"Is this your first time in Valencia?" the man asked her. Kara turned her head so that she faced him.
"Yeah...my first time in Spain" she answered leaving out the part where she visited the city in an alternate universe simulation.
"How do you like it?"
"I love it. I mean I love the beach, the food, the people are nice...What about you?"
The man smiled and then turned his head to the lights of the city as if he was remembering his first time visiting the city.
"I enjoy the city too. As you said: beautiful beach, nice people and good food...but I prefer Belgrade. I need to feel at home to truly love a city" the man answered. Kara sighed. His words were true but for someone that has lost their home it was hard to truly feel at home anywhere and she always enjoyed places for the things that made them unique.
"Did I say something wrong?" he asked as he noticed Kara's expression.
"No, no you didn't. I lost my home when I was young...your words just reminded me of how hard it is to feel at home basically anywhere." Kara was surprised by how honest she suddenly was with him. He had this charisma and one would just trust him. He seemed like a good man. He was. But Kara couldn't have known that.
"You never told me your name, I'm Kara" she quickly added.
"Kris" he said and reached out his hand to her. He rolled the R in kRis. Krris. It sounded better that way. Kara took it and introduced herself, too.
"You said your friend brought you here, right? Does she live here?"
"No, she's actually here for a business trip."
"It's a long way from the United States to Spain just to meet a friend on a business trip" he pointed out and smirked. Kara scoffed but smiled.
"It's not what you think. We were fighting, or better not talking anymore and I needed to save our friendship" she explained and thought of Lena. Thinking about her made her smile again. She said she would forgive her one day.
"The way you're smiling I believe you managed to save it."
"Not yet. But she will at least forgive me one day."
"Oh" Kris said and frowned.
"What?"
"I just- don't get this wrong- but I thought your friend was a sort of boyfriend. Something like that. I mean- it could also be your girlfriend too, absolutely. I mean I just-"
"Hahaha, it's alright, don't worry. She is just a friend. My best friend actually. Well, she was."
"And she hopefully will be again soon." Kara liked Kris' accent. He spoke very good English, he obviously spoke a lot with English-speakers, but he still had the charming Slavic accent.
"How do you say lights in Serbian?" Kara wanted to know suddenly.
"Svetla" Kris answered and joined Kara in watching them blink.
"That sounds pretty. Svetla"
Lena [bros I almost said Katie lol - the gorgeous can be very distracting, though to my defense] finished the last meeting she had in Valencia and stepped once again out of the building. She remembered her encounter with Kara the day before. She actually couldn't think about anything else really. She walked along the side-way where Kara had been standing with her. She felt better too. She was so lost in her thoughts and the memories that she couldn't get out of the way fast enough and bumped right into a man in a leather jacket.
"Perdón" she quickly apologized and looked up. She looked right up in the face she had wished to see again since she had last seen it: Kris was smiling at her with his handsome and gentle face. He couldn't stop the grin. Lena couldn't either.
"You"
"Yes"
"How-"
"Lena"
Both of them hugged tightly.
"I was worried I would never see you again."
"I knew we were going to. I could feel it in my heart."
"But- what are you doing here, in Valencia?" Lena stared at him disbelieving. The emotions came back like a big wave. This time it was Kris who tugged her gently with him so they wouldn't stand in the way.
"I'm visiting my sister" he explained.
"She moved to Valencia after she found the love of her life on vacation here."
'That could have been our story, too' Lena thought.
"How wonderful" she remarked.
"And I guess you are on one of your business trips again" he assumed correctly. Lena just smiled as an answer.
"Did you come alone?" he asked her curiously.
"Yes, although I have met my -" she didn't know how to describe her relationship to Kara at the moment. They were not friends yet... "-someone"
"Your someone?" Kris asked, disappointment written in his face.
"Not like that- I mean she's a friend" she explained.
"I've heard a story like that just yesterday" he told her and smiled again.
