Omni – Avengers

Book 1: Heroes

Chapter 2: Assemble? Part one

"You know that old saying, never meet your heroes? Well, I did. And it. Was. Awesome!... …At least that's how it started."

In a long desert canyon, Utah

Deep in the middle of a long desert canyon, void of any life whatsoever. You'd think that there wouldn't be anyone strolling around in a place like this. Well you would be wrong.

Resting on a short ridge just above a little creek, was a teenage girl wondering through the lifeless canyon in search of something. This girl had a caramel-like complexion, black wavy hair that touched her shoulders, and a slim yet athletic figure. She wore a black t-shirt with a lightning bolt in the centre and a white, elbow-length sleeve top underneath. She also had a gold bracelet attached to her left arm, wore grey shorts that went just below her knees, blue lace up shoes, and finally a small, brown knapsack that was wrapped around her and rested on the side of her hip.

This girl was Kamala Khan, a girl who loved everything about superheroes and always wanted to be one herself. But those dreams never became a reality for her. Her clothes were covered in dirt and mud from her long voyage to the canyon, yet as the mud partially covered the lightning bolt on her shirt, it also reflected how her spirit was in some way losing all hope left in her.

But what could leave her so down and why was she here in the first place? Well let's look back and find out.

Five years ago on a day unlike any other, the people of San Francisco were celebrating the anniversary of the foundation of the Avengers, Earth's mightiest heroes, and the unveiling of their new headquarters. The hosted the event on top of their new helicarrier, the Chimera. As part of the celebration, there was a competition for those who could write a fanfiction story about the Avengers and get special VIP passes for them and a family member. And Kamala was one of those kids who earned the passes for her and her father, Yusef Khan, or as she calls him Abu. Once Kamala had arrived at the event, she was immediately blown away by sheer number of kids and venues that this event held. There was so much she wanted to do; play in the arcade, buy all the Iron Man merchandise that she could hold, eat so much junk food that she'd throw up, it was an Avengers geek's paradise. Aside from all that, there was a side competition for those who won the VIP passes. Those who could collect all five of the comic books from the five different venues, would be able to have access to the VIP balcony to see the Avengers give their announcements. As she went looking for those comic books, she managed to meet four of the five Avengers, Thor, Captain America and Black Widow, and Bruce Banner also known as the Hulk. Once she had achieved her mission, she made her way to the VIP balcony to meet with her father, but before she did, she stopped by a hotdog stand at the event that was run by an elderly man with orange glasses and a beige shirt. He also liked to say excelsior a lot. After catching up with her father and making her way to the VIP balcony, she could see the entire stage that had all of the Avengers Kamala had just meet along with a scientist named George Tarleton. He was the one that discovered a new energy crystal he called Terrigen that powered the entire Chimera that the event took place on. After a brief description of what Terrigen is and Iron Man interrupting said description by making his appearance, something unusual happened, an explosion was seen on the Golden Gate Bridge drawing everyone's attention to it, Including the Avengers.

The people on the Chimera started to evacuate from the event for safety whilst the Avengers dealt with the new threat. Thor and Iron Man had made their way to the side of the bridge that was connected to San Francisco and dealt with the armed assailants attacking innocent people. As Thor and Iron Man were dealing with them, the Chimera had suddenly taken off with many people still onboard trying to escape. Black Widow and Bruce Banner were about to investigate the sudden take when Captain America ordered them that he would investigate whilst they assisted Thor and Iron Man on the bridge. Hesitantly following with his orders, Both Black Widow and Bruce Banner, with the latter changed into the Hulk, joined up with the other two Avengers. After the four Avengers dealt with a multitude of attackers with unknown goals, Captain America was getting a strange reading from the Chimera about some energy source in the San Francisco bay. But before he could look further, several armed men attacked him from every direction. They had assumed he'd been outnumbered. The Captain however, liked those odds. Captain America made quick work of those men, but before he did anything else George Tarleton asked for the Captain to meet him in the reactor room as there was something wrong with the core. Back with the other Avengers, Black Widow was having trouble getting in contact with the Captain, something about this attack left a burning feeling in her stomach that screamed bad news. Just as things had settled on the bridge, a large truck with some sort of generator on its back had turned up to the party. The driver and essentially the mastermind behind this attack was someone Black Widow knew all too well, Taskmaster. Taskmaster had turned on the generator which was going to destroy the entire bridge and had cut off the other Avengers from Black Widow with explosives. Black Widow was engaged in a long fight with Taskmaster to not only take the other out but also have control over the detonation remote for the generator. After Black Widow had taken down Taskmaster and disabled the generator, Taskmaster left Black Widow with a bit of insight about what they should have focused on rather than himself, which turned out to be the Chimera's core. Just as Iron Man and Thor went off to help their friend, that's when it happened, the Chimera exploded with Terrigen energy and destroying most of San Francisco along with it. The rest of the Avengers knew that they had lost a friend that day, but they will soon realise that they have far worse to deal with.

