"Why does it always have to be freezing when you're trying to desecrate a grave?" Aatami complains.
"It might be because it's the beginning of April in Minnesota." I respond, and he rolls his eyes. Nydia shushes us and makes a salt circle around Lydia's grave. Sam passes out shovels to the rest of us and we start digging.
Around an hour later, my shovel hits wood. Claire jumps down into our hole and helps Sam heave open the grave. It opens with a creak and a horrible smell.
"Ugh! That's gross." I say, waving my hand under my nose and trying to avoid looking at the rotting body of Lydia West.
"Can't argue with you there." Claire responds. "Now, let's salt and burn this body before Miss Murderer shows up."
As if on cue, a spectral image of Lydia appears next to Claire and throws her up out of the grave. She hits her head on the headstone and falls limp on the ground.
Before the ghost can hurt anyone else, Sam swings his shovel through it and it evaporates.
"Nydia!" He calls up to her. "What happened to the salt circle?"
"I don't know!" She yells back, panic in her voice. "It's hard to see where there's salt and where there isn't because of the grass!"
Sam groans. "Delilah, go help Nydia!" as I climb out of the grave, I hear Sam saying, "Who has the salt?"
When I get out of the hole, it looks like Nydia is having a panic attack. She's on her knees, hugging herself and rocking back and forth. The salt is tipped over next to her. I quickly grab it and remake the circle, and then come back to her.
"Hey, what's wrong?" I ask, making a move to grab her arm, then deciding against it. Everybody has panic attacks differently, and I don't know if she likes being touched or not.
"I can't do this." She says, tears in her eyes. "I thought I could do this, but I can't. I was so stupid! I thought, 'Well, hunting monsters has gotta be better than my life right now, so why not just run away?' I was so stupid!"
"What do you mean?" I ask. I thought that this ghost had killed her parents, just like every other kid at the school. But she ran away?
"I can't. I can't." Suddenly, her eyes widen. "Lydia!" She points somewhere behind me. I turn to see Sam being thrown across the graveyard. I grab a shotgun leaning against Lydia's headstone and hope that I have good aim.
I flinch as the gun goes off and recoils, but when I open my eyes, Lydia is gone. I sigh with relief and look down into the grave. Aatami is frantically pouring salt onto the body, and Jordan is struggling to light a match.
I look up and see Lydia standing above me. "Shit!" I yell and frantically shoot at her again. Almost immediately, she reappears standing over Nydia, who is still having a panic attack and can't really do anything.
Luckily, Jordan is able to light the match, and Lydia bursts into flames before she can hurt Nydia.
"Nydia! Thank god." I say, rushing over to her. "Are you okay?" I put my arms around her.
She nods weakly against my chest. I can feel her tears soaking my shirt, but I don't really care.
"I'm- I'm sorry. I just- I saw her again, and- I don't know. I just shut down. I'm so sorry. That was so pathetic."
"No. No. It's okay, it's alright. It's not your fault, it's not pathetic. Okay?"
She nods. I pull away from her and kiss her cheek.
"I gotta go check on Claire and Sam, okay?"
"Yeah, o-okay." I can't really tell in the moonlight, but it looks like she's blushing.
I get up and go to kneel next to Claire, who is laying on the ground groaning. I wince as I see blood trickling down her forehead.
"Hey, Claire? Ms. Novak? Are you okay?"
She groans. "Is she gone?"
"Yeah. Yeah, we're good now."
"Good." She gets up and promptly vomits. "Ugh. Concussion. Sam?"
"Daisy's got him. He's okay."
She nods. "Good. Good. Good."
"Yeah." I say, helping her up. "We need to get you to a hospital."
"Nydia?" I'm laying in my bed, staring at the slats of her bed and thinking over what went down in the cemetery.
"Yeah?" she responds quietly.
"What did you mean, you ran away?"
She doesn't respond for a while. I'm afraid she's not going to when her bed springs creak and she swings herself down onto my bed.
"Lydia didn't kill my parents. I- I don't have parents. I was living at a foster home there in Worthington. I snuck out one night, just to get away from everything, and I saw Lydia- I saw her attacking my friend Tommy. And I couldn't save him, just like last night. I shut down."
I move closer and wrap my arms around her.
"After I saw that, I wanted to kill Lydia. I wanted to prove to myself that- that I could do it, I could face her and not shut down, I could avenge Tommy. So I ran away from my foster parents- who I hated, so I thought it was a win-win- and I told Jody that the guy Lydia had killed before Tommy was my dad, and here I am." She stares at her hands for a long time after she's done, waiting for me to say something.
"Wow." Is all I can say.
"Do you hate me?"
"What? No! Of course not. I would never hate you."
She smiles slightly. "Good. Thanks. For everything"
Abruptly, our door bangs open and Aatami comes flying in.
"Day! You need to go down to the entrance."
I frown. "Why?"
He responds with three words that make my blood run cold.
"It's your sister."
