"Peter... Peter... This is all simply a bad dream... You can wake up now..."
Toriel's voice floated through the blackness. Peter fought to find it, struggled to wake up.
"PETER, PLEASE WAKE UP! I'LL MAKE YOU SPAGHETTI!"
"C'mon punk, you can't stay down like that!"
Trombone noise
"SANS! THAT'S NOT HELPING!"
"well clearly it did." Sans quipped as Peter sat bolt upright.
"You couldn't have given me five more minutes?" Peter grinned painfully. Groaning, he pulled off the half of the mask still attached to his face, cracked eye lens' staring. He looked to Chara to see if she was alright. Transparent as ever, she gave him a thumbs up.
The assembled monster breathed a sigh of relief.
"Thank goodness you're alright, I was so worried." Toriel said.
"I WAS... NOT!" Papyrus stated, sniffing.
"whoah, paps, are you crying?" Sans asked.
"NO! I JUST CAUGHT SOMETHING IN MY EYE!"
"what did you catch?"
"TEARS!"
Peter and Chara laughed. It felt good to release the tension of the battle past.
Asgore coughed slightly. "After we all woke up, I found that the Barrier was broken. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but... We can leave now."
Peter turned to the exit, now unsealed. Chara floated nearby, and gave a nod. Looking over all of his friends, they seemed expectant and happy. and ready for whatever was to come next.
He smiled. "Come on guys, let's go outside."
...
The sun blazed out from the sky. Dawn was breaking, bathing the sky in ember light, and casting it's rays over the green of the grass that seemed to stretch for miles. A city sparkled in the distance, and clouds rolled lazily accross the sky.
Peter breathed in the crisp morning air. He made a note to never take things like fresh air or the sun for granted ever agian.
The monsters squinted in the light. It was far brighter than the Underground, that's for sure.
"Oh my..." Toriel gasped. She had seen above ground before, had been there when the monster were sealed away, but... had never expected to see it again.
"Isn't it beautiful, everyone?" Asgore said proudly, a smile breaking out across his face. It had been a millennia since he saw it last, but a sunrise was still as majestic as he remembered.
"Wow... it's e-even better than on TV." Alphys spoke, awestruck. She had never expected light this bright, or colors this vibrant. "WAY better! Better than I ever imagined!"
"Peter, you LIVE with this!?" Undyne exclaimed. "The sunlight is so nice... and the air is so fresh!"
"I've never been so glad of it." Peter smiled.
"I really feel alive!" Undyne shouted in reply.
Papyrus squinted at the light. "HEY SANS... WHAT'S THAT GIANT BALL?"
Sans grinned. "we call that "the sun," my friend."
"THAT'S THE SUN!? WOWIE!" Papyrus exclaimed. "I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M FINALLY MEETING THE SUN!"
Peter decided not to ask how Sans knew that when Papyrus didn't. The moment was just too exhilarating, too thrilling...
Asgore sighed in contentment. "I could stand here and watch this for hours..."
Toriel smiled. "Yes, it is beautiful, is it not? But we should really think about what comes next."
Peter nodded. "That's true. I doubt that humans are just gonna accept a whole race of powerful, magical creatures right out of the blue. We have enough problems with each other as it is."
Asgore nodded sadly. "I suppose that much has not changed. But now... I think I can see the beginning of a bright new future. I hope that we can start an era of peace between humans and monsters." He turned to Peter. "Peter... I have something to ask of you."
Peter shook his head. "Thank you very much, but I can pretty much guess what you would like to ask. Being Spider-man, while I can help so many... It means I can't take charge in something like this." He chuckled. "The press actually hates me enough. But, I think I know someone far more qualified. In fact, I know she'll be just right for the position."
"AND I SHALL HELP THIS HUMAN IN ANY WAY I CAN, AS OFFICIAL SPOKESPERSON AND MASCOT FOR THE MONSTERS!" Papyrus exclaimed cheerfully. "I'LL GO AND MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION!"
He ran down the mountain, yelling at the top of his lungs, "WHO WANTS A SELFIE WITH A SKELETON!"
Sans shrugged. "welp. someone's gotta keep him from getting into trouble. " He turned and gave Peter a wink. "see you around, kid."
He then walked back into the Underground, away from where Papyrus had run.
"Man, do I have to do EVERYTHING!" Undyne scoffed. "Hey Papyrus, WAIT UP!"
She ran after the skeleton, who appeared to be gesturing wildly to several tourists far down the mountain. Alphys groaned, and ran down after her.
"Whoops." Chuckled Asgore with a smile.
Toriel, Peter, Chara, and Asgore watched the sun rise for a few moments, before Toriel shot a look at Asgore.
"Uh... should I do something?" He asked.
She glared at him.
"Well, gotta go!" Asgore chuckled nervously, walking down the path and away.
"It seems that everyone is quite eager to set off." Toriel noted, a hint of melancholy in her voice.
"I suppose so..." Peter replied, thinking of all the things he had yet to do.
"Peter..." Toriel cleared her throat. "You came from this world, right...?"
Peter nodded. "That's true."
"So... you must have a place to return to, do you not?" Toriel asked with a tremor in her voice. "What will you do now?"
Peter turned to look at her. "I've gotta go home, Ms. Toriel. I mean, May must be worried sick, I completely flaked on MJ, Ned's gonna flip that I met a whole new race... And there's still my city to protect."
Toriel cleared her throat. "Ah... I see."
"But-" He added. "I'm sure that my Aunt May could always use a roommate. And we'd love to help you get adjusted to the human world. I'm sure she'd want to know your recipe for Butterscotch Cinnamon Pie."
Toriel smiled wide. "Thank you, Peter. As it turns out, I could use a place to stay."
She cleared her throat. "Now if you'll excuse me, I must make sure my ex-husband and those hooligans don't cause too much of a ruckus."
After she had left, Peter turned to Chara. Her eyes were closed, and she was just bathing in the light.
"I... I never thought I could ever experience this again." Chara smiled. "Even if I am a ghost."
Peter chuckled. "Yeah. But, like I said... I think I know someone who can seperate us. Let you move on. A promise is a promise, after all."
Chara laughed. "While I wont say no to getting out of your head... I wouldn't mind hanging around. We make a pretty good team, Spider-Man. I haven't been outside the Underground since I was ten, and I'm sure there's lots of things to do, and people to see."
Peter nodded. "Well, my last artificial assistant got fried by a bird themed scavenger, so I could use the help. It would be great to have you."
Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his mask and put it on. With a flick of his wrist, he launched a web, swinging himself to the bottom of the mountain... and in to the future.
