"While we wait for breakfast, would you allow me to look at the scans of your ankle?" Martha asked Josh. "I know the Doctor is going to be treating you, but I will be assisting him, and, he's probably not going to be up to it for a couple of days. I expect that is going to be fine because it will the three or four days until the swelling goes down, but we will need to keep an eye on it, especially since you've been up and about so much this morning. I know that was because you were looking after the Doctor, but we'll need to check that didn't do any harm."
"I don't mind you looking at the scans."
"And, I'd like to take a new one just to monitor it if that is okay?"
"It's pretty sore at the moment, but I disconnected myself and the Doctor said if I didn't use the clicker then the drugs would drop down below the therapeutic level and I'd have to wait for them to come back up again."
"That's true," Martha confirmed. "Have you used everything in the clicker?"
"I've got two left."
"Then if it's sore then use it, and we'll check the cast and do another scan just to check it out."
"I didn't put any weight on it," Josh assured her. Martha got the TARDIS to display the scans the Doctor had taken of his ankle. It showed the injury both before he had attempted to straighten it and how it was when it was casted. The Doctor had done a really good job of reducing it, especially considering he'd done it on his own and with his back ripped open. Captain Jack came and had a look at the scan as well.
"You did a good job of that, didn't you, kid?" Jack commented. "What were you doing?"
"I caught it in a root or something while I was running."
"I'm going to get the TARDIS to do another scan now so keep still," Martha commented. The TARDIS did the scan and it showed there was heavy swelling around his ankle. It was also partially dislocated again having slipped out of line. Josh might not have put any weight on it, but he had been scooting around on the floor. If he'd rested with his leg angled on the cast then it would have been enough to shift it. Martha got the TARDIS to measure the blood flow through his ankle. It wasn't being compromised, but if he swelled much more they might have to think about reducing it again or replacing the cast.
"If the swelling gets any worse I'm going to have to change the cast," Martha informed Josh. "So, what we're going to do is elevate it a bit more and ice it. Hopefully that will keep it under control. Do you know what medications the Doctor has put you on?"
"He said it was a pain killer and an anti-inflammatory, but I don't know which ones. He did show me but I wasn't paying much attention. It was hurting."
"I'm not going to add anything else to the drug mix then. When he's awake we can ask him if there is anything else we can add to manage the inflammation. Anything that you need over the next couple of days we're going to sort out for you, okay? That will mean the Doctor can get the rest he's going to need. Just while he recover and then he can take over again."
"Do I have to go with you?"
"No, between Jack, Mickey, and I we can make sure someone is here with you both. I probably should have stayed last night just to keep an eye on you both, but one of us will definitely stay now until the Doctor is better. I'm going to just raise your leg up and Jack? You can come and tighten the sling," Martha suggested. As Martha lifted his leg up so it was almost poking out the top of the frame Josh tensed and fisted the sheets.
"Breathe kid," Jack commented as he tightened the lines on the sling to support his leg and then reached over and pressed the clicker for him. Martha got some ice packs and put them around the temporary cast.
"That is it now," Martha informed Josh firmly. "No more getting out of bed. I don't care if the Doctor starts spinning on his head. You stay in bed. Is that understood?" she asked him and he nodded. "Good."
"He's not going to do that is he?" Josh asked with a curious concern. Jack burst out laughing.
"You never know, kid, stranger things have happened."