"Actually I heard something like that a year ago" he added and threw her a glance that was hard to interpret.
"Well- did you come alone?" she said to change the topic.
"I didn't. I came with Marija and Stefan. Do you remember? From the bar" he explained.
"I do, in fact. So...are you and Marija?" she asked without asking. He shook his head.
"No, we are all friends."
"OK"
"Yes." Awkward silence. "Would you like to go drink coffee with me?"
"Yes, I would very much do so" she answered immediately. Maybe she had taken the wrong choice when she decided to return to National City the year before. Maybe she had belonged to him all this time.
He was happy to hear that and then started laughing.
"You have to choose one, I don't know good cafés here, although this is not my first time here" he admitted.
"Don't worry, I know my way around."
They sat down in the very café she had sat in the day before with Kara.
"I still can't believe I ran into you" she said.
"I am happy you did" he responded.
"How long are you staying, Kris?"
"Two weeks, my sister is moving tomorrow and I help her carry some boxes and get comfortable in the new apartment with her husband."
"That's sweet of you"
"You know me" he boasted jokingly. "And you? How long are you staying?"
"Oh, I have planned only the two days so far...bu I am considering an extension. There's no place like Barcelona" Lena answered contently.
"So you may do a trip even" Kris stated happily. Happy she was staying. Lena's eyes fixated him. He was so handsome and he didn't seem to know it. His dark hair was still styled back but it was a little bit longer than when she had last seen him.
"You're still as beautiful as I remember you. Maybe even more" he suddenly broke her thoughts. She blushed. 'Luthors don't blush' she told herself but it didn't help.
"Look, I would love to spend the time we have here with you" he admitted. It might come off strange to anyone but them. As Lena had already realized: the connection they shared was unique. It didn't seem strange to her. She wanted to spend her time with him, too. This time nothing was holding her back. Nobody was holding her back.
Kara was torn. She knew she should give Lena all the time she needed so that they could be friends again. But she felt it in the air that her window was getting smaller by the minute. She felt like she should run to her and grab her and fly away so that they could be united forever. No. Her goal was to earn back Lena's trust and then be friends again. For now. She couldn't shake the odd feeling, though. She decided to text Lena and ask if she was flying back today as planned. In the simulation she didn't. After her cellphone vibrated she found out that Lena was not flying back in reality either.
'What reason does she have?' Kara wondered.
Do you want to meet?
I am unavailable at the moment.
Sorry, it's hard to turn off the CEO language after a long day /
How about tonight? I am going with three friends to a bar.
Lena answered. Kara told her that she would be happy and wondered which friends she could possibly be talking about. That definitely didn't happen in the simulation. So Kara went shopping because she had not brought any luggage. She wanted to look her best. She didn't want to overdress but also she didn't want to be too casual. She decided to go in a eggshell-white dress that was like a long wide t-shirt that went just above the knees and wore a belt to highlight her waist and expose her figure a little. She wore a tight leather jacket, all black sneakers and her hair in a bun. She looked hot. They met at a bar not far from the café she and Lena had talked in. She greeted Lena with a hug and was relieved when she hugged her back. Then Lena turned to two men and a short woman that were standing behind her.
"Kara, this is Stefan" she pointed at a blonde tall guy in his late twenties with very short hair and blue eyes [like Relja] "this is Marija" the short cute girl with brown hair and blue eyes "and this is Kris" she introduced the man she hadn't looked at yet.
"Kris! I know you" she said surprised. Kris kissed her on the cheeks three times as a greeting and Lena watched them confused. Marija and Stefan also kissed Kara on her cheeks three times as they do in Serbia.
"So this is your friend on a business trip" Kris put together. Kara smiled as they parted.
"We met on a roof" she explained to Lena.
"How do you know these lovely Serbs?" she asked Lena. Marija smiled at the comment. Lena told Kara as they sat down at a table in the corner of the bar.
