Better Days

Chapter 374

Author's Note : First of all, can I say last night episode rocked. That's what I'm talking about! Second of all, I guess I'm doing bottle neck chapters. You guys aren't complaining are you? Changed my mind about what I'm doing with David, not sure if he is staying alive yet, guess he'll tell me. Please review.

David and Summer's POV:

David ran behind Summer as they made there way to the hill. "We aren't going to make it before the herd," he told her.

"We have to," Summer told him. "We don't have a choice. Our family is counting on us," she said as she ran.

David grabbed her arm. "Stop," he told her. "You need to take a breath. They don't get tired, we do," he told her.

"We also move faster then them. We need to beat them there, we need to be ready," Summer said. "We can't stop, it's not an option."

"If we die, then we aren't any help to anyone, are we?" David asked.

"We caught our breath, come on," Summer said as she proceeded to remove her arm from his grasp. "We need to get going," she said as they both heard noises. "Like now," she said as she started to run.

"Shit!" David yelled as he felt a bullet graze him. He turned and fired in the direction of the shot but wasn't able to see anything. "Come on let's go," David said as he grabbed her arm.

"How bad is it?" Summer questioned.

"Had worse," David responded.

"Do you think it's the group that hit home? The Wolves?" Summer asked.

"I don't think that they'd be willing to answer that question right now, Summer. They did just shoot at us," David pointed out.

Summer stopped as she heard the familiar sound of moaning in front of them. "Walkers'," she said. "Some of them must have broke off from the herd," she said.

"Or they could just be random ones. There's more of them then us," David pointed out.

"Well we aren't adding to that number, not today," Summer insisted as a handmade arrow hit her on the upper part of her leg.. "Shit!" she said as she fell to the ground. "Who the hell are these people?" she asked.

David pointed his gun at the woods. "We need to radio Jes," he told her.

"No! Absolutley not," Summer told him.

David looked at her. "You have an arrow sticking out of your leg, I've been shot," he told her.

Summer looked at him as she pulled out the arrow. "Not anymore," she hissed in pain. "Nice piece of work," she said as she admired the arrow. "And you're hardly bleeding, we can keep going," she insisted as she stood up grimacing in pain.

"Right, want to try to take a few steps before you say that again?" David asked as he took her arm and moved her into the cover of trees.

"Summer?" Rick's voice said over the radio.

Summer picked up the walkie talkie. "We're here. We got slowed down by some walkers', we'll be in position soon," she said as she shook her head and mouthed not now to David who was telling her to tell him they were bleeding. "We'll be ready," she said as she ended the transmission.

"You know there are times that you just have to admit that you have to give up. It's not failing, it's admitting your human. Right now you are hurt, we got walkers' in one direction and unknown people shooting at us in another. You aren't going to be able to stand, let alone walk. We can't make it there in time," David insisted.

Summer tore the sleeve of her shirt and tied it around her leg. "I'm not giving up. I'll take my last breath before I stop."

"People die, all the time. What we had, back there, it was a lie It's always been a lie. People aren't meant to live nice quiet lives with those we love anymore, it's a stupid pipe dream, and it's over. Everyone is dead back there, if we keep going, then we're dead too. It's time to cut our losses," David told her.

Summer glared at him, punching him throwing the walkie at him. "Do what you need to do, and I'll do what I need to do. I was wrong, you aren't one of us, not before and not now," she said as she picked up a sturdy stick and tested walking on it.

"Summer! I didn't mean it, you know it, I was just trying to think logically, think of the odds. They are stacked against us," David said as he stood up to follow her.

Summer turned and pointed her rifle at him. "The odds are always stacked against us and they always will be," she said as she walked off.

"Summer!" David yelled as walkers' appeared between them, blocking each other off from the other.

Summer ignored him calling her and continued walking. She hobbled toward the bridge and went to grab her knife and stabbed a walker. "Damn it!" she said as she saw more walkers' come toward her. She managed to disperse them but got winded and leaned against a tree. She looked back toward the direction that she left David and still saw walkers' mulling around. She had left him with the walkie talkie and wondered if he would come after her or contact the others and tell them they got separated She sure was going to tell them the truth. She had to see this through, everyone they loved was back in Alexandria counting on them.

