-The Strange Witness-
"Light, could you run through these papers and find everyone that has come in contact with a girl by the name of Misa Amane?" Ryuzaki leaned over Light's shoulder and pushed a folder in front of him, holding a plate in his other hand.
Light turned and gave him a warm smile.
"Of course, I want to find Kira as soon as possible."
"Mm, that's good." The sleep-deprived man walked over to his chair and sat down, pulling his legs up to rest against his chest. He stared straight ahead, his eyes focused on a picture of the girl he was having Light look into. He then glanced back to Light, wondering what route he would take.
Hm...I wonder...will he say not to go after her since it'll seem suspicious on our part, or will he assume that he's cleared of all suspicion and go after Misa on a whim? He's most likely hoping to gain my trust by putting on an act of 'not being Kira' just to try and throw me off. I've already seen the evidence, yet I still feel conflicted. Light's being too calm. This isn't how a normal person, let alone Kira, would act when being accused of something this serious... Hm...I'm just not sure... You certainly are a confusing person, Light Yagami.
"Hey, L?"
"Yes, Light?"
"I'm having trouble understanding why you'd want to arrest this girl. Sure, she seems strange and she was also in the area where you said the Second Kira would be meeting up with the real Kira, but I still don't see how you connected the dots to her and Kira."
Ryuzaki took a bite of his cheesecake and began to explain his thoughts.
"Well, you see, she was there during the incident in Aoyama and, even though we never had any useful camera footage, I still firmly believe that she is the Second Kira. I also think she has recently met up with the real Kira. Otherwise, why would the last tape the Second Kira made explain that they were giving up on finding Kira, and that they were thanking the police for all their help? Since it seems the Second Kira would do anything in their power to help Kira's cause, it's extremely unlikely that they would just give up on searching for him. This leads me to say that she is the only suitable suspect on our list that fits all of the minimum requirements."
"I see. I guess it does make sense when you put it that way."
L placed another spoonful of cake into his mouth, chewing as he spoke.
"Mm...I'm glad we're on the same page then."
"Yeah."
"So, will you help in Misa's apprehension?" Ryuzaki's eyes were staring right through Light's soul. He was testing Light's confidence, and Light knew this, yet he still played dumb.
"Are you absolutely sure that this girl is indeed the Second Kira? It's true that all of the evidence clearly points at her, anyone who didn't notice would be a fool, but still...she doesn't seem like the kind of person who would kill, criminal or not. It just isn't lining up with the facts."
"Hm...I agree. Although, you should know I've already concluded that she is the Second Kira. Am I correct in assuming this?"
Light gazed down, not wanting to make eye contact.
What is he thinking? If this girl really is the Second Kira, then she doesn't need a name to kill, just a face. That wouldn't be a problem for L since he never shows himself in public. However, if he continues chasing after Kira, then that may provoke Kira's copycat into killing him by any means necessary, which means I would also be in danger because of my closeness to L. I would immediately be listed as a threat and eliminated on the spot. Damn it! Get it together, Light!
He felt a light tap on his shoulder and looked over to see L staring at him with those same cold, blank eyes as before.
"Are you alright, Light?"
"Y-yes, I'm fine. I was just spaced out thinking about how we could successfully capture Kira, or at least lure him out."
Ryuzaki took another bite of his cake. "It just so happens that I was thinking the same thing."
"Oh, really?" Light was nervous, but there was no way he'd let L know that. Then he'd just be a suspect again.
"Yes, it seems that we always come to the same, or similar, conclusion about this case. You never will cease to amaze me, Light."
This sent a shockwave through Light's body. He felt warm, no...he felt hot, really hot.
I...amaze him? Wait, no! I can't get caught up in praises, I have to focus on finding Kira. Yet, L thinks I'm Kira, so there's no way to escape his forethought. I guess I'll just have to sit and wait.
He glanced over at L and noticed that he was staring at him, eyes unwavering. This was making Light very uncomfortable, in a good way, though. Although, he still didn't know why he wasn't wary of the man, nor why he was fine with him watching his every move.
Huh...? He's staring at me, but why? Does he suspect me again? No way, I've just been sitting here, there's no reason for him to think I'm Kira.
