Chapter 4: Digivolution - Part 1

Weiss sighed in content as she laid on her bed, feeling well rested despite the admittedly hectic couple of nights. The kind of rested that you never really wanted to wake up from.

"Weiss… Hey, Weiss..." a small and somewhat high pitched voice, like a little girl's, whispered to her from above. Weiss' brows knit together in slight agitation before relaxing again.

"Weiss… Weiss!" The blanchette's brows scrunched again at the voice.

"Ruby," Weiss groaned, turning to her left side, "I'm trying to sleep..."

"Uh, Weiss," her partner said off to the heiress' left. "That's not me."

Now confused, Weiss' eyes fluttered open and saw Ruby- in her school uniform- with Calumon on her head, the two looking at her from their shared desk. The white-haired girl blinked at the two before slowly turning towards where the voice from before had come from. She froze in place when she saw just who had spoken.

A small, light green Digimon hung from the bottom of Ruby's bed, nearly right above Weiss' head. Her body was wrapped in a mass consisting of twigs and bark that were compressed into a brown and spiky cocoon with her head poking out on top. The Digimon's head was round with a couple...were those ears or antennae? Her face consisted of two small, dark eyes and a pink mouth that went down vertically and jaggedly. Two small arms poked out from under her head and a brown vine sprouted from the top, which was allowing her to hang from the bed.

"Good morning, Weiss!" Minomon greeted her happily as she swung from side to side, like a pendulum.

Eyes wide, the heiress looked up at the Digimon in silent incredulousness before-

/~/

A few minutes before ~

Ren sat comfortably on his bed, waiting for the rest of his team to get ready for the school day to begin, since he had already woken up and gotten ready himself. He looked over the various settings of his DV-Scroll since he hadn't yesterday, just to see what was different and what had been kept the same. The 'non-caller mute' setting was still on and the past texts, contact numbers, and the videos and photos he kept weren't erased, which was good.

But what he took particular interest in the Digimon Analyzer app. What Pyrrha had said before, about how the Digimon Analyzer could be used to prepare for upcoming fights, was a good idea- except for one detail… His eyes narrowed at the screen, the normally stoic teenager deflated slightly, though most people wouldn't have noticed it.

"Hmm..." he hummed to himself. Tokomon- a small, round, cream-colored quadruped creature with a noseless face consisting of two black eyes, a pair of ribbon-like ear-antennae, and a curly, w-shaped mouth- looked up at his Tamer and turned back to the device, tilting his head-body in curiosity.

Nora (already dressed) closed the distance from her bed to his in a flash. Her Digimon partner's newly digivolved form, Babydmon- a green-colored seahorse-like dragon with purple eyes, black and magenta horns, a pair of diminutive wings, a dull yellow belly, and a tail made up of long, silvery hair- still struggled in her arm, but the effort was a lot more subdued compared to when Nora was first hugging him, having finally resigning to his fate.

"This is a bit much..." Babydmon sighed in exasperation. Ignoring him, Nora looked down at her partner with a tilt of her head.

"What's the matter, Renny?" she asked, knowing the subtle signs for when he was concerned. Ren spared a glance to his partner, before sighing himself.

"I was going through the Digimon Analyzer, but I'm afraid that Pyrrha's idea earlier may have been premature..." At hearing her name, the crimson-haired girl looked over from where she sat, already dressed and combing her hair. Her Digimon partner, Poromon- a spherical pink bird with blue eyes, a yellow beak, and a yellow-tipped red feather adorning her head- continued to preen her wing diligently.

"What do you mean?" asked Pyrrha.

"I've looked over the app at least three times now, and only the Digimon profiles that we had previously encountered after the Scroll's 'initialization' are available. Not even Calumon is on there."

"So, just our partners then?" asked Nora, to which Ren nodded.

"That's disappointing..." sighed the spartan girl. Poromon looked over at her partner, after finishing pruning her other wing to satisfaction. Hoping to distract her from feeling down, even for only a moment, the pink Digimon 'hopped' a little closer to her partner.

Looking up, she asked, "Pyrrha, do you mind helping me? I can't reach back there." Poromon turned slightly, showing how she couldn't reach the back part of her head-body, due to it being a head-body to begin with. Pyrrha, looking down at her, smiled.

