Around now Jack was starting to get nervous about Vera not being home. It had been a few hours already and Theo was starting to get antsy after her nap. She was no longer able to pay attention to any of the movies they put on, even Maddox's attempt to put on Paw Patrol which normally she would at least look at from time to time and now she was just rolling on the ground sucking on her cloth book and whining. "I think she's probably hungry." Maddox spoke up making Jack look like a frightened child lost in a grocery store and uncertain where to even start in finding his grandfather.
"Okay, so what do we do then?" Jack asked making Maddox look at him like he was stupid.
Maddox raised a brow, kind of concerned that Hamish had picked Jack of all people to come keep an eye on them. Then again Hamish did know that at least Maddox was good at looking after Theo. "We feed her." Wasn't that an obvious answer? "You have to give her a bottle though." Vera had set it up so Theo ate her baby food when they all had breakfast, lunch, and dinner so she was normally with the whole family. If others were eating their food then Theo was more likely to try eating her food.
"Cool, Hamish didn't tell me about how to do that."
Maddox got up and grabbed Theo. "It's not that hard." Jack was acting like they had to go milk a goat somewhere. "Milks in the fridge, bottles are in the cupboard, and you just have to put the bottle in the bottle warmer and then give it to Theo." Feeding her wasn't rocket science, she didn't have anything particular special to her despite being a werewolf. However she did seem to really like the smell of cooking meat since she'd always beg by Vera when she was cooking some kind of meat like a hungry little puppy. She was too little to really eat anything like a steak yet though. They went upstairs at Maddox held onto Theo so she wouldn't start crying or crawling around and causing trouble.
Jack opened the fridge pulling out a carton of milk and making Maddox cock his head to the side and narrow his eyes at him. "Seriously?"
"What?" Jack shrugged his shoulders.
"You really are an only child." Maddox sassed at him.
"So are you." Jack pushed back at him, was he having a verbal throwdown with a 10 year old?
"Not really." He wasn't the one who thought Theo was a baby cow. "It's the one in the bags."
Jack put the carton of milk back and shrugged his shoulders. "Sure, whatever, alright." He grabbed one of the bags stopping for a moment when everything started to make more sense. "Wait, is this from Vera?"
"No it's from a dog." Maddox sassed back. "Because she's a baby werewolf." Jack looked somewhat concerned and frightened and confused while Maddox hid a smile. Man, for an adult Jack asked a lot of stupid questions. "Oh course it is, Theo's a baby person you know." A getting hungrier and crabbier baby person at that. Her original little fussing was turning into full blown frustrated hungry cries. This whole thing went a lot faster when he mom or dad were here. There was no bullshitting those feedings when they knew how loud Theo could scream. "Here, hold her, I'll do it." Freaking big brother Maddox to the rescue, unflinching because he'd watched Hamish take care of it in the mornings since Vera preferred to sleep in.
He climbed up on the counter getting one of her bottles down and making sure to rinse it out with hot water before filling it up to about what he thought Hamish did. There were lines on the side to let you know how much you put in though Maddox didn't know the exact number other than Theo ate a LOT. Twisting the top on he put the bottle in the bottle warmer and plugged it in before turning it on. Theo was still whining and breaking into crying from time to time as Jack just held her and got smacked in the face by a flailing hand. "Try to calm her down, rock her or something."
Jack nodded his head while they waited. "Alright." He bounced Theo a little wishing that he'd brought Alyssa with him now. She wasn't actually good with kids either but at least she liked them more than he did. "Stop screaming Theo and I'll do anything you want, just stop screaming little werewolf." He was making up a totally off the top of his head lullaby. "You're scarier than you look when you get angry like that." Theo's eyes went blue for a moment, a bright shimmery blue at that He flinched feeling sharp scratches cut into his arm and looked down just in time to see five tiny clear wolf claws sink back into her fingers. "Oh man, you really are a little werewolf." He sounded surprised about that fact. He knew she had a pelt and everything but Hamish hadn't told him that Theo was starting to get shifting down already.
"Okay, I get it, you don't like the song. I'm sorry, I don't want to piss you off Ember, I just want to be your friend." Jack hoped by talking to the wolf that it wouldn't come back up and attack him. Once her bottle was done Maddox tested it on his wrist and figured it it was warm enough. He ran it to Jack like they were trying to defuse a bomb before it blew up and passed it off to him as Theo screamed and cried. "Here, here you go, food." He put the bottle near Theo's face making her slap it away and cry harder. "What the hell kid?"
