Disclaimer: I do not own Avengers or the Avenger characters. The only thing I own is the story.
Tonight ended up being the worst night to work at the SHIELD base in the mountain. I had no power or control over what ended up happening, partially because I wasn't like the others. I wasn't a specially trained assassin or some superhuman or even a genius. I was just… me. It was half of the reason I was chosen for this job… that and the fact that my parents had been agents at SHIELD. After they died, my godfather, Phil Coulson, got me a job at SHIELD. I was too young to be an official agent, so instead, I did odd jobs like cleaning and different services to keep SHIELD more of a secret.
I've met and worked for most of the legends that people could only hope to see in real life; Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner, even Tony Stark. I'm a very multifunctional person, and I have adapted to many different tasks to help; cleaning, medical, engineering, and a bit of, the ever-useful, fighting. However, all of the training I've had never could've prepared me for the events that ended up taking place on that one Friday…
"This is where you'll be working tonight. I've assigned you to Barton; he'll be giving you jobs and such. I'm working downstairs so I'll see you when it's time to go home. Do you need anything?" Coulson says.
"I think I'm good. Where's Barton at?"
My answer is presented when Barton stalks over to us from a corner. Coulson smiles and briefly shakes his hand before walking out of the door we had just entered through. I look around the room as Barton silently shows me around the room a little. At one point, we walk past a piece of machinery holding a glowing blue cube, "wait, is that the tesseract?" I ask him.
"Yeah. our greatest scientists have been experimenting on it. They were a little worried that having you come here might be bad, but in the end, Selvig and I were able to vouch for you. Plus, your godfather."
"Thanks for that. There's not much to do in my life right now besides studying, and that's not much either now that Tony taught me basically everything I need to know for the rest of college. Working here gives me a bit of excitement in my life. You going to teach me anything new tonight?"
"We'll see how it goes. First, stay down here for a while and see if any of the scientists need some water or help with experiments. I'm sure you'll do fine with that. After a few hours, I'll come and collect you and I have a few things in mind that you can learn."
And that's just what I did. Many of the scientists took a while to warm up to me, but by the end of my shift, many of them were explaining to me what they were working on with great pride. Most of their work had to be kept a secret, so it was nice for them to be able to share their findings with someone other than their colleagues. They also appreciated having someone to bring them water and snacks, as they hated leaving the experiments for too long in worry that something might happen. After a while, the tesseract starts acting up, and they all have to have complete focus on their work. I watch from afar as blue light flashes from the cube, lashing out dangerously into the air.
