Chapter 1: Unusual
May is a 4-year old brunette with blue eyes. At birth, her parents found that she had a gift. The gift of controlling nature. They were stunned when they saw that May can make flowers blossom from the ground, produce bushes, and even make the grass grow. They know that May is too young to completely understand her powers, so they tell her to not unleash her magic in front of anyone but them. Even being a 4-year, May completely understood what her parents asked of her.
In the backyard of May's house, there's a perfectly green field of grass. Right now, she's playing with her Pokémon friends. May is friends with all kinds of wild Pokémon. They come to May's backyard to play with her.
"Hey! Come back here!" May said as she giggled and chased after a wild Skitty.
"Nya~!" Skitty said, enjoying being chased by May around the backyard.
May was running too fast and ended up tripping over her own feet. She started to fall, face first, and she closed her eyes to hit the ground, but she didn't feel Impact. She opened her eyes and she saw that she landed on a giant violet rose. What happened was that, when she was falling, her hands were pointing down and ended up growing a giant rose, so she wouldn't get hurt. This rose was strong and sturdy to hold her up.
She got off of the rose and thanked it for saving her. "Thank you giant purple rose." Since she's four, she doesn't understand the many colors like violet. For some reason, May sensed that the rose said "You're welcome."
May smiled and brought her hand up to hover over the rose. She slowly moved her hand downwards and at the same time, the rose lowered into the ground and was gone.
The Skitty that May was playing with ran back to her. "Nya…" Skitty said, worried about May.
"Don't worry Skitty. I'm fine!" May said happily. When she said that, yellow roses grew out of the ground and blossomed all around her.
Skitty ran around May, energetic and cheerful. May giggled and bent down to pet Skitty. More yellow roses grew. May continued playing with Skitty, until her Mom called from the back door of the house.
"May! Come inside! There's someone we'd like you to meet!" Caroline, May's Mom, called to her.
"Okay Mommy!" May stood up and the yellow roses disappeared into the ground. "I'll see you later Skitty!" May said as she ran off inside the house.
Caroline brought May to the living room where there were three strangers sitting on the couch, along with May's dad, Norman, sitting on the other couch.
"Oh. This is my daughter May." Norman said to the strangers once he noticed May in the living room.
May was hiding behind Caroline's leg.
"Hello May." A blue-haired, brown-eyed man said. "This is my daughter, Dawn." He gestured his hand towards Dawn, next to him, to introduce the two.
Dawn is a blue-haired, blue-eyed 4-year old, about the same size as May.
"Why don't you two go play in the backyard?" Caroline suggested, addressing the two girls. "Get to know each other."
May came from behind her Mom's leg cautiously. "Hi Dawn...want to go play with the Pokémon?"
"Sure!" Dawn perked up. The two girls go to the backyard while their parents talk inside.
Dawn stares at all of the Pokémon flying and running around. "Come on!" May said, running further into the backyard. Dawn ran after her. They sit in the middle of the grassy yard and Pokémon start approaching them cautiously.
"Are they scared of me?" Dawn asked.
"Maybe a little." May answered. "They're just not used to strangers." May got on her knees and faced some Pokémon, signaling them to come closer. "Come on. It's okay."
The Pokémon now approach them completely. "Aww...they're so cute!" Dawn said as she is petting a Buneary and a Piplup. "Do they all live here?"
A Beautifly perched itself on May's head. "No. Only some. Most of them are wild. They come here, so we can play."
"That's cool." Dawn said.
"Do you want to see something even cooler?" May asked. Dawn looked at May.
"Sure! What do you have?" Dawn asked.
"First I need to know if we're friends." May said.
"Of course we're friends!" Dawn answered happily. "Why do you need to know that?"
"Because I want to make sure I only show this to friends and not strangers."
"Okay…" Dawn said.
"Second, I need you to keep what you're about to see a secret. Do you promise that?"
"Cross my heart." Dawn said as she used her finger to show her crossing her heart.
"Okay then…" May said and then spoke to the Pokémon. "I need some space to work." The Pokémon that were around them all backed up and gave them plenty of room. Dawn cocked her head as to why she needs space.
