A/N: Thank you Mphs95 for reviewing the previous chapter! I really appreciate it.
"I can't believe Lilly talked all of us into this," Hodgins whined as he packed his running shoes and dropped them into the sports bag placed on their bed. It was 7 am on a Saturday. There wasn't a pressing case to work on and even if there had been, Cam had made sure they all had time to be at the woods for the team building activity anyway.
"Come on, you love the outdoors," Angela said as she brushed her hair to put it in a high ponytail. Checking in the mirror if she had gotten it right, she ran her fingers through her tied up locks. It had been a while since she had gone for a run and she had never participated in organized runs let alone a mud run for teams.
"Yeah, but this is running 7 miles through dirt and whatever on a Saturday morning." He turned to Angela and walked her way. "A morning which we could have used for much more fun and energizing activities." He hugged her from behind placing a kiss on her neck as he nuzzles her, meeting her eyes in the mirror.
Angela chuckled. "That would have been nice too, but we'll have a chance tomorrow morning." Angela turned in his arms. "Dad is watching Micheal V until lunchtime tomorrow, so we'll have all morning for a lazy Sunday."
Hodgins growled. "I can't wait. You look so hot in this outfit."
Angela smiled, pressing a kiss on his lips. "Thanks. I finally feel like I am finally getting back to my usual shape and size."
Their eyes lingered. "We should probably go, otherwise we're only going to be doing the horizontal version of cardio," Hodgins said.
Angela poked him. "Bugs and mud always get you happy and excited."
"I really hope we can take a shower after this is done," Cam said as she dropped her bag beside Caroline's.
Booth snorted. "You can when you get home. I do believe there are some people to hose people down after the finish but don't expect to stay and then get clean at all. Mud and water are going to get everywhere."
Cam cringed. "Thanks, Seeley, remind me to thank Lilly for selling me on this team building idea."
Booth chuckled in amusement of Camille's disgust.
Caroline was busy putting out all the homemade things she had brought for when everyone was done with the run. Deciding to speak up she turned her attention to Cam. "Cher, even a shining star like Lilly is entitled to bad ideas and don't blame her for your own fault by encouraging her idea."
Cam rolled her eyes playfully.
Everyone was chatting with each other waiting until it would be time to start.
"Wait, where is Lilly?" Cam asked as everyone was standing around her, waiting for Cam to give some words of encouragement.
"Yeah, where is the cause for our muddy misery?" Booth said with a grin, looking around to try and spot her in the crowd.
"Booth", Bones chastised him. "I think it is a great idea for all of us to battle nature's forces together. It will help with us feeling like a community and dirt and the outdoors aide our immune systems. Aside from that, our endorphins will get a..."
Booth interrupted her by kissing her. "You were saying?" He rhetorically asked. "This is good for your immune system too." He gestures between themselves, wiggling his eyebrows.
The whole team catcalled, causing Bones to blush. As long as she had been at the Jeffersonian there had been absurd amounts of interest in her love life or lack thereof. Though she had never bad trouble discussing her tales of the bedroom with her close friends, she has always made it a point to keep the displays of affection away from her coworkers. Especially considering that quite a few interns were around."
Lilly waved at the group, unaware of the passion the rest of the team had just witnessed. "I am here, I am here. One tip: don't go into the bathrooms, they are already disgusting and people aren't even muddy yet." Lilly looked disgusted, making the group chuckle and nod.
"Great, now that we are all complete..." Cam said. "I am happy we're all here on our free Saturday morning to compete in this mud run. The most important part is that we're competing as a team, let's support each other to make it through the finish line and have some fun. We are all in pretty good shape so let's show everyone here how fast and tactile we are!"
Everyone clapped, cheering each other on and getting themselves rived up.
"Yeah! Let's win this race. We're better than everyone here." Daisy said. Her cheery comment immediately followed by a somewhat stern look from Sweets. Daisy looked down at her running shoes as she remembered that a comment like that wasn't the best way to stay in people's good graces.
Soon enough it was time to start. The parkour started at an open field in the woods. There was music at the start and after good luck wishes from the organization and the start shot, they were off.
The first part was just a two-mile run through nature. The very fanatical teams were trying to beat each other to the first obstacle.
"Yeah, like that is going to work", Arastoo said under his breath more to the open air than to someone in particular as one of the runners almost pushed him off the trail to get past him.
Team Jeffersonian was doing rather well. They weren't ahead of the race but everyone was able to keep up and they had nice little tempo going. Booth and Brennan were leading the pack, followed by Cam, Wendell, Hodgins, and Daisy. Behind them were Lilly, Arastoo and Abernathy. Running anchors were Angela and Sweets.
Lilly smiled to herself, enjoying the view of Wendell's backside. Her smile turning into a grin as she thought of how she was going to tell him later about the stunning view she had right now.
After two miles they reached the first obstacle. It was a giant mud bath with barbed wires above it, requiring everyone to crawl through it. Booth sighed. "I hated this in the army and I hate it now."
Bones smiled at him as she eagerly started to crawl. "That is not the right ghost, Booth."
"I was already wondering when things would get muddy," Hodgins said, excited to make this run a giant success.
"Oh no, I had hoped this one would have been more near the end of the run," Cam said, hating the idea of getting mud in her face.
Soon enough they had made it through their mud initiation, continuing on the run.
Next up there was a two-person high wooden wall. Booth and Hodgins decided to shoulder everyone to help them get over the wall. Abernathy grinned as he watched his teammates go up and over the wall one at a time. "Hey guys, you know this would be about as easy," Abernathy yelled as he took a few steps back for a head start followed by a jump, catching the top of the wall and pulling himself up.
