The Goddaughter

Chapter One: Insane

"Why are we stopping?" Hermione asked as the Hogwarts Express let out a screech indicating its slow stop. "We can't be there yet."

Harry quickly got up and opened the compartment to look around before the train lurched again sending him flying back into his seat, the compartment's door sliding to a close behind him.

"What's going on?", Ron let out as he held onto Scabbers.

"Dunno, maybe we've broken down,'' Harry replied.

The lights flickered off and on again.

"Ouch Ron that was my foot!" Hermione accused Ron, who was leaning his hand upon the window searching the outside of the train to see what had stopped it.

"There's something moving out there,'' Ron said, fright taking to his voice as the lights flickered off again plunging the train into darkness.

"I think something is coming aboard,'' he continued in a slightly quieter tone. The train gave another jerk before settling into silence again, the latch to their compartment sliding closed and the room getting colder. They looked up again to see ice coating the window around Ron's hand, and the sleeping professor's water.

It gave one more lurch, ripping Ron's hand from the window.

"Bloody Hell, what's happening?" Ron yelped in terror.

They looked through the frosted inner windows of the train to see a dark gnarled hand open the latch to their compartment, and a cloaked creature let itself in. Crookshanks hissed, and Scabbers hid as the creature entered slowly as if testing the air. Turning to Harry the figure began to inhale deeply, slowly trying to suck the soul out of the boy. Suddenly the "sleeping" professor shot up, his wand pointed at the creature as Harry succumbed to the darkness, a woman's scream chasing him into the void.

"Harry...Harry are you alright?" Hermione asked as Harry woke from his feint.

Blinking he slowly sat up to see Hermione hovering over him while the fogginess in his vision dissipated. Behind her was the surly looking professor with a concerned face, and Ron who couldn't seem to take his eyes off a girl in all blue robes Harry had never seen before. She was leaning on the door frame of their compartment and even as he handed over Harry's glasses, Ron didn't take his eyes off her.

"Thanks." Harry said before slipping them on still watching the door frame before connecting eyes with the new girl who in turn flashed him a smirk.

"Close call there dude, you were trippin'", came out of that teasing smirk as she turned fully into the room and plopped down on the bench across from Harry.

"What was that?" Harry asked, curious about the newcomer but more concerned about the menacing creature that had taken up the doorway not moments before.

Professor Lupin looked at him with a mixture of concern and amusement as his best friend's son who couldn't seem to wipe the look of utter bewilderment off his face. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a chocolate bar and broke off a piece for Harry.

"Here we go, chocolate. Eat. It'll help." He handed it over and only when Harry had taken a bite did he continue, "That was a dementor, one of the guards of Azkaban."

"It was searching the train, Harry. For Sirius Black." Hermione offered when Harry continued looking confused.

"Now if you'll excuse me, I need to have a word with the driver." the Professor started to head through the door before looking back at Harry and pointed at the chocolate in his hand. "Eat. It will help."

After taking another bite and shooting one last befuddled look at the door, he asked, "What happened to me?"

"You spazzed out bud." The mysterious girl said lightly from across the cabin as she idly picked at her nails. "Dementor took an interest in ya, and started in on your soul."

Hermione gave the new girl an odd look before saying, "Well that's putting it in very crude terms, but yes. Neither of us passed out, but the dementor turned to you and you convulsed before-"

"Before that girl came out of nowhere and shot some blue looking light out of her wand at the creature same as the Professor... And ya, you passed out." Ron rushed in with a shake of his head, seeming to come out of his "hung up on the new girl" stupor with excitement.

"A 'blue light'? Really Ron?" Hermione added with a rueful look at their redheaded friend.

"Whatever 'Mione, it was bloody wicked."

Harry looked again at the newcomer and watched her adopt her earlier smirk at his exuberant friend's exclamation.

"But what about the woman?" Harry asked quickly before the topic got too out of hand.

"What woman Harry?," Hermione asked before turning to Ron to correct him, "That 'blue light' was a patronus spell we were fortunate the Professor and she knew", gesturing to the girl in blue robes who nodded back in acknowledgement.

"There was a woman, I heard a woman scream." Harry stressed.

Hermione and Ron exchanged looks while the girl seemed to only stare at him.

"No one was screaming Harry." Hermione looked at him with concern.

"Actually," The girl of the hour looked at him with a blank face before smiling softly, "It could've been my war cry. I tend to have a pretty loud one."

"There you are, must've been that." Hermione said, looking less concerned but not fully appeased.

