Peter and Chara were still laughing from the dog incident as they walked through Waterfall. It was raining again, so Peter grabbed another umbrella and trudged through the swampy halls. Chara attempted jumping in the puddles, despite not effecting them in any way. Peter helped her out, and soon both were having quite a blast. Peter was in the middle of the chorus of "Singing in the Rain" again when they bumped into Monster Kid, huddled in a corner.
"Hey man, you alright?" Peter asked. "You looked drenched, wanna share-"
"Yo, and umbrella? Awesome, thanks dude!" Monster Kid hopped up and down excitedly. "Looking for Undyne is wet work."
"Is that what he's doing?" Chara asked, concerned. "Is she around here?"
Peter asked MK that.
"Yo, that is totally right." MK replied. "She's tracking someone! It's so cool! She's sooooo cool."
"Yeah, that's... one word for her." Peter said hesitantly.
"She beats up bad guys," MK continued, eyes alight with excitement. "And she NEVER loses! If I was a human, I'd have nightmares knowing she was gonna beat me up!"
"Heh..." Peter wasn't worried per say, but the idea of Undyne being a relentless killer was reminding him of his last conversation with Flowey.
"So, one time," MK continued, "We had a school project where we had to take care of a flower."
"Worrisome for multiple reasons." Chara noted.
"The king - we had to call him "Mr. Dreemurr" - volunteered to donate his own flowers." MK drooped slightly. "He ended up coming to school and teaching the class about responsibility and stuff. Real boring. BUT! That got me thinking..." His eyes lit up again. "YO! How COOL would it be if UNDYNE came to school!? She could beat up ALL the teachers!"
Peter shrugged. "Well, the king probably had some wise things to say. I have a lot of dealing with responsibility. Besides, do you really think a Captain of the Royal Guard would beat up teachers? She's got responsibilities too."
MK thought for a moment. "Yeah. She's way too cool to beat up an innocent person. Man, you know so much about Undyne!"
"Is this what I'm like?" Peter asked Chara.
"Talkative and more witty in your own head?" She nodded.
"Ouch.." Peter chuckled. "You know, you're a pretty cool dude yourself." He said to MK.
"Really?"
"Yeah. You're plenty brave..." Peter thought for a moment. "You remind me of me a bit, actually."
"Dude, no way." MK laughed. "Yo, you're pretty cool yourself. Unlike that human Undyne is tracking!"
Peter decided that, for once, talking would be unhelpful. Besides, there was a brilliant view of a faraway castle to be seen. The two stopped and looked for a bit, then continued on, Chara floating behind.
They came to a large stony outcropping, taller than either of them. MK turned around.
"Yo, this ledge is way too steep." He thought for a moment. "Yo, you wanna see Undyne, right...?"
"Kinda?" Peter replied.
"Climb on my shoulders, and I'll find another way around!"
"No need, kid." Peter winked and lightly flipped onto the ledge. "I can pull you up if you want!"
"Dude, that's sick!" MK replied. "But looks dizzying. I'll find another way through, no sweat!" He ran off, falling onto his head and picking himself up again as per usual.
"The amount of hero worship Undyne gets is staggering." Chara noted. "A bit ridiculous, actually."
"Well, she is a hero in the eyes of monsters." Peter replied. "I just happen to be a human."
He stepped onto a bridge, and had only gone five steps before his spider-sense went off. Glowing holes surrounded him, which soon erupted into spears. Looking down, he spotted Undyne readying another volley.
"RUN!" Chara shouted.
"Noted!"
Peter relied on his spider-sense to guide him around Undyne's spears. Dodge and weave. Hold still! Leap! And repeat. And run. This went on while Peter attempted to navigate around the bridge, until finally he came to the end. Breathing heavily, he listened for any sounds.
"I think it's safe." Chara whispered, wide eyed.
