Chapter 6

The news broke out the day after the last heist. It was everywhere.

KID ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

This came first, videos of Kaito KID spread. A lot of people doubted his retirement and most fans were in denial. But it was true. Kaito KID has officially retired, accept it or not.

MILLENNIUM DIAMOND LOST

To the despair of the museum owner, the millennium diamond was said to be taken by KID. This rained down a lot of criticism on the KID task force. However, this was drowned out by the organization behind multiple jewel robberies.

SYNDICATE TAKEN DOWN

The crime syndicate covered not only jewel thefts, but also fraud and murder. It had taken the extra day to find their bases and capture everyone involved.

This only left one thing...

"BAKAITO! Where have you been?" Aoko said as the boy in question entered the room. His hospital room, might she add. "You can't go running around while you're still recovering. Honestly, it's like you want to die from exhaustion."

"Ahouko," Kaito said. "I just went to buy juice at the vending machine. And aren't you supposed to be in your room too?"

"Hmph. If I'm not wanted then I guess I'm leaving."

A hand circled around her wrist. "Aoko," Kaito said gravely. "I'll talk to you later, okay?"

Aoko was surprised at his seriousness. All she could do was nod.

She should be asleep. The bullet wounds still hurt and they had told her to remain at the hospital for an extra day, a sprain and blood loss were reasons enough.

Aoko tossed and turned, pulled the blanket up over her head, and stretched her legs. She still couldn't calm down. She sighed.

"Aoko."

Her scream would have woken up the entire hospital wing if she hadn't seen Kaito beside her bed, a finger on his lips.

"Shhh..."

She whispered furiously, "Kaito! What are you doing here? It's almost 3 in the morning!"

Kaito shrugged. "I told you I'd talk to you didn't I?"

"Yes! But why now?"

"It seemed right. You were awake anyway weren't you?"

Aoko sighed. "Okay. Let's talk. Where do you wanna start?"

"From the beginning."

Kaito proceeded to tell her about his father and the discovery of an evil organization bent on finding a jewel that grants immortality. He told her about Kuroba Toichi's death- no, murder- and how Kaitou KID disappeared for 8 years.

Then they came to present day. The revived Kaitou KID made a comeback, still stealing jewels; however, always returned them if it wasn't what he was looking for. KID performed heists with things always going exceedingly well. He always had fun with the task force! Even those times they almost captured him. But in the past months, the syndicate would make a move during one of his heists. And these were days Kaito prayed that no one gets hurt. The days he worried about Nakamori-keibu. Because if he didn't come home after a heist, Kaito would never have forgived himself.

Kaito told her that he was sorry. He was sorry he kept her dad from spending time with her. Sorry he made a fool out of the task force. Sorry for not being there when she needed him. Sorry for not telling her about this because- he swears to god- he just wanted to protect her...

"And then Blue Shadow arrived..." Kaito trailed off. He looked at Aoko and found her face marred by tears. Kaito lifted his hands to cradle her face.

"I didn't believe it at first. How could I? You didn't know karate.

"Then when I finally came to accept it... I thought it was too late. That I wouldn't be able to stop you. Of course, you promised me... But I knew... I should've been more careful..."

His hands were shaking as he held her face. He looked down, Poker Face cracking. "I could have lost you..."

"Kaito," Aoko spoke for the first time since he started explaining. She wrapped her arms around his neck, making him look up. "I'm sorry too."

He gave her a small smile and lightly bumped their foreheads together.

"We're a couple of idiots aren't we?"

They both laughed quietly, bathed in the moonlight shining through the window.

"I love you."

"HAH?" Came Keiko's disbelief. "You and Kaito are dating?!"

"Keiko! Keep it down or people will hear you!" Aoko pleaded.

"How did this happen? Was it during the heist? Did he save you from those evil men and that sparked your love?!" Keiko said with a fire within her.

Aoko sweatdropped. "It just...kind of happened..."

"Yo Aoko! Keiko!" Greeted Kaito.

"Is it true?" Keiko wasted no time and began her interrogation. "Are you and Aoko an item now?"

Keiko's questions sparked the interest of her classmates. "Kuroba and Nakamori are dating?" "Aren't they always at each other's throats?" "They're just childhood friends, right?"

Kaito looked at the forming crowd passively. "Yup. We're dating."

Aoko blushed.

There was silence...then a bunch of "Congratulations!" and claps on the back. There would be a few devastated boys and girls at the news, but that didn't really bother the new couple.

"Congratulations, Kuroba-kun," came Akako's sultry voice. "I guess everything worked out in your favor."

"Thanks!" Kaito replied easily.

"I guess Blue Shadow won't be making appearances any more...even Kaito KID," said Akako.

"Guess not," Kaito shrugged, then smiled. He sauntered up to his girlfriend and got really close to her face.

"What is it, Kaito? Do I have something on my fa-"

"So it's blue today!" Kaito's voice floated up from under her skirt. A handstand, a dummy head, and a perverted mind made this trick possible.

Aoko snapped the pencil she was holding. She was about to explode..."KAITO!"

She grabbed her mop and started swinging at the magician, chasing him til first period.

"And the game of hide and seek ends," Akako said, smiling out the window.

A/N: I've had this story incomplete for years and just decided to continue it slowly but surely since November. I know it's a bit rushed but I like how it turned out anyway :) Thanks for reading! Hopefully I'll continue my already posted stories *sweatdrops* Til then!
