"It was really nice to hang out with Napstablook." Peter noted as he walked along the path.
"That's true." Chara replied. "Felling like garbage has never been so fun, that's for sure."
Peter wanted to say something, but felt that it wasn't the time.
The two trekked over waterfalls and swamp. A shopkeeper gave them directions, along with a few stories, and they went onward. In a room nearby, the path was lit by crystals. Chara explained that the nearby mushrooms would light the way, so Peter lit them up. Suddenly, a strange creature appeared: A dog... with wings? And hair? It was vibrating so hard, its face looked ready to fly off... well, its face.
"What?" Peter asked.
"Oh, that's a Temmie." Chara groaned. "These things are... well, something."
"AwwAwa so cute!" Temmie attempted to pet Peter, but her hand/paw/thing was a magic bullet, so Peter dodged it.
"Very annoying." Chara stated as Peter leapt about her. "Not to mention they're allergic to you."
"Oh." Peter paused for a moment. "Hi Temmie! You do know you're allergic to me, right?"
"yayayaYaya!" Temmie replied, this time walking over him with very long legs. They looked confused. "TEMMIE forgot tEMMIE's other attack..."
"Does that mean I can go?"
"YYAYAyaya!" Temmie replied. "Mak sher tu go tu tEMMIE tem village! bOI! now!" Temmie floated away, leaving a confused Peter and exasperated Chara.
"Well, THAT was idiotic." Chara repeated.
Peter shrugged. "Remember, in all technicality, I am the intruder here."
Chara grumbled, but didn't press further.
Up ahead, the crystals needed to be rel-lit by lanterns occasionally. Peter found the task peaceful, especially compared to how stressful it had been with the threat of Undyne looming over him. However, as he reached the end of the room and ran out of lanterns, the darkness began to deepen. At then end of the hall sat a single echo flower.
"Behind you." It whispered as Peter's spider-sense went haywire. He spun around, ready for the looming mass of armor steadily stomping towards him.
"Seven." Undyne growled, her voice deepened by the face-plate of her armor. "Seven human souls. With the power of seven human souls, our king... King Asgore Dreemurr... will become a god."
"Oh no." Peter and Chara whispered in unison. "Asgore is the king?"
"Still?"
Peter was surprised for a moment, then realized Chara had probably been around when he had started ruling. "Can't you pick a soul other than mine?"
Undyne chuckled. "You're kidding. Real funny. With that power, Asgore can finally shatter the barrier. He will finally take the surface back from your kind... And give them back the suffering and pain that we have endured... Understand... Human?"
Peter nodded. "So King Dreemurr needs my soul to complete the full set. And your plan is to make sure he gets it?"
Undyne nodded. "So you do understand. Understand this, then. I don't have to kill you to gain your soul. This is your only chance at redemption. Give up your soul... Or I'll tear it from your lifeless corpse, you miserable human."
"Redemption?" Peter raised an eyebrow. "C'mon, blood knight, you can not hold one member of a people group responsible for a subsection of that group with terrible viewpoints."
Undyne growled. "Real funny guy, you are. Now surrender your soul!"
"Not to you." Peter straightened. "Not like this. C'mon, let's talk things out!"
"Talk? The time for talk is over." Undyne summoned a spear and pointed it straight at him. "Now is the time for ACTION!"
She charged at him, and a FIGHT started to begin, when suddenly Monster Kid leapt out of some nearby bushes right into the path of her charge.
"Undyne!" He declared as Undyne skidded to a halt inches away from his face. "I'll help you fight-" He noticed who was standing next to him. "YO!" He exclaimed. "You did it! Undyne is RIGHT in front of you!"
"No kidding." Chara quipped.
"You've got front row seats to her... fight..." It occurred to him that there was no one else around. "... wait. Who's she fighting? "
Undyne groaned, grabbed his cheek, and dragged him away, lecturing him as he protested. Peter, figuring MK would be ok, took the opportunity to slip off.
"That was close." Chara noted once they were a few rooms away.
"Yeah." Peter replied. "I'm not sure why, but the idea of fighting Undyne fills me with no small amount of dread."
Chara considered this. She looked about to say something, when a now-familiar voice rang out.
"Yo!"
MK ran up, then slowed to a crawl. "Yo, I know I'm not supposed to be here, but..." He shuffled his feet. "I wanna ask you something."
"Here it comes." Chara sighed.
"Sure, what?" Peter asked.