"Show off", Arastoo said annoyed as he dropped himself onto the other side of the wall. Mud wasn't something he really liked. Getting dirty in general wasn't something he enjoyed. That was why he was trying to become a forensic anthropologist and not a coroner.
After Hodgins had helped Booth up the ridge and they both had jumped down it was time to pick up a very long tree log.
"Okay, we'll need everyone's help carrying this," Cam said, immediately taking the lead.
"On three," Booth suggested as everyone tried to get into the most ideal position.
"One.
Two.
Three! Lift!"
The log wasn't as heavy as Angela had expected and crossing the line where they could drop the piece of wood went rapidly.
"Yeah! That is what I am talking about," Sweets yelled. He hadn't felt this strong and manly in a long time.
"Come on, let's keep going!" Cam tried to encourage her team as she clapped her hands. "We just passed those overachievers that pushed everyone out of the way at the start." She pointed to the team that had started off wearing yellow shirts but were now as brown as the rest of the contestants. That team wasn't focused enough for the team part as the dropped their log, dropping it on the foot of a team member who howled out of pain.
Angela chuckled a little out of breath, smiling at Hodgins sparkling eyes as they secretly enjoyed the other team's misery. Daisy was already off and on her way to the balancing beams.
Standing at the platform, Lilly looked down into the muddy waters. "Damn this is much higher than I thought... "
Hodgins chuckled at her words. "You'll be fine, jockey. You know how to swim if you lose your balance!" He stepped onto the beam shuffling to the other side of the man-made lake. "See? Easy!" He shouted back at her.
Bones and Booth took the opportunity to battle against each other in who could walk across the beam the fastest. With her history of walking rope, Bones had no problem beating Booth, making her cheer proudly as she jumped down from the platform. All Booth did in response was smile and enjoy his partner's antics.
Arastoo was the unlucky duck to fall into the water. Angrily he splashed the water by hitting his flat hand onto the water surface. Losing wasn't something he enjoyed and he always made an effort to do his absolute best to end in the top three.
Lilly had waited until everyone had crossed and still was hesitant. She didn't fear heights per se, she feared the possibility of falling. With Arastoo having 'failed' and caught a wet suit, the irrationality of her fears had increased exponentially.
"Hurry up, Johnson!" Booth screamed from across the beam as the whole team waved for her to just give it a shot. The tone in the agent's voice made it really easy to imagine Booth as an army instructor, responsible for drilling the newbies into soldier shape.
"You can do it, Lilly!" Angela encouraged the intern, the others quickly joining in.
"Or just jump into the water and swim here like a squid trying to be faster than a sailfish!" Abernathy suggested.
Lilly looked across the pond, liking Fin's idea. Like a swimmer she dove into the muddied-up water, coming up past the halfway point.
The team chanted. "Yeah! That is it!"
"Wow, maybe we all should have jumped in," Wendell said as Lilly made it through the water a lot quicker than most of them had done walking.
Hodgins grinned. "Yeah, it does seem to be working for her."
Cam and Sweets helped Lilly out of the water.
The final hurdle was swinging ropes across another basin of water. This time only Daisy and Booth made it across without falling into the water. But thankfully by the time they reached the finish the water had dried off. The parkours ended at a beautiful lake. A lot of contestants ran into the water to feel a little cleaner from the muddiness they had crossed for the past hour and a half. Caroline had held true to her word, as she was dispensing drinks and quick snacks for the team. Soon everyone was nursing a drink and a snack provided by Caroline.
"We did it! Angela yelled, proud of the teamwork and happy to be done. "Group hug!" She added, pulling everyone in. Booth was the first to break away from the group hug.
Abernathy was rather positive about the team's accomplishment. "I think we might have ended up in the top ten."
Lilly smiled at his enthusiasm. "I don't know, there were stronger teams, but who cares? We all made it together and as Dr. Saroyan said, that is the most important thing."
Wendell ran at her like she was a football and he a jock. Making some sort of a warrior sound as he threw her over his shoulder. "I just checked, we made 4th place," Wendell said, feeling very celebratory. He had tried to keep it together all morning, but it was hard trying to keep away from his girlfriend, particularly since Lilly and he was spending so much time together.
"Put me down," Lilly giggled as she writhed.
"Nope," Wendell said as he continued running towards the water.
"Omg, no, Wendell!" Lilly shouted as she saw his desired destination.
When the water slowed him down too much to continue running, he dropped both of them into the water. Both laughed as they come up out of the water.
Lilly pushed against his chest as a punishment for throwing her into the water.
Wendell smiled. "Ah come on, you were dirty anyway."
"But not yet soaked", Lilly countered with a smile as she pushed her wet hair out of her face and retied her ponytail. "We finally were dry from running that last mile and a half."
Feeling this was the moment Wendell leaned in and kissed her.
Angela swatted Hodgins. "Look, in the water." Angela pointed toward the two soaked interns.
"Awhhhhhh," Hodgins said. "That is so cute and just about time." Immediately he looked at Booth, trying to see what the agent would think of Wendell and Lilly together. Booth just smiled at the sight.
"Whoooo! Go, Wendell! Angela chanted, making the rest of the team check what was going on, making them all cheer.
Startled Lilly and Wendell looked at each other before quickly looking at the team and bursting out in laughter.
"Sorry", Wendell said. "I guess that was unprofessional..."
Lilly looked back at him a smile appearing. "Yeah, probably, but I don't think I care. Cat's definitely out of the bag now."
Wendell nodded and pulled her closer into his chest as Lilly kissed him again.
