Lena opened her eyes in distress. She was sweating and left her bed immediately because she didn't like the feeling of her bed sheets sticking to her skin. She rubbed her temples trying to sort her thoughts. The dream was hot and disturbing at the same time.
"Who am I jealous of, though?" she asked herself out loud. She showered and got dressed. She was on vacation so she dressed in a long summer dress and enjoyed the warm breeze as soon as she stepped on her balcony. The sea was calm since it was still early. She watched the small waves sweep along the beach. The beach bar wasn't open yet. Her mind didn't stop circling around her dream. Kara was her weak point. Lena has never had so many feelings for anyone else before. But now there was Kris and she felt appreciated and as if she had a future with someone who liked her the same way for the first time. Kara was her cure, yes but she was also toxic to her. She had made Lena vulnerable when nobody else could. Why would she want to be vulnerable when she could feel safe with Kris? Lena sighed and left her suite to go for a walk along the beach, her headphones plugged in. Listening to Senidah would be too much of a reminder of her emotional turmoil so she listened to Spanish music, Rosalía. Nevertheless her thoughts kept wandering back to Kris and Kara and her dream. She knew that she couldn't quit Kara. If she was going to be with Kris, like it seemed, she would stay with him this time. She would live in her safe haven, in Serbia with a man she felt deeply connected to. She would move L-Corp to Belgrade or a big city nearby and build up a life there. It hurt being in National City anyways.
Kara was woken up by the sweetest voice.
"Karra, do you want to have breakfast with us?" Marija asked. She smiled and Kara had to smile too. She nodded and got up to get dressed. She praised herself silently for taking clothes with her last night. Still, the new clothes still smelt like a fashion store, which she didn't like much. Her new "roomies" had already prepared the food and were just waiting for her. It felt nice to feel so welcomed by people she literally just met the day before. The breakfast was hearty and would provide her with enough energy to start the day. The always hungry Kryptonian was very happy about that.
"How did you sleep?" Stefan asked. Kara shrugged and swallowed her meal.
"Not so good. How about you?"
"I slept well" Stefan answered.
"I noticed you were very restless" Marija said.
"I'm sorry if I ruined your sleep, too" Kara apologized but Marija's expression assured her that it was fine.
"I never asked. Where do you work, if you have a job?"
"I'm a reporter at CatCo magazine, but right now I took a few days off. How about you?"
"I'm a nurse in Belgrade and Stefan works in IT. Kris is a reporter, too" Marija answered. "I find you a little bit alike, you and Kris. You know I noticed yesterday when you both wore black leather jacket" she added.
"Do you mean we look alike? Because I don't think so, his hair is dark and his eyes, too" Kara disagreed.
"No, I mean from your personality. You're both very, uhm... Stefan, kako se to kaže...uhm...harizmatičan?"
"You have good charisma" Stefan helped out.
"Yes, and you both are reporters and you both are very likable" Marija finished.
"I am flattered, Marija."
'How amazing - Lena falls for the male version of me' Kara thought to herself sarcastically.
Kara had to go shopping again to not show up in the same outfit again to Karaoke night. She was not as excited for the night as she had been the day before. She didn't feel like seeing Lena gazing into Kris' eyes for the whole evening again. She bought a dark blue tight dress that flattered her figure and went down just below her knees. She decided to wear the leather jacket again but wore her white sneakers she brought with her from National City and her hair open. So when she came back to drive with a taxi to Lena's hotel with her Serbs, as she referred to them now, she didn't understand why Marija giggled. Kara just frowned but she understood the second they stopped at Kris' sister's apartment to pick him up. Kris was wearing a dark blue t-shirt with his black leather jacket and white sneakers.
"Looks like we're matching" he said happily as he placed himself on Kara's right side. He smelt good. Marija just smirked as Kara thew her a glance that said: don't say it!
