Chapter 6: Secret's Out
"You're here!" Dawn exclaimed as she gave May a big hug.
"Okay Dawn. Getting squished here." May said.
"Oh. Sorry." Dawn let go of May.
"I'm here thanks to you guys! That was a short suspension." May said.
May looked behind Dawn at Drew who is just leaning against the wall, smelling a rose. May walked to Drew and he opened his eyes.
"You saved me...again." May said, smiling.
"Nah. It was a team effort." Drew said as he looked at Dawn. Drew looked back at May and handed her the rose.
May slowly took the rose and blushed, her red rose jewel glowing. Drew gently reached out his hand and brushed his hand against May's cheek, tucking strands of hair behind May's ear.
"I knew you weren't going to disobey the rules of the school." Drew said. "It's good to have you back." Drew smiled, took his hand back, and started walking off leaving a blushing May.
"Aww...you two are cute together!" Dawn gushed.
"We're not together!" May said. Dawn giggled at May's sudden reaction.
With Drew and his friend Gary…
"So Gary, what should I do?" Drew asked.
"So let me get this straight…" Gary started. "You think you're in love with this girl named May...she doesn't like you in that way...and you need advice…"
Drew nodded and Gary started laughing.
"What's so funny?" Drew asked.
"What's funny is the famous Drew is asking me for help with girls." Gary said while laughing.
Drew rolled his eyes. "It's just that...I've never had a connection with any other girl like the one I have with May. She's...different."
"How so?" Gary asked.
"When we first met, she was the same as every other fangirl I came across. But now...even though she calls me an arrogant jerk, she still is one of the two girls at this school who treats me like I'm not a celebrity of the school. Which is how I want to be treated."
"Whose the other girl?"
"Her best friend Dawn."
"Is she cute?" Gary asked.
"I don't know! You find out for yourself!" Drew yelled.
"Okay, okay. Calm down." Gary said. "Anyway, do you know for sure that you love May?"
"Yes...no...I don't know!" Drew said.
"Well...the only advice I can give you is to keep winning her over with roses until you find out for sure that she feels the same way." Gary said.
"Even if it takes me until High School to find out?"
"That's how true love works." Gary said. "If you both really love each other, your love will continue on for years to come."
It's recess time!
May and Dawn are playing with the wild Pokémon that visit the school.
"Okay. Here it comes!" May yelled across the field. She threw a frisbee towards a Beautifly. Beautifly returned it by using gust. May caught it and turned to throw the frisbee to Dawn.
Dawn jumped up and caught the frisbee. Dawn threw the frisbee across to an Ambipom. The Ambipom jumped and caught the frisbee with one of its tail hands. Ambipom threw the frisbee towards May, putting too much pressure in his throw.
The frisbee came fast. May gasped, closed her eyes, and lifted her hands up to block it and a giant sideways violet rose appeared in front of her. It caught the frisbee inside of it. Dawn, Beautifly, and Ambipom went over to May.
"May! Are you okay?" Dawn asked worriedly. Unfortunately, people looked over and saw the giant rose. This field was full of people after all. Drew, not being one of them.
May opened her eyes and quickly motioned her hands to make the rose disappear. The frisbee fell and Ambipom caught it. People around her started murmuring to each other.
"Was that a giant rose?"
"She made it disappear."
"How did she do that?"
"Uh oh…" Dawn said as she heard everyone whispering to each other. All eyes were on them.
"This is bad. Now everyone knows!" May whispered to Dawn.
"They don't know for sure that that was you, right?" Dawn asked. May and Dawn suddenly heard gasps from their small audience.
Dawn looked down at May's feet. "May!" She whispered. "The ground!"
May looked down. She had unconsciously been growing violet roses around her on the ground. In front of these students. Thankfully, not in front of Drew. She just knew that he might tease her for something like this.
May looked up at Dawn and whispered, "Dawn! My powers are getting stronger! Even with these bracelets on."
More roses keep sprouting out of the ground. "May, you need to calm down!" Dawn whispered.
"I can't!" May whispered back. "I don't like when all of these eyes are on me which is why the roses are violet."