"Of course," the ex-champion answered, picking the Digimon up and placing her on her lap before using her fingers to comb through the down-like feathers, since a hairbrush would be too large to use. Poromon hummed and closed her eyes, clearly enjoying the grooming.

Before either Ren or Nora could comment at the sweet display, Jaune, with his Digimon, stepped out of the bathroom fully dressed.

"Are you sure you don't mind that bowl?" the young knight again asked Bukamon- a Digimon that, although looking similar to Babydmon, had a vastly different appearance; he had a grey body with a white belly, a pair of flippers and blue eyes, a hairless tail, a tuft of red hair jutting off of the top of his head, and looked more saurian than dragonic overall- to which the In-Training Digimon rolled his eyes.

"For the last time, Jaune, yes," Bukamon answered.

"Isn't it a bit small?" Jaune continued, but the grey-colored Digimon merely shrugged.

"It's not like I'm gonna sleep in it. I just need to rehydrate once in a while." Jaune nodded at the logic, but he still thought he had to explain himself.

"It's just… Isn't it uncomfortable? I just figured that you'd want something a little bigger." Bukamon seriously thought it over for a moment before shaking his head.

"Well, I don't want you to spend your money on me if you really don't need to..."

"Oh c'mon," Jaune chuckled, "how much could a fish bowl cost?" Ren gave him a raised brow, but it was Pyrrha who answered him.

"Quite a lot, actually," the six other individuals turned to the spartan as she continued to groom Poromon. "A decent aquarium would cost around...maybe two hundred Lien?" And with that, Jaune's jaw dropped.

Pyrrha shuffled uncomfortably in her seat as he stared incredulously at her. "My father keeps an aquarium… He said that watching the fish swim around made him relax after a long day at work."

After a moment, Nora turned her attention back to their leader and asked, "Why couldn't you just share the shower or something?" Both Jaune and Bukamon put an appendage (a hand and a flipper, respectively) on their chins and nodded simultaneously, but before any of them could comment on the display, they heard a scream come from across the hall.

Looking at each other in alarm, the members of Team JNPR leapt into action, grabbing their weapons (that they had been maintaining last night before hitting the hay) and went next door.

/~/

Ruby, Blake, and- after just getting out of the shower- Yang looked at their teammate, who was on the floor after she had yelped in surprise and flopped there. Both Weiss and Minomon rubbed their heads; Weiss for when she hit the floor and Minomon for hitting her head on the underside of Ruby's bed in surprise at Weiss' reaction.

"The hell happened?" asked Yang, still fluffing her hair up until it was just right. Her partner, Gummymon- a small, light green Digimon with two dark eyes, a simple mouth with a pair of small fangs hidden inside, a pair of floppy ears, a single horn on his head, and whose body looked like a ruffled skirt- snickered on her shoulder.

"Looks like Minomon scared the crud out of her Tamer." Minomon glared daggers at him in turn.

"Pinecone!" Minomon called out, summoning a small, brown pinecone from her arms and chucked it at Gummymon in retaliation. The pinecone bonked the Slime Digimon on his head, but didn't actually hurt him.

"Hey!" Gummymon shouted before turning towards his Tamer, noticing that she was looking at him with a raised brow. He turned away from her and pouted. "I was just sayin'..." Weiss could only look from Minomon to Gummymon in astonishment, and finally noticed the Digimon in Blake's arms.

Budmon, a spherical green-colored Digimon that was covered in purple thorns, had a simplistic face consisting of a pair of squinted eyes and a small, smiling mouth with a fang sticking out from the side while a leaf jutted out from behind, but unlike Leafmon's tail, Budmon's leaf wasn't heart shaped.

"Wait..." Weiss said to herself out loud, "Then does that mean-"

"Yes," Blake said, "it seems like the Digimon digivolved during the night." Weiss turned to her own Digimon and paled at what she saw, but not at what Leafmon had become. Minomon was sitting on Wiess' mattress, detached from the bed above it, sulking.

"I scared Weiss..." the Larva Digimon sniffled to herself, tears threatening to well up in the corners of her eyes. "That m-must mean th-that Weiss hates me n-now-"

"No-no-no!" Weiss tried to backpedal. Yes, she was shocked that the cute leaf-tailed Digimon had become...well, what was essentially a giant talking bagworm, but a cute bagworm nonetheless. "I don't hate you! I just wasn't expecting you to change forms so soon; you only hatched yesterday!"

