Case 1: spirits all over (Part 1)

Naru's P.O.V:

I walked to the classroom as I heard counting, "1, 2, 3", "4" I said, and blood cuddling screams was all I heard for a good amount of time until I turned on the lights.

"Oh, please tell me that was you just now?" One girl sighed .

"Am I interrupting something?" I asked with amusement lacing my every word.

"I thought for sure it was the ghost." said the other girl, heaving a sigh of relief.

"Sorry," I said, even though I couldn't care less, "I didn't expect anyone to be here, but then I heard your voices and I couldn't help myself." I only half lied; I heard Mai's voice, and I couldn't help but try to scare the life out of her.

"Oh no, It's totally fine." Mai's friends exclaimed and launched towards me.

"What year are you?" one of the girls asked.

"I'm seventeen this year" I informed them. Though Mai probably thinking that normally people would just say they're a senior.

"Well, we were just telling ghost stories." One girl said.

"I see," I said, even though I already knew that. "Well maybe I can join you guy some time." I said despite not having any intention to join them ever.

"Wow, do you mean you like telling ghost stories too?" The girls asked with love-struck eyes.

"Yes." I lied.

"You seem like a really cool guy. What's your name?" I thought they'd never ask.

"My name is Kazuya." That might be the dumbest name ever, but Lin picked it.

"Ok Kazuya, I have one question, why are you here?" Mai can be so sharp with her tongue sometimes.

"There are some things I need to take care of." I replied as politely as I could. She knows full well that I'm here to pick her up.

"Well what are you waiting for?" She pressed. 'You' I wanted to reply.

"Do you need our help for anything?" The other girls squealed.

"No, but I would love to be invited to join you the next time you tell ghost stories?" Truth be told I don't really want to join them, but it will be convenient to gather information about the old school house.

"Of course, you're welcome anytime, how about tomorrow after school?" The girls insisted.

"Ok, but where?" I asked.

"Right here." They giggled; I guess I could humor them for now.

-The next day-

Mai's P.O.V:

"Lin? Where are you?" I said while I suddenly tripped and knocked over an old bookshelf over. For a second I thought I was gonna clasp on me, but Lin suddenly appeared out of nowhere and pushed me out of the way and the book shelf fell on him.

"What's with all the noise?" Naru asked in fluent Japanese as he walked in with a file in his hand and his cold face slowly turned into wide-eyed shock.

"Naru, I think I accidentally killed Lin…" I said with teary eyes and slowly looked up from the old book case.

"Hey Mai, don't you dare try to jinx me!" Lin shouted from under the bookshelf.

Naru's P.O.V:

"What's with all the noise?" I asked as I walked into the old school house with the old records on the place and I slowly lost my calm composure when I saw my looking down on a broken camera, one of mine, and a fallen bookshelf with an arm coming out from under it, and it didn't not take my genius self to realize it was Lin underneath the shelf.

"Naru, I think I accidentally killed Lin…" she trailed off as she looked up at me with tears filing her beautiful chocolate brown eyes.

"Hey Mai, don't you dare try to jinx me." Lin shouts and Mai ran out to call an ambulance.

"She was really worried about her mentor you know." I said as I slowly lifted the book shelf off of him and nudged his arm to make sure he was really ok.

"Worrying about me is one thing, cursing me is another." Lin exaggerated "She still has mastered her 'Voice of Izanami' yet." The 'Voice of Izanami' has the ability to curse a person with just a few words from the wielder's mouth, so it is understandable that he would want Mai to watch what she says.

-Some time passed-

"He has a fractured ankle, but he should be all fixed up in about 3 months, as long as he lays off on the heavy work." The doctor said as he finished examining Lin's leg.

"Oh, thank goodness, Lin, I'm so sorry, please forgive me." Mai said with her head bowed while holding my arm and half hid herself behind me.

"I'm not angry Mai, I understand that it was an accident, just be more careful and mindful of your surroundings." Lin replied in monotone, but had a caring look in his eyes; everyone knew that he was like another father to Mai and we all knew he was more than willing to fulfill that role.

"Lin, Madoka is waiting to in the waiting room and she's kind of going into hysterics, so please go get her," I said as led Mai to the door way "and we will take our leave now, we still have a whole investigation to finish."

"Hey Naru, it's actually kind of fun to be in a normal school." Mai started as we walked out the hospital, she still clung to my arm as she always did and we often got mistaken for a couple just like we always have, not that I'm bothered by that.

