Chapter 3: An Arrogant Jerk
"First day of school May!" Caroline called from downstairs.
"I'm coming!" May yelled back. She looked at herself one more time in the mirror, before grabbing her backpack and running downstairs. "I'm ready to go!"
"Okay May, first before you leave, I have something for you." Caroline said.
"Really? What is it?" May asked.
"Here." Caroline said as she held a small box towards May. The box was pink and was wrapped in a darker pink ribbon with a rose pattern in the middle. May slowly took the box out of her Mom's hands.
"What's inside?" May asked.
"I'm not telling. Just open it."
May took off the ribbon and opened the small box. Inside were two identical bracelets. They were an inch wide like a watch. They have gems attached to them, each a different color of rose, representing the different moods that May's roses reflect: Pink, Red, Yellow, Blue, Lavender, Violet, White, Black, and Orange. These are the colors that May memorized from her moods. Pink means she's feeling loved and is usually blushing a bit. Red means she's in love with someone and is blushing a lot. Yellow means she's happy. Blue means she's sad. Lavender means she's calm and relaxed. Violet means she's scared or nervous. White means she's bored. Orange means she's enthusiastic. Black means she's mad and frustrated. She's dealt with all of these emotions during her time in Elementary School.
Now she's in sixth grade and this is the first day of school. Her best friend, Dawn, is attending the same school she is. May puts on both bracelets on each of her wrists.
"What are these for?" May asked.
"They're to help keep your powers under control." Caroline answered. "Your father programmed them. There's small devices in each of those rose jewels that will help with your powers."
"Wow. That's so cool!" May exclaimed as she held up her wrist to see the jewels reflect the light onto the wall. "Not only do they help me, they also make pretty accessories."
"Of course you'd say that." Caroline said sarcastically.
May giggled. "Let's get going Mom!" She said as she ran to the front door.
"Okay, okay. I'm coming."
"Dawn!" May said as she walked into school grounds after her mom dropped her off.
Dawn turned around. "May! You made it!"
"Of course I did." May stopped in front of Dawn. "Look what I have to help me control my powers better." May said as she held up her wrists.
"Ooh! Pretty!" Dawn exclaimed as she stared at May's bracelets.
"Thanks! Apparently there's small devices inside these jewels that will keep my powers under control."
"Hopefully it works!" Dawn said.
"Yeah...Hopefully…"
Dawn looked behind May in the distance. "Ooh...look who goes to this school as well…"
May turned around and saw who Dawn was looking at. She quickly turned back around. "No! Not him!" May whispered to Dawn.
"Why not May? I thought you liked him." Dawn said.
"But I might start blushing like crazy if he looks at me!"
"Don't worry May. Bracelets, remember?"
"I know, but-!"
"Hello there." A voice said from behind May.
May turned around and her eyes widened. "I...umm...hi…" she blushed.
He smirked at May's red face. "I'm-"
"Drew…" May finished for him, eyes still wide.
Drew flicked his bangs. "So you've heard of me. Makes sense. After all, I'm quite popular with girls like you."
"What do you mean by that?" Dawn asked.
"I mean...fans. I have so many fangirls, and it looks like your friend here is one of them."
"Oh. May? She's not a fan. Right May?" Dawn asked, shaking May a little bit to snap her out of her trance.
"Huh? Oh right! I'm not a fan." May said once she snapped out of it. She turned her gaze down to the ground, trying to hide her blush.
Drew reached his hand out and gently lifted her chin up with his index finger and thumb to make her look into his eyes. May's blush deepened at the close proximity between them.
"Yeah. Sure she's not a fan." Drew said sarcastically. He let go of May. "Just a word of advice April, if you're seen talking to me for a long time, girls will come after you."
"Hey!" Dawn yelled. "You're the one that came to us!"
May's blush disappeared. "And...what did you call me?"
"April. Like it?" Drew asked. "I'd better be going now. Don't want to keep my fans waiting." He added as he turned around and started walking away.
"Like it?" May's brow furrowed in anger. "I thought you were like the nicest guy ever! But you're just a stuck-up, arrogant, egotistical, jerk!" May yelled. Drew stopped walking.
"Hmm...so you've changed how you feel about me…" Drew said.