Lena waited outside to receive Kara and the Serbs. When Kris exited the taxi and Kara right behind him she was startled for a second. The way they both looked reminded her somehow of her dream. She shook the feeling off and they followed her to a small but crowded hotel bar that had a karaoke stage. Two guys were singing off-key "Hey DJ" by CNCO at that very stage. She noticed Kara's weird expression. She looked like she'd seen this before. Then Kara looked around as if she was looking for someone. Lena couldn't have known that she was scanning the area for the guys she had sung MAMACITA with in the alternative universe. Then their gazes crossed leading them to lock eyes for a moment. Kara's beautiful blue eyes, her lips slightly cocked up at the ends to a subtle smile. Looking at Kara gave Lena chills and the short moment felt like time had stopped. Her heart surely missed a beat and she just cherished the beautiful woman, her chiseled features and the unique way of looking at her. Then she was torn back to life when Kris took her hand to lead her to a free table. Marija took Kara's hand and led her to follow Lena and Kris. Stefan followed. They ordered drinks and Kara ordered peach ice tea. She knew that melocotón was the Spanish word for peach. Lena didn't know how, as far as she knew, Kara didn't speak Spanish. But Kris made her stop thinking about it when he gently lay his hand on her shoulder, so that he half-hugged her. She looked at him and thought about how she planned to stay with him if he asked. Stefan went outside to smoke and Kara and Marija joined him. They could hear another pair sing karaoke in the background. As soon as they were alone Kris turned his torso to face Lena and took her hand.
"Lena...last year, you said you couldn't stay in Belgrade because you have a home with responsibilities, friends and people you love, right?"
"Yes, I did."
"Will you take the same choice if I ask you again after tonight?" he asked. Lena remained silent for a moment. She wished to have an answer but she wasn't sure yet.
"I'd never lie to you Lena, I'd never betray you. You will always be my first interest and I'd never put anything before you" Kris promised. It was as if he knew. As if he knew she was talking about Kara when she said she had people who she loved. As if he knew Kara did all those things he promised to never do.
"You will see when you ask me after tonight, Kris" she answered mysteriously so she could take a little more time for consideration. She needed to talk to Kara. Yes, she was disappointed and betrayed by her, but she had also loved Kara for a long time. Somehow, since their friendship was broken, Lena had got more and more the feeling that Kara's feelings towards her were maybe stronger than Lena had thought all this time. However she didn't know, she couldn't know, if it was worth declining an offer like the one Kris made her. She did give her reasons to choose Kris, she didn't not to.
Kara stepped back into the bar she had first seen in the alternate universe. The alternate evening she had there with Lena...thinking about it made Kara's heart catch fire. Lena approached her the moment she could see the table they were seated at. Lena grabbed her wrist and signaled her to follow. So she did. She followed the gorgeous woman, her dark hair that was in a high ponytail right in front of Kara's eyes. Kara swallowed. Lena was most definitely the most beautiful woman on the planet. The most beautiful woman she had ever seen on all the planets she had ever been on. They distanced from the stage so that they could talk without the music making it hard to understand the other one.
"Kara."
"Lena."
A long stare. Kara was afraid of what Lena was going to say. She could feel it in her guts that she wouldn't want to hear it.
"Kris - he asked me to stay with him" she finally said. Kara swallowed hard again.
"Wh-what" she cleared her throat "what did you say?"
"I said I will tell him when the evening is over."
"Do you want to?"
"I don't know, Kara. I don't know what should be holding me back? I like Kris and I really believe that I could be happy with him. You know, since the last time I was in Belgrade with him, I imagined us being together in a small town in Serbia that he told me about any time that I was overwhelmed and felt hopeless."
"Like a safe haven" Kara concluded and finally understood alternate-universe-Lena's proposal of the safe haven. Facts weren't made up there, just mixed up, Kara recalled. Lena watched Kara as if she was begging her to say something that would give her a reason to not stay with Kris.
"Yes, like a safe haven. I have been thinking about that a lot recently" Lena said and Kara felt the guilt creeping up her spine. She had pushed Lena away from her. And now she should tell her not to do something that could make her happy and that had a future? Kara saw how happy Lena was with these people, with Kris.
