Xiao Xingchen was convinced Song Lan would fall over the table and burn himself on the serving tray piled with food. His breathing was rough and erratic from drunken stupor. Song Lan slumped sideways. He stayed upright.

Song Lan watched him intently. "I bought a mirror after we separated." He clutched his cup, shaking his head.

"A mirror?" Xiao Xingchen questioned.

"A small, handheld mirror," Song Lan said. "A very clear reflection. And it gave me the best view in the world."

Xiao Xingchen's cup landed against his lips. Warmth swirled in his chest. He didn't dare echo the hope.

"Do you know why?"

"Why?"

He didn't know where he was headed with this story.. Hidden secrets swirled within the depths of Song Lan's eyes, though Xiao Xingchen only heard him hiccup.

"I clutch it in my hand before I sleep. Raise it to my face before my dreams fade. I stare at my reflection after I wake up for a long, long time. I keep dreaming." Song Lan paused, but his tongue was loose.

Xiao Xingchen's hand trembled.

"Your eyes are midnight shadow. Gleaming with star sparkle." Song Lan leaned against the low table and examined his bandages. He loathed the bandages – but his usual serious expression was wiped off for a goofy, nostalgic smile. "Brighter than the moon in my heart. A gentle heavenly breeze in the right direction. Guiding me to where I belong."

Xiao Xingchen reached out across the empty space.

"These eyes found you." Pain entered his voice. "I broke my promise. My plans stayed steadfast; you and I travel and cultivate together. These eyes needed to see you, because I couldn't bear I stained them with tears."

He found his empty, lonely hand on the table and cupped his fingers. "Let's share our dreams."