Minomon, with hope in her eyes, asked, "R-really? Pinky promise?"

Weiss blinked, since Minomon didn't appear to have any pinkies, but answered anyway, "Pinky promise." And with that, Minomon cried out 'yay!' in joy and leapt into Weiss' arms and hugged her chest. The heiress looked to her teammates, all of whom just shrugged.

Their attention was then directed to the door when they heard three knocks.

"Are you guys okay?" Jaune called out through it, "We heard someone yell and-" Ruby strode across to the door and promptly opened it. The members of JNPR and their Digimon blinked in surprise.

"Weiss just got startled," the red-hooded sniper began, earning a glare from her human partner. "So your Digimon changed, too?"

Jaune nodded and turned to Bukamon, who sat on his shoulder, "Yup, and yours?" Ruby nodded. Weiss, looking between the Digimon's now forms, decided to get her DV-Scroll out and checked the Digimon Analyzer and pointed it at Minomon first.

"But how did they digivolve so fast?" Weiss asked, getting up off of the ground with Minomon in her arms.

It was Calumon who answered her, "They did eat a lot of pizza last night..." Everyone remembered how their Digimon partners had devoured the food like they were starving predators, eating many more slices than the humans (and Faunus) thought that they could have eaten. They all nodded, accepting it as the reason.

"So Digimon digivolve if they eat enough?" asked Blake.

Poromon, shaking her head-body in Pyrrha's arm, answered, "Nope. Digimon normally digivolve if they have gathered enough energy. We changed forms because we gained enough energy from eating, but as we digivolve further, more energy is needed."

Bukamon continued, "It takes years for a Rookie level Digimon to digivolve normally, but with you guys, we can digivolve when we need to." Everyone let the information settle before Yang turned to the white-haired girl.

"Do you have any more questions, Weiss-cream?" the brawler asked.

"As a matter of fact, I do," answered Weiss, giving Yang a pointed look. "Why is everyone in their school uniforms?"

"Classes have started back up again," her partner replied. Weiss looked at her incredulously.

"Already?! Didn't Headmaster Ozpin give us a week off after what had happened after the dance?"

Jaune shrugged, "I guess he's changed his mind. We all got a school-wide emergency announcement on our Scrolls this morning." Weiss quickly opened the Contacts app on her DV-Scroll and almost immediately found the announcement. After reading through it, Weiss closed her eyes and let out a breath in annoyance.

"And why didn't anyone wake me earlier?" In her arms, Minomon looked up at her.

"I wanted to greet you this morning as you were waking up, Weiss," the Larva Digimon answered. Ruby scratched the back of her head nervously.

"I thought that it would look cute..." Blake and Yang merely shrugged in response. Sighing, Weiss walked over to the closet, picked up her school uniform and a light blue towel, and entered the bathroom- Minomon in tow- trying to get ready for the day.

"Is today just...going to be this weird?" asked Blake to nobody in particular.

Ren nodded and answered, "Most likely, yes."

/~/

And he was not wrong. Everything seemed like a normal day at Beacon...except for the obvious Goliath in the room. Or to be more precise, the Digimon. Everywhere the two teams went, the other students could only stare in confusion, shock, or suspicion at the newly arrived creatures.

As they ate their breakfast, the entire cafeteria was nearly dead silent, the only sounds were food being eaten (a bit loudly by the Digimon...and Nora) and the whispered gossip that was being spread by their classmates as they glanced conspiratorially at them. It was starting to get on most of the human's, and Faunus', nerves.

Ruby glanced around nervously, nibbling on some toast, and said, "Everyone's staring..."

Blake, looking up from her book that she was reading as she simultaneously ate her porridge before looking back down, saying, "It is a little distracting…" Budmon was munching on some hash browns next to her Tamer, sitting on the table.

In fact, all of the Digimon sat on the table, since the space between the seats and the table's surface was too great, and ate their breakfast like it might have been their last. Their plate of food was nowhere near as excessive as Nora's towering plate of pancakes, though, which she gladly shared with Babydmon.

Pyrrha, looking from Poromon- who was pecking at a bowl of freshly cut corn- to all of their classmates, sighed, "They could at least try to be more discreet about it..."

