A/N: Hello there readers! I am glad to be posting another chapter, even though we are in the midst of this FF Bones Christmas season. So if you're up for reading a non-December-y chapter, please continue on reading XD.
Thank you Kareneb for reviewing the previous chapter. As always, it is dearly appreciated.
"I know how much you used to love our movie nights." Booth started off on his question for Bones as he put away the now cleaned and towel-dried dishes. For years B&B had held the occasional movie night but since coming back from their work trips, they had never restarted them. Movie nights were the perfect reason to be together back then and were a perfect opportune to teach Brennan some pop culture. "I promised Parker we'd watch a movie that Lilly left for him from when she babysat him. You wanna watch it with us? I'll make some popcorn." Booth threw in to sweeten the deal.
"Do you think Parker will want me there?" Bones asked. She was always happy to hang out with Booth and Parker, but she knew quality father and son time involved simply being together without someone else there.
Booth smiled. "Of course, he has never said no to having you around, but if it makes you feel better, I'll specifically ask him about him. He's thrilled that we're in a relationship now."
"Thank you." Bones said. "Father and son time is very important and I don't want to impose on that, regardless of how much Parker likes me and I love spending time with him – and you." She pulled out two mugs to make tea for herself and a decaf-coffee for Booth.
"And we will have that on Saturday and right up until movie time." He quickly reassured her It never got old hearing how much Bones loved Parker. Sure, it was incredibly wonderful that Temperance now also felt about him like that, but as a father – it was heartwarming and important that the woman he was with got along well with his son. "He'll be happy to see you, I am sure. He always says you're the best. Plus, since we've been dating and he knows that he's been hoping to hang out with you."
"Really?" Bones asked, awed that Parker liked her so much and apparently thought so highly of her.
"Yeah, really." Feeling a bit cheeky he added. "There just is this thing about you that makes Booth men go nuts for you and we simply can't help but want to spend time with you." He smiled broadly and wondered what Bones' reaction would be.
Knowing the playful side of her partner and actually well accustomed to it, she ignored his goading. "So, what type of movie is it?"
Booth shrugged. "I don't know. It is animated and aimed at children. Parker picked it out though"
"Why does miss Johnson even have a kid's movie?" Bones asked a little weirded out.
Booth chuckled at Bones' expression. "You know her, she doesn't believe in growing up, she believes in being a professional."
She shrugged. "That is why it is so surprising." Bones handed Booth his coffee as she held her cup of tea and both made their way to the couch, all the while continuing their conversation.
"I don't know what to tell you, Bones." Booth shrugged to underline his point. "She used to be a nanny, so I suppose that helped to keep her inner child near the surface."
Bones chuckled. "What about your inner child resurfacing? What is your excuse for your inner child always popping up?"
Booth faked amazement. "What me? I am all adult and professional."
"Of course, you are. With reading your cartoons, you even take your bath with a rubber duck, which, by the way, is very unhygienic..." Temperance listed his more childlike qualities, counting along on her fingers.
"Yeah, yeah, you made your point," Booth said with a smile, capturing her counting hand and interrupting what surely would probably quickly turn into a lesson. "Catering to your inner child isn't a bad thing, Bones. It helps you to see things in a new light, as you've never seen it before. To help you be in awe, to be amazed, to have fun. To gain a new perspective and that can lead to new ideas."
Bones tilted her head as she gently wiggled her hand free from Booth's gentle grip. "That sounds a lot like the beginner's mindset that yoga teacher Angela drags me to."
"Male or female?" Booth asked. There was a time, not long ago, where he would have tried his hardest to keep his jealousy a secret, probably not as successful as he wanted it to be anyway, but now he felt entitled to be jealous of any dude that shot glances toward the woman he loved. Especially when his Bones was wearing tight sports clothes and bending in every direction.
Bones quirked up an eyebrow. "Why does it matter?" She blew on her tea.
"Because I am trying to determine if I should run a background check on him." Booth blankly told her.
Bones opened her mouth to say something but swallowed it. There was nothing she could say that would change his mind if the teacher was a man. Booth had always run his checks on all men that came close to her under the disguise of keeping her safe. Before they had started dating, she had hated his overprotective side and she would push back, defending her and her dates privacy fiercely. Now she felt that Booth might have some sort of right to ask questions like that and he had ever so boldly admitted his practice instead of denying intervening at all. "She's female." Bones said.
Booth squinted at her.
"What?" Bones asked, trying to suppress her want of squirming under his gaze.
"Why did you hesitate in answering me?"
Bones smiled, now understanding his pensive look. The tone of his voice had been innocent enough, but she knew him well enough to know what was actually going through his head. "You think I just lied to you." She stated, there wasn't even doubt in her voice. "I planned on playing with your ankles but I decided that wasn't kind or worth it. I know your jealous of all men who look at me but I also know you investigate them to keep me safe and I think I actually appreciate that now."
"Oh," Booth said, surprised at that turn of events. "Well... That is great." He felt a little less guilty about his overprotectiveness. "So, this weekend you'll come over to my place to watch that movie with me and Parker?"
Bones nodded. "I would love to."
"Hey Dr. Brennan," Lilly greeted the anthropologist, happy as ever.
"Hello, miss Johnson."
"How was movie night?"
Brennan looked surprised. "How did you know about that?"
Lilly smiled. "Booth let Parker send me a text to thank me for lending him the movie."
"Aha." As the realization dawned upon her. "Since we are on the subject of that movie now. Why do you own movies of this genre?"
"Because they are fun to watch." was the intern's simple answer.
"Hmm. I've never gotten the appeal." There was a quizzical look on Dr. Brennan's features.
"Movies in general or just animations for kids?"
Bones paused. "Well, both actually, but the children's genre especially."