"She's like that if you move too slow, just keep trying to give it to her."
Jack tried again this time Theo settled down enough to practically rip it from his hand or more realistically nearly ripping his hand off. Despite Theo having both hands on her bottle as soon as Jack let it go it started to tip making him quickly grab it again. Great, this was a once you start you are stuck with her sort of task. "Whoa, slow down there Theo." Jack commented as she drained this thing quickly. Maybe it wasn't the same but when he was little and chugged juice from a juicebox he'd ended up throwing up all over the place. He didn't want Theo throwing up milk all over him, that seemed like the most unpleasant experience in his life. She wasn't keen on listening though and finished off half her bottle already without even flinching.
Now that she wasn't really screaming or squirming around or in constant threat of getting herself into trouble Jack could admit she was pretty cute. Theo wasn't that intimidating, and watching her really wasn't that bad. It made Jack think maybe one day he and Alyssa would have a wolf pup of their own and hopefully by then he wouldn't be so useless with them. "Hey, Jack, don't let her start sucking down air." Maddox warned him as Theo got to the end of her bottle. He took it away from her once it ran to empty so she didn't just keep gulping air and without question Theo would.
"There, are you better now?" Jack asked the baby girl as she went back to a little more happy state. Not super happy because her parents were still gone but at least she wasn't hungry anymore. Jack put Theo back on the ground, "Alright, go back to doing destructive toddler stuff."
Maddox bolted for the basement door shutting it before Theo could race over and decide to crawl down the stairs. Once it was shut he went up to the steps to the bedrooms and sat at the bottom since the other baby gate was at the top right now to keep Theo locked up there in the mornings. "Jack you can't just put her down, you need to secure the area first." And Theo showed Jack just how talented she was when it came to getting into trouble. She moved fast at a crawl, almost as quickly as a stealthy kitty when she made a straight line into the kitchen. Finding one of the cupboards she got up to her feet and leaned against the babylocks pulling at the door with all her might and eventually popping it open.
Jack got over to the kitchen closing the door shut and hardly noticing he'd almost pinched Theo's fingers. Lucky for her she'd pulled them back just in time to avoid another crying fit. She didn't even look up at Jack as she grabbed hold of his leg and yelled before leaning in and trying to bite him. "Why are you so angry?" Jack asked as Theo fell down to the ground and looked up at him. "Oh, that's right, you're Vera's daughter too." Sometimes he forgot she wasn't just Hamish's kid, it still didn't fully click with him that Hamish and Vera were a thing. In fact it bothered Jack a bit, he wasn't jealous or anything it was just odd having his good friend with Vera. She was pretty much the closest thing he had to a mother figure and his friend and mentor was now starting a family with her, odd.
"Yeah you take after Vera a lot more than you do Hamish." Jack had to admit, he felt like Hamish was sort of the calm one in the group, also the most laid back one of the group. Vera was a spitfire times a thousand. You didn't cross her or question her without seriously regretting it. She had a kind side to her as well but to most people she hid it behind sarcasm and hand waves to avoid letting others know she was a super secret teddy bear.
"I'm going to take that as a compliment." Jack nearly shat a brick hearing her behind him. She was also one of the stealthiest damn people on earth who always showed up at the worst times. Theo didn't even hold back for a second as she crawled to her mother with a big grin on her face and a high pitched scream of excitement. "Hi baby." She picked up Theo making the little girl smile and giggle. Quickly she hugged Vera, resting her head on her mother's shoulder and looking a lot more content than she had the whole time with them. Okay, great, now she looked adorable again. "I hope Theo was good for you."
"Not really." Jack was honest, Vera could appreciate that. "But Maddox helped out a lot, I think I'd have been lost without him." Maddox was looking very proud of himself right now and really it made Jack feel good. He was happy he could do something for his little brother and really even Jack was proud of him. "But, she's a cute kid so it's forgivable."
"I know, it's a problem." It was made more obvious when Theo grabbed her nose and made Vera smile at her. It was weird for Jack to see her smile but she seemed so happy. At least that was good. Vera was a hard bitch but she deserved to be happy too. So did Hamish, as odd as the pair was Jack liked that they worked together so well. "Thank you for keeping an eye on them."
"You are welcome Grand Magus." Jack was just happy to be able to pass Theo off to someone she wasn't a total asshole to. Now he could go back to his dorm and just relax until he was called into temple, that or he could go hang out with Alyssa. Yeah, he was going to go with that last part.