"It's best to just ignore them," counseled Ren, who was quietly sipping his morning tea as Tokomon devoured the turkey drumsticks on his plate with the ferocity of a wolverine, flashing his hidden fangs. Nora perked up a bit, about to say something, but Ren immediately shut her down, saying, "No," before taking another sip.

The energetic girl pouted at her best friend, mumbling, "I never get to break anyone's legs..." She then noticed how Babydmon was breathing a puff of sparkly cloud-stuff on his pancakes before eating it. Curious, Nora stole a forkful of his pancake and ate it testingly. Her eyes sparked in amazement. Whatever this stuff was, it was spicy, but it somehow made the pancake taste even better!

With renewed exuberance, she picked up her Digimon and asked, "Do mine, too!" Babydmon merely shrugged and breathed his Hot Steam attack on her pancakes, with the pair eating their breakfast with gusto after.

Yang, putting her half eaten BLT down- her eyes closed- before suddenly standing up, directing all of the attention to her. When she opened her eyes up again, they had become an angry red as her hair had a faint fieriness to it.

"If you want to look at us so badly," Yang growled loudly, "you should take a picture- it'll last longer!" The blondezerker slammed her hand onto the table (careful not to disturb her friend's or the Digimon's food) and looked at her fellow students in the eye challengingly. They quickly got the message and turned back to their own food, trying not to catch the girl's attention.

As Yang sat back down, Weiss gave her a glare while spoon-feeding diced berries to Minomon and said with clear sarcasm, "With you around, Yang, who needs subtlety?"

The pugilist shrugged, "It's a service I provide," and went back to eating her sandwich, earning a head shake from Blake. Most of the Digimon turned to Gummymon, maybe for an explanation, but he just 'shrugged' and went back to chewing on the piece of bacon that was partially sticking out of his mouth.

Classes were more or less the same, though their classmates had wisely decided to not gawk at the sixteen individuals quite so openly.

To give credit where credit was due, Professor Port didn't exactly seem fazed by the new arrivals. Sure, he blinked when he saw the Digimon, but he took the unusual circumstance in stride and started one of his long-winded stories, like he always did.

...Although, it did bring up some things that the teenagers hadn't been able to explain about Remnant to their Digimon…

"-And there I was, surrounded on all sides by the ferocious beasts…" the veteran Huntsman recounted, "I checked my ammunition; I had only a few shells left. Fearing it may have been the last hunt, I gave the nearest snarling Beowolf-"

Port could only blink as he had spotted one of the strange creatures that Ozpin had informed the entire faculty about as she raised a pink feathered wing. "Uh… Yes?"

The Tamers, as well as the students who hadn't fallen asleep, looked at Poromon curiously as she asked, "Professor, what's a Beowolf?" The rest of the Digimon looked on in interest, since they've never heard of the term before. The Tamers looked at each other in realization…

"Why," Port began, "Beowolves are a type of Grimm." That only seemed to confuse the Digital Monsters more.

"What's a Grimm?" Bukamon asked in turn. The Professor could only blink in response. He...never had to explain what Grimm were before.

"Grimm are..." Pyrrha tried to explain, though the words were escaping her at the moment. "They're creatures that...hunt down and kill anyone in their path, be it human or Faunus, young or old…" The Digimon, shocked at hearing this, looked at their respective Tamers and soon realized that the spartan wasn't lying or joking.

"They just...hurt people? Not 'cause they're hungry or mad or something?" asked Gummymon, which was answered by Yang shaking her head solemnly.

This visibly shook the Digimon; their kind usually fought for territory, food, or even to test their strength against one another. But an entire...class of beings that attacked people just because they could? It actually frightened them.

"But that's why we're here!" Ruby said with purpose, trying to reassure their new friends. "We're studying in order to become Hunters, to slay Grimm and save as many people as we can!" The Digimon seemed to calm down a little after hearing that, at least.

"Well put, Miss Rose!" Port said proudly, "That is precisely why we're here! To mold the young minds of today into the Huntsmen and Huntresses of tomorrow. My don't we show our...uh...guests here what that means." He motioned his hands towards the entryway that led to the lockers nearby. Ruby nodded and zipped down that way, eager to show off to the Digimon.

Confused, Tokomon asked Ren, "What does he mean by that?"

Ren smirked down at his companion, "Watch, and you'll see."

