Chapter Three | Neither of Those
. . .
Sue cleared her throat and glanced at the young woman next to her. "Well, not that you ate much." Sue stood as she paused, waiting for Loveless to take the hint. "I do hope you are fed though." She eyed the girl. "We'll get Emily to fatten you up a little." Her eyes twinkled as she mentioned the other. "Let's get you to Sam's, honey." Her voice was soft as she pressed unlock on the key-fob.
"Yes." Loveless's voice was clipped as she placed herself in the passenger seat. She heaved a soft sigh and placed the neon pink headphones back into her ears. This ride was going to be longer than the four hour ride.
Sue hummed softly as she turned the radio down and tapped Loveless on the shoulder. "We live pretty far off out - not close to many others." She smiled as she glanced at the young woman. "I thought I could tell you a little about the place that you will now call home?"
"It will not be my home." Her eyes were dead as she pulled a neon pink earbud from her ear. Loveless heaved a small quiet sigh and wiggled back against the seat. "If there isn't much, what could there be to tell me?" She was sort of willing to at least give the woman a life vest. Sue had gotten Bella away from her.
Sue smiled widely as she spoke softly. Her voice filling the silence of the car.
"That it?" Loveless glanced at the woman. A part of her was hoping the other would say more.
The older woman chuckled softly. "Yes sweetie, that is about it."
"Okay." Loveless held back sighing deeply. She let her head fall back against the seat as she reviewed the information once more. The middle of nowhere. That was the easiest way to explain it.
"You will love it here". Sue smiled, "Oh! And through the woods on our left is the beach - but a little ways down their is a clearing that leads you there: its called First Beach - its pretty long and beautiful." She continued to babble. "I know it looks like we are pretty far away from civilization - but we're not. In all truth its about a 7-8 minute walk back to all of the stores. La Push might be small but it looks deserted because of all of the trees."
Loveless bit back a crude remark and kept silent. There were nine houses. Four houses were placed on each side of of the man made gravel road. What stood out was the house at the end of the cul-de-sac. It was the head, like that of a snake. All alone. More run-down and out of place than the other houses, neglected. There almost seemed to be too much space between each house - as if they were waiting to add more houses.
"And here we are," Sue turned left at the end of the street - the last house before the cul-de-sac - and pulled into the driveway. She smiled, honking the horn.
Loveless glared at the group of boys that scrambled out and onto the lawn and porch. She groaned inwardly and stepped out of the car. She purred softly and stretched, her silver, sleeveless shirt rode up a little: reveling a thin sliver of tanned skin. The long black beaded necklace swayed slightly. Loveless gave no care as she openly stared.
Three stood on the porch, the biggest and tallest of the bunch. Six others stood out on the lawn. All were tall with shoulders bulky and the stature of those held above others.
They all look like clones. Loveless closed her eyes and breathed in softly - a blank expression on her features. She took a small step forward. Loveless - for Sue's benefit - pretended to reach in her purse and turn the music off before placing the neon pink headphones in her purse. Loveless snuggled deeper into the confines of her hoodie. She didn't like people.
An awkward silence filled the air with a heavy tension. They stared at her as she stared at them. Neither seemed eager or prone to give in.
"Which clone is Samuel Uley?" She sneered the name with a cruel viciousness that she wouldn't have been able to hide even if she had tried. If none of them want to speak first . . . Loveless was far from shy - especially when she was being forced into a position she did not want. Loveless smirked at their shocked expressions. Her icy blue eyes fell on one of the bigger looking ones as he moved off of the porch and towards her.
Sue took a deep breath and moved to stand beside the young brunette. That could have gone worse. And that was something Sue Clearwater was sure of. It the short time she had been around the younger woman it was plain to see she was a fierce and much like a wounded animal in a corner. "Honey," she watched as Sam moved in closer.
"Hello," Sam almost swallowed his tongue as he stared down at her. She was tiny as hell. Smaller than the pictures led him to believe. His heart twisted in his chest, the barbed wires that had taken residence in his chest when he had gotten the call twisted and yanked at his insides. She had Joshua Uley's blood in her veins. Sam could see it. See the resemblance.