After Kamala, her father, and dozens of other people who managed to escape the Chimera blowing, the city of San Francisco was forever change by the results of A-day. Thousands of people were killed by the attack whilst others had fallen ill from the Terrigen mist that spread throughout the city. Soon all those had been infected by the mist were trapped in rock-like cocoons to then be awaken with new and otherworldly abilities that many people saw as some sort of disease. The Avengers were blamed for the entire problem and were put on trial to face the public to decide their fates. Ultimately the Avengers were labelled criminals and had disbanded, going their separate ways knowing that there was no other choice. During the five years after A-day, George Tarleton, who had survived the events of A-day, put together a company that worked towards the restoration of San Francisco and the research of a cure for the disease. The company was called Advanced Idea Mechanics (A.I.M.) and had easily worked its way into the hearts of the people assuring them that they will find the cure and to make them all feel safe. But during that time, however, reports of kids and teenagers going missing around the world had some people feeling like A.I.M. was not all who they say they were. Eventually a resistance had built itself up and was fighting back against A.I.M. to stop whatever plans they had for any and all Inhumans. The other day, Kamala had hacked into a secure A.I.M. network in order to learn the truth about what happened on A-day. Eventually A.I.M. caught onto Kamala and hunted her down so that they could steal back any information she had. It also turned out that she was an Inhuman that hid her abilities from the world which made her predicament much worse. After running and fighting off A.I.M. robots, Kamala made her way to a bus stop and took it to Utah to start her search for the resistance and any hope of finding the rest of the Avengers.

Now back with Kamala.

Kamala stopped her rest and pushed herself off the rock to continue on with her search. She walked a few feet before gazing forward at the path in front of her.

"All the conspiracy theories online point to this canyon as the Resistance home base. They're the only chance I've got." Kamala said to herself as a means of reassurance.

She continued on with her expedition through the canyon, as she did, she started to question if coming here was the best thing she should have done. But it was her only option now. Whilst making her way in the canyon, she heard the sound of a drone flying over in the distance and hid behind a rock slab to avoid detection.

"A.I.M.'s out here too?! I have to hurry." She said with worry in her voice as getting caught now would be the end of everything she believed in.

After the drone had left the area, Kamala slowly carried on and crawled through a small cave that led to a muddy slope which Kamala had fallen down and gotten herself covered in even more mud. Once she regained her balance, she looked up and saw that she landed near some sort of facility with a symbol at the entrance. Having had a thought come to her she pulled out her phone to look at a map which showed a resistance base in Utah.

"The Resistance! This is where they are. It's gotta be." Kamala deduced with some hope coming back into her until she suddenly heard the sound of several A.I.M. drone's and robots approach her location.

"No… A.I.M. found them first." The super teen said with fear in her voice. A.I.M. had been intent on making sure no one can stand in their way. At that point, they were focused on taking Kamala out of the picture.

Two A.I.M. robots charged at Kamala with their right arm cannons primed and ready but were immediately cut off by Kamala grabbing them with her two giant hands and slamming them together. After doing that, Kamala then rolled up the crushed robots into a ball, had gotten into a pitchers stance and threw the robo-ball at three robots that were in a line, instantly blowing them up like fireworks. Her attention was drawn by an energy bolt that flew past her face to three flying drones that were preparing for a second attack. Acting before they could, Kamala had stretched her right arm, making it fly like a bullet towards the drones, taking down each one individually with ease. After looking at the remains of the surprised attack, Kamala had a feeling that made her feel uneasy.

