Hamish had felt sorry for getting drunk the night before and maybe it was guilt or trying to get back into her good graces since Vera wasn't on speaking terms with him right now. He'd bought about 15 bouquets of roses and had them delivered to the house so they could all be set up in the kitchen and living room and even in the bedroom upstairs. It wouldn't take long for her to get home since her morning sickness was kicking her ass. He felt bad for her but she never wanted anyone to feel sorry for her. The hardest part of seeing her like that was knowing in two more days it would all be over. There was a jitteriness to Hamish, he was still trying to work through it and get used to the idea that the good parts of his dreams were never going to actually happen.
He still waited patiently though to surprise Vera because at least for now he had her still and that was something. Crouched beside the couch with a small stuffed animal husky in his hands he kept silent even when he could hear Vera come into the house with a loud "What the hell?" The familiar sound of her heels clicking over the hardwood floor made his heart race as he waited for the perfect opportunity. "Hamish?" She asked looking around and setting her bag down on the counter. Sitting down on the couch she let out a groan and leaned back to try and relax while opening up the card left on the counter for her.
Without her knowledge a slow creeping form rounded over the arm of the couch. A stuffed husky with it's mouth wide open and tongue hanging out in the sort of way that could either cause nightmares or make you go 'awww'. "Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night."
Vera startled nearly cutting her finger on the envelope and suddenly put as much space between herself and the other side of the sofa as possible. "AH." She shouted almost hitting Hamish in the face with the card as he tried getting up to tell her it was alright. "Hamish?" Vera looked at him confused as hell and wanting to ask what he was doing but was there a point? "What the hell is that thing?" She pointed to the small stuffed animal.
"It's a wolf." He replied a little semi proud of himself but a bit defeated since his plan didn't work out so well.
Vera took the 'wolf/husky' from his hand and threw it to the other side of the couch. "Well it's creepy."
"I was trying to surprise you." He got up and sat on the arm of her sofa, crossing his legs and leaning towards her. "And apologize for my behavior. I didn't mean to drag you into that but we all have ways of coping with things, and drinking is mine."
"Successful, you surprised me, more like frightened me." She looked around at all the roses a moment. "You know I don't like roses."
Hamish felt shocked, wait? How did he not know she didn't even like roses. "But, you are in the Order of the Blue Rose."
Vera shrugged her shoulders. "Doesn't mean I have to like them."
"Oh." He let his shoulders sink down a little as Vera opened her card. She was quiet as she read it over, sniffling a bit and shaking her head to avoid crying at all. Again, she wasn't a big fan of being very emotional but there was very little that could be done about it for now. Setting the card down in her lap Vera looked over at Hamish not certain what to say.
"Thank you for the card, and the flowers, and the...attempt to not frighten me." Hamish Duke was almost so perfect it was annoying and yet somehow she'd managed to attract his attention. What Vera thought would just be a very fun boy toy to play with had become something so much more than that and she didn't want to risk losing him. "So, are you ready for next week?"
"What's next week?" Hamish asked as he slid down the arm of the sofa and sat next to her.
"My appointment." She stated rather matter of fact.
Hamish sat back from her a little. "But it's in two days Vera." And why did she have to bring that up right now? He was having a good day, he was putting that pain out of his mind and she just had to stab him with it right through the heart again.
"No, I mean next week at the ultrasound. I want you there." Hamish looked around the room trying to figure her out. Sometimes he felt like he was trying to translate Latin when he was talking to her.
"Are we?" He paused seeing a little light flash in her eyes. "Are we having a baby?"
Vera shrugged her shoulders trying to avoid looking right at him because he was just going to make her a mess. "I mean, Angus Duke is a very nice name but then again so is Mason."
He sat there with his mouth agape trying to process what she had just said. Vera was about to say something but her words were literally knocked out of her chest when Hamish almost aggressively grabbed her and hugged her. She could feel him shaking a little against her. Realizing he's knocked the breath right out of her however Hamish pushed her back up and placed his hands on her shoulders. "Vera, I'm sorry, I got too excited." He placed his hand on her belly knowing their baby was there growing, getting stronger, eventually to be out here with them and become the center of his whole world. He could hardly wait but he wasn't about to rush it along either. "Permission to get attached now?"
Vera hardly had time to answer before Hamish leaned down and kissed her stomach. "I have a whole library of books I wanted to read to you and music you need to hear. I mean there is a lot, I hope you like modern jazz? New Orleans Jazz? Nevermind, you know I'll just make you a whole playlist with a little bit of everything just so you have a more open taste in music. Also main tip to you, no matter who says what never trust that tomatoes actually taste good. They are related to the nightshade family and can't be trusted."
"Okay, okay Hamish, maybe you might want to save that advice for when the baby is actually born because I don't think they are going to remember that right now or care what you read them or what music you play." Hamish cut her words short kissing her on the lips and pulling her into his lap. "Hamish." Vera tried to get a word out between his barrages of kissing. This felt a little familiar to her honestly. "I'm still…" She tried to catch her breath once more, his lips pressing into hers. "I still don't feel well."
He stopped remembering she was still on the bad end of her first trimester. "That's right, I'm going to get you some crackers and a ginger ale. Wait can you even have a ginger ale? I mean is ginger okay?" Hamish just realized he was going to need to read through a lot of books to see what was and what wasn't okay for Vera right now.
"No, it's fine." Okay that was good then. Hamish grabbed his jacket and got up heading to the door. "Where are you going?"
Hamish went back and kissed her on the forehead. "You don't have ginger ale in the house so i need to go get some. I'll be right back but maybe you should go lay down for now. It would be good for you. Also avoid stress Vera it's not good for you two."
Vera was about to say something but she just remained quiet. Well now she knew that Hamish was really on board with this whole thing. If she had any fear of him running they were dismissed by now. Her real problem was how she was going to survive the next 8 months of this without the urge to kill him.
