Just as the rats are about to strike, a man intervenes and stops them.
"Come on, get with ya!" The man shouts, waving a newspaper to disperse them.
The man kneels to a closer level to view Chip and Dale.
"Are you two, alright?" The man asks.
Chip and Dale nod their head simultaneously.
"I-I think so. We were heading home. To that tree over there," Chip points to the tree as he trembles his words slightly.
The man lowers his hand and opens the palm of it."Mind if I give you a lift." The man generously offers.
Chip and Dale are hesitant but accept. The man then stands back up and starts walking towards the tree.
"S-Say, wait a minute, you can understand us?" Dale says in a perplexed expression.
The man stops and pauses for a moment. He then looks down at Dale.
"You're right; I can. Wow, learn something new every day." The man says.
"Thank you for saving us, sir," Chip says.
"Oh, it's nothing. I'm just happy to help." The man says
They then arrive at the treehouse.
The man raises his hand to the branch. "Well, here we are." He says.
Chip and Dale step off the branch.
"Chip, I don't feel safe staying here tonight. What happens if they come back?" Dale says in a concerned tone.
Before Chip could respond, the man intervenes.
"You know, if you'd like to stay with me for tonight to make sure you're safe, you can." He offers.
"Well, that's a nice offer and all, but I don't know." Chip says hesitantly.
Dale turns and pleads with Chip. "Please, Chip. Just for tonight?" He pleads.
Chip sighs. "Oh, alright." He coincides.
The man places his hand back out. "Well, come on then, let's get you two somewhere safe for tonight." The man says.
The man then walks back to his car—a 1989 Cadillac Brougham in candy apple red.
"You two can sit together on the passenger seat." The man says.
"Thanks." Chip and Dale said.
The man starts the car and inserts a cassette tape. Hard Workin' Man by Brooks and Dunn starts playing. The tires squeal slightly as the man accelerates away.
The man turns the volume knob down. "I'm Dave, by the way," Dave says.
Chip extends his arm. "I'm Chip, and this is my brother, Dale." Chip says, shaking Dave's index finger.
"Nice to meet you, Chip, and Dale," Dave says, resuming focus on the road.
"So, you're a fan of this genre." Chip comments.
Dave scoffs. "Yeah, I guess you could say that," Dave says
"I've never listened to this song before," Chip says.
"You listen to music?" Dave questions.
"Yeah, Dale and I have a cassette player in our room." Chip explains.
"I'm impressed. For rodents, you seemed fairly advanced." Dave compliments.
"We try to be," Chip says.
Dave pulls up at his house in Eastchester and parks his car in the driveway.
"Where are we?" Dale asks.
"Home. Well, my home, at least. Come on; I'll show you two inside." Dave says, offering the palm of his hand.
Chip and Dale step onto Dave's hand. He proceeds inside and sets them down on the couch in the living room.
Dave sighs. "Well, it's not much, but hopefully, you two are comfortable here for tonight. I'll have to drop you two off early tomorrow. I have my family coming over for Thanksgiving." Dave explains.
"We understand, Dave. Thank you for generously taking us in for the night." Chip says.
"Eh, don't worry about it. It's the least I could do, especially since you two seemed to be in a tough situation with those rats. Anyways...I'll bring you two some blankets and a pillow." Dave says.
Moments later, Dave returns with a normal-sized comforter and pillow.
"Yeah, they're not your size, but hopefully they'll do the job," Dave says
"Thank you, that should be just fine," Chip says.
Dave lays the pillow on the right end of the couch and lays out the blanket. Chip and Dale yawn, and they get underneath the blanket. Dave turns to leave but hears a commotion between Chip and Dale. He returns to check on them.
"I'm sorry, Dave, I don't have a book on me." Chip said.
"What's the problem?" Dave asked.
"Oh, it's nothing." Chip said.
"Well, it surely can't be nothing," Dave said.
"I asked Chip if he had a storybook on him," Dale said.
Dave smirks. "You'd like a story read to you? He questions.
The red-nosed chipmunk nods enthusiastically.
"Well then, you're in luck. Let me grab my reading glasses." Dave said.
Dave returned with a book and his glasses moments later. He sits down on the left side of the couch and opens the book.
"What book is it?" Dale asked.
"This is a book passed down through my family. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Dave explained.
Dale snuggled into Chip as Dave began reading the first chapter. The two yawned and attempted to remain awake, but as Dave pressed on, the two fell into their slumber and drifted peacefully asleep. Shortly following this, Dave stopped reading and turned the light off and headed up to bed. Everything was peaceful for the rest of the night.
