Hi everyone! It's been a while since I've written anything and since my last story was that of Brendan and May growing up together I want to try to tell the story of the Dawn and Lucas growing up together as well based on the anime. It's been years since I finished my last story so I might be rough around the edges. Also I could not think of a better name for this story so I guess it will be the Sinnoh counterpart of my other story. Hope you enjoy!
Chapter 1: The New Kid in Class
The cool mid-September wind blew through the branches of the large trees that had already begun to lose their green coloring in favor of brighter ones. The Sun was beginning to rise over the mountains that surrounded the rather small town of Twinleaf. It was always a spectacular sight to see the sun slowly rising over the mountains each morning and seeing it set in the evenings.
There in a large house near the town's outskirts, a woman could be seen opening the door and stepping into the front porch. She had a small frame with pale skin, large dark blue hair, and dark blue eyes. She was wearing her usual clothing of a long-sleeved white shirt, knee length jean shorts, and an orange apron that was tied around her waist. The women stretched her arms above her head as she observed the sun rise over the mountains. A cat like pokemon was seen following her and the pokemon jumped onto the white wooden frame of the porch.
"You really like seeing the sunrise don't you Glameow?" the women asked the pokemon. She moved to give the feline a couple scratches on the head which caused the pokemon to purr.
"I guess it's time to wake up Dawn. She wouldn't want to be late on her day back to school now would she?" She had asked the pokemon.
The pokemon had provided a nod in response.
The woman made her way back indoors while the glameow followed behind her. She closed the door once the pokemon was inside and started heading upstairs to her daughter's room.
However, as she made her way up, she couldn't help but notice the family picture that stood above the fireplace. The picture contained a young blue haired girl that was at most 5 years old, the mother as well as the father.
The woman smiled at the picture, remembering the fond memories that the picture brought. Unfortunately, neither she nor her daughter had seen him in a long time since he was currently working in a different region.
She nodded her head and lightly slapped her face to bring herself out of her trance and continued making her way upstairs. She reached a door where the name 'Dawn' was spelled out in dark blue letters and reached for the doorknob.
The open door revealed a room where a blue haired young girl was sleeping on a light pink pillow and covered with a green blanket. There were multiple pokedolls placed on not only the bed but also the room as they were lined across her dresser and desk.
The mother made her way to the sleeping girl where she nudged her in an effort to wake the girl up.
"Dawn… Dawn…" she spoke in a soft motherly voice.
The girl rolled over and covered herself in the blanket making sure to grunt in disapproval.
"Mom it's way too early for this," she spoke in a tired voice.
"Oh come on sweetie. You wouldn't want to be late for your second term of school now would you?" the mother asked.
When no response came from the girl the mother could only sigh. She knew her daughter would have to get up sooner or later yet sometimes it could be difficult waking her up in the morning.
"Come down once you're ready. Breakfast will be ready," she said a soft voice before she exited the room.
Once the door closed, Dawn rustled in her bed for another minute thinking to herself. Geez why does she have to wake me up so early. After all it's just school I'm going to. It's not like I'm meeting someone important. Her thoughts were interrupted as a furry spring like tail brushed up against her nose causing the girl to sneeze. She hadn't realized that her mother's glameow had been present in the room.
"Go away Glameow," she commanded. Pushing the feline away.
She was still sleepy, so she was not ready to have interactions with the feline so early in the morning.
The pokemon didn't follow the girl's order as it kept brushing its tail against the girl's nose causing her to sneeze once again. The girl unfortunately made the fatal mistake of the grabbing the pokemon's tail which only caused the pokemon to lash out her claws and give her a scratch across the face.
From downstairs the mother could hear a loud thump followed by a loud 'GYAAAAA.' She could only shake her head in amusement knowing that her daughter had once again grabbed her Glameow's tail.
After a couple of minutes, she had finished making breakfast and set the plates on the table. Shortly after the girl came in dressed in her school uniform, or rather what she liked to wear as a uniform. Since their school didn't have a strict dress code, the students were able to wear what they wanted as long as it adhered to the guidelines. Dawn was wearing a short yellow skirt along with a long sleeve pink shirt with a white collar. She also wore white knee length socks and orange shoes.
"Mom can you please tell Glameow to stop scratching my face?" Dawn complained.
"Well Dawn you should not be grabbing her tail like that then," her mother joked.