"If A.I.M. got here first…" Kamala began but trailed off as she then inspected the facility near her when she arrived. The inside looked broken down and was half submerged into the cliffside making it impossible to search further in.

"Maybe they got away before…" She said as another thought came to her about the Resistance's fate. But she immediately shook it off so that she would still have something to believe in. "No… some must have escaped. They have to be around here somewhere."

Kamala then went out of the facility to continue on with her mission. As she stood outside gazing at the path ahead of her, she began to think about all the trouble she would be in once it was done. Or the trouble she would be in if she failed.

"Well… at least things can't get any worse? Right?" Kamala said to herself but immediately regretted it once there was loud boom sound and a bright, white light that blinded her. Once her eyes had adjusted from the flash, she looked down at hear feet and saw a grey, circle object with a green hourglass in the centre. Kamala picked up the device and began to wonder where it came from.

"Okay… this is weird. What is this thing?"

Before she could comment any further on the strange object, she saw something reflect off of it. She looked up to where it came from and saw something in the sky. It seemed to be golden and humanoid in shape, it also appeared to be getting closer to Kamala. Just before she ran from the strange object thinking it was an A.I.M. drone she caught a strange sound.

"Wait is that… screaming?" Kamala was confused about two things; why would a drone be screaming and why does it sound girly.

"AAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEE-" Was what Kamala heard before it crashed into the ground twenty feet away from her, making a small crater and dust cloud as a result. After winching from whatever took the impact and a bright green flash of light, she looked and only saw a large dust cloud obscuring what lies inside the crater. Hesitantly she grab a broken tree branch and readied herself to swing at anything that came out and attack her. Slowly she made her way closer and closer to the crater until she was a few feet away from it. Kamala then noticed a figure had risen from the crater and was humanoid but less bulky than what was falling from the sky. It was hard to tell which way it was looking so Kamala took a few steps back to prepare for an attack when suddenly…

"Hey!" A teenage boy jumped from the dust cloud and landed in front of Kamala, startling her in the process which made her swing the branch she was hold low and straight into a very awkward and private place.

"Whack… ow… Thud!" The boy collapsed to the ground on his knees cupping his balls and letting out a high-pitched sound before immediately falling to his side in pain.

"HOLY SHIT!?" Kamala shouted after dropping the branch she held and went to aid and apologies to the boy about almost ending his family tree.

After helping the boy up from the ground and apologising over and over and over, she got a better look at the teen. He was Caucasian and had brown shaggy hair, emerald green eyes, and an athletic build. He wore a black shirt, blue jeans and a green jacket with two white stripes on the right forearm and one on the left, front side with a black circle and the number 10 in the centre. Finally he wore black and white Converse-style shoes, and a white and green wristwatch on his left arm. Surprisingly Kamala thought he looked kinda cute.

"Okay… next time, don't sack a dude when he says 'hey' alright?" The boy chuckled the comment whilst still feeling some pain. "Wow, you got a mean swing."

"Thanks. Also sorry about that, you just surprised me that's all." Kamala blushed from both the embarrassment and the compliment.

"Well I'm guessing you want an autograph or something right but that will have to wait until I can figure out what happened." The boy said which made Kamala only look at him with a confused look.

"…And you are..." Kamala dragged the question as to who this person was.

"Wait… are you serious?! I'm Ben Tennyson!" The boy announced with shock and amazement that she didn't know who he was.

This indeed was Ben Tennyson, or more commonly known by others as the saviour of the universe. How was he the saviour of the universe when he is only a teenage boy? It's because of the wristwatch on his wrist, because it is no ordinary watch, it is called the Omnitrix. The Omnitrix was a device capable of transforming the user into a large variety of alien species and was made by Azmuth, smartest being in five galaxies, who planned to use the device to walk a mile in other species' shoes.

