"Dean, I saved you a seat," Josie shyly called out as she patted the empty space beside her.
Sam smiled at the uneasy look his brother shot him. "Aww. Looks like someone has a not so secret admirer," Sam whispered. His smile grew at the hushed, "Ah, man. Shut up," Dean mumbled.
"Nah., I have to say I agree with the runt," a voice from behind them had them turning around.
"Caleb," Sam shouted as he propelled himself into the older man's arms, "What are you doing here?"
Caleb smiled; a Sammy hug always made him smile. "I need a reason to come and see my favorite nephew?"
"No, it's just that dad told us your last job wouldn't be over for a couple days. Guess you got finished earlier than you'd thought," Sam asked.
"Guess so," Caleb answered than turned his attention to Dean. "Guess it's a good thing to or I would have missed this. How is Johnny doing," Caleb asked sensing Dean felt the implication in the question.
"He's good," Dean answered as he sat next to a beaming Josie, "He mentioned something about heading to Sonoma Springs for a couple days. He'll be glad to know you were able to make it sooner than you thought. How'd you know we'd be here."
"Saw you two getting on the bus as I was heading toward your house. Thought I would follow you. Remember your dad mentioning something about this," Caleb left the statement hanging and could tell that Dean knew he knew they shouldn't be there.
The ride took five minutes, but to Dean it felt like a lifetime as Josie sat talking to him the whole time. He learnt, in that five minutes, more about Beanie Babies than he ever really cared to know. He glared at Caleb and Sam while they quietly laughed, neither of them wanting to hurt Josie's feelings.
Unfortunately, Tucker didn't feel the same. "Well, will you look at that," he laughed, "Dean's got himself a girlfriend." Tommy, Tyson and Chip laughed until Miss Carlson spoke up.
Josies eyes showed the embarrassment she felt and they began to fill with tears. Dean could see her pulling into herself and he silently cursed Tucker. He wasn't sure what he should do. He didn't want to do something that would embarrass her more or give her the wrong idea, but he couldn't stand to see her hurt.
"Don't listen to him," he said as he looked her in the eyes, "he's just jealous that he doesn't know what you do about Beanie Babies." He gave her a wink and bumped her on the shoulder with his. She smiled at him and relaxed a little. The tractor pulled up to the entrance of the orchard and they group climbed down and headed out to pick their apples. Dean lagged behind with Caleb so they could talk.
"Caleb, look," he started but found himself cut off.
"What were you thinking? You know your dad said no to this little trip. You know the trouble you've gotten yourself into here," Caleb asked.
"Well, I was hoping he wouldn't find out. You don't have to tell him. Do you," Dean asked his voice pleading.
"Hey, you can't expect me to lie to the man, Dean," Caleb answered then smiled, "of course if he doesn't ask, I don't have to offer."
"Thanks. You didn't hear Sam. He's having a real hard time right now. Sounds like he's getting teased a lot about being different and being able to do something normal like this….well, it..it just meant a lot to him."
"I get it. I do. But this puts me in a tight spot with your dad. If he finds out about this it's not just your ass on the line it'll be mine too. Now what you say we go have some fun and worry about the rest later." Caleb took off at a faster pace so he could catch up to Sam and the other kids. The smile he saw on Sam's face as Caleb picked him up so he could reach a couple apples that were on a higher branch.
Dean felt someone tug on his hand and he looked down to see Josie standing there her basket already full. She looked at him and timidly asked him if he would like an apple. Tucker snickered as he walked by once again causing Josies eyes to tear up. Dean accepted the offered apple, gently took Josie by the hand and lead her to the rest of the group.
"Caleb, hey can I talk to you for a sec," he asked as he walked far enough away not to be heard but still close enough to be able to keep an eye on the kids.
"What's up," Caleb asked sensing the younger man's frustration.
"Tucker. That's what's up. You want to help me teach that little shit a lesson," Dean asked his eyes going cold and hard.
"What you have in mind," Caleb asked his eyes taking on a mischievous glint.
"How about the great pumpkin," Dean answered.
"Ok, when," Caleb asked.
"When we hit the corn maze. It'll be just like that time back in Richland."