"Alright." Lilly nodded. "They are happy. Carefree. Simple problems, even simpler solutions. You've once told me that during your childhood you found refuge in studying. As much as I enjoy learning, part of my escape was also reading and watching tv and film."
Bones nodded, taking in this piece of new information about the intern.
"The Smurfs were pretty big in Europe and one of my au pair kids was really into the tv series, which was really old apparently." Lilly continued. "So, when I saw this movie at the store, I just had to pick it up for nostalgia reasons. As for this movie, I saw the trailer on tv and it made me laugh. Was it any good? I haven't seen it yet."
"It was amusing, yes. I was surprised by that the minions, as they are called, used a lot of Spanish, so in a way, it was educational for Parker."
Lilly smiled at the forensic anthropologist's ability to find something teachable in almost every situation.
"The plot, however, was somewhat lacking."
Lilly smiled. "Well, you have to remember it is a children's movie."
Brennan nodded. "I suppose."
"Psst... Lilly!" Booth whispered as he beckoned her over to the side a little away from the forensic platform.
"What up Booth?" Lilly asked. "Why the secrecy and the poorly executed whisper?" She looked around herself to see if there was someone following her or something, but all she saw was an empty hallway.
He smiled. "I don't want Bones to hear us." He pointed to the forensic platform where Dr. Brennan was working on a set of remains.
Lilly raised an eyebrow. "Okay, this just got even weirder." Lilly thought that it was a good thing that Hodgins wasn't seeing this, because even to Lilly it felt suspicious and conspiracy-related.
Booth rolled his eyes. "You sometimes join Bones and Angela to that yoga class, right?"
"Well, not exactly. Angela sometimes invites me, but I've never been with Dr. Brennan as well. Why?"
"Are all classes taught by female teachers?"
"No," Lilly said. "Why the interest?" She repeated the question.
"Does Angela ever take you to a class with a male instructor?"
Lilly crossed her arms in front of chess, quickly growing tired of getting the suspect treatment. "You know, if you aren't going to answer my questions, I am not going to answer yours." She knew Booth was an incredible investigator and questioning people was somewhat of his specialty, but Lilly didn't feel like being on the receiving end of his query.
There was something incredibly stubborn in her posture. Booth stared at her, trying to give her his most impressive stare down stare.
Lilly kept looking back. A smile curved up her lips after at least thirty seconds of silence between them. "We're going to stand here all day", Lilly said softly but singsongy, not at all intimidated by the perp stare. She hadn't done anything wrong and the way Lilly saw it: Booth wanted information from her so he should cave, not her.
"Okay, fine," Booth said, frustration evident in his voice. His only alternative was asking Angela and she and he still weren't on speaking terms. Besides, asking her would invite more probing questions into his personal life with Bones, which was exactly what he didn't want Angela to do.
Internally Lilly cheered. One-zero for me.
"I don't know why." Booth sighed. "I keep telling myself it is because I want to make sure nothing ever happens to Bones, but if I am honest, I am probably just jealous and insecure."
That was a much larger confession from the agent than she had expected or had dared to hope for. Lilly nodded. "Knowing you, that is probably all true."
"Wow, thanks for the words of comfort," Booth said sarcastically.
A chuckle escaped from Lilly as she made hand gestures that said sorry. "Like you don't appreciate brutal honesty." There was a small pause before she gave him the answer he was looking for. "There is a class that a man and a woman teach together."
"Hmm," Booth said, wondering if Bones had lied to him.
"I am sure he's harmless though." Lilly tried to reassure Booth. When he didn't respond, Lilly decided to shot some questions his way. "I understand the protection and jealousy thing, but what are you insecure about? Because you and Dr. B... I am not sure I've ever seen a cuter couple or a steadier couple. You know, aside from Wendell and myself. Lilly cheekily added. I've been caught up on the history between the two of you and I don't think now that Dr. Brennan has chosen you, she'd do anything to jeopardize that."
Booth smiled at the conviction in her words. "You do know she once dated two men at the same time." He enjoyed the look of shock that appeared on the legal intern's face.
"No, I did not know that." Lilly was momentarily stunned. She wondered how that had come about while figuring out her next response. "But..." She paused for dramatic effect. "... Monogamy probably wasn't discussed between her and either of those men, right?"
"I guess not," Booth said, remembering Bones' explanation for dating the undersea welder and the gay suited botanist.
"Well. I am sure she knows you value monogamy and she values you, so, therefore, I don't think Dr. B. would risk that. It's like a general term and condition for dating you and you know how she values honoring her contracts."
Booth snorted. "Terms and conditions?"
"Hmm-hmm," Lilly said. "You always say you want things in plain English. I could have said pacta sunt servanda."
"Squint." Booth joked.
"Hell yeah, I didn't get a degree in civil law for nothing. She said with a grin. So do you agree or do you need more words of comfort?" Lilly asked.
"No, I am okay, thanks for easing my worries, I guess."
Lilly smiled. "Have a little faith. Jealousy is normal as is feeling a little out of debt, but don't let it ruin your relationship with Dr. B."
Booth nodded. "Right, I should get back to work."
"Alright." As Booth walked away Lilly fake whispered him to come back dramatically.
Booth turned around. "What?"
"If anyone has to worry about that yoga instructor going after their partner it is Dr. B." Lilly grinned as Booth's eyes narrowed at her as he realized what she was saying.
"So, all this was just to make fun of me?"
Lilly shrugged, her grin still present and slightly contradiction her next words. "Actually no, it was meant as an exercise in trusting Dr. B and to help your personal growth to get past your jealousy and insecurity. You're welcome." Lilly said with a cocky smile.
Booth shook his head in disbelief, hiding his grin. She was incorrigible but that was also what made her a good friend and an asset to the team. He was just glad to have information that he shouldn't worry about any of it.
