AN: I'm so happy about the positive response this story has gotten so far, thank you all so much. Well, here is chapter two.
-One Day Later-
"Gentlemen, thank you all for coming on such short notice." Agent Hill thanked everyone as soon as they had all taken their seats inside the meeting room.
"What's going on?" one agent asked his senior agent.
"This morning we found the bodies of Agents Leaf, and Hertz inside a warehouse at the docks of New York City. Cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the head, poor bastard's where killed instantly according to the medical examiner–"
"Who did this?!" another agent hissed angrily.
"The investigation is still ongoing, I should know since I'm leading it. As of now we have no motive, or any leads as to who did this–"
"Are you saying it could have been anyone? S.H.I.E.L.D. has countless enemies all over the globe, as well as space–"
"One nine millimeter round each where found inside agent Leaf, and Rains head. Our off world enemies don't use bullets, so we can count them out." Hill re-assured her fellow agents.
"Agent Hill, why where they there in the first place?" another agent asked Ms. Hill. Agent Hill hesitated for a second before answering.
"We'll let you know as soon as we find out ourselves." Agent Hill answered innocently as her cell phone began ringing, so she excused herself from the conference room before answering on a secure phone line.
"Director Fury, sir." Agent Hill answered as soon as she was alone in a secure room.
"Any news or developments?" Fury asked his second in command.
"Per your orders I didn't give many details, but I do have some news, and it's not good." Hill answered in a serious tone. "The analytics division called a half hour ago on a secure line and informed me several files have just been reported missing–"
"What kind of files?" Fury asked quickly.
"According to analytics, the files of several items we locked away are missing, as well as several personnel files." Hill answered quickly.
"Which item files where stolen?" Fury questioned.
"Only two have been deduced so far, one was that necklace that was recovered by Captain Marvels team known as the Secret Warriors, the other is an artifact that we recovered from Egypt: The Pharaoh's Cobra." Hill informed the director.
"How dangerous where the artifacts whose files are missing?" Fury asked Hill.
"Most of them where between level one and three, but two where level eight, that being the necklace and the Pharaoh's Cobra–"
"I read the report on the necklace, and I know it can steal and transfer powers. We know what it can do, however no matter how much research and testing we performed on that cobra, it never worked–"
"With all due respect sir, it did work... just not all the way." Hill interrupted in an apologetic tone. "According to legend the Pharaoh's Cobra was a gift to the pharaoh from his many profound magic users. According to the same legend, the bronze cobra that's attached to the staff is actually alive, and contains it's own magic properties. I hate to keep saying it, but legend says that the wielder of the staff could transform anyone or anything into what ever the user desired–"
"Earlier you said it 'worked, but not all the way,' care to clarify?" Fury asked.
"Well, we found the bronze cobra, but not the staff that came with it, and the cobra could barely work without it. It transformed several agents into mice, but it wore off within an hour. It seems that without the staff, the cobra itself isn't much of a threat since it's powers are limited and can wear off quickly–"
"And with the staff and the cobra united?" Fury asked in a tone that indicated he did not like the answer he was about to receive.
"The Pharaoh's Cobra would be at full power. I'm guessing when I say this, but the effects might be permanent if both parts are together." Hill said grimly.
"Is the cobra still locked in the vault?" Fury asked quickly.
"Yes sir, analytics reported the vault is sealed and the cobra is still sleeping inside. But I did order them to quadruple security. With that specific file being stolen, whoever's behind the murders might be planning something–"
"I couldn't agree more." Fury said in a serious tone. Suddenly a thought came to Fury's mind. "Where is the staff that comes with the cobra?" Fury asked quickly.
"We don't know. We never found it, for all we know it could be anywhere on planet Earth." Hill answered.
"Put a team that you trust together, and order them to start looking for the staff. I personally want you to guard the vault that contains the other objects whose files where missing." Fury ordered Hill. "I never trusted Leaf or Rains, and it now seems my suspicions where justified." Fury hissed.
"Weren't they under investigation?" Hill asked in a confused tone.
"I was the only one doing the investigation, since they have a lot of friends in S.H.I.E.L.D., and loose lips sink ships. Few months ago some money went missing from the vault, and was later traced to a paramilitary organization in the Middle East. Leaf claims the group ambushed the convoy during transit and held him at gunpoint–"
"I remember that actually, that was a big investigation." Hill interrupted as she rubbed her chin in contemplation.
"While the convoy was hit, he and Rains where the only survivors, but also where some of the only ones to know the route of the convoy. I have been gathering evidence since then, but their deaths might just confirm my theory that they where dirty." Fury hissed.
"Files go missing, and then they turn up shot dead inside a warehouse. Call me paranoid but they might have been selling the information. Maybe the deal went wrong, or maybe the buyer or buyers didn't want any witnesses." Hill speculated.
"Who bought the information, and why?" Fury asked lowly. "Have you alerted those who's personal files where stolen?' Fury asked.
"No. We're still trying to figure out which of our operatives have been compromised... wait we do know one: Agent Daisy Johnson..."
To Be Continued...
AN: Please leave your thoughts or theories, why where certain files stolen, including Daisy's?