"Okay. We just need to get away from these staring eyes." Dawn said. She grabbed May's arm and they slowly start walking away from the students. With every step that May took, more violet roses appeared. She is creating a path of roses.
May is looking down while they walk past the audience. May hears more whispers from some people.
"Is that some sort of magic?"
"It's a freaky kind of magic."
"If I were her, I wouldn't show my face here ever again with that freak magic."
May's eyes started getting watery from their comments. Now, as they continue walking, blue roses started appearing as well. May is feeling sad and scared at the same time.
"May, don't worry about them. They don't know how great your powers are." Dawn said.
"Of course you'd say that." May said with a frown. "I showed you my powers when we were four. Of course people would like them if they're little, because children like magic. But...these people…" May's voice trailed off.
"They just don't know what they're talking about." Dawn said. The roses from behind them start disappearing the farther they get. People are still whispering about May's "freak magic" and that "she doesn't belong here."
Some tears started making their way out of May's eyes and down her face. More blue and violet roses kept sprouting.
"May, deep breaths." Dawn said.
May inhaled and exhaled to calm her emotions. That slowed the speed the flowers were sprouting. She did it one more time and the flowers stopped appearing. May and Dawn walked inside the school and went to their lockers. The roses were now all gone.
May opened her locker and stared at the inside, so no one could see that she was crying. She started wiping her tears.
"May, are you okay?" Dawn asked.
"What do you think?" May answered.
"Right. Probably wasn't the best question to ask." Dawn said. "It wasn't...that bad, right?"
"They called me a freak, Dawn." May said. "I've never been so nervous in all of my life."
"What were you nervous about?" A voice from the other side of May's locker door said. May jumped a little at the sound of his voice.
"Umm...nothing." May said.
"Why is your head in your locker, but you're not moving?" He asked.
"Umm...Drew." Dawn said. She walked around May to Drew and started pushing him away. "Maybe you should go now."
"But why?" Drew asked.
"Because May...isn't...feeling too well." Dawn said.
Drew stood his ground and Dawn stopped pushing him. Drew looked behind May and saw people around her, staring and whispering to each other. He looked back to Dawn.
"Alright. What's going on?" Drew asked suspiciously.
"Nothing!" Dawn said.
Drew walked past Dawn and to May. He glared at the people who were staring at her. They got nervous and walked away. Dawn walked back to May.
"So what's wrong September?" Drew asked.
May tensed a little and didn't answer as she just kept her head inside of her locker.
Drew pulled May out of her locker and closed it, turning May around to face him. May kept her gaze down at Drew's shoes.
Drew lifted her chin up with his index finger and thumb and stared into her eyes. "Why have you been crying?" Drew asked.
That question only made more tears come out. Drew wiped them away with his thumb. "Tell me." Drew said.
"No Drew…" May started. "I can't." May said as she pushed Drew's hand off of her face and started walking away with Dawn following shortly afterward. Drew just watched them walk away, slightly in shock and confusion.
After that day, it was always like this:
May and Dawn are walking towards their class and Drew is walking the other way. Drew stops when he sees May walking his direction and he tries to talk to her.
"May, can we talk?" Drew asked. Since Drew wants May to listen to him, he calls her by her actual name.
May walks past Drew without looking at him and Dawn looks at him quickly, but turns away without saying anything.
Another day during lunch…
Drew sits next to May at their table. May scoots a little bit away from him. Again, she doesn't bother saying anything or looking at him.
Drew looks to Dawn who just shrugs her shoulders. He looks back at May who is eating her food.
"May, tell me what's been bothering you." Drew said. May doesn't respond and continues eating.
Another day in class…
Drew walks over to May and Dawn's desks. He crouches down to be on May's level and make her look at him, but she still never looks at him. She continues working on her assignment.
"May, please look at me." Drew whispered.
She completely ignores him and continues working.
That's how it's been pretty much every day. Drew tries to talk to May, but she ignores him. Dawn and Drew were getting more and more worried about May each day. One day, May told Dawn that she's giving up on using her powers. May has gotten so used to not showing any emotion and not talking to people that her powers never showed for the rest of the seventh grade. The students who witnessed her power that one day eventually forgot about it. Drew could never reach her and find out for himself.
