It had been nice getting to just watch Vera have fun and be happy and carefree. After the show there was a long line of people buying the group drinks and seeing as he didn't have an ID on him that could win him giving her a drink he decided to just impress her with his typical Hamish charm. They had sat down and talked a bit sharing a more appropriate drink of cokes since technically Vera wasn't even drinking age. Slowly everyone started to file out until the last of the improv group took off giving Vera a hug. It felt like they were the only two in the bar now laughing like old time friends and in a way they sort of were. It had been so surprising to him when they ended up in her dorm room, her room mate was out for the night with her boyfriend and Hamish was alone with Vera, a dangerous combination of forces.
It didn't cross his mind at first just how bad and dangerous this was when they fell down on her bed, Maybe he'd gotten slightly off track but he wasn't about to tell Alejandro that. Running a hand through her hair Hamish kissed her feeling his braces scrape on her teeth and giving him an unsettling feeling. She wasn't complaining though as she pulled off her shirt and straddled him. His hands resting on her hips while she leaned down and kissed him again pulling off his own shirt to reveal his less than impressive scrawny little body but Vera didn't care. He moved his hands up her sides, slipping a hand over her back and down to the small of her back. It took a moment for him to finally realize what he was doing was wrong. This wasn't right, it wasn't fair to use what he knew about her against her. Even worse it wasn't fair that he let her fall for him knowing damn well he was trying to get out of here as soon as possible. He'd break her heart if he did this to her. He wasn't going to be just another one of the asshole's who damaged that happy spirit of hers and made her bitter and cold.
"Wait, Vera, stop." Hamish pushed her off him and sat up. "I can't."
"It's okay if this is your first time, I'm not going to judge you."
"What?" Oh yeah, he had that 'never touched a girl' look to him. "No, that's not it." He put his hands on her shoulders. "I want to, I really do but it would be so wrong of me." He took a deep breath. "I feel like I'm taking advantage of you."
"Umm…" She paused looking at him. "I invited you here."
"No Vera, it's because I already know you so well." He put his hands up because instantly she looked like he was a creepy stalker. "Not, no. Hear me out alright." He took in a deep breath while she grabbed her shirt and pulled it up to her chest. He wasn't going to blame her for that reaction. "You are an Acolyte right? You've been introduced to magic."
"How the hell do you know that?" Knowing what her favorite color was or her favorite poem or the fact her favorite flowers were orchids, that was all odd and felt almost like destiny to her but knowing she was a practitioner, that wasn't something he could ask around to find out.
"Because I know you very well, where I am from. Very, very well." Hamish reached into his pocket seeing she was a little startled again. "It's okay, I'll show you." He pulled out his phone making her eyes grow wide, it was obvious phones like this were not a thing yet.
"Who the hell are you?"
"I'm from the future. Hear me out I know that sounds stupid but you sent me and another practitioner to close a time rift caused by, well you know this is a lot longer and more complicated than I thought."
"Why would I send you to close a rift?"
"Because you are the Grand Magus."
"What? I'm the Grand Magus?" Vera snorted. "You're messing with me."
"I'm really not." He unlocked his phone. "Me and the other practitioner, we got pulled into the rift and it brought us back here. We need to find the rift on this end to get home and seal it so someone else, someone with poor intentions can't come here and change the future." He could tell from the look on her face she was finding this hard to believe.
"So you are another practitioner?"
"I am." He paused. "And your fiance, which is why I know so much about you." He smirked. "Oh, and we have a baby together too."
"Don't." Vera growled at him. Dammit, he'd almost forgotten, this was wounds still open Vera. she'd lost her daughter only two years ago, as happy and peppy as she seemed she still had already gone through that pain.
"Magdalene." She was a bit shocked again that he knew, he knew her name. "You like weird names don't you. We have a daughter, her name is Theodora." Hamish smirked and found his pictures before showing her as proof. "She's so pretty and every day she looks more and more like you." He scrolled through the pictures before Vera took the phone and looked at the baby girl. It didn't register with her because Theo wasn't hers, yet but there was a sense of familiarity. Perhaps because Maggie had looked so much like her mother as well and when looking over Theo's baby pictures she saw so much of her dead daughter in her. It was still hard for her to fully grasp though, it still didn't feel real. "Sorry, yeah I take a lot of pictures of her." Actually that was most of what was on his phone minus his background being Vera AND Theo.