"I don't see the appeal in this whole charade, besides didn't you once said yourself that the auras of people around you are a disgusting sight to see?" I look down at her skeptically. "Or was that all a lie just so you can cling on to someone as unbearably handsome as me?" I smirked as her head shot up, her beautiful chocolate brown eyes wide, and her cheeks flushed as red as mother's roses.

"Oh, shut up," She said as she playfully hit me on my arm "by the way, I don't think there is anything wrong with the old school house." Her voiced turned serious "I thought with the accidental deaths associated such an old establishment that there might have been a spirit of someone who does not realize they have passed on, but walking through the place earlier, I can confidently say that there are no spirits" she explained.

"I believe you're correct, but I'm sure that the principle has hired a few more so called professionals to scope out the place." I understand the mistrust the principle holds towards me due to my young age, but I'm absolutely reluctant to meet Masako Hara any more then I must. "Anyways, try not to doddle around after school; I need to send you home, and since I'm a busy man I need you to be swift."

"Ok," she sighed resignation "but why bother coming to get me, we live in opposite directions don't we?" she asked with honestly curious look in her eye.

Stunned by her question, I racked my brain for an excuse. "If I don't get you, who can say if some dirty old pervert with horrible taste just comes up to you and kidnap you to make you his slave or something." I grinned as I saw her flushed red with both embarrassment and anger.

"Fine, jerk." she pouted "By the way, how did Aunty make the principal allow me to get out of class any time I have work?"

"How should I know, mother always have her way with things." I shrugged it off knowing all well that mother probably pulled a sob story on them.

-Back at the school-

Mai's P.O.V:

By the time I got back to school from the hospital I was already late for school, but I told the principle I was held up at work, and he let it slide. I was late for class, but I just told the teacher that the person responsible for relieving me from my shift was late; class proceeded as any normal day. After school, my friend wanted me to stay after to tell ghost stories with Naru.

"Did you say ghost storied?" asked a girl from the classroom's doorway, Noako Kuroda I believe was her name. "Is that what you three do after every day?" she pressed. "Then no wonder I've had this headache for so long; I'm very attuned with spirits." she claimed. "When they gather in groups I get headaches." she added.

Assuming that she is claiming that there are ghosts within the school grounds, she is gravely mistaken, female medium or not. "So you blaming us for that?" I said, going along with her charade.

"Of course I am!" she shrieked. "When you tell your little ghost stories, they attracted low level spirits, and they attract stronger spirits and then we're in big trouble," she declared "so when you entertain yourselves with your little ghost stories, you're putting me at risk." She spat.

"So tell me, if you are sensitive to spirits like you claim then do sense anything with the old school house?" I whipped around to tract the owner of that voice, and low and behold it is Naru standing by the doorway again like last night.

"Oh My Gosh, Kazuya came to find us" my friends shrieked while I sighed in resignation knowing that he's here to pick me up.

"Hold on, are you the one that put these girls up to telling these ridiculous ghost stories?" she interrogated Naru. "

"You didn't answer the question." Naru replied flat-out. "Could it be your psychic abilities are made up?" he pressed.

"For your information, there are numerous spirits of those who died in the war that gather at the old school house!" she replied desperately. "In fact, I'm positive that building was used as a hospital, I've just seen too many injured soldiers at that place"

"Hmmm… I was not aware of a hospital being there during the war. The school was founded before the war; perhaps it was a medical school." Naru said knowing full well that the school house was just a normal school.

Kuroda looked shock; she should have done her research before she had formed her story. "Look, I don't know, but I really do see spirits. If you're not psychic you wouldn't understand." She spat while avoiding eye contact with Naru the entire time. Funny thing is, I am a perfect medium like Gene and I still haven't the slightest cool to what she is talking about.

After hearing Kuroda's nonsense, my friends were no longer up to telling ghost stories any more, and they promptly left. Having nothing to do myself, I offered to help Naru set up the rest of the cameras and microphones in the old school house since Lin is very incapable of doing any heavy lifting, and Naru gladly accepted the offer say " I was going to make you help me anyways; after all, you were the one who fractured Lin's leg."

"Naru, have you talk with Gene lately?" I asked.

"No. Why?" He asked without looking up from the school house's history report.

"Well, don't you miss him? I get to see him because he is my guide, but what about you?" he was like a brother to me and I miss him immensely, I can't imagine how it must be for Naru to lose a twin.

"I will speak to him when I find him." He said "Then I'll grieve him." After hearing that, I no longer felt the heart to press him further.

Me: Sorry for taking so long to update, who knew high school would be so much work. I will be a senior this year, so hopefully I will have more time to update; either way I will still try my best to update as much as I can.