They didn't have to wait long, however, as Ruby entered back through the way she left, this time wearing her Huntress outfit and carrying Crescent Rose- in storage mode- on her back. Ruby unstrapped her weapon, and twirling it around as it mechashifted, finally rested the blade of the oversized scythe on the floor of the arena.

The Digimon could only blink blankly at the strange, contraption-ish weapon.

"I thought Ruby had a gun..." Calumon said, tilting his head and half-remembering the DarkTyrannomon fight since he was trying to watch while staying hidden, as Leomon had instructed.

Ruby grinned up at the small Digimon and explained simply, "It's also a scythe." The red-hooded girl nodded towards the Grimm Studies instructor, "Ready when you are, Professor." The old Huntsman nodded in turn and walked over to a cage where a strange growling was coming from…

Minomon's eyes grew when she figured out what was in the box… "Wait! There's a Grimm-thingy in there?!" The other Digimon turned from her towards the cage nervously, though Gummymon was giving it an admittedly adorable glare.

The Professor, wielding his blunderbuss-axe, said, "And let the match...BEGIN!" He swung and severed the lock keeping the cage closed, the door slowly creaked open. More a moment, nothing came out.

Then a long limb, tipped with a disturbingly human-like black hand for a paw, tentatively reached out to the floor outside of the cage. Ever so slowly, the Grimm revealed itself to the class, making several students gasp, recognizing it.

"A Skriker?!" gasped Weiss along with both Pyrrha and Ren.

Overall, the Grimm looked like a hybrid between a lizard, a rat, and a canine of some sort, and was around the same size as a medium-sized dog, too. The Skriker's body was impossibly gaunt, as if it went an entire month without eating, with the legs, arms, and torso looking pitifully thin and sunk in. It was virtually hairless, except for the black mane around its neck.

Each limb was long and sinewy, with both fore and hind legs ending in a human-like hand, if a little bony. A whip-like tail trailed behind it, twitching periodically, ending in a lump so it's strike had a little weight to it.

The bone white mask of the Grimm was in the shape of a rat's skull, but it's jaws were more like a crocodile's; medium sized teeth jutted out of the mouth and interconnected awkwardly, which seemed to add to it's feral-like appearance. Bone-like armor covered the Grimm's sides, appearing like a rib cage, the forearms and hands of both of the Skriker's front and hind legs, and halfway down the creature's tail, including the club-like lump at the end.

The Skriker hissed like a snake as it looked around. It gave a large hiss at Ruby before sending a glare towards the class, eliciting a shiver from the Digimon Tamers held them closer to comfort them.

"Uh..." Jaune stage whispered to his partner, "What's a Skriker?"

"One of the most elusive Grimm kinds of Grimm known," Pyrrha answered. "They almost never engage in direct combat, but what Skriker's do is mimic voices to lure unsuspecting people into an ambush or to cause a panic in order to attract more Grimm. They can mimic any noise, even if they have only heard it once."

Port gave a hearty laugh, saying, "Very good, Miss Nikos! Indeed Skriker's may not be the most powerful Grimm, but what they lack in strength, they more than make up for in guile and-"

But before the professor could finish, the Grimm whipped it's head towards him and made a series of noises that made everyone's blood run cold: Ports laugh from right before, a woman's scream, the cawing from what sounded like a murder of crows, and finally multiple gunfire.

The room had become so silent that you could hear a pin drop.

Successful in it's intimidation, the Skriker slowly turned its head, but stopped to gaze curiously at the Digimon, inherently sensing their fear.

The gaunt creature crept along the floor and Ruby tightened her grip on Crescent Rose. Suddenly, Ruby dashed towards the Grimm, determined to end the fight quickly.

Without any warning, the creature leaped into the air a good four feet, avoiding the scythe's blade immediately and lashed it's tail towards the young Huntress-in-training. Ruby propelled herself back with a gunshot while unbalancing the Grimm, since she had aimed the Burn Dust bullet towards where the Skriker was going to land.

The Skriker recoiled back, trying to avoid the searing-hot floor and Ruby took her chance, dashing via recoil towards the Grimm. But instead of rushing it head-on like last time, she moved slightly to the Grimm's right, preparing to strike.

The Skriker inhaled a breath so deep that the creature's chest bulged from the effort, before it released a horrifying, screeching sound. Everyone in the room had to cover their ears in order to lessen the noise, including Ruby, if only on instinct.

