Whew it's been a while. I forgot to upload this chapter last week. This chapter we will see some cute interactions between Lucas and Dawn and see a bit more about their school. Enjoy
Chapter 3: Class Representatives
Lucas' first day in school had been bombarded with many questions from the other students. Ranging from his parents, to his hobbies, to Pokémon, to what he would like to be when he grew up.
For instance, Lucas had to clarify to the other students that he in fact was not dumb. Since they heard from Mr. Evans that this would be his first time in school, many of the students took it to mean that he could not do things such as read and write. Lucas had to clarify that he had gone to school before, just not in the way that the other kids were used to. He had to explain how he was homeschooled and the other students upon hearing what homeschooling was all wanted to be homeschooled.
All the constant questions had left Lucas drained of energy and he felt exhausted by the end of his first day. Lucas did however get to meet many people as well as learn many of the day to day workings of the classroom. One of which was how class representatives were elected by the students to help the teacher out.
The second day came around and it was time to elect the class representatives. A girl from across the room named Dawn raised her hand and said that she was nominating Lucas to be the class representative. Lucas looked at her with a look of bewilderment as he had no clue what in the world was going on (this occurred before Lucas learned about the class representatives). Mr. Evans wrote Lucas' name on the board along with a couple others including Dawn. When no one else would nominate themselves or someone else then the voting started.
"All those in favor of having Lucas as the boy representative raise your hand," Mr. Evans spoke, raising his hand as well. He thought this would be the excellent opportunity for Lucas to socialize more.
Almost all the hands in the room had gone up. The other nominee names for the boy representatives came up, but they did not get as many votes like Lucas had previously. Upon counting the final votes Lucas was chosen as the boy class representative. Now that the boy representative had been chosen, Mr. Evans took a poll to determine who the girl representative would be.
Lucas learned later that no one wanted to be class representatives since it just meant doing menial tasks for their teacher such as carry papers and deliver documents. This meant that whoever was chosen to the representatives would have extra work on their hands and it would cut into the students' free time. Lucas later learned that most of the time representatives were chosen randomly since no one would volunteer for the position. In some cases, friends would nominate each other and vote for each other just to mess with them. Dawn was the odd one out since she was the only one that voluntarily chose to be class representative.
Dawn had enjoyed helping her teachers in the past and this time was no different. She had already been class representative in her previous two years of school.
"All those in favor of having Dawn as the girl representative raise your hand."
Again, like before, all the hands in the room went up. The other votes were counted but like before not as many hands went up for the other nominees so Dawn was chosen to be the girl representative.
Dawn smiled as she had gotten the position yet again. She had nominated Lucas for the position since there would be times when the two of them would be alone and she thought it was the perfect opportunity to learn more about him. Despite her best efforts, she had not managed to talk to the boy. The previous day he had been surrounded by a frenzy cloud of students that she could not penetrate. It was as if the other students were acting as a tornado around the boy.
The class had been dismissed for recess. Lucas and Dawn stayed behind per their teacher's request. Everyone waved the pair goodbye and mouthed them a "good luck" as they made their way out the door. Mr. Evans had given the pair their first mission of the year. This mission was of utmost importance he emphasized. He said that the fate of the whole world rested on their shoulders. Lucas' eyes shined bright wondering what this crucial mission was. Dawn did not look as impressed as she knew that their teacher was bluffing.
As it turned out, this important mission was to make copies of the worksheets their class would be working on later in the day. Lucas and Dawn were in the teacher's room where all the teachers gathered to do their work. As opposed to the schools of Unova, Kalos, Alola and Galar, the schools in the Sinnoh region were quite like that of the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn regions. All four of these regions had their teachers not specially bound to classrooms, meaning that the students didn't move from class to class, but rather stayed in the same class while the teachers rotated around. This meant that teachers didn't have their own classroom to do their work in during their office hours but would do all their work in a designated room along with all the other teachers.
Lucas had made several bad copies as this was his first time operating the large copying machine in the room. Some of his pages came out crooked, some came out upside down, some came out unreadable and in some he had copied the wrong side.
"What if… Ahh, what was that sound? Is it supposed to sound like that? Is it going to explode? What does this button do? Is it out of paper? I heard kicking it may make it work." Lucas was desperately trying to get a hold of the situation regarding the copying machine.
