Chapter 7: Best Friends

May hasn't used her powers at all in a few months. She's kept them hidden. She still wears her bracelets to somewhat control them. Ever since that one day when the students called her a "freak", she hasn't shown any emotion to anything. She's even been ignoring Drew for the longest time ever. Drew still doesn't know that May has magic and she intends to keep it that way.

It's the beginning of 8th grade. May and Dawn are at school talking.

"Are you excited for middle school to be over?" Dawn said happily.

"Umm...maybe?" May said. "High School will be way harder than middle school though."

"Yeah I know. But it also means more friends and possibly really cute boys!" Dawn exclaimed.

May rolled her eyes. "Don't even mention really cute boys to me…" May said.

"Do you still like Drew?" Dawn asked.

"Dawn!" May yelled. A quick blush appeared on May's face and she shook it off. "Remember, don't say anything to the point where I will unconsciously use my powers."

"Right. I forgot." Dawn said.

"It's okay. Just remember." May said.

"Hello." A voice said from a few feet behind May. May tensed once she heard his voice.

("Drew.") May thought to herself.

"Oh. Hi Drew. Can I help you with something?" Dawn asked.

"Umm...actually I wanted to talk to May." Drew answered.

"Well you see...I don't think May's up for it." Dawn said.

"What do you mean by that?"

"I mean…" Dawn said.

"She means that I don't want to talk to you." May said without turning around.

May couldn't see it, but Drew had hurt in his eyes. He's been ignored for months and she still doesn't want to speak to him or look at him.

"Why?" Drew said quietly.

May didn't answer. Dawn just looked at her with a frown on her face.

"Okay then." Drew said. "I don't know what I could've done to make you hate me," Drew paused before continuing. "But I guess I'll finally accept the fact that you've changed. You've changed from the girl I thought I had feelings for." Drew said and then he started walking away.

May's eyes widened at Drew's words. May turned around to where Drew was walking away. "Drew!" May called. Drew didn't turn around. "Drew…" Her eyes started getting watery.

"May…" Dawn said. "He admitted it."

"I...can't believe it…" May said sadly, her blue rose jewel glowed.

Dawn put her hand on May's shoulder. "It's okay May…"

"But it's not." May said. "I've been such an idiot."

"May, don't say that." Dawn said.

"It's true though. The roses were not to tease me with or just to get me to stop talking. They really did mean love at first sight…" May's voice trailed off.

"I kept telling you." Dawn said.

"Yeah, and you were right. I'm in love with him and...he's in love with me. Or at least he was in love with me."

"You never know May. He could still love you." Dawn said.

"I...wish I could tell him why I'm scared to talk to him…" May said. "But I can't. If everyone else laughed at my powers, then he mostly likely will too."

All throughout 8th grade, things went like this:

Drew is walking down the hall and May and Dawn are walking the other direction. May and Drew glance at each other sadly and look away without saying anything.

Another day during lunch…

Drew is sitting with his friends at a separate table than May and Dawn. May's blue rose jewel has been glowing the entire day.

"May, remember, no emotion." Dawn reminded.

"I can't help it Dawn." May said as she looked over at where Drew is. "I thought that we had nothing special, but…"

In a quick second, Drew's table was surrounded by fangirls. Drew sighed.

("May would never go crazy over me…") Drew thought to himself.

May sighed. "How could he like me when all of the girls at this school like him?"

"I think it's because you don't go crazy over him that he likes you." Dawn said.

May looked at Dawn. "What do you mean?"

"If I was surrounded by fanboys every day like he is surrounded by fangirls right now, I think I'd rather want to know a person before thinking about dating them." Dawn said. "I'm pretty sure you're the only girl that Drew really knows, and that's why he'd rather talk to you and not random fans."

"I guess that makes sense…" May said.

Another day in the back of the school with no one else around except May, Dawn, and a guy named Russ…

Russ grabbed a hold on May's shirt and lifted her up against the wall.

May tried to struggle out of his grip. "May!" Dawn called.

"I think you should leave this school, freak!" Russ yelled at May. "I still remember from last year about those freakish powers of yours."

May just stared at Russ with fear in her eyes, her violet rose jewel glowing. Dawn panicked and ran away to get help.

"Seems like you and your friend are weak!" Russ said. "She just ran away."

"No she didn't. She wouldn't do that without a good reason." May said.

"Oh really?" Russ said darkly. He tightened his grip and lifted May higher up against the brick wall.

"Yes, I'm sure she went to get help."

"And if she didn't?" Russ said evilly.

"If she didn't…" May's voice trailed off.

Russ felt a rock hit him in the head. He dropped May, who fell to her knees. He turned around.

"Who threw that?!" Russ yelled.