Ben had found the prototype Omnitrix when he was ten years old and on a camping trip with his Grandpa, Max Tennyson, and his cousin, Gwen Tennyson. They would spend most of their summer vacation saving lives and stopping criminals, with the occasional alien warlord, power-hungry rival, evil wizard, mad scientist and clown. But his most challenging foe was Vilgax, and alien warlord with the soul focus of using the Omnitrix to make an army to rule the universe. Ben would always come up on top and continue to be the hero he always wanted. Five years later, Ben had retired from using the Omnitrix and tried to live a normal life. It did not last long. Eventually Ben would reattach the Omnitrix, get an upgrade and new alien's, and team-up with his cousin Gwen and his power-hungry rival, Kevin Levin. They would go on many adventurous and dangerous missions to save the world from an alien race bent on ruling the galaxy, Vilgax trying to kill Ben and destroy his world, and many other threats that keep Ben and his team busy. Ben also came across a girl who he fell in love with, Julie Yamamoto. At first, they were close as possible with each other but then slowly grew apart because of all the hero-ing Ben had to do. They both knew that it would be difficult to maintain a relationship like that, but they still did it anyway. Because they both loved each other. Down the line Ben would obtain a new Omnitrix called the Ultimatrix, made by Azmuth's former assistant who went bad, which was basically the same except this version allowed an alien species to evolve and become stronger and more powerful. During that time Ben's identity would be revealed to the world and become a celebrity, which made dealing with bad guys more difficult. Ben and his team had to deal with more bad guys than before like an angry news reporter that hated Ben and everything he did, and an evil power-hungry alien who almost succeeded in ruling the universe but was stopped by Kevin. Ben and his team had started to get use to low level criminals committing crimes and what not until a much greater threat approached. This foe was an interdimensional demon who planned on ruling the multiverse with an iron fist. Ben was unable to defeat the demon and all hope seemed lost until Vilgax used a machine to steal the essence of the demon and use its power for himself. Ben quickly defeated Vilgax and the universe was at peace for now. Azmuth then gave Ben a new Omnitrix that he had been working on since Ben found the original. As an added bonus, Azmuth integrated the evolutionary function from the Ultimatrix into the new Omnitrix, mainly to show that he could do better.

Now back to our two superpowered teenagers.

Kamala just started at the teen with a look of confusion.

"Ben 10… saviour of the universe… wielder of the Omnitrix… nothing?" Ben asked the girl he just meet with annoyance in his voice.

"Sorry, I know everything about superheroes and I've never heard of you. Am I supposed to?" Kamala quickly replied with a shrug.

"Mmnn… then I must be in some alternate universe then." Ben, after thinking it over, causally answered with a blank expression.

"I'm sorry what?" Kamala was by far confused by the teen's strange response. 'Typical. I go looking for help to take down A.I.M. and I find some crazy teen talking about universes and stuff.' She was at that point thinking about leaving the teen whilst he rambled on about nonsense.

"Don't worry I go to them all the time. Last time, I meet this guy who could build machines with his body, it was totally cool… but now I'm stuck in a new universe." The otherworldly teen was starting to come up with a reason on why he was brought here. Then it hit him, the words Kevin said back on Vilgax's ship.

"Dude be careful, Clockwork's time powers combined with the warp drive could be bad news for us!"

"That's it! Clockwork's time ray combined with the warp drive core, causing some sort of time-space anomaly sucking in everything and everyone!" Ben spoke mainly to himself feeling happy that he found out the reason to his new location. But then his bright emerald eyes dimmed from fear as a thought had come to mind.

"Time and space… I might not have just been transported to a different universe, but a different time too. I could be the first one here or the last and everyone else is long past dead… my friends are dead and I'm all alone." That last statement was almost too quite that Kamala nearly missed it. Ben then fell to his knees and stared at his hands and reflected on the decision he made on Vilgax's ship. 'Grandpa, Gwen, Kevin… Julie, they're all gone and it's all my fault… Vilgax was right.' His knuckles were white from clenching his fists out of anger. But before he could blame himself anymore, the girl beside him spoke.

"Hey… I might not know what's going with this, but I do know one thing; the past is the past, and the future is the future. Maybe if you focus on what to do now, then you might be able to find a way home!" Kamala did her best to try and cheer up the sad teen and hopefully learn more about him. Ben merely tilted his head to look straight into her eyes and once he did, he saw one thing. Truth. Reflecting off of her brown eyes was the truth, the truth that everything would work as long as he would focus on what needs to be done.

"Thank you… hehe, you know between getting sacked and realising I'm in another universe with no hope of returning I didn't catch your name." Ben chuckled at the thought as he stood back up to face Kamala.