"... Man, I've never had to ask anyone this before." He replied, chuckling nervously. "Umm... Yo... You're a human right?" He gave another nervous chuckle.
Peter felt his shoulders sag slightly. As annoying as this kid could be in large doses, it had been nice to have a friend. "Yeah, kid. I'm a human."
"Man! I knew it!" MK replied.
"No you didn't."
"... well, I know it now, I mean..." He shuffled his feet again. "Undyne told me, um, "stay away from that human." So, like, umm..." He straightened. "I guess that makes us enemies or something. But I kinda stink at that, so, Yo, say something mean so I can hate you? Please?"
Chara opened her mouth to give suggestions, but Peter raised a hand to silence her.
"I'd rather we not been enemies, if I can help it. Can't we be friends?"
"Yo, what?" MK looked confused, then annoyed. "You telling me I have to do it? Well, then, here goes nothing..." He cleared his throat. "Yo, I... I hate your guts."
Chara clapped sarcastically. Peter ignored her.
"Man... I suck at this." MK chuckled. "I'm... I'm gonna go home now."
Peter went to protest, but as MK broke into a run, he tripped and found himself hanging from the bridge by his teeth.
"Yo, w-w-wait! Help! I tripped!" He freaked out as Undyne appeared on the bridge.
"Peter, run!" Chara yelled.
For a few seconds, Peter considered it. Then, he saw MK as Ned or MJ, and realized that he couldn't do that. Sprinting to the edge. he helped the monster up and prepared to face Undyne.
"Y... y... yo... dude..." MK struggled to his feet, and walked in front of Peter. "If... if y-you want to hurt my friend... You're gonna have to go through me, first."
Undyne paused, then backed away, slowly.
"She's gone..." MK noted. "Yo, you really saved my skin."
"And I got a feeling you saved mine." Peter said with a smile.
"Yeah!" MK replied. "Guess being enemies was just a nice thought. We'll just have to be friends instead."
Peter nodded. "Agreed. I think I'd like that. You should probably get home though."
MK's eyes widened. "Yo, you're right! Man, I bet my parents are worried sick about me! Later dude!" He ran off, carefully balancing this time.
"Why did you do that!?" Chara yelled. "Undyne could have KILLED you!"
"I needed to do the right thing-"
"Yeah? Well it worked out this time. But you may find that doing the right thing all the time will get. You. Killed."
Peter frowned. "You sound like Flowey."
"WELL MAYBE HE'S RIGHT!" Chara yelled. "What happens to me when you die!? I can't let-"
She left the last part unfinished. They walked in silence until Peter felt his spider-sense went off. Looking up, he saw Undyne standing on the edge of a nearby cliff. Her body language said she was ticked.
"Seven." She growled. "Seven human souls, and King Asgore will become a god." She turned. "Six. That's how many we have collected thus far. Understand?"
Peter nodded hesitantly.
"Through your seventh and final soul, this world will be transformed." She stared at the glowing light of nearby lava pools. "First, however, as is customary for those who make it this far... I shall tell you the tragic tale of our people."
She paused, as though trying to remember something. "You know what? FORGET IT! WHY SHOULD I TELL IT TO YOU... WHEN YOU'RE ABOUT TO DIE!?"
She screamed in anger, in rage, in frustration, tearing her helmet from her head. Blue scales reflected off the water, one good eye glinted harshly, long red hair flipped to the side in a tall ponytail, and sharp teeth bared in anger as she yelled, "YOU! You're standing in the way of everybody's hopes and dreams!"
"But I want to-"
"SILENCE!" She roared. "Alphy's history books may have made me think humans were cool... with their giant robots and flowery swordwomen."
Peter tilted his head. "You mean Mr. Stark or Mr. Rhodes? And is Ms. Gamora the swordlady? I didn't really meet her but-"
"BUT YOU?" She interrupted him. "You're just a coward! Hiding behind that kid so you could run away from me again! AND! AND!"
She paused. "Your goody-two shoes shtick makes me sick. So I will end you human! Step forward, and prepare to engage in battle with a TRUE HERO!"
"Chara..." Peter began to step forward. "I could use a little determination right now."
"Thought you'd never ask." She cleared her throat. "The wind is howling. Despite all odds, you're filled with determination."
Peter grit his teeth, and stepped forward.
"That's it, then...!" Undyne yelled. "No more running away! HERE I COMEE!"
And then Peter saw her spear slamming towards him, a look of pure hatred in her eyes and it grew closer and closer.