"Makes sense to me, you sure did scare us though." Ron said fully unaware of the undertone of disbelief Hermione and Harry held in their eyes.

Harry looked again at the girl, and she very subtly shook her head at him both knowing full well that her "war cry" never happened.

"Ya must've been. Sorry about that guys, didn't mean to frighten you." Harry said scruffing the back of his head, which must've passed off as believable because Hermione's face softened.

"I forgot to thank you miss…", Harry trailed off looking at the random girl who he seemed to trust more than he thought possible for a stranger.

"Ah, you'll have to excuse my ill behavior but I was instructed not to give my name till the sorting ceremony. It's all sorts of annoying but I was told it was for 'dramatic effect'." The girl said as she straightened up for Hermione to take a seat next to her while Ron sat next to Harry.

"That's ok, I'm assuming you are a transfer from Beauxbatons?", the ever-knowing Hermione asked looking at the new girls' silky blue robes and blue kitten heels.

"That's right, my godmother and honorary uncle decided it was time for me to come back from my 'crusade' per-say to be back in England and finish my education here." She said turning to them fully and the golden trio took a moment to analyze her.

She had long, dark russet beach curls that looked silky to the touch as they cascaded down her back to her waist, and a tiny waist at that. Poised in a casual bored-but-still-has-good-posture way in her chair she looked like the epitome of a high society lady with her soft curves, and long legs. Harry spied several rings on her dainty fingers and caught a glimmer of what looked like ear piercings but he scoffed slightly thinking it too muggle for this assumed pureblood. From her perfectly trimmed and polished nude nails, to her soft lips and high cheekbones she was an elegant beauty, which was something they didn't see very much in their early teen years. But the feature that was most startling was her eyes. Full dark lashes surrounded the almond shapes, with silver colored spheres and black ring around the edges of her irises. Like warm pools of white gold that were currently laughing at the edges for catching them in their assessment of her appearance.

Hermione recovered first from their joint staring at the girl after noticing the quirked eyebrow she had drawn in their direction.

"You're 'crusade'?" Hermione asked intrigued by the beautiful young woman sitting next to her.

"Yes, Grim and I have been on an education crusade around the...Oh my gosh I'm so sorry but I completely forgot my godbrother and holy mother of Jesus! Grim is going to start charging around the train if I don't-" She said concern and guilt flooded her face as she somewhat scrambled to the door of the compartment just as it opened on its own and a massive black wolf-like beast growled.
"Sorry Grim! You know I'm fine, so you really shouldn't be so concerned, but I didn't mean to stay this long." The girl quickly tried to appease the creature while Harry, Ron and Hermione all plastered themselves to the window in hopes to get away from the second giant terrifying beast that prowled into their compartment.

"Bloody hell what is that thing?!", Ron exclaimed rather rudely.

"H-honestly Ronald, th-that is a Grim. Normally a protector of churches, and graveyards it's body is wrapped in the shadows of-" Hermione started nervously before being interrupted by the girls scoffing tone.

"Hell. Ya ya whatever. Grim is MY protector, as he would very much like everyone to know, and he wouldn't hurt a fly unless my security is compromised." The girl said walking up to the beast and scratching him between the ears as he lightly huffed at her new acquaintances.

"Merlin's pants, I know you!", Hermione all but screeched as she jumped from her chair. "I don't know why I didn't realize it earlier. You-"

"Ah ah ah Hermione." The girl shot a full blown grin back at Hermione. "Can't say who I am just yet love, though I was wondering when you'd figure it out. It's so good to see you again!"

Harry and Ron exchanged bewildered looks as the two young women practically squeezed the life out of each other in a hug.

"I can't believe you decided to come back to England, honestly I was starting to believe you never would." Hermione exclaimed while pulling the girl to their spots on the bench.

"Hold up a sec 'Mione, you know her?" Harry asked incredulously looking back and forth between the seemingly already acquainted girls.

"Well it's a bit of a long story…. but we have time. When I was eight my parents and I went to go visit my extended family in Russia for the holidays. I was already well on my way to becoming the swotty and unusually intelligent girl you both know and didn't get along with my cousins very well because of it. During a dinner party one night I got overly annoyed with one of my cousins, who wouldn't stop teasing me about my teeth, and I might have accidentally set his pants on fire. I didn't think anyone had caught me since the room had been candle lit and quite a few of my cousins are closet pyromaniacs when one of the many times removed relatives snatched me up and took me aside to thoroughly chastise me for my accidental magic. Once realizing I had no idea that magic even existed he took pity on me and introduced me to the Russian version of Diagon Alley the next day. He was sweet on the Potions professor at the magical school they taught at but could never draw her out for a date because their school's youngest student had captured her attention and wouldn't let her be for the holidays. After finding there was another intelligent young person around, who also knew about magic, I managed to manipulate my uncle into giving me time with this student by setting up a date for him and the professor. In turn the girl was to be sent for a sleepover to the house my parents had rented for us during our trip, while they enjoyed a night to themselves. I had it down to the bottle of wine they were to drink at the restaurant!" Hermione exclaimed laughing a little at her own Slytherin like behavior.

