Hello. Today, later than usual, I bring the third part of the chapter. In this one, you'll know more about Telvar's and Sigan's past, and, if you take your glasses, you could see something about Balinor. I hope you like it!
I'm not own from Merlin.
"Yes, the so-called Great Dragon."
Every time he listened more, the more sense it made, but at the same time, he understood less. It was a strange feeling, the typical feeling where you think you understand everything, but, deep down, you know you have understood less than you used to know. That's how Merlin felt at the time, without believing what he had heard. He had never imagined Kilgarrah outside the depths of the castle and had never really thought that there had been a time when he had been free and out of bounds.
He assumed there was a motive to burn a pacific town, or at least he hoped that. He had always thought that Kilgarrah was a good person (or dragon in this case) and had never thought that could do something like burning this very town (though he was at the moment burning Camelot).
After hearing that the same dragon that now burned Camelot, his city and home, had also burned the Cursed Town, the four looked at each other for a few seconds.
"As far as I can see in your expressions, you've heard of it, haven't you?" Hilda argued by looking at the four with some curiosity.
"More than we would like," Arthur murmured more to himself than to the others.
"And can we ask why that dragon wanted to burn down the village?" asked Morgana.
"I don't know exactly, but from what I could observe, the dragon came from the same caves of the depths. I don't know why our town burned down, honestly."
"And do you think he could have been commanded by someone instead of acting on his own?" asked Merlin with extreme caution, as if in every word he gave he could easily mess it up by revealing something he shouldn't. His life was like that: he was often in danger from what he said, and he must have been very careful about it. Evidently, he had asked that for only one reason.
Hilda seemed to think the question a lot as if she had seen something suspicious in it, but at the same time, she was like meditating it, looking at Merlin with curiosity.
"It could be, yes, but the thing is, it doesn't matter anymore. Luckily I didn't end up smoked like some who ended up, God foresees them. But the thing is, this has nothing to do with the story we were talking about since this happened much later. After Telvar's alleged death."
"Walking around, we must gather that there was a time when Telvar stopped going with Sigan to his expeditions from the depths. I never knew why I never dared to ask, but I always suspected that something happened between the two of them, and many times I thought it was related to the Key to Wisdom. I thought maybe they'd already found it and it could have ended badly, since nothing hurts more than the truth, and that's what the Key of Wisdom usually gives to the questions you ask. And what I have also sometimes suspected is that, since then, the valley in general, and specifically the gorge next door that seems to me to have a giant name, changed a lot in bad terms. Howls and squeals of shapeless and figurative beasts were heard every night in the gorge from even this very village. And I assumed something had to do with it, and I was telling myself, that with the Key to Wisdom.
"When I saw Telvar and Sigan seem to distance each other, instead of griding me from the friendship that seemed to disappear between them, I was glad, as I suppose you will know, and, oh yes, how glad I was. I was glad to have Telvar in my arms and that Cornelius out of my sight again. And so it was, for a few months. I'll never forget those passionate months. A perfect relationship was what floated between me and Telvar, and I'll never forget it. We were still boys, fourteen-year-olds, but the relationship seemed to come a long way. Even when the day came. That cruel and bitter day."
"It was the day Telvar's mother fell ill. Telvar quickly separated from me to be taking care of his mother. I haven't really known what happened since. I remember seeing him and his father leaving the town, but I didn't understand why. I knew that something was on that journey that made his mother recover, for when they arrived, his mother was like a flower."
"Everything seemed perfect: Sigan seemed to be gone, I don't know where or if he was really gone; Telvar's mother had survived her illness; and Telvar seemed to be cheerful and in my arms again. But how wrong I was, oh yes, how wrong I was. The next sunrise, the bodies of Telvar's parents lay dead on the ground, without any marks or wounds. And when that happened, everyone blamed Telvar for murder. He could do nothing less run away, being chased by rabid villagers."
"The only thing I remember that day was the arrival of Cornelius Sigan claiming to have killed Telvar for committing murder. And of course, for that the whole town was grateful, but I knew that this had neither feet nor head. I knew that Sigan had done something, and I would look for what."
Silence cut off the moment, making everyone look at Merlin as if they could see written on his forehead what all that meant. Merlin already knew it perfectly well: Sigan had lied. But why defame that your best friend was dead? There was something there that didn't add up. Something that, as Hilda said, happened between Sigan and Telvar. But what Merlin wondered about all this was what this had to do with his father, Balinor, if there was anything to do with him. He waited to see what else Hilda had to say, and as if she had listened to his mind, she went on.
"Since then I haven't seen Sigan too much. Well, I certainly didn't see anything for a while, because my eyes were watered in tears. But now we come to the part you had asked so much: the dragon. I saw him, I saw him before he came out of his cave and ended up squealing all over town. It was him, he was the culprit. Cornelius Sigan, always him. I knew it from the beginning and I still know it. I don't know how he got there, but the important thing is that he was there. I remember taking a walk around the village, going near the stone walls, and finding a small crack in which I heard a growl, like that of a laughing animal (which I had never imagined). And I heard it. Voices are what I heard. A grave voice, like a growl, and an almost inaudible voice. I decided to venture over there, and I arrived after passing through the hole to a large cave where Sigan appeared talking to a dragon. A dragon! And of course, he wasn't a normal dragon. When I heard Cornelius' words "Great Dragon," I knew what it was about."
"I had heard many times stories and legends of him. But I never imagined it so big and powerful. I don't know exactly what they were talking about, but I knew it wasn't good at all. I sneaked out of there like I didn't see anything, without being able to believe that what I'd seen was real. Badly done. I shut up and never thought about it again."
"Know that I think it, I remember that the family next to this house, the so-called Felgit, had had a baby. But the next day, they found that he was missing. It may not make sense of the story, but I was curious that a baby would suddenly disappear in that moment. I knew something had to do with this with the dragon and Sigan. I really don't know why did Sigan want a baby, but for malicious people like Sigan, I think that even in something pacific like a baby, they could do something bad."
"Do you know what that baby's name was?" asked Merlin.
"Abyl, it seems to me, yes. But, as the dragon and Sigan, I put it aside like a fool. In the end, I completely forgot all, and although I didn't want to realize it, I realized I hadn't seen Sigan since then. And it was years later that I got the news of Cornelius Sigan's death in Camelot."
"How did he die?" asked Merlin, knowing what was coming.
"In the fire."
Oh, a bad end to Sigan. This was the third part of the chapter. It will be the last one, hopefully, tomorrow.
Well, I hope you liked it, and see you next time.
Next part: Merlin and Hilda conversation. Do you know this locket? What do you know more about Sigan? Yes, Telvar is really alive.
