Chapter 2: Red Roses

It's a year later and May is five years old. Caroline and Norman know that May told Dawn about her powers and May told them that she trusts Dawn to keep her secret. Over the past year, May and Dawn would visit each other often and they would try and figure out the meaning of May's roses. May and Dawn told Caroline that the roses represent May's mood and Caroline explained that the "light purple" is lavender and the "dark purple" is violet.

So far, May and Dawn have figured out several colors of May's roses. Yellow roses mean that May is happy. Orange means enthusiastic. Lavender means that May is calm and relaxed. Violet roses mean that May is scared or fearful. White means that May is bored. Pink roses appear when she's feeling loved and usually appears when she blushes. Those are the colors that May and Dawn defined.

It is the first day of Elementary School for May and Dawn. They are assigned to the same Kindergarten class. May is about to leave for school.

Caroline is squatting down to May's level. "Now remember May, try to hide your powers from everyone at school."

"Okay Mommy." May said. "I'll try."

"Good. Now have fun at school." Caroline said as she stood up.

"I will! Bye!" May said as she ran towards the car with Norman already inside. She entered and they are off to school.

"Bye May, have fun at school!" Norman said as May exited the car.

"I will! Love you Daddy!" May said and Norman drove off.

"Hey May!" A voice from behind May yelled while running. May turned around.

"Dawn!" May yelled back happily as she saw the blue-haired girl running towards her.

Dawn's foot got caught on the uneven sidewalk, and she tripped. May gasped and quickly moved her hands in front of her, a violet light coming out of them. A giant violet rose appeared on the sidewalk and caught Dawn before she could hit the ground. May looked around. No one. May quickly ran to where Dawn is on the violet rose and grabbed her hand.

"Quickly!" May said. May helped Dawn up and she made the rose disappear.

"Thanks for that May." Dawn said.

"You're welcome." May said. "I'm just glad no one saw. I'm not supposed to use my powers at school." May whispered to Dawn.

Dawn nodded. "If you start using your powers without knowing, then I'll let you know." Dawn whispered back.

"Thanks. Let's get to class."

"Okay class." The teacher said. "Since it's the first day of school, I figure you all can just get to know your classmates for the year. Feel free to walk around and talk to your fellow peers."

Dawn and May are sitting next to each other in the class. Good thing, right?

"Do we have to talk to the other kids on the first day?" May complained quietly to Dawn.

"I know, right?" She whispered back. "Your powers might set off when talking to the other people."

"Hello there." A voice said from in front of their desks. This boy has black spiky hair and brown eyes.

Dawn and May look up at the person.

"Hi. My name is Ash. What are your names?" Ash asked.

"Hi Ash. I'm Dawn." Dawn said.

"And I'm May." May said.

"Nice to meet you both." Ash said. "Can I sit here?"

"Sure." May said. Ash grabbed a chair and sat in front of them.

"Looks like we made a friend!" Dawn said.

"And I made two!" Ash said, laughing a little. "So, did you two know each other before today?"

"We did actually! Since we were four." Dawn answered.

"Cool!" Ash said.

"Dawn would visit my house and play with wild Pokémon." May said. "I'm good at making friends with all kinds of Pokémon." May said happily.

"Awesome! I've been told by my parents that I'm too energetic that it scares small Pokémon away." Ash said, rubbing the back of his head in embarrassment.

May and Dawn started giggling with Ash laughing shortly after. May's hands under the desk on her lap started glowing yellow and the ground around them started growing yellow roses. No one in the class noticed except Dawn. She was the only one who looked down at the floor. She nudged May in the side. May looked at her.

Dawn pointed down at the floor. May looked down and gasped. May made the flowers disappear.

"Is something wrong?" Ash asked.

"Nothing!" May said quickly. "Nothing at all."

"Whew! There were a few close calls today." May said as she and Dawn are waiting for their parents to come pick them up.

"Yeah. You were happy a lot today." Dawn said.

"But...am I just...not supposed to be happy in school? Not show any emotion?" May asked.

"Even if you show no emotion, I'm sure white roses will sprout." Dawn answered.

"Yeah…" May sighed. "I thought I had my powers under control, but I'm far from mastering them."

"I'm sure you'll get the hang of it." Dawn assured.

"Okay Dawn. I think I got it." May said. Dawn and May are at May's house in the backyard, months after the first day of school. May has been practicing her powers every day and now she has a new trick to show Dawn.

"Let's see it!" Dawn said.

May took a deep breath. She lifted her right hand towards the sky and focused her power to her hand. Her hand glowed a light purple and lavender rose petals started flying out of her hand. They had a perfect silky look to them. They slowly fell to the ground surrounding May. Dawn stared at the beautiful rose petals falling, her mouth slightly open.

