Better Days
Chapter 307
Author's Note: So, the part where Rick talks to Deanna in the next episode may show up in this 'episode', but we'll see how it goes. Things change depending on how my people talk to me. I always wondered why Maggie didn't watch Gabriel's tape when she heard him talk to Deanna. I decided that since Ronnie did talk to him, she watched the tape and having words with Deanna before Gabriel comes to her. Well, let's continue shall we? Please review.
Ronnie and Maggie's POV:
Ronnie stood up after watching Gabriel's tape and shook her head and went to Deanna's office and knocked on her door.
"Come in," Deanna called out.
Ronnie came in and walked over to the table where Deanna and Maggie was sitting. "Good morning Maggie," she greeted.
"Morning," Maggie responded back.
"What can I help you with Ronnie?" Deanna asked.
Ronnie sat down. "I watched Gabriel's tape," she simply said.
Deanna glanced at Maggie then turned her attention to her. "Why would you watch someone from your groups tape? You've all said that you are family," she pointed out.
"Every family has people that are the outcast, the black sheep, the liar, the person who will say anything to betray others for there own good," Ronnie answered.
"What did you find on his tape?" Maggie questioned.
"He didn't tell the truth, of what he did," Ronnie answered as Maggie nodded.
"He's a priest," Deanna pointed out.
"He's just a man who wears a collar," Maggie told her.
"And hides out behind the collar," Ronnie told her. "He has blood on his hands, just as if he raised a knife and killed people himself. We all saw how he silently judges us, how he thinks he's better then us, considers us murderers. You talk about transparency, and the one person that you think would tell you the truth, is hiding behind the collar. He may be the most dangerous person among us."
Deanna looked between the two brown haired women. "What did he do?"
"He let his congregation die. He locked the church doors, listened to his congregation beg to be let in at the start of this. He was to much of a coward to open the door, to save them," Ronnie told her.
"Maggie is this true?" Deanna questioned.
"He told us himself. He almost opened the door to the people at Terminus and let Jewel, the kids, the babies, and poor Bob, die to save himself. He believed that they'd let him go if he opened the door. They would have killed him too," Maggie answered.
"It doesn't matter what he did in the past, we've all done things during all of this that we wouldn't have done otherwise. But for him not to tell you, it's wrong. We all told you what we did because we want to make this work, we need this to work. But one person not telling you everything, that is the dangerous part," Ronnie told her as she stood up. "I thought you had the right to know," she told her. "I'll see you later Maggie," she told the other woman as she walked out.
David and Abraham's POV:
David looked up at Francine who was standing guard over the group. "Hey you want a break, let me know alright?"
"I'm alright, you've got more muscle then I do anyway," Francine responded.
"Yeah but you shouldn't be standing up there all day. You need to stay alert to do your job correctly. So in about an hour, I'll come up, you come down. Don't even try to argue either, this is something that you all should have been doing anyway," David told him.
Abraham looked at the younger man. "If you're done your flirting, get your ass over here and help me," he told David.
David rolled his eyes as he went over and grabbed the other end of the steel they were carrying to the truck. "I wasn't flirting, Abraham. I was actually trying to keep everyone safe," he pointed out.
"Yeah yeah, sure, keep telling yourself that," Abraham told him as he looked at Bruce. "Does Tobin really think this'll take four weeks?"
"That's what he said. The first time they expanded the wall, it took 'em twice as that," Bruce answered.
"A job like this would normally take two weeks, tops," Joey pointed out.
Abraham looked around. "Yeah," he commented, not pointing out who he was responding too.
David looked at the older man. "You've got an idea?"
"Doesn't matter, I'm not in charge," Abraham told him.
"You guys OK? I've got to send a fax to Cleveland," Bruce asked them.
Abraham nodded as David looked at him. "Yeah, we got it," he answered.
Abraham took a slow look around, watching everyone work, taking in the quiet. He grabbed the back of the truck, breathing in and out as David put a hand on his shoulder and nodded at him. The quiet was interrupted by a gun shot and both David and Abraham grabbed there weapons as someone called "Roamers." Both of them ran up to the group as they were shooting.
David noticed that him and Abraham were the only ones hitting the walkers' in the head. "Bullet to the brain! Calm breaths, aim for the head. You're wasting bullets any other way!" David yelled at them.
Tobin tried to do what David told them, but continued missing the heads and one of the bullets hit one of the bulldozers parts, making it come down, and dump Francine on the ground.