"That's right!" May yelled.
Drew took out a red thornless rose out of nowhere. He tossed it up behind his back and May caught it.
"What…?" May questioned, staring at the rose in her hand.
Drew slightly turned, so May and Dawn could see his face. He flashed May a smile. "Take care March." With that, he walked away.
"Umm...what just happened?" May asked.
"He gave you a rose that's what!" Dawn answered excitedly.
"Oh. Umm…" May said as she looked down at the rose. "It's no big deal." She said as she put it in her backpack.
"No big deal?! May, do you know what red roses mean? You should because...you know."
May rolled her eyes. "Of course I know what red roses mean. It just doesn't feel like that though…"
"Well, I'm sure it's a sign. That Drew is certainly romantic isn't he?" Dawn asked.
May blushed. "Well, he may be romantic, but he also didn't call me the right name, he's stuck-up and annoying, and he's a jerk." May said, crossing her arms.
Dawn and May noticed two jewels on May's bracelets glow. "Wow. The red and black roses are glowing. Does that mean that you're in love with Drew, but mad at him at the same time?"
"I guess so." May muttered angrily.
Dawn giggled. "You can't hide that you still love him."
"Maybe I can't, but he's still a jerk for getting my easy one syllable name wrong."
"I wonder why he did that." Dawn wondered.
"Maybe to get on a stranger's nerves. And it worked!" May said angrily.
"You want to know what also worked? Those bracelets! You didn't grow any roses while talking to Drew!"
"Yeah...that's right…" May realized. "These bracelets are cool." She said happily.
During lunch…
"Ugh. Just look at him." May groaned while looking across the cafeteria at a certain green-haired boy surrounded by fangirls.
"I know, right? He's really popular everywhere he goes." Dawn said.
May looked down at the table and her bracelets. "How can an arrogant jerk like that be so popular?"
Dawn looked at May. "Maybe because all of those girls fell for him the same way you did." She answered. "By his looks."
May blushed and her red rose jewel glowed. May shook off the blush. "Well, I definitely don't like him now."
"Don't like who now?" May and Dawn turned to the side to see Drew standing there next to the table.
"Why do you care?" May said coldly.
Drew took a seat next to May and a lot of gasps were heard. May rolled her eyes.
"You know...you should feel honored that I'm sitting here." Drew said.
"Well I'm not." May said angrily.
"Come on May... It's not too bad, right?" Dawn said. May glared at Dawn.
"See? Your friend approves of me being here, so why can't you?" Drew asked.
"My 'friend' has a name Mr. Popular." May said annoyed.
"Right. Sorry Dawn." Drew apologized.
"So you get her name right, but not mine?" May said angrily.
Drew smirked. "It's more fun to tease you."
"Oh really? Tease?" May said, eyes furrowed.
Dawn giggled and Drew answered May. "Yes, tease. You should feel honored to be teased by the famous Drew."
"Well I don't." May replied.
"Oh really?" Drew said and then he noticed May's identical bracelets on her wrists resting on the table. "Those are pretty." Drew said, pointing to the bracelets.
May looked at what he was pointing to. "Oh. Umm...thanks?"
"Where did you get them?" Drew asked. May hid her hands under the table.
"They were a gift from my Mom." May answered.
May is in the backyard of her house doing some special work. Dawn is, of course, there to watch and enjoy the show.
May took off both of her bracelets and placed them on the ground. She took a deep breath. May stomped her foot on the ground and a green wave of magic appeared quickly and disappeared just as fast. Dawn watched as grass started growing on the areas where it's only dirt. May's powers made it so that the entire backyard was perfect green grass. Dawn clapped for May.
May ran to the edges of the backyard and faced her palms towards the ground. Pink roses started sprouting and May ran across all of the edges of the yard. The entire backyard was edged with pink roses. May ran to certain areas on the edges and grew some berry bushes for the wild Pokémon. Dawn watched as May sprouted yellow roses around her and in the center of the backyard.
"And done!" May exclaimed.
"Wow May...you really colored this place up!" Dawn said.
"Yep! It looks way better now! More color!"
"You're really getting the hang of it." Dawn said.
"I just keep getting better and better!" May said happily.