Dawn sighed, making her way to the table. The mother daughter pair were watching a television show about a contest that was held in Hearthome city just the day prior.
"Isn't she just beautiful Dawn?" the mother asked.
The person on stage holding a light blue ribbon was a woman that had long dark blue hair and dark blue eyes similar to the ones of the Dawn's mother. What made her stand out was not only her long beautiful blue hair but also her white beautiful dress. The two Pokémon standing beside her also aided in helping her presence stand out.
Johanna had informed Dawn that the white birdlike pokemon was a Togekiss while the smaller pink mammalian Pokemon with the bows was a Sylveon.
"There you have it folks. Maria has officially won her fifth ribbon and will have the right to participate in this year's Grand Festival!"the announcer exclaimed.
Dawn looked over at the trophy case at the other side of the room where a large golden cup lay at the top with five ribbons adorning the cup and the handles.
"Don't you think she's just incredible? Being able to participate in the Grand Festival while also being a gym leader?" Johanna asked.
Dawn could only smile and offer a nod in return.
For as long as she remembered, it was her dream to someday follow in the steps of her mother and obtain the title of Top Coordinator. She always envisioned her older self-standing on the podium while holding the large golden cup of the festival, waving to the crown with her pokemon and thanking everyone who had helped her along the way.
"I wanna be like that one day," Dawn said in an awed voice. The program had just concluded, and Dawn began to change the channels to find something new to watch. What followed was a volley of messages as the girl flipped through the channels.

Dawn's attention was drawn away from the tv when her mother asked if she was ready to head out. "Want me to walk you to school today?" Johanna asked.
Since the walking distance from their house to the school was at most ten minutes, Dawn would sometimes walk alone. She would often meet up with her friends Kenny and Leona on her way there and the three would be involved in antics until reaching the school.
"Yeah, thanks mom," Dawn said. After another moment, Dawn had grabbed her red backpack from upstairs and was now all set to leave for her school trip. Her mother was already by the door waiting for the girl.
The pair exited the home to be greeted by the cool morning air. Since it was early in the morning many of the townspeople were still in their homes while only a few were seen setting up their businesses around the town.
On their walk to school, Dawn would always be intrigued by a large home that wasn't too far from her own. The home kept the same aesthetic of the town but was much larger than any of the other homes in town. She didn't know much about it since it was newly built and if it wasn't for some certain structures in the home she would not have given it so much attention.
From her window Dawn would often see both men and women dressed in black and white attire walking around the place and tending to the gardens, or the pokemon, or just cleaning around the outside of the house. Dawn had also noticed that there were multiple people inside what looked like a giant glass home tending to plants. She had also noticed many flat grid like structres covered the roof and many large fans placed outside that turned when the wind blew.
"Dawn you always seem captivated by that house," Johanna said, noticing Dawn's stare at the home.
"Do you know the people that live there mom?" she asked.
"Well… Dawn… maybe. I'm not so sure myself. I've never really met the people that live there. I've just heard that they're really nice people, although they're not seen too often outside. I think I may have seen the owner of the house out once."
"Oh, were they nice people or were they meanies?".
Johanna chuckled at this statement before responding. "Well Dawn, I'm sure that they are good people, perhaps they are just shy around the place. Maybe they will warm up after a while."
Dawn nodded and noticed out in the garden of the home a boy dressed in semi formal attire, like that of school uniform, looking quite upset from her point of view. Dawn didn't get to see his face as his head was down and an older lady placed a hand on his shoulder and said something that Dawn could not hear.
Dawn wanted was intrigued and wanted to keep looking, but she was soon distracted by the sounds of many children. As it turned out, many children were walking with their parents to the school in same direction as Dawn and her mother. When the schoolgrounds were in sight, Johanna dropped Dawn off and say she would come in the afternoon to pick her up. She waved a final goodbye before heading back home.
Dawn continued walking and the sound of playing children grew louder with each step. When she finally reached the playground, there were already many children outside playing while many parents watched. Before Dawn could even make it to the swings, she felt something hit her back and lost her footing.
Dawn had nearly fallen to the ground headfirst as she was tackled from the back by her friend Leona. She saw that Kenny was following behind her.
"So Dawn are you ready for our next term? You did your summer homework right? I hear there's a new student joining in today," she said a rushed voice.