He crept back, only to be startled by Undyne advancing on him. She stepped forward slowly like a hulking juggernaut. Just as he was having flashbacks to Thanos, she threw three spears, splitting off his edge of the bridge, causing it to fall. He tried to thwip a web rope to the cavern ceiling, but it was too high up, so the line failed. His last thoughts were that didn't pack his parachute, before it occurred to him that it wouldn't help anyways...
Then everything went black.
"It sounds like it came from over here..."
A soft, high pitched voice rang not in his ears, but in his mind. Curious.
"Oh! You've fallen down, haven't you..."
He guessed he must have. Everything was still dark, and Peter couldn't feel anything.
"Are you okay?"
Probably not. Feeling was returning, and it felt like his body was on fire.
"Here, get up..."
"Just two more minutes..." Peter mumbled.
"Chara, huh? That's a nice name. My name is..."
Peter sat bolt upright. "WHAT HUH!?"
Blinking, he felt his body repairing itself. It hurt. He lay on a patch of golden flowers in what looked... and smelled like a dump.
"Chara, who was that?" He asked.
"I shared a memory with you." She spoke, surprised. "You had fallen, and I wanted to get you up, so I thought of what happened to me when I first fell down... I guess it passed along."
"Huh."
Peter stood up, and stepped into the murky, knee deep water. "Gosh, I've gotta get this suit to the cleaners. I wonder if Woshua's around."
"Very funny." Chara gained a devious grin. "You know... seeing all this garbage must absolutely FILL you with determination."
"Oh come on." Peter chuckled. "This place is gross."
Desktop computers, coolers, and anime DVD cases littered the whole area, all within the murky water. Near the exit, a single training dummy sat. Peter looked at it a bit, as memories of the happy times he shared with Toriel filtered in. Chara must have felt it too. Shrugging, Peter moved on. Suddenly, the dummy sprang to life, and flew in front of Peter.
"Hahahah.. Too intimidated to fight me, huh!?" It asked, sneering.
"What." Peter blinked in confusion. "You're a training dummy, how!?"
"I am a ghost that lives inside a dummy." It spat. "My cousin used to live inside a dummy too, until... YOU!"
Peter blinked again. "What did I do!?"
"You..." The dummy paused, thinking confusedly for a moment. "Uh, you... Shucks, you were really boring! They got annoyed and flew away like and self-respecting spectre."
"But Napstablook flew away." Chara noted. "I don't think he's self-respecting."
"Chara, not necessary." Peter hissed.
"Yeah, CHARA, not necessary!" The mad dummy hissed. "Napstablook is a kind spirit, who does not deserve that! In fact... Just for that, I'm gonna beat you BOTH black and blue!"
"Oh right, ghosts can see me." Chara sighed. "That was a bad move."
"You think?" Peter asked as a FIGHT began. "Look, can't we work this out?"
"Foolish, foolish, FOOLISH!" The dummy spat.
It summoned miniature dummies, all of whom spat stuffing at Peter. He was used to monster attacks, so he dodged from the way. Some of them hit Mad Dummy, who immediately took on a beat up look.
"OWWWW, you DUMMIES!" It yelled. "Watch where you're aiming your magic attacks!"
"Magic... That's it!" Chara snapped her fingers. "You can't hurt ghosts... But you can use it's own attacks to damage the body!"
"WHAT!?" The mad dummy looked sheepish. "Don't listen to her! Forget I said ANYTHING, you hear!"
Peter shrugged. "Sounds like a plan, Char!"
He continued dodging the attacks while Mad Dummy spouted off about it's grandiose plans and attacked, all while glaring at him. Whenever he could, Peter led the attacks right into it. This caused the dummy body to begin to tear apart. Finally, the dummy seemed to have passed it's limit.
"HEY GUYS!" It shouted at it's bullets. They popped up sheepishly. "Dummies, Dummies! DUMMIES! Remember how I said NOT to shoot at me? Well... FAILURES! YOU'RE ALL FIRED, AN BEING REPLACED!"
"Uh oh." Chara noted.
