The four pillars spun on their own axes, creating an energy field. As they spun individually, they began to also spin around the chamber, spinning faster and faster. An alarm went off.
"Something's wrong. It's overloading," the Doctor said.
The technicians tried to stop it, but the panels exploded, sending sparks flying. The Doctor jumped and flew over the desk and buzzed the sonic screwdriver at the controls.
"Somebody stop him! Get him away from those controls!" Lady Thaw shouted.
"If this thing goes off, it'll take the whole building with it. Is that what you
want?" the Doctor questioned. He pulled out one of the main wires connecting the controls to the cabinet and the pillars slowly stopped spinning.
Martha ran to the door and the Doctor flew to join her.
Lazarus, a horrible, skeletal, scorpion-like monster, bore down on a woman, who just stood there, too terrified and stunned to move.
"No! Get away from her!" the Doctor shouted. He flew to knock her out of the way, but he was too far away. He watched with horror as Lazarus sucked the energy right out of her and dropped her empty shell of a body on the ground.
Lazarus turned and approached Francine and Leo.
"Lazarus! Leave them alone!" the Doctor shouted.
Martha ran forward and helped Francine and Leo to safety.
"What's the point if you can't control it?" the Doctor shouted, landing in front of the monster, "The mutation's too strong. Killing those people won't help you. You're a fool, a vain old man who thought he could defy nature. Only Nature got her own back, didn't she? You're a joke, Lazarus! A footnote in the history of failure!" He jumped into the air and flew up the stairs.
Lazarus chased him. The Doctor led him away from the guests, flying through hallways. Lazarus crashed after him. The Doctor flew into a dark service hall filled with pipes. He floated silently between them. Lazarus also managed to creep silently despite his size.
"It's no good, Doctor. You can't stop me," Lazarus hissed.
"Is that the same arrogance you had when you swore nothing had gone wrong with your device?"
"The arrogance is yours. You can't stand in the way of progress."
"You call feeding on innocent people progress? You're delusional!"
"It is a necessary sacrifice."
"That's not your decision to make."
The power suddenly returned and the lights flashed on, exposing the Doctor.
"Peek-a-boo," Lazarus hissed.
The Doctor looked up to see Lazarus on the ceiling directly above him. "Oh, hello."
He pushed against the pipes and flew out of the room. Lazarus chased him. He flew through corridors and managed to lose the creature for the moment. He flew into a lab and fiddled with the battery of a light fixture, leaving wires exposed. He flew around turning on all the gas jets.
He ducked behind a counter as he heard Lazarus approach.
"More hide-and-seek, Doctor? How disappointing. Why don't you come out and face me?"
"Have you looked in the mirror lately?" He stood up. "Why would I wanna face that, hmm?" He jumped and flew backwards. He flipped over and smacked a switch as he flew out, making the room explode behind him.
He flew over a railing and across a gap in the floor to the walkway on the other side. He caught the wall to swerve around a corner and ran into Martha, knocking her down with a surprised scream. He caught her under her arms. "What are you doing here?" he asked, floating above her.
"I'm returning this." She held up the sonic screwdriver. "I thought you might need it."
He pulled her to her feet and lowered himself to the ground as he took the sonic screwdriver. "How did you . . . ?"
"I heard the explosion. Guessed it was you."
"I blasted Lazarus."
"Did you kill him?"
Lazarus crashed through the door and leapt across the gap, smashing the railings on both sides.
"More sort of annoyed him, I'd say."