A soft smile flickered across her features as she glanced at him "Nicole," Sue cut in quickly before same could utter a word. Her eyes narrowed as she dared the taller male to say any thing other wise.
Loveless's icy eyes flickered over to Sue's momentarily. She continues to do things to get on my good side. A tiny ghost of a smile crossed Loveless's lips as she glanced at Sue once more. Sue was okay in her book. So far.
"Ah . . . Yes, Nicole." A moment of confusion crossed Sam's features before he schooled them. Sue was silently warning him. He knew her real name. Loveless. He still couldn't believe it. He swallowed hard as the barbed wires pulled taut against his lung. It was his fault she had been forced into this.
Loveless stayed quiet. Sue seemed to be able to cover the side of the conversation she would need to say. And she had no issue with the elder woman speaking to Samuel for her. She didn't want to speak with him.
"I'm glad you're here." Sam whispered as he stared down at her. His dark eyes shimmered as he forced off the tears. It wasn't because the other wolves would make fun of him later - and they would. No, Sam didn't want to loose it in front of Loveless. She had enough people that she was supposed to depend on that gave up and fell down into their own human weakness. He didn't want her to think he would do the same. He wouldn't.
She snorted, "sure you are." Her voice was sugary sweet as she leveled him with a dark stare. She remembered that phone call. And by the looks of the flinch that took over his body before he could stop, so did Samuel.
"I am." He tried once more. "Come on in . . . Emily should be here soon."A smile took over his features as he thought of his beloved imprint.
"Boys, grab her stuff for me," Sue announced. She walked closer to Loveless. "It was a great pleasure to meet you, Nicole Wickers." Her eyes sparkled. "I live two houses down and over. You come to me for anything." A motherly affection colored her voice as stared at the young moan.
Loveless arched an eyebrow in amusement. "Goodbye, Mrs. Clearwater."
She smiled, "call me Sue - everyone does." Sue bit her lower lip to keep from pulling the other into a warm, comforting hug. And ground that she gained during this trip would have been lost completely with that single notion.
"No."
Sue frowned and heaved a small sigh as she walked away. "Okay honey. I'll see you soon, call me if you need more before then." Sue smiled once more as she glanced at Sam. "Quil! You better be home by dinner." Sue flashed a wide smile to all of the boys before returning to her car.
"Um," Sam cleared his throat and flinched as icy blue eyes focus on him once more. Those could 'literally' kill someone. "Your room is set up. I'll take you there."
Loveless's bored eyes flickered around the room then back to Sam as she waited. Her head cocked to the side as she stared at him. Loveless wasn't one to back down. It was nearly impossible with the family she grew up with.
Sam scratched the back of his neck. "I'll let you get settled in." His frown deepened as he waited a beat before walking away.
"You could at least say thank you - we all put a lot of work into this room for you." A tall clone snapped at her from the doorway.
Loveless blinked, not phased and certainly not at all impressed.
"Jacob, be nice. Hi I'm Seth." A short clone chirped happily, giving her a wide smile.
Loveless cocked her head to the side. A cruel glint lingered in her eyes. "Go away." She didn't want his fake kindness. It wouldn't get either of them anywhere.
Seth frowned but did as told.
Jacob glared, "If you don't want to be here then why are you?"
Loveless narrowed her eyes and walked closer. Her hand gripped the door. "What the fuck makes you think I came here willingly?" Loveless snapped. Before he could remove the shock from his face, she slammed the door. A smirk on her features as she heard him yelp softly, cursing under his breath.
. . .
Jared chuckled as he watched Jacob stomped down the stares holding his bruised nose. "Did you make a new friend?" His head cocked to the side in question - a smirk on his lips.
"Shut Up!" Jacob snapped at the elder.
"Sit!" A loud voice snapped harshly.
Jacob turned to retort before seeing who had yelled. Quickly his head lowered as he dropped to the floor - like most of the others who weren't already sitting.
"You might be Alpha - but that was an abuse of power," Seth whined as he rubbed his sore bottom, from quickly dropping to the ground.
Their Alpha shrugged. "Jacob, Seth, Quil, and Embry - Patrol on the East and South side. The four boys nodded. "Jared - take Brady and Collin with you - same routes as last night."