Dawn was trying to hold her laughter in while she saw Lucas struggling with the machine. After maybe too failed attempts Dawn saw that it was time to help out the poor boy.
"Here Lucas, let me help you. You seem to be having a hard time." She offered with a large smile.
Lucas nodded and observed how Dawn was using the copying machine. She then began explaining, "Since there are a lot of pages, you don't want to copy them one by one. You just insert all the pages in this tray at the top and click this button." Dawn inserted all the given pages inside the tray and hit the large green button. The machine then asked how many copies should be made.
"Hey Lucas, do you remember how many kids are in our class?" she asked.
"Let's see there's you, me, Kenny, Leona, Emma, Joseph…" and he continued counting on his fingers until he responded with 18.
Dawn was amazed that the boy already knew the names of all the students, and it was only his second day.
"Ok Lucas and then we hit that button right there that asks how many copies you want made," Dawn pointed out.
Lucas nodded and hit the button causing the machine to begin spurring out the pages from the other end. Dawn then showed Lucas how the staple the pages and make sure that they were in the correct order. When they were done, they each carried nine packets to their class. They made a nice conversation on their way there.
"Lucas, if you don't mind me asking, why do you wear those clothes? Did you go somewhere fancy before coming here?" Dawn asked.
"Oh, these clothes?" Lucas asked looking down at this attire. He thought it was normal for kids to wear these types of clothes.
"You see, my old teacher was quite strict when it came to dress code. She always wanted me to look my best and because of that I began wearing these clothes," Lucas said.
"But now that you are here, you don't have to wear those clothes unless you like it. Like those shoes, aren't they uncomfortable?" Dawn asked, looking down at Lucas' dress shoes.
"At first they were, but after a while I guess your feet get used to it. Also, my father wears a lot of these types of clothes and many tell me I look like a miniature version of my father."
"I see," Dawn responded.
After about a couple awkward silent seconds Dawn began another conversation. "Anyways what do your parents do? I'll go first, my dad works in the military and my mother used to be the top coordinator of the region, now she works as full-time mom."
"My parents? Well my dad is an… architect, yeah, he's an architect," Lucas awkwardly responded. He was not sure if he wanted to say that his father was the chairman of one of the largest corporations in the world and one of the wealthiest people as well. Besides, he wasn't completely untruthful since his father was in fact an architect. He had designed and built many large structures across the region and smaller ones just like his home.
"And my mom… she's a fashion designer," Lucas responded a second later. The same principle applied to his mother as well. He didn't want to attract too much attention to himself by saying that his parents did all these things, and he didn't want to get made fun of by the others thinking that he was lying.
"Wow that sounds fun. Your mother does she make pretty dresses like those that contests stars wear," Dawn asked.
"Oh yeah she makes a lot of them," Lucas replied. "She also makes all types of clothes other than dresses."
A little while later they began talking about their hobbies. Lucas had revealed that he liked drawing and Dawn prompted to see some of his drawings. Lucas blushed in embarrassment as he didn't consider his art that good but promised the girl he would show her some other time and maybe give her a piece of his art. Lucas had also revealed how he wanted to become many things when he grew up such as becoming a competent trainer and one day take up the family business after his father. Dawn did much the same, telling the boy that she wished to become the best coordinator in the world after her mother of course. How she wanted to travel the regions trying out new experiences and to just have fun along the way.
Since their class was out to recess, Lucas and Dawn entered the empty room and placed all their copies in the front podium of the class. The door opened and Mr. Evans entered bringing the remaining of the students in. After a quick lesson regarding the punctuation rules, he announced that it was time for their class to have lunch.
Since Lucas and Dawn were the class representatives, they would also be in charge of the serving the lunch to the students as well. Lucas had been completely lost when the other students had begun placing their tables together to make a large table in the center of the room.
That is when Dawn began to explain to the boy, that all the students ate together in the classroom as opposed to eating in the cafeteria. She told him how it was the class representative's responsibility to serve the food to the students. Mr. Evans showed up behind the pair and further explained how lunch would work. He explained how the lunch ladies would bring large containers full of food and distribute them to the classrooms. How the two of them should always wear their white lunch jackets, wash their hands and serve the food.
Lucas nodded, taking in all this new information. Mr. Evans handed the pair their white jackets and the two put them on. One of the lunch ladies came into the room and placed large trays full of food in the front desks. She also brought in all the plates, trays, and utensils that they would need.