"Oh! Right, it's-" Kamala was about to tell her name until the ground beneath them had started to shake. Ben having more experience with things like this than Kamala, sensed something coming from below and had immediately tackled Kamala out of the way as an all too familiar robotic crab-man burst from the ground.

"Wait… where the hell am I?! …How'd I even get here?! Last thing I remember was being on Vilgax's ship with…" The new visitor said with confusion and shook whilst looking around at his new environment, until his eyes landed upon one person. "Tennyson!"

"Kraab?! Oh great, I get sent to another universe and I get stuck with Mr. robo-sushi!" Ben was shocked that one of his enemies was here with him as well as somewhat hopeful that he might find his family.

"Another universe you say? Well knowing you, it's not that surprising." The bounty hunter said like it was just another Saturday night.

"Doesn't matter right now, it's hero time! …Oh man come on, recharge now!?" Ben tried to activate his Omnitrix but was meet with a green holographic ring with a warning sign at the top of it.

"Well, looks like you're going to be easy prey. At least while I'm here I get the pleasure of gutting you myself as well as your girlfriend here." Kraab said as he opened and closed his claw handed repeatedly for emphasis.

"Woah she/he is not my girl/boyfriend!" They both said simultaneously with blushes to boot.

"Yeah I don't really care so just die already." Then Kraab immediately opened fire with his clawed hand on the teens creating a dust cloud that obscured them from his vision. Once it cleared, they were both out of sight which annoyed the bounty hunter slightly. "Come out, come out wherever you are. The longer you hide, the more I'm gonna crush you into paste."

Both Kamala and Ben were inside the facility nearby standing on either side of the doorway. Ben knew that whilst the Omnitrix was timed out at that point that he couldn't take Kraab on by himself. He also didn't know anything about the girl across from him, so he needed to find a way to protect her from Kraab.

"Ok, ok… I can't do anything while the Omnitrix recharges but maybe we can distract him long enough to run away. Alright here's the plan; I'll run out there and…" Ben had begun explaining his plan to Kamala but trailed off once he noticed she was not with him. "…Where'd she go?"

"HIYAH!"

Ben then turned to look out the doorway and saw Kamala fighting off against Kraab. At first Ben was going to scream at her for taking the bounty hunter on alone but fell silent once he saw Kamala swinging her enlarged and extended arms at Kraab like a flail.

"Ok… was not expecting that but alright." Ben was by far surprised by her abilities and her will to fight. 'Just who is this girl, how can she do that, and why is she fighting Kraab and not running away?' He couldn't help but stare in amazement and wonder at the girl fighting the bounty hunter. Ben's attention was then pulled back into reality when Kamala threw her fist at Kraab but was caught in his claw then pulling her hard into the side of the canyon. Collapsed to the ground with hazy vision, Kamala could barely see the hunter approach her slowly until he was right in front of her. Before she could throw a punch, Kraab grabbed Kamala by the neck with his right hand and pulled her into the air before slamming her back into the canyon whilst still holding a tight grip.

"You are almost as annoying as that insufferable brat Tennyson! …Almost." Kraab said to the girl in his grasp as he tightened his grip around her neck making her squirm franticly to get some air. Before Kamala's light went out, a rock was thrown at Kraab's head catching his attention to meet Ben's raged face.

"Let her go Kraab or am I not good enough for you anymore!" Ben said trying to make it an insult but sounded more like a death threat. Ben could see that Kraab had lessened his grip around Kamala's neck but still held firm.

"And what are you gonna do about it Tennyson. You can't do anything while the Omnitrix recharges." Kraab countered Ben's threat knowing that he was not capable of hurting him.

"I can do this! …Aaaaaaaahhhh!" Ben had begun screaming at Kraab whilst charging at him with his arms raised above his head. Kraab had seen this coming and immediately shot his claw out to grab Ben with his arms pinned down to his sides. While that happened, Kamala had regained some air and more of her vision after being choked for that long. Once her vision had cleared, Kamala had noticed one of the arms of an A.I.M. robot was on the ground a few feet away from her with electricity sparking out of itself. An idea hit her. Slowly and carefully she stretched her hand to grab hold of part of the arm that wasn't sparking while Kraab was distracted by Ben.

