Let's Meet Again
"Emma?" Norman asked as he peeked inside the main bedroom where they and their siblings all slept.
Sure enough he found the young girl sitting on her bed, looking at her feet.
"Emma?" he called again, this time making her jump and look up with wide eyes.
"O-Oh! Norman! What's up?" she grinned but Norman wasn't fooled and shook his head.
"I think I should be the one asking you that." he stated, moving to sit down next to her.
"Are you okay?" he asked. "You've been pretty quiet ever since Amelia left yesterday."
Emma was silent for a moment before sighing.
"I guess I'm just a little sad is all..." she admitted, making Norman frown.
While it was true that everyone was always sad to see one of their beloved siblings go, Emma had never let it bring her down like this.
"Emma... What's going on? I know you love everyone but you have never gotten this upset when someone has gotten adopted." he pointed out.
"Yeah, I know." Emma agreed before unexpectedly leaning against his shoulder.
Norman tensed up at the action as his cheeks turned red but didn't make a move to push her away.
Emma sighed again.
"It's just that... Before Amelia said goodbye to everyone I was helping her with her hair and all and she then said something."
"What did she say?" Norman asked curiously because he couldn't imagine anyone from their family saying anything mean in their lasts moments with them.
"She said... She said that she was nervous to leave and for what her live was gonna be like." Emma explained and he nodded.
It was common for the orphans to worry about how they were gonna end up but they trusted their mother to find good new parents to take care of them and figured they'd be just fine.
"Then she asked me if I was nervous too." she added and Norman frowned, suddenly understanding what was going on.
No matter what, whenever someone had turned twelve they'd ended up getting adopted and Emma had recently turned ten, meaning she had less than two years left here.
That is, if she didn't get adopted sooner.
Him and Ray even less considering they were a few months older than her.
"Are you nervous?" he asked carefully.
Emma answered with a shrug.
"Not about what's going to happen after I leave this place considering people I'll meet or things I'll have to do." she said and Norman leaned a little closer, knowing she wasn't done.
"I'm more worried about leaving this place itself. I-I- I don't want to never see you again! What if I end up forgetting you!" she looked up at Norman with tear-filled green eyes.
"Hey, hey, easy! That's not gonna happen!" Norman told her firmly.
"How can you be so sure? All our siblings seem to have forgotten! We never get any letters or any other hints that they try to contact us!" she whimpered, a tear slipping but Norman quickly brushed it away.
"Because I know you!" he lightly shook her before taking a breath to calm himself and smiling tenderly.
"Emma, I know that you love every single member of our family more than anything. You'd never forget us." he told her and she finally smiled back.
"That's true, I guess." she nodding.
"And while I can not really speak completely for the rest of our family, I know at least I won't ever forget you. I won't allow myself to." he added a little nervously but calming down as Emma beamed at him.
Then she looked down again.
"Still, I'll miss you." she said softly and silence fell over them.
Norman agreed wit her.
He would miss her so, so much.
He didn't want to have to miss her.
"Let's meet up." he said, breaking the silence.
"Huh?" Emma looked up.
"Let's meet up again after we get adopted!" Norman repeated, starting yo get excited. "I'm sure we can so it! We can use the internet and social media that we heard about and try to find and contact each other again!"
"You really think we can do it?" Emma asked, leaning closer and he nodded.
"Sure we can! After all, when we put our minds to something we've always been fine!" he said and now Emma grinned too.
"Right, as long as work together we can manage everything!" she fist-pumped the air and Norman laughed, glad to see she was back to her usual cheerful self.
Then Emma held out her hand to him.
"Let's make a promise, Norman. Just between us." she said and he smiled and tenderly grasped her hand in his.
"Alright. I promise I'll never forget you." he said with all his sincerity.
"I promise I'll do my best to find you again." Emma said back and he could see the honesty in her eyes.
"I promise I'll meet your again." they said together as aquamarine blue met emerald green.
Norman was about to let go of her hand when Emma caught him of guard again by suddenly throwing herself at him, hugging him with enough force to knock him back.
"Emma!"
The girl in question giggled at being called out.
"I'm really happy to have you in my live, Norman."
"Eh?" he blinked, feeling butterflies in his tummy at her words.
"And I'm glad that no matter what, I won't loose you!" she added.
Norman sighed happily at that and carefully hugged her back. "I'm glad to have you in my live too."
Suddenly the door opened, revealing Ray.
"Emma, Norman, it's almost time for dinner and-" the boy spoke before stopping as he caught sight at the scene in front of him.
"Ray!" Emma greeted cheerfully, not at all bothered while Norman was terribly embarrassed at being caught in such a position with the girl.
If Ray had cared about their position he didn't show it and simply pointed a thumb over his shoulder.
"Look, I couldn't care less why you two are doing but we all have kitchen duty and if we don't serve everything in time Lani and Thoma are gonna try to steal stuff from the pantry again. Get a move on." he said and with that turned to leave.
"Hey, Ray! Norman and I just made a promise! Guess what it's about! "Emma got off of Norman and skipped after the dark-haired boy.
"I told you I didn't care, didn't I?"
"EHHH?! You're so mean, Ray!"
As their bickering slowly faded away Norman found the strengt to sit up.
Heart beating wildly in his chest he looked down at his hand.
The hand he used to shake Emma's and make their promise to meet again.
He smiled to himself.
It would be hard to find each other again after leaving Grace Field.
They might end up living very far away, maybe even different countries.
Still, the smile Emma had given him would make it more then worth all the effort.
He'd find a way to meet her again.
And then...
Then he'll finally tell her his feelings...
"Norman!"
"I'm coming!" he got up from the bed and rushed to join his family.