"Even at eight years old you were quite conniving." The girl said laughing with Hermione, "And to think you went through all that trouble and I, being an eight year old brat, didn't even want to meet you because you were taking away precious study time with my favorite teacher!"

They all laughed at the girl's extreme thirst for knowledge and petty like behavior.

"And here I thought Hermione was the only resident bookworm of magical Britain." Ron said between chuckles.

"Anyways we met, and that night was the first night I really got to learn about magic." Hermione said smiling softly at her friend. "Even with all her travels we've managed to keep up with each other pretty well. Though your features really have changed so much it's no wonder I didn't recognize you!"

"You never finished explaining this 'crusade' Miss." Harry pointed out, interest evident on his face.

"Oh she's been going to magical schools all over the world since she was seven! Learning languages, cultures, and more than you can imagine...ah I would've loved to join you." Hermione sighed in rapture.

The girl grinned at Hermione's expression before turning to the boys, "Like she said, I've been traveling the world attending different magical schools, and exploring both magical and muggle places. I can speak eighteen known languages, and have attended seven magical schools, not including the private tutors I had before leaving England."

The boy's mouths dropped to the floor in awe of the girl.

"Eighteen different languages?!", Ron managed to eek out of his shocked state.

The girl winked, "That's if you don't count American English as a language, and the language of the Curupira that I somewhat managed to learn while living with them in Brazil."

At this point, Hermione was looking at her long time pen-pal with eyes of pure lust for the knowledge she contained beneath her pretty skull.

"'Mione you better watch out this year, especially if this girl has been in school since age seven." Harry teased his best friend, knowing her freakishly smart mind would welcome a real challenge.

"Alas, I would be honored to lose to such a knowledgeable opponent. Though I'm not worrying much since we've exchanged practically twenty meter parchments on spell theory, ancient runes, and practically every other topic under the sun. " Hermione said ruefully at the gobsmacked look the boys gave at her statement.

"I'm surprised my poor Augurey hasn't called retirement on me, thank god for feather light charms." The girl chuckled while scratching Grim on the neck.

"True, that poor bird." Hermione uttered before slowly reaching her hand for Grim to sniff knowing from letters that he was more a cuddly fur ball than a terrifying hellhound.

"Uh, 'Mione.." Ron said the nervous note back as he watched one of his best friends put her hand out to the large beast.

Grim simply sniffed her before nuzzling into her hand and huffed. Hermione jumped a little before a grin took over her face as she also scratched the wolf between the ears.

"Nice to finally meet you too Grim." Hermione giggled when the creature licked her palm.

"Well I should probably get back to my compartment before my brother starts ripping around the train like Godzilla." The girl snarked while getting up and brushing off her silk robes. "It was good to meet you, and I'll see you at the feast. I can't wait to catch up with you later Hermione, we have yet to discuss your last couple years here at this school, and from what I've heard they were quite eventful."

Hermione hugged the girl again with a wink, "Likewise my friend."

She turned towards the boys and shook Harry's hand first with a "I'll talk to you later" face and a smile before turning to their redheaded friend.

"Weasley, am I right?", She asked casually, laughter still in her eyes.

"What of it?" Ron said straightening up, assuming he'd get a dress down for being a blood traitor from a poor family.

"You look a bit like your brother Bill,'' She replied with a grin.

"You know Bill, no way! How?", Ron asked, all traces of wariness were chased with looks of shock and elation.

"I'll have to tell you later, cuz I really gotta get going...but I will say your brother is quite the snog." She said laughing as Ron's mouth just about hit the floor. She closed his mouth gently before adding, "You could catch a pixie with your mouth like that."

"You're a little odd... but I think it's a good odd." Ron addressed the girl, the words tumbling out of his mouth awkwardly like they weren't actually supposed to leave. Grim gave a wheezing noise that sounded almost like a laugh before turning around to the door and loping out into the train's hallway.

The mystery girl simply chuckled, following Grim before turning around with a twinkle in her eye and uttered her final statement as a farewell, "Sane is boring my friends."
