"Camping, you are going to go camping for 4th of July weekend." Hamish laid down on the ground with Theo as she held herself up and made an excitable "wah." sound. "We are going to go on a boat and eat marshmallows. Well not you but the rest of us are. We are going to sleep in a big cabin that I rented and all the wolves are going to be there." Hamish loved the traditional wolf camping trip and this year it was going to be both Jack and Gabrielle's first trip even though technically Jack would have gone last year had anyone even remembered they were werewolves. Thinking of that it was technically also Theo's first werewolf camp trip too. Theo reached up and grabbed one of her toys laying back down on her stomach as she pulled it towards her mouth and started gumming at it.
"I got you a little sun hat like your mama's too and I got you some good camping gear like a bear coat if it gets cold." And plus it was super cute, it made Theo look like a living teddy bear which she kind of just was one. She was a smiling ball of cuddles. Hamish was actually pleasantly surprised that Vera was just as excited for the camping trip, so much so she hadn't redone her nails. He'd never actually seen her even after Theo was born without her large sharp nails that could cause some serious harm if she wanted to scratch you with them. It was almost freaky seeing her with short fingernails that didn't have a french tips.
Vera came down rolling a bag across the livingroom floor as Theo pulled her toy out of her mouth and shrieked. "You are so funny." She leaned towards the ground trying to put her toy in her mouth again only to bump her face into the ground when she missed it and looked rather startled up at Vera. "It's alright, you didn't hurt yourself." Theo waited a moment to see if she should start crying by watching Vera's reaction but since her mother didn't seem too concerned Theo just went back to smiling.
"Told you, she totally feeds off you when she gets frightened or concerned." She didn't even trust Hamish's judgment because she'd ignore him if he tried to make her laugh and smile. The second she looked at Vera and saw mommy was concerned then the tears started flowing.
"Do you want to start packing the SUV?" Vera stopped her suitcase near the entryway and saw Hamish pick up Theo and sit her up while hanging onto the back of her pajamas so she could sit without falling over.
"You just want to keep Theo all for yourself." Theo started leaning to the side making Hamish catch her quickly.
"No, I just can't...I'm…." Vera paused and sat down on the arm of the sofa. "Not all to myself." She crossed her arms over her chest. "Come on you spent all morning with her. You got to dress her and have been playing with her all morning while I got things packed." She reached out and smirked at Hamish. "I miss my baby."
"Oh I mean I could spend more time with you Vera." He responded with a cheeky grin. "Okay I'll pack the vehicle." Picking up Theo he walked her over to Vera and handed her off.
Vera hugged the little girl and flipped her hair back over her shoulder a little out of Theo's immediate grasp. "That's right, I'm the one who was in 12 hours of labor to give birth to you, I think I deserve first claim on cuddles with you." That wasn't even counting the 8 months of actually carrying her and suffering through morning sickness, heartburn, and sleepless nights.
"Yeah well." Hamish tried to find a reason to be equally as right in getting all the time he wanted with Theo too. "I spent two hours helping you make her." That was also not counting late night runs to go get ice cream or pizza or whatever else Vera had a hankering for either.
Looking back at him she laughed a little, that sort of fake laugh she did when she was acting like his joke was funny but wasn't super amused. "Try eight minutes and I'm being generous." She waved her hand at him. "Now go pack up the vehicle so we can get going."
"I'll pack you." Hamish sassed back at her before getting close to her and doing a playful growl. Theo always thought his growls were so funny as she burst out with a loud scratch and smiled at him.
"Don't you encourage him." Vera laughed at their daughter. "He doesn't need that." Theo looked up at Vera scrunching up her nose a little before she sneezed and mostly spit in her mother's face. Vera was able to close her eyes just in time to avoid any amount of the spit snot shower from getting in her eyes. Opening them again she sighed, "Why do you always have to spit on me huh? Never on your dad." Granted when Hamish was holding her up in the air after she'd eaten she did throw up in his face. Lesson learned not to bounce her around and shake her too much after she ate. Walking to the kitchen Vera picked up a towel to clean up her nose before running it under the water so she could wipe off her face. Not long after she'd gotten cleaned up though Theo sneezed again making Vera try to wash off the babies face again.
