Chapter 1: Familiar

It all happened too fast. He saw Akainu before him with his magma fist ready to attack. And he knew, right there and then, that his family's sacrifice would be in vain. Because Ace saw that he will not escape the marines alive.

His fire was burned out and he could not move his arms... they were too badly burned from Akainu's magma.

"Just because we are both logia and you got too careless? You are just "fire" while I am "lava", which burns even fire. Our powers are in a relationship of superiority!" All the while the red Admiral demonstrated his power and did not seem wounded at all. Like he just batted away an annoying fly.

And it all angered Ace more than he could express. That bastard… he….

"Pirate King Gold Roger. Revolutionary Dragon! Their sons actually became brothers. How terrifying! Just your blood alone has been shaped into a huge sin! Even if I let somebody else get away, I will never let the two of you go!" proclaimed Akainu without remorse. He did not feel pity for pirate scum…. their end has to be absolute.

"Ace…move!"

"ACE!"

The whitebeard's tried to move closer, to protect, to attack, to do anything, anything at all to change the current situation. But the soldiers just would not stop coming at them and where one felt down, another took his place. And all the while they watched in despair how Akainu approached their second commander, their friend, their brother and the strawhat without fail.

But then he stopped, and the situation took a turn for the worst…

"Take a good look." Akainu ignored firefist to attack his new target. After all, why just kill when you can further prove your superiority by showcasing their powerlessness in front of their eyes?

With wide eyes Ace watched the red Admiral move to attack his little brother. His little brother who just sat there holding his vivre card. His little brother who could not possibly escape a full magma attack. After all, rubber just melts when confronted with heat…

"Hey… STOP!" He tried to get moving, to stand, to get Akainu's attention of his brother. But his body just will not much an inch.

"LUFFY!"

But his brother just looked up and watched with wide eyes at the magma figure in front of him. And then all went quiet….

Silence.

Not a sound, a word... nothing. All eyes were locked onto the event happening right in front of their eyes. With bated breath they watched as the mist lifted but they were not prepared for what they are going to see…

Black eyes shot open with disbelief and relief while watching identical eyes look at him in confusion and typical carefreeness. Ace looked at Luffy and could not believe that he was still alive. That he did not feel the pain of being punched through.

"Ace…" Luffy grinned with palpable happiness of seeing his big brother in front of his eyes, alive.

"Luffy…"

Seeing that characteristic D. grin in front of him was infectious. With obvious relief he copied his little brother and chuckled. It seems that their luck of the past was still intact.

"ACE"

"COMMANDER"

"STRAWHAT!"

With relief and happiness, the Whitebeard's noticed the brothers spirit still being wild and free like before. They were still alive. Even after a would-be-fatal attack of the red dog, they were still grinning like…like a typical D.

"Ace…"

Marco, Vista, Jimbei and all the other commanders could not believe their luck. But even though they were very happy about the outcome, they wondered. What happened?

With these thoughts shared by more than one party, all looked at the situation behind the D's where the Admiral would have been.

And he is still there, but not as alone as they would have expected….

Ace, who still could not believe his luck, also noticed something was different and while Luffy was also crazy happy about Ace being alive, he too noticed the figure protecting their life's. But who was he? He seemed familiar…

Everyone looked at the stranger, the unknown third party, that entered the field. This stranger was clearly not to be underestimated. After all, he stopped the attack of the red dog without much strain and still does it. And while every pirate was more than happy to see the brother's alive, they could not help but feel like something is missing. Like they are missing a vital piece of a puzzle. Because why would a stranger intercept such an attack and why just appear now?

"Who the hell are you?"

Naturally, Akainu was not as happy as everyone else. How could this stranger block him? And why? Where did he come from? And how dares he come and stand between him and his target's?

"I know I said that you should life your life as free and wild as you want. But this was not was I imagined…"

The voice was deep and has a booming quality to it that was strangely familiar. And as the fog was completely lifted, they all could see the stranger more clearly.

A man with big, muscular stature, who easily reached the size of the admiral, stood in front of the brothers. His blond hair was divided. One side was longer than the other part of his hair which is close-cropped. With his upper body covered in armour, which was sleeveless, they could see his bare arms which are covered in tribal and rune tattoos. They seem to blend into another and brought a sense of forbidding to everyone seeing them. The armour seemed to consist of some form of scales with shoulder pats who seemed to be heavier than normal. His black trousers were stuffed into his black boots and seemed to have little runes ingrained into them.

But the most eye-catching feature were his eyes. Because they were a colour to rare and familiar for everyone present. The ochreous colour of his iris was only known to be present in one other individual. And the implication of that knowledge sent a shiver down every one's spine.

"What…"

That voice. It was to familiar for Ace and Luffy. They knew it from somewhere... but where?

"It has been a long time, Ace... Luffy."

With growing eyes, the brother's watched as their protector turned his head a little and were confronted with a wide D-like grin and ochreous eyes full of laughter and warmth. For right then and there they remembered. Because how could they forget the one person who once stood always in front of them. That one person who they could always count on to have their back…

"What did you do now?"

"Oh…you sure you want to do that to these brats?"

"I would not do this if I were you"

"If you know what is good for you then you will release them… at once."

"I may not be always at your site, but I will always be with you. And should you ever need me, I will put everything on hold and return to your site. After all, family must stay together, right?"

Every pirate and marine alike watched baffled as the previous fugitive brothers made a complete 180° turn. Gone were the panicked expression and tension in their shoulders.

Because right in front of their eyes the D. brothers seemed to relax as if they do not have to be worried anymore. As if a monumental weight has been lifted of their shoulders.

"It is about time…"

"You came…."

Nobody but them and the stranger understood what was happening. But one thing was clear. With matching D.-like grins and the attitude of a carefree child, the brothers knew this stranger very well. And if his answering grin is anything to go by, the situation just got interesting…

"Ruce!"