"Now Dawn...watch...this…" May said as she brought her hands close together, palms to each other, but not connecting. A small pink orb-looking ball of light formed in between May's hands. Dawn stared at the orb.
May slowly separated her hands and the orb grew. May then placed her hands on the ground and yellow roses grew all around them. Dawn watched roses bloom next to her with her own eyes. May closed her eyes and focused her powers, hands still on the ground. More roses grew, this time they were lavender colored.
Dawn couldn't even say anything as she watched this happen. She was in shock. May opened her eyes and lifted her hands up, looking at all the roses around them, yellow and lavender.
"How...what…?" Dawn said, mouth agape. May giggled a little at Dawn's response.
"You see…" May started explaining and Dawn closed her mouth to listen. "I was born with these powers. Doctors can't explain it. I have the power to control nature."
"C-control nature?" Dawn asked, in shock.
"Yep!" May said happily. "And flowers isn't all I can do."
"What else can you do?" Dawn asked, now smiling.
"Watch." May said. She moved her hands and faced her palms to the spot next to Dawn. An Oran Berry Bush grew out of the ground. May moved her hands to point to another area of the backyard and an Apricot tree grew. May lowered her hands.
"Wow…" Dawn said amazed. "Trees and blushes too?!"
"Yep!" May said proudly. She used her hands and lowered the tree, bush, and flowers back into the ground.
Dawn clapped at May's amazing gift. "You're incredible!"
May blushed a little at her kind words. Pink roses sprouted around her. May and Dawn looked at the roses.
"Ooh! Pretty!" Dawn said.
"I've...never been able to make them pink…" May said, surprised.
"Never?" Dawn asked.
May shook her head. "I've tried to, but I couldn't. They always just appeared yellow or purple. And earlier today, they were a different shade of purple than a little while ago."
"Hmm…" Dawn is thinking about what May said and is trying to think of why that is. "I think I got it!" Dawn exclaimed.
"Got what?" May asked.
"The colors of the roses must reflect your mood!" Dawn said. "They are only a certain color because of what you're feeling!"
"I...never thought of that." May said.
"What we need to do is pay attention to the colors and learn what they mean!" Dawn said excitedly.
"And you'll help me with that?" May asked hopeful.
"Of course! I'll be over here a lot since our parents are friends." Dawn answered.
"Yay! This sounds so exciting!" May exclaimed. "You promise you won't tell anyone though?"
"Of course I won't tell! I crossed my heart." Dawn said as she crossed her heart again.
"Thanks!" May said happily. Yellow roses grew around them.
"The first color!" Dawn said. "What were you feeling?"
"Umm...well, I was feeling happy that you promised not to tell." May answered.
"That's it! Happiness! Yellow means you're happy." Dawn said.
"Cool!"
"Do you remember what you were feeling earlier when you produced two different purples?" Dawn asked.
"Hmm…" May said, thinking about earlier. "Let's see...I was having fun showing you my powers and...I focused on creating more roses...and that's when the light purple ones grew." May concluded her thinking.
"Concentration?" Dawn asked. "Would you say that's a mood?"
"I don't know…" May answered.
"I guess we should wait to figure out what light purple means." Dawn said.
"Okay." May agreed.
"What about the darker purple?" Dawn asked.
May started thinking back before Dawn and her parents came over. "What happened was...I was playing with Skitty and I tripped. I was scared that I was about to crash into the ground, face first, but a dark purple rose saved me."
"That's it!" Dawn said. "Scared!"
May's eyes lit up. "Yeah! The dark purple one means scared! And the last color is pink…"
"Let's see...I started clapping because you are incredible with this power and-"
Dawn was cut off when pink roses grew around them. Dawn looked up at May. "You're blushing!" Dawn pointed out.
"Well...how can I not at your kind words?" May asked, a slightly pink face.
"So...when you blush, pink roses appear?" Dawn said as a question.
"I guess that's part of it, but we'll have to wait and find out about the mood." May said.