"He would come with us to National City?" she asked although she knew, that it wasn't like this. Kara knew that Lena would go with Kris to Belgrade.
Lena shook her head.
"Why are you telling me this? I thought you weren't ready to be friends yet" Kara asked. She hated the way she sounded while she said it. Reproachful.
"Perhaps I am" Lena said. Normally Kara would have jumped in joy. Being friends was her goal in the end, wasn't it? She could just force a smile.
"I'm happy if you're happy" she mumbled quickly before turning away from Lena so that she would not see the tears rolling out of Kara's eyes.
"Where are you going?" Lena wanted to know. The last karaoke singer had just finished his song.
"Sing a song" Kara answered as soon as she remembered the simulation. How they connected when she was on stage and Lena cheered in the crowd. This time she wouldn't be singing MAMACITA. She entered the stage and told the DJ to play Ariana Grande's 'My Everything'. Kara knew, if she didn't make a move now, if she wasn't entirely honest now she would lose Lena for good. What better way to show your feelings than like this? She prayed to Rao that the feelings alternate universe Lena had for her were shared by this Lena. If she lost Lena as a friend again and she moved away...she couldn't think about it.
As Kara stood on the stage she felt the crowd's eyes on her. There were her Serbs rooting for her surprised, there was Kris raising his glass to her, there was Lena, still a little on the other side of the bar, confusion written on her face. Then the chords on the piano started.
F# , F#7/E, B, Bm6
Kara started to sing and as she was a gifted singer, it was beautiful. When she sang: "I guess you don't know what you got 'til it's gone" she locked eyes with Lena.
"And now that she's gone, my heart is missing something
So it's time to push my pride away."
[... listen to the song it you want]
"You are, you are, you are my everything" she finished the song. A tear drop rolling down her face. She hadn't once broke eye-contact with Lena who had tears in her eyes now too. The crowd applauded Kara greatly. They were touched and amazed by Kara's talent. Kris just nodded. He had been suspecting that Kara and Lena had a thing but he sincerely wished it was at least over now. He liked Lena. Kara descended from the stage and earned a few extra whistles from her Serbs. She headed 'straight' to Lena.
"This was beautiful, Kara."
"Thank you. It was also the truth." Kara laid both hands on Lena's shoulders.
"I'm glad that you are ready to be friends - but what if I don't want to be just friends anymore?"
Lena opened her mouth as to say something but she didn't right away. Kara watched Lena's face with so much love. She was her favorite person. How could she not love her?
As Lena stared at Kara she couldn't believe any of it was real. But who was Kris, or James or any of the people she had ever been interested in when just looking at Kara made her insides feel warm and her heart pound fast and loudly.
"If you want me to come back with you, you will have to say it. If you love me, Kara, I will always choose you. But I will not decline an offer like the one Kris made me for something that isn't real, doesn't have a chance...a future" she finally answered. Kara smiled at her.
"I love you, Lena. I love you and your brilliant mind, your pure character and your beauty. I am a coward which is why I was also not aware of how much you meant to me. I am so so sorry I hurt you and I know that I am not easy...but I love you and I can't imagine a place I'd rather be at than by your side. The past weeks without you have been the worst of my life and I've seen my whole planet die. I spent so much time thinking about how I could fix things with you, save us. Lena, I want you to meet my Earth family, to show you places I have found and never shown to anyone else. I want to spend my life with you, because you are my safe haven."
And then Kara cupped Lena's face with both hands. Before Lena could process any of what had happened in the past 15 minutes she felt warm and supersoft lips on hers. So gentle that she was afraid they would leave again before she had the chance to kiss her back. So she passionately grabbed Kara's head from behind to pull her closer. They deepened the kiss without once pulling back and Kara placed her hands now on Lena's waist. But then Lena did pull back, aware of their surroundings.
"Kara. I am more than glad about your honesty. Nevertheless...Let's not do this here, OK?" she whispered. Kara agreed and traced her fingers along Lena's arms.
"Of course" Kara stumbled, happy to have kissed Lena. Lena grinned.
Lena led them to a quieter place in the hallway.