The dummies sheepishly slunk away. Mad Dummy began to laugh maniacally.
"Now you'll see my true power: Relying on people that aren't garbage!"
You literally live in a dump." Peter quipped. "Does this mead you can't rely on your body."
Mad Dummy glared at him. "You'll regret that. When I bring out my DUMMY BOTS!"
He began laughing as robot dummies launched missiles at Peter. They were tracking missiles, but if aimed right could still hit the dummy. Thus, Peter got in the same rythm of dodging them as he had before, while Mad Dummy got even angrier. Finally, he snapped.
"N... no way." It gazed on as Peter once again dodged all the missiles. "These guys are even WORSE than the other guys! Well... who cares. Who care! WHO CARES!" It laughed maniacally. "I DON'T NEED FRIENDS!" It summoned a large knife. "I'VE GOT KNIVES!"
"Good taste, nice detailing." Chara nodded. "Altogether an excellent attack."
"Chara!"
"What! I like knives."
Mad Dummy threw the knife, which Peter dodged with ease. It then looked sheepish.
"I'm... Out of knives." It spoke. "BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER! YOU CAN'T HURT ME AND I CAN'T HURT YOU! YOU'LL BE STUCK FIGHTING ME... Forever. Forever! FOREVER!" As it laughed maniacally, tear-shaped pellets fell from the sky and caused damage.
"Wait. Acid rain?" The dummy groaned. "Oh forget it. I'm outta here!" It floated away, and was replaced by-
"NAPSTABLOOK!" Peter cheered.
"Oh man, you're a lifesaver." Chara said. "I'll never insult you again."
Napstablook sighed. "i'd probably deserve it anyways. oh... sorry. i interrupted you, didn't i? as soon as i came over, your friend immediately left..."
"Oh, that was for the best, believe me." Peter said.
"but you looked like you were having fun..." Napstablook sighed. "i just wanted to say hi..."
The FIGHT ended as Napstablook looked on sadly. "well... i'm going to head home now... oh, um... feel free to come with. if you want..."
"Sure!" Peter replied, following after the ghost.
"my house is up here... in case you want to see." Napstablook considered for a moment. "or in case... you don't."
Peter continued following, until he came to a cozy red house. Inside, funky music was playing as Napstablook hung out.
"oh... you really came..." Napstablook looked about. "sorry, i... wasn't expecting that. it's not much, but make yourself at home."
Peter looked about, noting the few pieces of decor Napstablook had. They suggested Peter try some music. so he chose a CD labeled "Spooktunes." Napstablook stated it was a classic, so Peter kept exploring. His stomach rumbled, and Napstablook looked up.
"oh... are you hungry?" They asked. "i can get you something to eat."
"If it's not too much trouble!" Peter replied.
Napstablook floated over and grabbed a sandwich from the fridge. It was see-through. "this is a ghost sandwich... do you want to try it?"
Peter shrugged. "Sure, why not. It's been a bit since I've eaten."
Napstablook passed it to him, but it phased through his fingers. Chara caught it, however.
"It's been literal decades since I've eaten, so-" Chara devoured it hungrily.
"...oh, i'm glad your friend liked it." Napstablook said. "you know, after a great meal, i like to lie on the ground and feel like garbage... it's a family tradition... do you want... to join me?"
Peter and Chara looked at each other.
"When in Rome." Peter said.
"Speak for yourself, I'll feel right at home." She replied. Peter shot her a look, but they both got down on the floor with Napstablook.
"here we go..." Napstablook intoned. "you'll lie down as long as you don't move. so... only move around when you want to get up, i guess."
Peter nodded, and just lay there with the other two. It was strangely peaceful. But as time passed, the music faded away, and the house did too. Peter felt oddly calm just lying there, on the floor, thinking.
Of course, he couldn't stay there. So after a bit, he got up and thanked Napstablook for their hospitality.
"thank you..." Napstablook replied. "it was nice to do that with someone else. I haven't done that in... years.