It hit her a bit harder though when she turned to a picture of her in the hospital holding her newborn daughter. She'd been so pissy he had caught that picture because she thought she had looked like hell but her smile was so genuine. It had been one of those moments that Hamish couldn't let go undocumented and as messy as her hair was she had been the most beautiful thing in all the world. "That's me." Well, her but older but that was most certainly her. "Why are you telling me this?" She slapped him on the back of the head. "THIS could ruin the future too." She paused a moment. "You weren't intending to let me keep these memories were you?"
Dammit, she was so smart and the little smile on his face answered it all. "No, but right now I need your help and knowing the truth gives you reason to help me for now because this isn't just my future I'm protecting, this is our future and our daughter. I want to go back home to her, to you but I can't until I find that rift." He let out a sigh. "We think it's somewhere in the temple and we don't have access but you do Vera."
"Not really." She continued to look through his pictures making him a little nervous. "I'm just an acolyte."
"Well, I'm the temple magus, whatever you can't access I can. Including the vault."
"Oh my god." Hamish jumped when Vera scrolled too far forward in his photos. Turning the phone around she showed him the semi embarrassing selfie he took of himself in the mirror in the bathroom with his shirt off so he could show off his body to Vera while she was in the office. "Who's that?"
Hamish smirked a little and ran his fingers through his dark curls. "That's actually me."
"You don't, oh." She looked at the picture again. "You are using glamour to hide your identity. Smart." Vera was still looking at that picture taking in a deep breath. "Ummm…"
"Yeah, I know." Hamish took his phone back."
"I didn't say anything."
"You really don't need to Vera, your face is bright red." To be fair when he sent that picture to her he had sort of wanted the same reaction as she had now.
"Also, I'm going to go out on a limb and say you aren't 21 or younger either."
"Nope." He was quiet again not wanting to seem creepy. "I'm 29."
"You were going to sleep with me Hasan, if that is your real name."
"No, it's Hamish and yeah, I was." He stopped himself trying not to dig a deep grave. "If you feel any better you are 34."
"Oh." Vera paused again. "Not really." She clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth. "So, umm…" She slipped back on her bed a little. "This is an awkward date."
"If it means anything to you, it was a really nice date, I really enjoy spending time with you and you are funny and brilliant and it's nice seeing you have fun."
"I don't have fun anymore?"
"I mean, fun and Vera Stone are not normally in the same sentence but I think you are fun still."
"Of course you think I'm fun, you're sleeping with me, you are sort of biased."
"And still so honest." Hamish laughed at her. "Well, I better go, meet you in the morning outside the library?" Hamish slipped his shirt back on and got up to leave her room when Vera stopped him.
"Hey, Hamish. You don't have anywhere to stay, do you, until you get back home I mean."
"No, not really. Come to think of it I wonder where Alejandro is hold up."
"You can stay here, I mean not in my bed, my room mate won't be back tonight so you can sleep on her bed." She stopped. "Sorry I don't have anything for you to wear." She paused again. "Actually, I think her boyfriend might have left some sweatpants here before if you don't mind. They might not fit you but…"
"Thanks." He looked down at the floor a moment. "I'll um, I'll change then." Vera got up riffling through her roomies stuff and finding his pants before throwing it at hamish. As he pulled his own jeans off he glanced back at Vera and scooted towards a dresser so he could hide behind it a little. "Sorry, skinny jeans and boxers don't really work." And he wasn't packing his usual equipment. It wasn't necessarily disappointing, just disappointing in comparison. Putting on the pants Hamish jumped into her room mates bed still feeling a little odd to be sleeping in a stranger's bed. On some level it would have been easier to just sleep with Vera, in her bed not with with her. At least she wasn't a stranger and she smelled nice.
