windows and only a few pieces of furniture. Tae-eul had requested an extra chair for Gon's teddy. The men escorting them had regarded her skeptically, but eventually obliged. Now they were waiting for something to happen.
"It's not as exciting being on this end of the questions, is it?" Hyeon-min didn't answer. His arms were folded across his chest and he'd adopted a thousand-yard stare.
Tae-eul tried to pull back her hair, but remembered she had nothing to secure it with. "I swear," she thought, "there's a black hole somewhere filled with hair ties, and when I find it me and the universe are going to have a little chat."
The door to the room opened, and Tae-eul felt a wave of excitement as a familiar face appeared. "Jo Yeong!" She beamed at him.
Jo Yeong didn't react. He was holding a thin folder, which he set down on on the table before them. He glanced at the teddy before sitting down, his expression reserved.
"Do you recognise me?" Tae-eul began hopefully.
Jo Yeong nodded. "Luna." Tae-eul's heart sank.
The comment seemed to snap Hyeon-min out of his daze. "She's definitely not Luna," he muttered.
Tae-eul shot him a look. She needed this to go smoothly.
Jo Yeong opened the file in front of him. "You were spotted at an internet cafe this morning. You met up with your boyfriend Hyeon-min at 1400 hours. You then had an appointment at the hospital with your physician, Dr Ahn. You ended up at a bar." He looked up. "Is that correct?"
She had to give it to Jo Yeong, the facts didn't look great. Her efforts at impersonating Luna might have been well-intended, but they were going to make things harder to explain.
She tried a different approach. "Why were there guards in the bamboo forest?"
"That's classified information," Jo Yeong replied. "Why were you there?"
Tae-eul smiled. "That's also a state secret, I'm afraid."
Jo Yeong sighed and tried again. "There was suspicious activity in the area. The guards were ordered to investigate. Were you aware of that?"
A blinking light in the corner of the room distracted her. "Is there a camera filming us right now?"
"Yes, for our records."
"Could we turn it off?" she asked tentatively.
Jo Yeong stared at her.
"Fine," she sighed, "let's do it your way." Tae-Eul stretched her fingers against the table and sat back in the folding chair. She tried to think of how to phrase things without giving too much away. Inspiration struck her. She leaned forward conspiratorially.
"Do you perhaps know someone who plays the flute?" Jo Yeong's expression remained neutral.
"I was just wondering," she continued, "because I recently started playing myself. Look," she said, slowly pulling the flute from her jacket pocket.
Did Jo Yeong's eyebrow just twitch? She wasn't sure, so she continued.
"I got a bit lost coming here, you know. There were so many doors. It was hard to find the right one." She'd definitely noticed something that time. Tucking the flute back inside her jacket pocket, she glanced once more at the camera.
She expected Jo Yeong to be curious, and ask her where exactly she had come from, but instead he closed the folder.
"I think I've heard enough," Jo Yeong said simply. He got up to leave.
Tae-Eul panicked. She saw her window of opportunity closing and didn't know what to do, so she blurted out the very next thing that popped into her mind.
"Eun-seob's dating Na-ri now." Tae-Eul knew it was a crazy thing to bring up, but she hoped maybe a small part Jo Yeong would remember.
Jo Yeong paused. "They're really cute together," she started babbling. "He told me he's never been happier, and I think he might even propose soon, he just has to-" she stopped abruptly when she saw Jo Yeong's expression. It looked like he'd seen a ghost.
"You do remember!" she gasped.
At that moment the door to the room burst open and a guard poked his head through. "Jo Yeong, there's an urgent call for you. Line one."
Jo Yeong nodded and turned to leave, but there was something Tae-Eul needed to know.
"Did he search for me?" The words slipped out. She hadn't meant to sound so forlorn, but the question had been gnawing at her for days.
For the briefest moment, Jo Yeong's eyes closed and a regretful expression passed over his face. A second later it was gone. He followed the guard into the hall, and the door closed behind them.
Tae-eul's heart was pounding. What had that look meant? Would Jo Yeong pass on her question?
Hyeon-min broke the silence. "Well," he said, rubbing a hand across his face, "that was the weirdest conversation I've ever heard." He turned to study her. "Was that your plan all along? I take back what I said earlier - you'd make a terrible spy."
"Hey!" she warned him, nodding towards the camera.
"Well if they don't work it out themselves, someone should tell them."
Jo Yeong's reaction had cut her down, and she didn't have any energy left to joke. It felt like she'd failed the final test.
"Don't worry," Hyeon-min said softly, "It's going to be fine. We're not under arrest. Just tell them the truth and we can leave."
The truth. What was the truth? That she was hopelessly in love with the King of Corea? That she'd crossed universes and risked everything to find him? Or was the truth less romantic? Perhaps she'd done this all for nothing. Maybe Gon didn't care that she'd come back.
After all she'd done to get here, the thought of leaving was suddenly too much. She pinched one of her legs to stop herself from crying.
"I was so close to seeing him." She couldn't hide the disappointment in her voice.
"Who?"
She gestured towards the bear.
"Wait a second -" Hyeon-min finally put it together. "You're not talking about the King, are you?"
She nodded glumly and Hyeon-min gave her a dazed look. "Wow, you really are something." He tried reassuring her with a few pats on the back. "I know you were really excited, and you got a present and everything… But it's okay." He spoke gingerly, as though trying to prevent a scene. She wondered if this was how he comforted all people he considered crazy. "Not everyone can see the King, you know."
She'd had enough. She decided to tell Hyeon-min everything.
"Actually, I'm-". She had just started speaking when the door flew open again.
Jo Yeong was standing in the entrance looking flustered.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but the King is on his way." Tae-eul's heart started racing. Jo Yeong hadn't let her down.
"Please follow me."