"Kara...I will not stay with Kris...but we do have to talk. We will talk about us in National City, though."
Kara just smiled warm and nodded.
"I have to talk to Kris now. I have to tell him that I am not staying with him. He deserves an explanation" she said. Kara nodded again and stayed while Lena walked over to Kris. Kara sighed. The simulation, the alternate universe. She needed to see what was possible to admit that she wanted it. She always loved Lena but she never dared to think about how being with her could actually be. She was glad her mission worked. Her relationship was saved- no even more honest now. Kara would never lie to her favorite person ever again.
Kara and Lena spent the rest of the night with the Serbs, Kris was obviously not happy but he also understood. It was their last night together as Lena decided to head back to National City the next day, to fix some things. Kara was incredibly excited about Lena coming back with her. She had to admit that she would miss their new friends but with her flying ability she wouldn't have too many problems visiting them any time.
Lena's jet would fly them back to National City early the next morning. They said goodbye to the Serbs, who made them promise to visit them in Belgrade soon, at about 1 AM.
"Seems like we've got a minute for ourselves now" Lena stated and pointed to the table to sit down. But Kara had other plans. She thought back to her last night of the alternate universe.
"Lena L- I can't believe I'm really going to say this- Lena Luthor, do you want to go skinny dipping?" she quoted herself. Lena blushed.
"It is dark outside...and we could talk in the pool too."
"It is warm enough, indeed" Lena smiled.
"Nonetheless, I have something else in mind."
Kara and Lena walked along the beach and listened to Lena's music. Their hands touched and Lena grabbed Kara's. They locked eyes and sat down on the sand.
It was still warm outside and the moonshine reflected on the sea's surface.
"I noticed that you feel comfortable and happy with the Serbs and their culture...so I'm ready to move to Belgrade with you - I mean I like the Serbs too and Serbia is pretty central and maybe Europe would be glad to have a Superhero too. And a reporter of course"
"That is very attentive and kind of you...but I do want to see our friends again" she said.
"Our friends. I like what I'm hearing."
Lena smiled and there was love in the way she looked at Kara.
"So, did you only want to show me the music or..." Kara started to ask when she was interrupted by Lena's lips on hers. She was so soft. They kissed softly, no fast, greedy movements. They connected with their lips and fingers intertwined. There was no rush, they both finally felt safe. They have arrived in their safe haven. However that did not diminish the passion and the long longing they had for each other. Kara's body was flooded with the most beautiful electrical sparks.
Then Lena kissed her way to Kara's ears and asked "would you like to continue this in my suite?"
Lena giggled when Kara let herself fall down beside her. They were still naked and breathing hard. Kara watched her confused.
"Why are you laughing? Didn't you like what I was doing?" she asked insecure.
Lena shook her head. "No, it's quite the opposite. I loved what you were doing, I just wonder how you knew that I like it when you..."
"Yeah, you like this thing, right?" Kara giggled now too. Her "first time" with alternate universe Lena was very... informative. Lena still couldn't see through how Kara knew or why she found that funny. But Kara decided better not to tell.
Instead she turned to her side to watch her love. "I love you, Lena. You're my best friend and the most precious person to me."
"I love you, too."
They needed no blankets thanks to the warm night in Valencia. They fell asleep holding each other.
Hey my loyal readers
I hope you liked this fanfiction. It was my first and also the first story I've ever written and finished. I really hope you enjoyed reading it and that you liked the ending and how the story somehow turned and formed. I appreciate you all and the nice comments. Be safe you all :)
PS: I honestly don't know whether it makes sense to hope for supercorp to really happen in the last season or not because it does seem kind of unlikely. But maybe that's not as bad as it appears: the supercorp ship has created a large fandom and community and sparked so much creativity already. Maybe this is BECAUSE the producers haven't given the shippers what they so eagerly hope for- so they need this even more (fanfictions or videoclips etc.) So yes, I would absolutely be happy about Supercorp to really happen, but I am thankful for what it has already brought us.
Again, thank you all for reading and I hope you enjoyed it.
See you
-C
