While Josh started to write out a scientific brief to deliver to UNIT Jack went and mopped the Doctor down a little. The wanted to keep his skin damp with the fans blowing on him. He was careful not to wake the time lord, but at the same time he wished he'd just wake up and let them know he was doing better. Of course he knew that time lords didn't age, they didn't get old and wither away, when the time came they regenerated, but as he regarded the Doctor, only a month or so into this regeneration he couldn't help but think he looked younger than he had when he'd met him again at the end of the Universe. Maybe time didn't age a time lord, but maybe the life of the last of them wearied him.

"Is something wrong?" Josh checked with the Captain when he'd just been standing regarding the time lord for a few minutes. "He's going to be okay now, right?"

"I hope so, kid," Jack commented and drew himself away from the Doctor's bedside.

"He will be," Josh stated. "He has to be doesn't he? He has to get better because he does all the things with you and with Martha that you both remember doing with him even if he's not done them yet, and, he meets my mum, so we know he has to get better."

"It doesn't really work that way," Jack offered. "I think he is going to recover from this, he seems to be doing better, so when he is better get him to give you a lesson on how he shouldn't nearly regenerate himself in 2026 when he should be back in 2006."

"But he travels all over the place doesn't he? In time and in space?"

"He does yet."

"So why does it matter whether he's in 2006 or in 2026?" Josh asked. "He could be in the dark ages or a thousand years in the future as well couldn't he?"

"He could," Jack confirmed. "But yesterday is still yesterday and tomorrow is still tomorrow and that applies to the Doctor just as much as it applies to anyone else. How is that template coming?" he checked with him.

"I think I'm almost done, do you want to check it's okay before I finish it?" Josh asked him. Jack nodded and had a quick look at it. "Is it good enough?"

"The content is…" Jack started as he began to read the template. "Actually it's excellent, but it's a brief not a diary entry or a story. You need to tweak the language a little. Instead of writing 'I think that this means that' you write something like 'initial interpretation of the data indicates that'."

"I can see why the Doctor doesn't like doing them," Josh commented.

"You know the Doctor is going to be able to show you and teach you some fantastic things, Josh. It's pretty clear that you're a smart kid, smarter than most. I am sure that both you and the Doctor will thrive on that. I'm going to say something that I want you to bear in mind and to think about. I'd be no good as being a mentor or a role model, and the Doctor will be better than that than I am, but other people, people like Martha and like Mickey are really important too. They might not be able to give you the same kind of fantastic lessons about time and the universe that the Doctor will be able to, but they will be able to show you how to be a normal kid and that is just as important. You've had a rough deal, losing your family and going into foster care, I don't know why you ran away, but I do know that sometimes people can get nervous around people who are really smart," Jack warned Josh.

"Why?"

"They just do," Jack offered. "All I'm saying is that whatever you do with the Doctor you need to make sure that you don't lose yourself in genetic creatures and all the incredible things there are out there. You need to stay grounded in humanity as well and to play board games and just watch the TV or chill and do nothing."

"Okay."

"The Doctor is going to want to look after you and to impress you and to give you the best time, but sometimes he can get a bit carried away, and as brilliant as he is, he can also be a royal pain in the butt," Jack informed Josh. "He can be arrogant, he thinks he is the one who is always right, he thinks he knows more than anyone else, and he usually does, and that is why he's really not going to be comfortable out of his time like this. He is usually the smartest and the most intelligent person in a room, but he's usually got people around him that keep him grounded. When he's off on his own he can lose himself a bit and sometimes he makes mistakes. When you're healed and you're better make sure you're not on your own, kid. Don't get lost in your own thoughts and make sure you stay grounded."

"You mean I should do a template and not run my mouth?" Josh asked him.

"Yeah, kid, that is what I mean," Jack confirmed realising that Josh had followed the gist of what he'd been trying to say even if he'd lost it himself. "And, you need to understand that the Doctor won't do a template and he will run his mouth, but he will get away with that because he's earned the right to do that over decades and decades, and, if he doesn't get away with it on the odd occasion it doesn't matter much because he can hop in the TARDIS and head off somewhere else. He doesn't have to deal with the aftermath. I reckon one day you may well have that kind of respect, but as well as knowing loads of brilliant stuff you also need to learn how to play the game, especially if you're a genius. There are a lot of people like Martha and Mickey who will also watch out for you and who care about you, so you need to let them."

"They only care about me because of my mum and because of UNIT."

"I don't think that's true," Jack informed him. "Maybe they have a heightened interest because of that, but you need to get to know them and let them get to know you as well. The TARDIS has access to all UNIT records. She only lets the Doctor see the ones he is allowed to know about, she's good like that. She knows everyone's personal time lines and adjusts access. The Doctor won't be able to see them, but, there are two that you might be able to look up. There will be two Lukes in the files both of them young geniuses and your mum had dealings with both of them when she was travelling with the Doctor. One of them helped to save the Universe with all of us and the other basically sold out the planet on his own because he thought he knew better than anyone else. Be a Luke Smith not a Luke Rattigan."

"I'm Joshua Temple-Noble. I'm not going to be anyone different," Josh informed Jack. The Captain nodded and smiled.

"Enjoy your time with the Doctor, kid, it is a rare opportunity for anyone and I am sure it will be brilliant, take everything in and learn as much as you can, but don't forget about templates, and, don't forget friendships work both ways and you can influence him too," Jack chuckled and indicated to the Doctor. "But, if you can get him to do a template rather than run his mouth you'd be doing better than any of us."

"Do you do templates?"

"I drown in them," Jack confirmed.

"But you don't work for UNIT do you?"

"No, I used to work for another agency, but we can't talk about that at all because the Doctor has had no contact with them yet and he can't know about it until the time comes. Sometimes I am loosely linked to UNIT because of Mickey and Martha. I expect I'll help them out with the creatures at some point. Sometimes I'm affiliated with the Doctor and we deal with things together. We don't always agree, but where he knows the stuff I tend to know the people and we usually make a good team. You'll do great with him, kid, but don't forget there is a normal real world you need to learn to negotiate too and don't forget the templates."

"Mum was all about the real world and the paperwork," Josh commented. "I won't forget."
