Hi! So. I finally finished this despite obsessing about Star Wars as well as the event of Percy Jackson's birthday (another series I adore). It's shorter than usual, but I hope you like it. And nearly 2000 reads! Knowing that so many people from all over the world have seen my writing is amazing, thanks you all so much. This is basically set just before Hiccup awakes up. Less fluffy but I dunno...
NaddersoftheStar: Nope, I haven't died. And yes, I have read Wings of Fire. Every single book. Because I adore them. Where are you to in the series? I'll have a look at the fanfic you recommended, it looks good!
Pandamaster97720: Thanks for the ideas, they look as good as always!
AnaWinchester-Universe67: I might use the idea, thanks for reviewing!
Guest: I'm sorry you don't read modern AU, when I write one it will most likely be a one-off.

It had been 6 days since Hiccup lost his leg. Astrid hadn't been to see him in all that time. She knew she should, but it was just too painful. Seeing him helpless and pale, blanket covering his wooden leg - but it was worse to not know if he would wake up. He was in a coma, Gothi had explained, which would last until his body was ready.
Astrid was so used to seeing him as, well, Hiccup. Excited, animated, always going off on some hare-brained plot or plan. The dragons were a part of him too - before he'd met Toothless, she'd never seen him that happy. Hiccup was, well, Hiccup. The village runt, useless. He meant so much to her now.
And that flight in the sky - crimsons and pinks and peaches tinting the clouds as they spun. Astrid remembered clinging onto him at first then letting go to touch the wisps of damp air. Then gliding over Berk. Her head on his shoulder, sharing their warmth. She should visit him, she realised.
Astrid shook her head. No. No. No. Why bother? To see the broken shell of a boy? To wonder if he would ever open his eyes?
But something moved her to go and visit. Feeling slightly shy, she made her way up the hill, in the large door. Suddenly, large black dragon landed on Astrid's back and she gasped.
"Toothless! Don't do that!"
The Night Fury made a small noise which sounded suspiciously sarcastic. Toothless had been with Hiccup every day - he hadn't even been out to stretch his legs.
The dragon's a better friend to him, Astrid scolded herself mentally. Pulling up a small stool, she sat down and looked at his still face. Most of the cuts were healed now but several bruises stood prominently on his pallid skin.
"Wake up, Hiccup. Please," she whispered. No change. Sighing, she got up to go.
"You asked for me?" a voice croaked behind her.
"Hiccup?!" Astrid cried and ran over. He smiled weakly.
"I guess I'm not dead after all. Wait - is Toothless in my house?! Does my Dad know?!"
He pulled back the blanket and stopped in shock when he saw his leg. Where a healthy limb had been, a neat metal prosthetic now replaced his foot.
"I never realised..." he murmured then swung it off the bed. Supported by Astrid and Toothless, Hiccup hobbled over to the door and pulled it open. A Monstrous Nightmare swooped past and he slammed it shut again.
"Ah... I probably should have mentioned that," Astrid began.
"Stay back," Hiccup warned his dragon then opened the door again. The other 'Riders' as they were now called flew past, shouting and cheering. Dragons perched on the roofs, in the food troughs, wandered around among the Vikings. Hiccup's eyes widened.
"It appears I am dead after all," he said in confusion. Stoick walked over.
"No, but you gave it your best shot. So, what do you think?" He gestured to the village.
"Hey, it's Hiccup!" shouted one of the Berkians and villagers began to run up the steps to greet him.
"Good to have you back!" one cried.
Soon he was surrounded by a crowd of excited Vikings.
"Turns out, all we needed was a little more of - this," Stoick explained.
Hiccup looked up at his father is surprise.
"But you just gestured to all of me!" he complained. His father nodded.
"Well, most of you!" Gobber joked, pushing his way over, "That bit's my handiwork. With a little 'Hiccup' flair thrown in. Think it'll do?"
"Ah, I might make a few tweaks," Hiccup replied, looking at the prosthetic.
Astrid had been lost slightly in the crowd and she elbowed her way the the front.
Punching him on the arm, she said, "That's for scaring me!"
"What, is it always going to be like this cos-" Hiccup began. Leaning over, Astrid kissed him, long and soft. "I could get used to it!" he finished. She smiled.
Gobber handed Hiccup an armful of leather and cloth.
"Welcome home," he said.
"Night Fury! Get down!" someone shouted as Toothless hopped over the crowd. Mounting up, Hiccup and Astrid set off into the sky. And while she didn't know what would happen next, Astrid knew that this was pretty great for now - dragons, the cool air, and best of all, Hiccup.