The gaunt Grimm took the opportunity and lashed it's tail around the haft of Crescent Rose, pulling the two towards each other. Landing on the weapon and holding on tightly, the Skriker proceeded to snap and claw at Ruby, trying to whittle down her Aura and making her panic.

Her teammates and friends looked in with concern, but they knew that she could handle herself. Seeing her sister struggle, Yang rose from her seat but didn't say anything, knowing that doing so could hinder Ruby more. Calumon, on the other hand, didn't.

"Ruby!" the white and purple Digimon called out, worrying about his new friend. Flashbacks of what happened with Leomon flashed behind Calumon's eyes, but he tried to ignore it…

Sensing the fear practically rolling off of the Digimon, the Skriker could help but face him, providing the distraction that Ruby needed.

The red-hooded girl fired her sniper-scythe, boosting herself backwards, and spun around. Losing its grip due to the distraction and the sudden momentum, the Skriker was launched away from her, though the elastic tail was still attached.

Ruby easily twirled her massive scythe like a baton, twisting the Grimm's tail in the process. Being pulled towards the girl, the Skriker clawed at the ground to try and get a grip on something, but-

*Shunk!*

The Grimm screeched as Crescent Rose's enormous blade sunk through it's back and into the floor, before finally collapsing and beginning to dissolve into the air. Panting a little, Ruby glanced up and saw at how the Digimon were all gapping at what they had seen.

Relieved, Calumon unfurled his ear-wings and flew to Ruby, giving the girl a flying glomp. Ruby hugged the little Digimon back, reassuring him that she was alright.

Professor Port walked up, clapping, and said, "Well done, Miss Rose! You may have panicked a little earlier, but you recovered quickly and exploited an opening without hesitation." Turning to the Digimon, he continued, "And that is what it means to be a Hunter; to fight these ferocious beasts, that threaten every man, woman, and child that is living, with determination and skill."

Port glanced at the time on his Scroll and turned back to the students, before continuing, "And it appears that class is just about over. Look over the assigned readings, chapters forty to forty-five. Class dismissed...and stay vigilant."

As Ruby, along with Calumon, skipped towards the exit that led to the locker rooms, the Digimon slowly looked towards their Tamers.

"Can you guys do that...speedy stuff, too?" Babydmon asked, to which Nora and the rest gave their Digimon grins.

"Not exactly," admitted Pyrrha, "but we each have our own powers that we can use-"

Jaune scratched the back of his head in both depression and nervousness as Bukamon jumped back onto his shoulder. "Well, not all of us..." Yang playfully punched her fellow blonde's arm. "Ow."

"You'll get your Semblance eventually, Vomit Boy," the pugilist teased. "In the meantime, you just need to practice." Seeing the Digimon's confused expressions, Blake decided to try and elaborate as they got up to leave the lecture hall.

"Jaune had his Aura unlocked fairly recently, and it takes people time to discover their Semblances." The Digimon looked at each other before looking back just as confused as before.

"We have no idea what you just said," Gummymon said, relaying their confusion. The Hunters-in-training all sweatdropped at hearing that. This might...take a moment to fully explain…

Meanwhile, deep in the Emerald Forest~

A black and magenta Digi-Gate slowly opened up…

...And a red carapace-clad arm reached out and gripped a tree, crushing it into splinters in the Digimon's claws. He growled mostly to himself as the insect-like Digimon looked around his surroundings.

Kuwagamon, after clacking his mandibles together in anticipation, unfolded his wings and lifted off into the air.

...To be continued.

I...have no idea if the Ruby vs Skriker fight was okay or not, so let me know if (and why) it sucked so I can try and fix it, lol. I think that I'm honestly better at describing Digimon fights than RWBY fights *shrugs*

Fun fact: The Skriker, in real-world folklore, is a kind of black dog-type of mythological creature that haunted Lancashire and Yorkshire, scaring the crap out of people by making strange noises.

I'm also using the school of thought that all Digimon already 'know what they need to know' as soon as they hatch, like what the four Attributes are, which one they have, what Digivolution is, what YGGDRASIL is, etc. That means the schools in the Digital World are to primarily teach the young 'mons morality and junk.

Constructive criticism is always welcome.

Do NOT repost or steal. That is rude!