The youngest pouted - it was no fun getting stuck with the Beta, he actually had some power and could order them around - unfair!
Their Alpha smirked, knowing full well while Brady and Collin were pouting. He turned slightly towards the couch, "Sam take the night off - you have . . . quite a lot of work ahead of you." He smirked and chuckled at the softly glare the elder gave him.
"Thanks Paul." Sam exclaimed as he smiled. To night is going to be a long night.
Paul smiled, "I'm your Alpha - I'm supposed to do what's best."
"So why does my butt hurt," Seth grumbled.
The other's chuckled.
Jared was the first to stand, "Kim's got dinner on the stove - I can smell it." He smiled cheekily as the others laughed.
"Seth, Collin, Brady . . . Quil and Embry - go home. Eat, relax a little then get ready for work." Paul ordered softly as not to make it an alpha order. "Jared, I'll see you later at the point."
Jared nodded as he waved goodbye.
"Well," Paul heaved a sigh and plopped down on the couch next to Sam - his feet propping up on the coffee table. "So what do you think of her?" He questioned quietly - to quietly for human ears.
Sam shrugged.
Jacob winced, his fingers reaching up to touch his healed nose. Glad I'm a wolf. "I don't like her." He mumbled.
"Yeah?" Paul smirked, "that's cause you pissed her off." He shook his head as Sam opened his mouth. Paul's smirked widened, "that's cause you pissed her off too."
The three wolves turned towards the door as it was swung open.
"Where is she?" Emily exclaimed, a giggle escaping from behind her lips. Her beautiful smile taking away from the three scars on her right cheek. She bounced lightly in place - the five brown paper bags with hemp like handles bouncing with her.
Jacob ran to her side - taking the bags. "Let's not hurt the food." He smiled cheekily while walking towards the kitchen.
Emily rolled her eyes and looked expectantly at the elder two boys on the couch.
"She's in her room," Sam paused as he placed a chaste kiss on her cheek. "I wouldn't go up there . . ."
Emily rolled her eyes, "nonsense. It's you she doesn't like. Not me." She winked at her husband and made he way up the stairs. She heaved a small sigh and knocked on the door. She took the knob in her hand and twisted it open. A gasp escaped from behind her lips.
Loveless turned, arms and shirt raised in the air. Quickly, she lowered the shirt and glared at the elder woman.
Tears pooled in the corners of Emily's eyes. "I'm so . . ."
Seriously? Loveless rolled her eyes. "Shut the damn door! I never said come in." She heaved a small sigh - her anger slowly lessening. "i'm not hungry and I don't want to get to know you."
Emily nodded numbly. Images of Loveless's lower back burned into her memory. How could someone do that? Her brows furrowed. She let her feet carry her into the kitchen where the other three were. Quickly she felt warm arms wrap around her wait - embracing her in a safe heat. She wrapped her arms around his broad shoulder as she was lifted off of the ground. Tears slid down her cheeks as small sobs racked her body.
"What did she do," Sam growled deeply in the back of his throat. A dangerous aura surrounding them in the kitchen.
Emily shook her head before burying it deeper in the crook of his neck. Slowly the sobs lessened. "It wasn't her."
"Baby what do you mean? Why are you crying?" He rubbed sooth circled along her spine and he whined softly in her ear before nuzzling her neck.
Emily heaved a small sigh and laid her head on his shoulder as she was moved to sit on his lap while he sat on a dining chair. she heaved a watery sigh. "Sam . . . there were scars." Her hand lifted to her cheek. "Scars kind of like mine."
Sam and the others tensed.
"Scars like mine, and burns on her back." Emily's voice quavered.
Sam's eyes widened. Did father do that? Oh God! He clenched his eyes shut to block out his thoughts as he tugged Emily closer.
Jacob frowned, "It would explain why she's so guarded and bitchy. She's trying to protect herself from being hurt. She's fragile."
Emily shook her head and smiled at Sam. "She's here with us now. She's an Uley - Uley's are strong."
"I am neither of those." Loveless snapped from the entrance to the kitchen.
Hope you like a few of the changes!