"Are you ok...Light?" Ryuzaki's voice remained calm even though he was extremely disturbed by his friend's behavior.
The brown-haired boy snapped out of his thoughts to answer L's question.
"Yes, I'm fine. Why do you ask?"
"I was just checking. Your emotions seem irregular and sporadic right now, so I was worried."
"Sorry, I'm just so caught up in this case. I didn't mean to worry you." He nervously chuckled as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Don't be sorry, I understand."
"Ok. Anyway, what do you think about this notebook that we found? It seems odd, suspicious even, so I'd be wary of it." Light explained without faltering.
L stared at the notebook placed in front of him. It was in a plastic bag now since one of the officers said that after he touched it, he saw a "Demon of Hell". Light didn't particularly believe the man, but he did deduce that the notebook was dangerous. No one was allowed to remove it, let alone open it. Although, L saw that as the only way fit to resolve the Kira case, and his reasoning was never wrong. He slowly lifted the bag containing the book, eyeing it as he unzipped the plastic zipper. The book was black, with metallic letters stretched across the front that read 'Death Note'.
Death Note? Hm...some sort of terrorist scheme, perhaps...no, to say the least, this isn't terrorism. This is an act of pure evil, only a person with sinister ideals would resort to using a book named 'Death Note'. The question is...would Light be that evil?
He slowly lifted the book out of the confines of the bag, still gazing at it warily. He also glanced around to see if he could spot the 'creature' that the officer mentioned. His eyes darted from every corner of the room, scanning to find the creature. Then, there it was, standing right in front of him. It really was a Demon. Ryuzaki's eyes widened as the creature stared him down. He then spun the chair back to the monitors and began typing.
"Hey, you ok? You look like you've just seen a ghost." Light tugged on the handcuffs slightly to gain L's attention.
"Mhm, but it's a Shinigami, not a ghost, nor is it a Demon; It's a God. It also looks to be 'attached' to me in a way."
"Attached?"
"Yes, it's hovering over me as we speak. Although, you most likely can't see it."
"Ah, so you've figured it out, huh?" The demon spoke in a scratchy, monotone voice, causing L to nearly fall out of his chair.
"I wasn't aware you could speak."
"Of course I can, Shinigami's aren't as primitive as you humans think we are. We just don't have technology like you do."
"Mm...so, what is this book?" L lifted the Death Note in front of the Shinigami.
"That's a Death Note. If you want to know how it works, just open the front cover and read the rules. Also, do you have any apples around here? I'm starving."
L cautiously opened the book, staring at Light as he did. The inside was just like any regular notebook, lines and paper, but this book had a secret. Ryuzaki's gaze slid to the list of rules that were engraved into the paper at the beginning of the book. He slowly read every single one of them aloud so Light could hear.
The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
If the cause of death is written within the next 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.
If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
The notebook shall become the property of the human world, once it touches the ground of (arrives in) the human world.
The owner of the note can recognize the image and voice of the original owner, i.e. a God of death/Shinigami.
The human who uses the notebook can neither go to Heaven nor Hell.
If the time of death is written within 40 seconds after writing the cause of death as a heart attack, the time of death can be manipulated, and the time can go into effect within 40 seconds after writing the name.
The human who touches the Death Note can recognize the image and voice of its original owner, a Shinigami, even if the human is not the owner of the note.
The person in possession of the Death Note is possessed by a god of death, its original owner, until they die.
If a human uses the note, a god of death usually appears in front of him/her within 39 days after he/she uses the note.
Gods of Death, the original owners of the Death Note, do not do, in principle, anything which will help or prevent the deaths in the note.
A Shinigami has no obligation to completely explain how to use the note or rules which will apply to the human who owns it unless asked.
A Shinigami can extend their own life by putting a name on their own note, but humans cannot.
A person can shorten his/her own life by using the note.
The human who becomes the owner of the Death Note can, in exchange of half his/her remaining life, get the eyes of the Shinigami which will enable him/her to see a human's name and remaining life span when looking through them.
A god of death cannot be killed even if stabbed in his heart with a knife or shot in the head with a gun. However, there are ways to kill a Shinigami, which are not generally known to the Shinigami.
The conditions for death will not be realized unless it is physically possible for that human or it is reasonably assumed to be carried out by that human.