"Are you serious right now Tennyson, that may have worked before but now I'm prepared for anything!" Kraab was almost amused by how stupid Ben was to think that move would work a second time.

"Really? What about that?" Ben said with the biggest toothy grin he could possibly have whilst flicking his chin in the direction of whatever he was talking about.

"What are you talking abo-ARGGGHHHZZZZT!" Was all Kraab could get out before Kamala jabbed the electrical end of the robot arm into his neck causing his entire body to shake and rattle from the shock immediately dropping both Kamala and Ben to the ground. Just when the shocking had stopped, Kraab fell face-first into the ground out cold, smoke coming off of Kraab's neck was a clear sign that he was down.

"Well that takes care of that. Thanks by the way, it you hadn't distracted him I might've been Kraab meat… see what I did there?" Kamala thought that the joke would've made Ben at least giggle but all hid did was cringe.

"Sorry, used that one too many times to count. But hey, those moves back there were pretty awesome. Where'd you learn to fight like that?" Ben quickly changed the subject from the corny joke and onto a more interesting topic.

"I actually taught myself if you must know. Oh, by the way my name is Kamala, Kamala Khan." Kamala stuck out her hand to greet her new friend and saviour and was greeted with Ben's firm hand as they shook.

"Nice to meet you Kamala. I'm Ben, Ben Tennyson." Ben said with a friendly smile.

"I know, you said that already." Kamala replied back with a light chuckle at Ben's forgetfulness. She was really liking the teen the more he spoke. Something about Ben screamed heroic and caring to her.

"Oh! …Right, yeah so… what should we about old Kraab face over there?" The two teens then drew their focus onto the knocked-out bounty hunter a few feet away from them. While Ben had only arrived in the new universe and had no idea of where or if there was a place to hold an alien bounty hunter, Kamala thought of one idea that could work out for both of them.

"We could take him to the Resistance base." Kamala chimed in.

"Resistance base? What, are you like in the middle of a war or something?" Ben was waiting for a laugh or a chuckle from Kamala but all he got was her turning her gaze to the ground and rubbing her arm nervously.

"Something like that… it's complicated but if there is anyone who can hold this guy, it's the Resistance! And lucky for you, I was on my way there now." Kamala's usual upbeat attitude had returned once she focused on the mission at hand.

"But there's still one problem… how are we going to take him there and before he comes to? My Omnitrix is still recharging so that's out of the question." Ben had brought up a could point. How could they take Kraab to the Resistance base before he wakes up? Just as Ben was thinking of a plan, Kamala had begun to stretch her right arm around the unconscious hunter multiple times before grabbing hold of her stretched forearm with her hand, effectively locking it into place.

"Tada… This is how!" Kamala said to Ben whilst doing a one-handed, jazz hands.

"Doesn't that like… hurt or something?" Ben asked with a worried look on his face.

"Eh, as long as I focus it should be fine." Kamala was not worried about her arm being in pain. She was, however, worried about the way Ben was looking at the sky with a sad expression.

"…I wonder how long it'll be before I find them or they find me… if they even want to that is." That last part Kamala did not hear, the rest she did, and she felt bad for Ben as she knows the feeling of being away from home.

"Hey don't worry about. Once we find the Resistance and get this guy locked up, I'll help you find your friends. If you want me to?" Kamala for some strange reason was blushing slightly when she asked Ben that last question. Ben having not noticed it, simply smiled back at Kamala for her comforting words.

"Thanks and yes, I'd like that. Besides, it's not like I was taken to some fairy tale land with wizards and magic, then I'd really have no way home! So, how's about on the way to the base, you tell me how you got your powers eh, elastic-girl." Ben said to Kamala with a smirk to accompany her new nickname.

"Sure. Only if you tell me about your powers first, alien-boy." Kamala returned with her own grin and nickname.

"Ok, ok so, it all began when I was ten, walking in this forest on summer vacation with my Grandpa Max and my cousin Gwen…" Ben began explaining his origins to Kamala as they journey through the canyon to the Resistance base. At that point, it was the start of a life-long friendship. Or perhaps something more.

A/N: Well looks like the journey has begun and our heroes are on a mission, but will they succeed? Will Kamala be able to find the Resistance in time to save everyone and will Ben find his friends and family to return home, if possible?