Drew was standing there next to Dawn and he was smirking. "The name's Drew." He said as he flicked his hair.

Russ got more angry. "You've got some nerve getting in my way!"

"And you've got some nerve bullying an innocent girl." Drew retorted. "I suggest you go on home before I have to report you to the office."

"Fine." Russ said angrily. "I'll leave." Russ started walking away angrily and soon, he was out of sight.

Drew and Dawn walked over to May as she stood up.

Once May got up, she said, "Thanks you guys for-"

May got cut off because Drew grabbed her arm and pulled her into a hug. May's eyes widened when she made contact with Drew's chest. She felt Drew move his hand to hold her head next to his and his other hand wrapped around her waist. May soon found herself returning the hug.

"I'm glad you're alright." Drew whispered into her ear.

"Thank you Drew…" May said.

They separated and Drew held both shoulders with his hands. They stared into each other's eyes. "I'm sorry." Drew said.

"For what?" May asked.

"For last year." Drew answered. May cocked her head. "I kept trying to talk to you when you clearly wanted to be left alone." Drew said.

"Drew…" May said.

"I just wanted to know what happened that made you cry and people stare in secretive ways." Drew said. "So...I'm ready to accept the fact that you need some space." Drew let go of May's shoulders.

"I…" May said and then smiled. "Thank you."

"No problem. Thank Dawn for coming to get me." Drew said.

May looked at Dawn. "Thanks. I knew you wouldn't just leave."

"Of course I wouldn't. We're friends." Dawn said.

Drew pulled a rose out of nowhere and tucked it in May's hair. "I'll see you around." Drew said and then he started walking away, leaving a blushing May behind.

After that day when Drew saved May from another bully, they started to talk once again. They were starting to become actual friends. Drew started teasing her again with calling her by a different name, which May of course yelled at him for.

Drew never again asked about why May was crying that one day and why she ignored him after that. Their friendship was, of course, always being watched by Drew fans. Once Drew glared at them, they walked away.

Drew was actually becoming one of May's best friends surprisingly. Dawn, May, and Drew would always hang out with each other. May's bracelets managed to keep her powers under control whenever she was with Drew. And again, she just tried her best to never use her powers during school and she would have fun with them at home.

This was their relationship throughout the rest of 8th grade:

"Are you sure you'll be able to beat me in a race?" Drew asked.

"Absolutely positive." May said confidently.

"Why do you want to race anyway?"

"I don't know." May shrugged her shoulders. "Let's just burn some calories!"

Drew rolled his eyes. "Okay then. Starting line."

May and Drew got ready to run to a tree in the distance. Drew took a rose out of nowhere and placed it in May's hair. She blushed.

"Ready…" Dawn said. "Get set...GO!"

Drew took off in the direction of the big tree while May didn't move and was still blushing.

"Umm...May? You have to move!" Dawn yelled, causing May to shake her head and snap out of her trance. May took off and Dawn giggled and started running to the finish as well.

Drew stopped at the big tree before May and he turned to look back at the running brunette.

"Hurry up Slowpoke!" Drew called.

"Shut up!" May yelled back and she made it to the big tree. She ended up tackling Drew to the ground. They fell on the grass with May on top of Drew. "You cheated!" May said.

"All's fair in love and roses, am I right?" Drew said.

May glared down at him and that's when Dawn made it. She just stood next to the tree and watched May and Drew.

"I totally would've beat you if you didn't give me a rose." May said.

"So...you're saying that I distracted you?" Drew smirked.

May blushed and yelled, "Jerk!"

Drew chuckled and soon, it got silent. Too silent. It got quiet once they noticed the position they're in. May is over Drew and Drew is under her, and they're only inches away from each other's face. No one bothers to move or say anything. They're both staring into each other's eyes. Emerald meets Sapphire. And Dawn is just watching the whole thing. Dawn sees May's red and pink rose jewels glow.

"Umm…" May said to end the silence. "I-I'm sorry." She said quickly as she stood up, blushing.

"Yeah...me too." Drew said as he stood up as well, blushing.

"Hey May!" Caroline called from the distance. "Let's get going!"

"Okay Mom!" May called back. "Looks like I have to go home now." She said to Drew.

"Okay. I'll see you at school." Drew said.

"Bye guys!" May said as she waved and started running out of the park.

Drew sighed as he watched her run off.

"When are you going to tell her?" Dawn said.

"Tell her what?" Drew asked.

"That you still love her."

Drew blushed. "I...don't still love her. I mean...she's my best friend now and…"

"That has nothing to do with it."

"But...do you know if she feels the same way?" Drew asked.

Dawn smiled. "I think I'll let you find the answer to that."

Drew sighed. "Very well then…"
