Irma's short legs teeter on the ice. Hay Lin clings to her gloved hand even tighter. Her hair is so pretty, she thinks, hanging like black ribbons in high pigtails. She giggles, and her breath is a puff of dragon smoke in the air. The roof of the older boys' school is dusted with white icing sugar. There are grown ups giving them weird looks as they hold hands. Irma hardly notices, not when Hay Lin's cheeks are flushed so pink.

Hay Lin's grandma welcomes them home with cups of hot cocoa. There is something funny about her smile, she thinks. Hay Lin scrawls a cartoon mermaid on the back of Irma's wrist. She thinks she could hold Hay Lin's hand forever.

a/n: the concept of hay lin giving irma a (fake) mermaid tattoo was shamelessly plagiarised by juliamoonart on tumblr, whose w.i.t.c.h fan art makes me swoon! go show her some love, the talent is immense.
