Chapter One - Let's Party
'Come on Lizzie we're going to be late' Katie yanked on Elizabeth's arm as she dragged her best friend through the grounds of UVA towards a house party. Elizabeth Adams was less than impressed by the motion from her friend but she reluctantly went along with her as Katie did not want to attend alone, what with some more senior boys rumoured to be going.
'Alright, calm down' She moaned as her feet hit the ground faster and faster 'what's the rush' Elizabeth groaned as she pulled her wrist free from Katie's grasp and furrowed her brow. Elizabeth was not interesting in the party and boys life style, she wanted to focus on her career and keep a clear, sharp mind for all of her studies, she was very much a level headed, no distraction kind of girl, much to all her friends annoyance.
'Commmmee on Lizzie' Katie giggled as she threw the bottle of vodka to her lips, swigging at the clear liquid and passing it to Elizabeth who shook her head profusely
'No, no nooo, nope. No. Not happening' she refused softly
'Just a bit! Look Lizzie' she paused and wrapped her arm around Elizabeth's shoulder as they continued to walk. 'Those boys who we watch training all the time-'
'The boys you watch' Elizabeth corrected her and Katie rolled her eyes, taking another swig of the vodka before carrying on.
'Fine, those boys I watch training, the ROTC ones? They will be there. You know that one keeps checking you out, he is totally into you, and he is kind of cute.' She winked
'Forget it Katie, I am not interested in Henry'
'Henry! Woah wait what? You know his name!' she almost squealed in delight as she caught her friends slip up.
'You know his name!' she repeated trying to process the information as she continued to freak out and tease her friend.
'Yes, ok I know his name. We had a coffee this one time, but…nothing happened' Elizabeth explained trying to keep her friends excitement to a minimal.
'You have his number! You went for coffee! When? How? Couldn't what? Why do I not know this?' her face fell and Elizabeth giggled a little at her friend's excitement for her.
'Correction, he has my number, and It was a few weeks ago during the holidays, you went home that's why you didn't know and when you can back it was old news by then' She shrugged it off
'Noo Lizzie, Nope. You're not getting out of it that easy' Katie laughed as the alcohol began to fuel her system. She looked at Elizabeth directly and tried not to burst with excitement 'Details!' she laughed and Elizabeth smirked attempting to hide her own laughter, but her eyes lit up giving her away.
'Fine, you are having the short version as I can see the house in the distance' Elizabeth warned and continued to walk arm in arm with her closest friend. 'Ok so, I headed into town to get myself one of those spiced latte's and Henry was in the que before me, we had bumped into one another before that and the conversation was awkward and well,' Katie nodded eagerly awaiting the rest of the story. 'he then recognised me and said 'hey you're that girl who sits with that girl who stares at us' Elizabeth's joked as her eyes widened, glancing at her friend watching as Katie's mouth fell.
'He did not say that!' she was shocked and Elizabeth laughed shaking her head
'No he didn't, but you're so easy to wind up'
'Don't change the subject Adams! I want details'
'There are no details, we flirted a little and I gave him my number but he never called' she smiled simply as the memories of Henry came flooding back into her mind.
'Wait, you asked him for his number and he didn't call you?' Katie rolled her eyes 'Boys' she moaned.
'Yes I asked him, I don't know why. I guess I really liked him and wanted to see him again. But as I said he was hesitant and then I didn't hear from him so that was that…' she smiled awkwardly.
'That was that? Bu-'
'It doesn't matter, we're here now' Elizabeth cut Katie off as they arrived at the house party. Elizabeth's eyes moved towards the house wanting to avoid eye contact with Katie. She re adjusted her skirt and plastered a false smile across her face. With a tug of the arm Elizabeth dragged Katie towards the small crowd gathering and into the house. She glanced over her shoulder to smile at Katie and roll her eyes
'Don't pout, I'll tell you the rest tomorrow ok? Let's just have fun now we're here'
'Oh now you want fun, moments ago you didn't even want to come!' Katie winked and nudged Elizabeth playfully.
'Arhhh Ladies!' James, one of the ROTC boys greeted them as he staggered towards the front door. 'My, my my Kaite… look at you' he winked and took her hand bending down to kiss it softly, something which made Katie squeal. Elizabeth giggled at her friend, she was truly a hopeless romantic and a sucker for a ROTC boy. She nodded and gave the go ahead for her friend to leave her and go and spend time with James. Elizabeth watched as they walked out into the garden, sighing heavily to herself as she really didn't want to be here.
'We're just about to play spin the bottle it's not that bad of a party'
'Henry!' she gasped as she turned to face him.