May stopped the roses from coming out and she put her hand back to her side. Dawn clapped for May's wonderful performance. May took a small bow.

"That was so beautiful!" Dawn gushed.

"Thanks! I've been working on that move for awhile." May said. Pink roses grew around May. She sat down on the grass.

"The petals were lavender too, meaning that you were calm." Dawn said.

"Yeah." May agreed.

"You've come a long way since last year." Dawn said.

"Thanks. I wonder what other colors the roses can be."

"Me too! It's exciting to think about." Dawn said.

Time skipping to a day in 5th grade 5 years later...

"Are you excited?" Dawn asked.

"About?" May answered.

"Next year we start Middle School!" Dawn exclaimed.

"Yeah! And-" May agreed but cut herself off when she saw someone walking by her in the hall. He had green hair and green eyes. She stared at the boy as he walked down the hall and greeted another boy, who she assumed was his friend.

"Umm...May?" Dawn said, waving a hand in front of her face.

May blinked. "Huh?" She looked next to her at Dawn. "What's wrong?"

"You were spacing out." Dawn answered.

"Oh. Yeah…" May said as she dreamily exhaled and leaned on her side on the wall, looking at the green-haired boy. Dawn followed her gaze to the boy.

"Oh...I see now…" Dawn said, smirking.

"Huh? See what?" May asked as she looked back at Dawn.

"Seems like someone's in love…" Dawn said.

"What? No I'm not!" May denied. She looked back at the boy.

The friend that the green-haired boy is talking to glanced over at May and told his friend to look in that direction, signaling his friend which way to look with his head. The person May is staring at turned slightly and looked in her direction. May quickly turned away and looked at Dawn, blushing slightly.

"Mm hmm…" Dawn hummed, smirking. "Not in love, huh?"

"Shut up." May muttered. Though her head was facing Dawn, she looked back at the boy with her eyes. She saw him smile and look back to his friend. They entered a classroom. May's blush deepened. Red roses started appearing on the floor around May. Dawn noticed it, and thankfully no one else was around to see.

"May, look!" Dawn whispered as she pointed to the floor.

May gasped. "Red?!" She whisper yelled. "I've never produced red before!" She quickly made them disappear into the ground.

"Red…" Dawn started thinking about what mood red represents. She smirked. "So...about that green-haired boy…" her voice trailed off.

May blushed. "W-what about him?" The red roses appeared again around her feet.

"That's it!" Dawn exclaimed.

"What? What's it?" May asked, making the roses disappear again.

"Red means love! It's so obvious." Dawn said.

"I, but, he, what?" May asked in incoherent sentences.

"It's so true! Looks like you have a crush on that boy!" Dawn said.

May sighed. "I guess there's no denying it…"

"Okay. We need to find out his name!" Dawn said.

"What? We have a different class than him!" May responded.

"That's why you'll talk to him during lunch!"

"What? I can't do that!"

"You're gonna though. Because I'm gonna make you." Dawn said.

"No. You can't make me." May said, crossing her arms over her chest. Dawn rolled her eyes.

It's lunch time. Dawn and May are sitting at a table, looking at the table where the green-haired boy is sitting.

"Okay. He's alone. Go get him." Dawn said.

"Dawn...I can't do that…" May frowned. Violet roses sprouted on the table around May's arms.

"May, no need to be nervous."

The violet roses disappeared before anyone else could see them. "But Dawn…" May started. "I'm definitely going to sprout red roses when I'm talking to him, and I can't let that happen."

"You're right…" Dawn agreed sadly. "That will definitely freak him out if you do that."

"Exactly." May said.

While May and Dawn were looking at the other table, they saw plenty of other girls crowd around the green-haired boy.

"Drew! I love you!"

"You're awesome Drew!"

"Please say you'll be my boyfriend!"

May and Dawn look at each other and then they look back at the other table.

"Are those...fangirls?" Dawn asked.

"Look at that. No way I have a chance now." May said sadly.

"Wow...everyone seems to really like that Drew person, huh?" Dawn said.

"So his name is Drew…" May said quietly to herself. They saw Drew tell all of the girls to leave him alone. They saw Drew glance at May, shine a smile, and look away. May blushed again. Red and pink roses were coming out of the ground.

"May." Dawn whispered. "Calm your feelings."

"R-right!" May whispered back. She took a deep breath and the roses disappeared into the ground. "I'm surprised nobody's noticed yet."

"Yeah. You've been lucky May. All throughout Elementary School." Dawn said, smiling.

"I just hope that I continue being lucky throughout Middle School as well…"