"Last year, I was on a business trip in Belgrade and I accidentally attended a performance of the amazing Senidah where Kris invited me to their table. We just clicked" she said about the group, but the way she looked at Kris said they just clicked. Kara bit on her lower lip. She didn't like the way Lena looked at Kris and she didn't like that Kris was so handsome either.
"I love your outfit, Kara" Marija said with the cutest accent and smiled at her. KaRa, the r was rolled as in Krris. Kara liked the sound of it.
"Thank you, Marija" and the Serbs were amazed by how perfectly she pronounced her name. Lena seemed like a different person in between these people. She smiled and was happy and it hurt Kara because the last time she had seen her friend like this was already too long ago. Before she found out about Kara's other identity. Kris stood up and walked to the DJ that was playing for the night to ask for a song. It was a song called 'piješ' from Senidah. And Kara was surprised to see Lena really know the song and vibing with it while the Serbs knew the chorus. Even Lena said "a ti samo piješ" and Kara was astonished by what sides she didn't know of her friend. She spoke Spanish, had Serbian friends and some connection to a man she had never mentioned to Kara before. It was impressive but also intimidating. As the evening went on Kara's unfounded fear of her window of opportunity getting closer by the minute did turn out to be founded. Kris and Lena were joking and laughing and softly hitting each other's arms while doing both. Kara's jaw tensed. Then she felt Marija's hand on her arm.
"Are you OK?" she asked silently so only the two of them could hear. Clearly she had noticed Kara's expression.
"Yes I am but I appreciate you asking."
"Of course. Do you not enjoy this night?"
Kara took a moment to think before answering: "I had a tough time and I can't shake the feeling off so easily."
Marija smiled again and exposed her pretty teeth.
"Then we should dance! Dancing helps to shake off any feelings" she promised so Kara nodded and let the petite woman lead her to the dance floor. Stefan joined them. Lena and Kris were still deep in their conversation. So when they played the song MAMACITA Kara danced with the two Serbs and glanced over to Lena hoping to lock eyes just like in the simulation - when Lena only had eyes for Kris. But then soft hands touched her face and turn her head away from Lena and Kris.
"Don't think about them when you should enjoy yourself here" Marija told her. She placed a kiss on Kara's cheek and sang to MAMACITA.
They ordered drinks and Kara was glad she wouldn't get drunk because after the last time she didn't feel like it anymore. 'However I could drink and pretend so that I could 'accidentally' make Lena jealous with Stefan' she thought. 'Wait, no. Are you sixteen or why are you thinking like that? You want to be friends with Lena...remember!" she scolded herself. Kara didn't understand what was driving her to be this way: drinking alcohol, being jealous and making high-school-girl-plans to make her best friend jealous. At least she was there with Lena. That meant progress. Even although Lena spent most of the time with Kris.
Lena was incredibly happy to spend time with her 'safe haven'. She also didn't mind the confused glances of Kara from time to time. Kris was the perfect man: he was smart, handsome and funny and Lena would never get tired of talking to him. He made her feel safe and with him it was as if she had known him forever. One would just trust him because he didn't seem to have any bad intentions. After Lena looked away from the man for the first time in half an hour she noticed that Kara and Marija were still dancing while Stefan sat back next to her and Kris drinking Sangría. She also noticed how close Kara and Marija were dancing and felt ill at the sight. So she looked back to Kris who was comforting. When it was really late they decided to meet all together again the next day at Lena's hotel which had a karaoke bar. When the Serbs already left the bar to wait outside so that Stefan could smoke a cigarette, Lena approached Kara for the first time in this night.
"Hey"
"Hey" Kara said and could not suppress the disappointment in her voice.
"I'm sorry I haven't spent much time with you- I just haven't seen Kris in such a long time" Lena tried to explain herself.
"But you did, however, seem to have a great time with Marija..."
"Yes, I did" Kara answered.
"Where are you staying tonight? Or are you flying home?" Lena still wasn't used to ask this. Fly home.