David's POV:

David looked after Summer as she went off, and continued killing walkers'. After killing all the walkers', he looked in the direction Summer ran. He looked at the gun in his hand and the walkie talkie. He put the gun to his shoulder and took a shot and grimaced in pain. He took a breath as he hit the button on the walkie talkie. "Jes, come in," he said in between breaths.

"I'm here," Jes answered.

"Summer and I got separated, people were shooting at us, herd came through. I'm not sure where she is, there's walkers' everywhere," David explained.

"You hurt?" Axel asked.

"Shot in the shoulder and arm," David said.

"Can you make your way down here?" Jes asked. "You can tell us which way Summer went."

"She's blocked off by walkers', there's no way to get to her or I would have went after her," David told her, as he looked after where she went.

"Rick, do you copy?" Jes said, receiving nothing but static. "Daryl," she said.

"Shit," David thought to herself.

"Go ahead," Daryl said.

"Did you copy what David said?" Jes questioned.

"No, what did you say David?" Daryl questioned.

David took a breath before speaking. "A herd separated us, some unknown group shot at us, an arrow got Summer in the leg. After I dispatched some of the walkers', I looked for Summer in the direction I saw her go, but didn't find anything. I've been shot," he said. He knew that he was dead if he didn't sound believable.

"I'm on my way," Daryl said.

"No, you have a job to do," Jes said. "Summer's smart, she'll make her way to her spot, or she'll hide out until it's safe. Either way, I'll go look for her. She'd want us to continue doing this to protect Alexandria," she told him.

"You're asking me to leave my niece out there alone," Daryl simply stated.

"Jes is right, Daryl. Summer is smart. She'll find somewhere safe to hide out or she'll make it to her spot. She's a Dixon, she isn't going to give up easily," Sasha said.

"We drive this herd out, I'll join you in looking for her," Abraham said.

"We all will," David answered. "She's like my sister, you know," he said as he started walking to the railroad tracks.

"We aren't going to desert her, Daryl, but there's a lot of people depending on us," Sasha said.

"Alright, let's get this done," Daryl said as he shook his head.

"Do you need any help getting to us?" Jes asked David.

"No, I've got it," David said, not wanting to face Jes any sooner then necessary.

Summer's POV:

Summer leaned on the tree, grimacing in pain. She turned to look in the direction she came, knowing there was to many walkers' to go back. She had to try to make it to her spot, but she had to control the bleeding and she couldn't do it out in the open. She wasn't familiar with this area, and knew she was at least two hours away from Alexandria. She was going to be blocked from the main road by the herd on either side. She was cursing herself for giving David the walkie talkie. She underestimated how injured she was, and knew that the smell of blood was going to draw walkers' soon. She put down her backpack and emptied the plastic bag she had inside and put it over her head. She grabbed one of the walkers' and stabbed it in the head. "I'm sure you were a good person before, and I'm sorry this happened to you," she said as she started to cut it's guts' out. "And, I'm really sorry that I have to do this to you. You look like a Kate, so we'll go with that. I'm sure you wouldn't want me to end up like this, and I need to get somewhere without your buddies eating me. So, Kate, just think of it that you died to help save me. That's a good thought right? Don't feel like you have to answer," she assured the corpse. She took a breath as she smeared the guts on the plastic bag that was over her. "I hope that you had a good life, Kate," she said as she stood up and put her bag over her shoulder. She took a breath as she ditched the stick she was walking with and used her hurt leg to her benefit as she shuffled like a walker. She managed to walk for a little while before she needed to rest. She knew she was getting weaker and needed to find somewhere to lay low for a bit. She climbed up a hill, looking over at a walker and taking a breath. She noticed a shed and saw a car parked near it. She grimaced as she debated if she should use her rifle or bow, she decided on her her bow. She limped over to the shed and leveled her bow. She took a breath as she felt a gun to her head. "I'm not here to cause trouble, I just need to take care of a wound."

"Lay down your weapons and turn around slowly," the males voice said.

Summer took off her bow and put it down and went to lay down the her rifle, but her leg gave out on her and she fell to the ground. She looked up at him. "Jesus..." she said as she passed out.