David took aim at the walkers' coming at Francine, blowing there heads right off.
Tobin looked around. "Everybody, back till we're safe in the truck!" he instructed.
Abraham ran forward and looked back at Tobin. "What about Francine?"
David looked at Tobin. "You're just going to leave her?" he questioned as he joined Abraham. "I've got your back."
"Damn it!" Abraham yelled.
"Abraham! David!" Tobin called after them.
Abraham ran forward as David took out the walkers' that was in following Abraham. He turned and took out two walkers' with the but end of his rifle as they were to close to fire at them.
Abraham grabbed Francine and pulled her up to the truck. "Up and in, you first," he told her. "Now this is more like it! It was getting a little boring out here, don't you think David?"
David looked at him. "I agree, but you know, a slow build up would have been nice," he answered as he climbed on to the truck making his way to the roof. "Would have given us a chance to catch our breaths!" he said as he stood on the roof taking out walkers'.
"Mother Dick!" Abraham exclaimed with a smile on his face as he rolled under the truck.
"Only Abraham would get this excited having this many walkers' after us!" David exclaimed as he fired at more walkers.
"Abraham!" Francine called as Abraham rolled from under the truck.
"Heads up!" Abraham yelled as he threw his rifle up to Francine. "You take out the ass end, David you take out the stragglers in the back, and I've got the uglies in front," he yelled out as he grabbed a weapon. "That's it, single file. There you go, come on, don't be shy," he yelled as he took off the heads of the walkers'.
"Clear!" David yelled.
"Clear here," Francine said.
Abraham nodded. "Now that's what I call team work," he said as opened the door to the truck to help Francine down.
"Not bad Francine," David told her as he climbed down the truck.
"Thank you both," Francine told both of them as Abraham started to take off in front of them. "What's he doing?"
David sighed. "He's a typical ginger, he loses his temper easily. You don't leave someone behind to get eaten alive. It's not right," he simply said as he walked up behind Abraham.
Abraham pushed Tobin into the car door. "That's how it works with you? You leave people behind to die?"
Tobin straightened up. "We have a system, them Francine."
Francine came out of no where and hit him in the jaw. "Asshole," she hissed as she hit him.
"I think she's telling you that your system sucks," David told Tobin.
Bruce stepped forward. "Hey all that noise is bound to bring more. I say we call it and start fresh in the morning, alright?"
"Screw that," Abraham answered. "Francine you good?"
"Got at least three hours of day light left," she answered.
David nodded at Abraham. "It'll take less than four weeks if we keep working until last possible light."
Abraham nodded. "Alright, I want two lookouts, one in the bucket and on the trucks. Should give us more warning if more are coming after the bash and pop. David, you're good at long distance shooting, I want you on the bucket."
David nodded. "Got it. Francine and Tommy were the ones who were hitting most of the targets in the head. Tobin shoots well, but he lets his emotions take over and his shots go off target. Bruce stepped up when it was time. Anyone good with hand to hand besides Abraham and me?" he asked as he looked around, no one raised there hands.
"Then we're going to need to ask Deanna for one of our people to be out here. Jes would be good, she is a good shot and a sniper, plus hand to hand. Summer would be good as watch out, as well as Joey," Abraham responded. "Now pull the cobwebs out of your ass and move, we've got a wall to build," he instructed as he went to move.
David went and got bullets out of the truck to refill his weapon. He looked up at Tobin as he came up to him. "If you're going to tell me that Abraham isn't in charge, and shouldn't be making those decisions, don't waste your breath."
"I wasn't going to say that. How did you two know you weren't going to die out there saving Francine?"
David looked at him. "We didn't," he simply answered.
"You weren't afraid?" Tobin questioned.
David laughed. "Did you see Abraham? Did he look afraid? No he thrives on shit like this. As for me? There's no time to be afraid when you're trying to save someone. Francine is part of your team, and you as the person in charge had a responsibility to save her. Hell, Rick went back to Atlanta with some of the group to save Beth from crazy people in a hospital. They didn't hesitate to go into that situation to save a family member. Being out there is like following someone to the depths of hell. You've got to be able to know they have there back. If this place fell tomorrow and Rick asked me who I thought could be trusted out there, with his family, your name wouldn't be any where near my thoughts. You shouldn't be leading a herd of walkers' let alone a group of people. I'm taking my orders from Abraham, at least I don't have to worry about being left behind. That's a real bad sign of poor leadership," he told him as he walked off leaving Tobin behind with David's voice in his head.