"Leona come on give her some space," Dawn heard Kenny say.
"Aww fine then."
"Well it's great to see you Leona and to answer your questions no,yes and no," Dawn pointed out with her fingers.
"Oh come on Dawn it won't be that bad. Hey perhaps we can make friends with that new student?"
"How do you even know about that?" Kenny asked.
"I heard some teachers talking about a new student joining our class. Maybe it will be another girl so we can have three girls in our group."
After playing around in the playground for a good half hour, a whistle from one of the supervising teachers blew and that meant that it was time for the students to head to their class.
The pair of three walked down the halls while still discussing the subject of the new student.
"Oh come on, I would prefer if it was another boy."
Dawn laughed at her friend's interactions before noticing a boy that stood out in terms of clothing considering that what he was wearing was more akin to a prestigious school. The boy was wearing a long-sleeved white dress shirt which was underneath a navy-blue sleeveless sweater along with a black tie. He also wore black shorts along with black socks and black dress shoes. Dawn also noticed that he was carrying a white backpack with dark blue borders on the back. The boy was standing outside of their class and Dawn guessed that he just had to be the new student. She suddenly came to the realization that the boy outside of her class was the same one that she saw standing in that home's garden that morning.
She noticed this time around his hair color. The boy had dark gray messy hair that appeared to be almost black. As his head was down reading a book, Dawn did not get to see his facial features again.
She wanted to introduce herself but was quickly motioned to enter the room by their teacher. Even Leona and Kenny gave the boy a glance of curiosity until their teacher motioned for them to enter the classroom as well. As they were entering, they heard their teacher telling the boy to stay outside for a little while.
As everyone was getting settled in, Dawn managed to snatch a seat in the back and against the wall. Kenny sat in front of her while Leona sat to Dawn's right. The bell rang shortly after signaling the beginning of class.
Their teacher made a short speech welcoming them back to another term and saying that he hoped everyone did their summer homework. Of course, this caused a couple grunts to be heard around the class while the teacher laughed it off.
"Now that's taken care of, why don't I introduce the new student that will be joining us today."
The class perked up at the prospect. It was not every day that a new student would be joining their class after all. Twinleaf was a small town after all and the closest training school was the one in Sandgem Town, which was also a small town. If one wanted to find many more schools they would have to travel to the big cities such as Jubalife, Hearthome and Sunnyshore.
"And with that I would like introduce someone. Come on in," the teacher said.
The door slowly opened to reveal the same boy that Dawn had seen standing outside of the classroom. He made his way to the front of the class where the teacher handed him a dry erase marker. The boy blankly stared at it before the teacher whispered something in his ear. He blushed slightly in embarrassment, but nodded and took the marker, writing his name on the whiteboard behind him. Dawn noticed that his handwriting was rather neat, especially when compared to that of the other boys in class.
Well to be honest her handwriting was also messy as well. But her penmanship had been improving day by day.
The name on the board read 'Lucas Diamond' and the boy turned back around to give the marker back to the teacher and face the class.
"Go on and introduce yourself. Don't be shy," the teacher encouraged the boy. He placed an encouraging hand on his shoulder.
The boy nodded before beginning his introduction.
"Hello, my name is Lucas Diamond, it's nice to meet everyone," he said in a quiet voice. Dawn noticed how his eyes were a similar dark blue to hers and got to see his facial features.
"Lucas just moved to Twinleaf from the big city and this will be his first-time attending school so please show him the ropes and be nice. Lucas if you don't mind there's an empty seat by the window," the teacher said. He pointed over to the window.
Lucas nodded and made his way to his seat.
Dawn was intrigued by this new student and wanted to learn more about him.
To be completely honest, I wrote this chapter before I finished my first story but I lost all the data on my old computer and stumbled upon my first drafts for this story and decided to give writing fanfics again. if you've read my other story you may have noticed that I made a couple of references to Lucas in that story.
I feel like I may have placed a couple too many anime tropes in here. See if you managed to spot them all. The ones that I put on purpose include: a new student, sitting by the window and a single parent. Although I have noticed that in most anime parents don't seem to exist. I always wondered why that is.
For anyone wondering, I based the school year here on the Japanese school year since Sinnoh is based off Hokkaido. In Japan, students start their year in the spring, have summer vacation and return for their second term around September.