Both Dawn and their teacher helped Lucas out when it came serving the food. Their meal for today included a serving of rice, tofu soup, pickled vegetables, as well as their choice of fruit for dessert. Lucas struggled at fist getting the hang of things, but with words of encourage from both Dawn and his teacher, he got hang of things.
At last, the pair had finished serving their final plate of food and it was time for them to arrange their own plates.
"Hey Lucas, why don't you sit with me and my friends?" Dawn asked. She had her lunch tray in her hands and motioned for him to follow her.
"Oh… sure I'd like that," Lucas responded. He followed after her and took a seat with Dawn along with Kenny and Leona.
Lucas noticed that no one was eating yet as if they were waiting for a signal. That signal came when their teacher sat at the head of the table with his own tray of food. He said out loud, "well kids, what do we say again?"
"Thank you for the food," they all responded and began eating their meal. Lucas took that as his cue to begin eating as well. To be honest, the food tasted much better than it looked. He had gotten so used to Alfred's food that this felt like a completely new experience.
Over the lunch period he had gotten some questions from Kenny and Leona and they got to know each other. Before they could go deeper into their conversation, Dawn tapped Lucas on the shoulder and told him it was time for them to help clean up. Lucas nodded and followed her lead.
All the students were to place their plates, utensils and trays inside a larger tray. This larger tray would then be sent to the cafeteria where all its contents would be cleaned and used again for the following day.
A new teacher came into the room and introduced herself to the class. She greeted the class with a friendly greeting, "I'm sure most of you already know who I am, but to those that don't, hi, my name is Ms. Nura and I'm the school nutritionist. I hope you enjoyed your meal, and I will do my best to keep providing you tasty and healthy meals through the school year." She bowed and the class clapped as she left the room.
After the whole ordeal of lunch was over, their lessons continued with a quick lesson in math, art, and some basics of Pokémon training. Before the dismissal bell rang, Lucas found out that he along with Dawn, Kenny and Leona would in charge of cleaning the classroom for the day. There was not much cleaning to be done, they just had to clean the white erase board and do a bit of sweeping. The students that cleaned would be rotated around so everyone got the chance to clean. Lucas felt quite awkward when he grasped the broom and began sweeping in awkward motions. The poor boy might as well be sweeping with wrong side of the broom. The other three had to hold in their snickers as to not make the boy feel bad.
"Here Lucas let me help you," Dawn suggested. She grabbed another broom and showed the boy where to place his hands and how to move the broom. Leona followed soon after wanted to demonstrate as well.
"Imagine like your painting the floor with broom and you want to get as much color on it as you can, but its better if you paint towards one direction," Dawn tried to explain. Lucas starred the broom motions and he happily nodded. He then began sweeping again, awkward but not as awkward as the first time.
"Baby steps, baby steps," Kenny said from the board.
The dismissal bell rang a couple of minutes after they were done. The other kids had already grabbed their backpacks, so the cleaning crew just had to grab theirs and head out. The four them made their way out where many parents were waiting for their arrival.
Johanna had not showed up this afternoon and neither had Kenny or Leona's parents. Since they did not live too far from the school, they could just walk home.
Lucas noticed that his other housekeeper Liam was waiting for him outside. He was a fairly tall young man, with brown eyes, short brown hair and a pair of glasses. Liam say Lucas and waved over to him. Lucas smiled and waved back.
"Is that your dad?" Lucas heard Dawn ask.
"He's a friend of mine," Lucas responded.
"Say Lucas, do you want to go to my house for dinner? Kenny and Leona will join us too," Dawn asked.
Lucas thought for a moment before he nodded. This would be his first time visiting someone else's home.
"Let me just tell Liam first," Lucas said. The others nodded and the boy ran over the Liam where the two were having a conversation. Liam gave Lucas a smile and nodded. He told Lucas that he would be waiting for his arrival later and to have fun.
Lucas then returned to the trio and told them the good news. They were ecstatic that he would be joining them for dinner and the one that was most ecstatic of all was Dawn.
A/N:We finally got to see more of out the pair and the group of friends. I've been writing ahead of this story and honestly I'm having a hard time trying to draw everything together. I'm trying to make this story similar to my last one but also different, but so far it feels like I'm straying further and further away. I've also been trying to find a spot where I can throw Barry in the next few chapters. Not sure when it will happen but it will at some point. Thanks again for reading and look forward to the next one!