The specific scope of the condition for death is not known to the Shinigami, either. So, you must examine and find out.
One page taken from the Death Note, or even a fragment of the page, contains the full effects of the note.
The instrument to write with can be anything, ((e.g. cosmetics, blood, etc.)) as long as it can write directly onto the note and remains as legible letters.
Even the original owners of Death Note, Shinigami, do not know much about the note.
You may also write the cause and/or details of death prior to filling in the name of the individual. Be sure to insert the name in front of the written cause of death. You have about 19 days (according to the human calendar) in order to fill in a name.
Even if you do not actually possess the Death Note, the effect will be the same if you can recognize the person and his/her name to place in the blank.
The Death Note will not affect those under 780 days old.
The Death Note will be rendered useless if the victim's name is misspelled four times.
If the victim's name was misspelled on purpose four or more times, the user along with the victim will die.
Suicide is a valid cause of death. Basically, all humans are thought to possess the possibility to commit suicide. It is, therefore, not something unbelievable to think of.
Whether the cause of the individual's death is either a suicide or accident. If the death leads to the death of more than the intended, the person will simply die of a heart attack. This is to ensure that other lives are not influenced.
"Interesting..." Light was dumbfounded by how many intricate rules there were to the Death Note, and L was still reading them off. Light had counted at least forty rules so far.
"Wait, Ryuzaki, did that rule just say that it was ok to give another person the book, and that that person would have the same powers to kill?"
"Yes, it says, 'You may lend the Death Note to another person while maintaining its ownership. Subletting it to another person is possible, too. This also allows the person in current possession of the note to trade for the eyes of the Shinigami.'"
Ryuzaki lifted his fork and stabbed it into the cake in front of him. He raised it to his mouth and pressed the sugary dessert to his lips in an almost teasing manner. Light couldn't stand it, L was so captivating when he ate sweets.
Maybe it's just me and my messed-up mind. After all, it's not normal to have feelings such as these...is it? No, of course not. Damn, he's so pretty though.
"Light, you're staring again."
"Sorry. I guess you're just too interesting, I don't want to look away."
"Is that so?" L stared at his food before taking another spoonful of the delectably arousing chocolate cake.
"It is. Why?"
"Oh, I was just curious. It seems I've been very curious since you joined this case. You've, how do I put this, you've inspired me." His eyes sparkled slightly. "Yes, that's the word, inspired."
How is he so calm while saying things like this!? Doesn't he know what he's saying is weird? Probably not, but still. Common sense would tell you to think before you speak. It's L, though, he never thinks. I don't even think his mouth has a filter, he just says whatever his mind does.
"Light, are you sure you're alright? You seem off."
"I'm sure. You don't need to worry about me, L."
Ryuzaki's eyes narrowed but quickly widened again. He lifted his thumb to his mouth and began parting his lips, ever so slightly. Light turned away and looked at the computer to distract himself.
He's nervous, but why? Does he sense that I suspect him...no, that wouldn't be it. Something else is bothering him. What is it, Light? What's wrong?
"Light, do you want some cake?" L reached over, grabbed a plate of strawberry cake, and offered it to Light before he could even respond.
"U-um, sure." He took the plate from the other's hand and placed it in front of him, staring at the strawberry atop the plentiful layer of icing; it looked sickeningly sweet.
"Do you need a fork?" When he didn't get a response, L took matters into his own hands. "Here, you can have mine." He leaned over and stuck the fork into Light's cake, which caused Light to snap back into reality.
"Huh?"
"You can use my fork to eat."
"O-oh, ok. Thank you."
"You're welcome."

Jeez! I've been exhausted! Yet I still manage to write this story...weird...anyway! I'm currently on episode 27 of Death Note. I cried so much during the end of the 25th episode. My poor Baby Panda! I am getting the Death Note in a little while though, so I can write Light's name in it. Even though Ryuk has already done that. Lol.
Ryuk: What's happening?
Light: She's planning on killing me with my own Death Note.
Ryuk: Is that possible?
Light: Yeah.
Ryuk: I wasn't aware of that.
Light: Apparently there's many things you're unaware of.
Ryuk: Ok, you got me.
Light: Heh, checkmate.