"I thought I would but Marija and Stefan invited me to crush at their holiday apartment. They have a couch in Marija's room left and I have been on the roof of this very building already."
"Where you met Kris."
"Exactly. He is staying at his sisters apartment, though."
"OK" Lena said. She was not a fan of how fast Kara and Marija and Stefan had become friends. She didn't want them to be friends. Last time she shared friends with Kara she broke off all contact with them. But it was an unfounded concern, she knew that. Kara had never taken anyone from her.
"Are you OK with staying with them?" she asked to reassure but she didn't offer her another possibility. She wasn't ready to share a room with her yet.
"Yeah- where else would I be" Kara just said and followed the Serbs who were still standing outside.
Kara let out a sigh. Last time, in her simulation, she slept in Lena's suite. Although sleeping was not a long part of the night. It was weird now to think about it but this simulation was more like an Alternate Universe, like the safe haven stories in her head. It wasn't weird. At least she tried to convince herself of that. She followed Stefan on the streets that were only enlightened by the pretty and artistic street lights. Marija took her hand. Kara wasn't used to so much intimacy between friends anymore but that was more common in eastern European and western Asian countries. It had been on Krypton, too. She had missed that during her time in National City. Kris had said goodbye already, too since his sister's apartment was on the way to Marija's and Stefan's holiday apartment.
"What's up with you and Lena?" Marija asked and pronounced the E in Lena like in the word "mEn".
"Hmm that's a long story."
"We have time. All night" Stefan assured. It was cute how they cared.
"So I have been keeping a secret from her for a long time. And when she found out, it wasn't from me because I didn't tell her. Now she is mad, which I can understand, because I betrayed her by not trusting her."
"Why didn't you trust her?"
"It's not- it's not that I didn't...it is very complicated."
"You didn't tell her you were lesbian, right?" Stefan asked curiously. Kara's eyes widened.
"What? I'm- I'm not gay" she countered.
"I see the way you look at her, Kara" Marija agreed with Stefan.
"I do not bother but Kris is my friend. And he likes Lena. So if you and her have a thing please tell him now before he gets hurt too much."
"It's not a thing. She does not even consider me a friend these days. Plus she's totally smitten for Kris. So even if I did like her that way, which I don't, I didn't have a chance anyways."
"I don't get all this drama" Stefan said. "Try tell her how you feel, not just think think think" he added.
"He's right, Kara. Sometimes you just have to be honest and open about your feelings" Marija agreed and put her other hand on Kara's shoulder. They hugged and then they went on to their holiday apartment.
Lena pushed Kara back at the wall. Kara could have resisted the force effortlessly but she let the CEO take the lead. Lena held both of Kara's hands on each side of her head against the wall with her hands, fingers intertwined. Kara couldn't stop a moan escape her when the hot human leaned forward to kiss her neck. Then she felt Lena's tongue trace her neck up to her jaw. Kara inhaled loudly and squeezed Lena's hands, trying not to break them accidentally.
"Don't stop" she moaned. Lena placed kisses on her jaw and Kara freed one hand to wrap it around Lena's waist and pull her tight. Lena used the free hand to drive Kara crazy by tracing her fingers down Kara's muscular abdomen. Then she felt hands softly move from her waist up to her breast. From behind. She turned her head and saw Kris' face approach hers to kiss her. After their lips connected Kara took Kris' face and kissed him passionately. Lena felt jealousy rise and pulled them apart.
"Who are you jealous of?" they asked at the same time in the same weirdly pitched voice as they stared at her.
Hello again my lovely little audience hahaha
We are approaching the end of this fanfiction. I believe the next chapter will be its last, maybe one more if I want to keep the chapters short. I hope you like it. Since I'm graduating this school year, I spend a lot of time studying which explains the amount of time I need for a chapter... sorry :( but I rather write when I have time and am passionate about the story.
The reviews make my day, so cute of you:)
Until next time!