"What are you allergic to me all of a sudden?" Ver stopped a moment realizing something, "Oh." What was the first thing to change in these past three months? Vera was wearing perfume, it hadn't even crossed her mind that Theo had a wolf sensitive nose. "I'm sorry." Laying Theo on the counter she held her down with one hand so she didn't try to roll away and tried washing off as much of the perfume on her neck as possible. "Well aren't your wolf like tendencies starting to come out little wolf." Theo stuck out her tongue and gurgled with a little smile on her face. Theo sneezed again clenching her fists tight and squinting her eyes. "I'm sorry Theo."
The baby took in a deep breath and started crying, giving herself the hiccups and then crying even harder between her pauses. Vera picked her up again patting her on the back.
"I can hear you but I won't,
Some look for trouble, while others don't.
There's a thousand reasons I should go about my day
And ignore your whispers which I wish would go away."
Vera could only think of a catchy song from the last Disney movie she'd watched with Hamish and Theo and she'd really only paid attention to it because they'd watched the first and second back to back with Hamish insisting that if Vera was a Disney princess' she'd be Elsa because she was a powerful Queen. That was actually accurate to her though she preferred just being called Grand Magus.
"Your not a voice, you're just a ringing in my ear,
And if I heard you which I don't, I'm spoken for I fear.
Everyone I've ever loved is here within these walls.
I'm sorry secret siren but I'm blocking out your calls.
I've had my adventure and don't need something new.
I'm afraid of what I'm risking if I followed you."
"Into the unknoooooown." Hamish startled her, cutting her off and making her quiet as he did the most dramatic followup to her singing making both her and Theo make a sort of 'what?' sound. "Sorry, you were doing a pretty great singalong I wanted to jump in." Hamish smirked, he'd actually never heard Vera sing before, she had a pretty nice voice. Also he didn't want to admit he was standing around the corner for a bit of that secretly recording her on his phone because there were some moments you needed to save forever and that had been one of them. If she knew he'd been filming any of that then she'd kill him.
"You scared me Hamish, it would be nice to warn me next time you do that." She threw the snot covered towel at him making him catch it and set it back down on the counter.
"Hey, I didn't want to cut in on your song, it was very pretty." He pointed at Theo, "She liked it." He also didn't want to admit he'd liked it too. If he could somehow get Vera drunk enough someday to sing for him that would be nice. Maybe trick her into karaoke even. "I still say you are totally Elsa."
"Just because you have a crush on a cartoon character doesn't mean I have to be that cartoon character."
Hamish put a hand on his chest. "I feel so called out right now." He took Theo from Vera. "SUV is packed pretty lady. Go get your sexy self in my SUV." He kissed Theo on the cheek and poked Vera in the back to get her towards the door. "She's totally Elsa." He whispered to Theo as he walked towards the door and locked it behind him. Hamish opened the back door to the SUV and got Theo in the car seat waiting a moment since she almost always ended up trying to fight when you had to buckle her up. Occupying her with a few toys he put the straps over her shoulder and buckled her down making Theo flip out and immediately start screaming. "You are a mighty force that can not be restrained but I have done it. Fear me."
Theo paused to look at Hamish, not impressed by his attempts to hold her down. Instead she let out another scream and threw her toy against the back of the seat. "Vera, quick, do your magical baby thing." He stepped back as Vera turned around in her own seat and reached over to Theo.
Grabbing her hand she watched Theo try to look over her shoulder. "It's alright honey I'm right here." Theo kicked her legs and screamed unable to see Vera. Hamish constantly told her maybe it was just time to turn her carseat around so she was facing forward but technically that wasn't actually safe to do until she was at least a year old. A whole year of listening to Theo scream every time she went into the car was not actually something Hamish was excited for though.
Getting into the driver's seat Hamish let out a sigh. "Vera she can't see you, maybe you need to ride in the back with her." It wouldn't have been a huge problem if it was a short drive but this was two hours and if anyone thought that Theo couldn't go two hours screaming then they hadn't met Theo scream for an hour straight at the doctor's office. She unbuckled herself and walked around the front of the SUV before getting into the back seat next to Theo. "Now I'm going to throw a fit because I can't see you." Hamish joked pretending to pound on the steering wheel and doing a joke cry. "That's you Theo, you can't function without your mommy." From the lack of the baby crying it was sort of a silent 'damn right' and there was no regret to it.
"Oh I think you'll be fine." Vera leaned forward and kissed Hamish listening to Theo make a growling sound before she whined.
"What? Theo, you have to share her. I had her first."
"Hey you two, no fighting." Vera sat back and buckled up. "God, this is like high school all over again."
"What?" Hamish looked back at her. Did she had a bunch of guys fighting over her? Actually that wouldn't surprise him.
